Something very different for a change.
raymond-1530 October 1999
A somewhat irreverent interpretation of Heaven and the goings-on within the Holy Family. God who tends to get up late because of sleepless nights is disturbed that the world is in turmoil despite the fact he sent Jesus down to earth to fix things up. God gets a great idea of producing a second son and having another go but Gabriel can't find a virgin who is willing to make herself available. And there's also the problem of the Holy Trinity. Is it to become the Holy Quartet? It's a highly original satirical comedy with God and Jesus devoid of all majesty. Jesus addresses God as "Dad" and God refers to him as "the kid". I liked the scene where the first man from the Apocalypse arrives and is questioned by St. Peter. Played by Luis Ciges the first arrival is disappointed in the appearance of Heaven, not at all as he expected it. Even the trumpets are out of tune. Luis Ciges is a delight to watch as the little man in search of a vermouth and gin. The dialogue in the first half of the film is quite brilliant, but I think the scriptwriter began to run out of ideas towards the end. The closing scene falls rather flat, but then what can you expect? Most of the inhabitants of Heaven have decided to return to earth and accept things as they are.

Preposterous , ridiculous and anti-Catholic story with a star-studded Spanish cast
ma-cortes31 August 2021
This is a disconcerting and absurd flick providing prestigious Spanish actors , including a numerous cast with 20 protagonists, at least. This is a funny, amusing comedy with surreal situations and universal analogies that can be applied to many contemporary happenings . Surrealism distorts reality to breaking point, to the embarrassing and impossible understanding . A strange film deals with a village and the crazy situations encountered by its citizens who result to be Biblical characters such as : San Pedro (Francisco Rabal) , Dios Padre (Fernando Fernán Gómez), Jesucristo (Jesús Bonilla) , San Isidoro de Sevilla (Agustín González), San José (Manuel Alexandre), Virgen María (Mary Carmen Ramírez) , San José (Manuel Alexandre), Arcángel San Gabriel (Enrique San Francisco) , San Juan Evangelista (Gabino Diego), among others . It starts with Matacanes (Luis Ciges) who arrives in a village where occurs fantastic happenings and problems with neighbours . There God (Fernando Fernán Gómez) decides to send another Son to Earth to save the world, then an angry Jesus Christ (Jesús Bonilla) disagrees , because in such a case the history should be changed . Meanwhile , San Pedro (Francisco Rabal) who is a Guardia Civil has to face rare events . To solve the conflict , they all decide to organize the apocalypse resulting in fateful consequences . It takes a look at Biblic roles for equivalent figures in your own society. On the other hand, some of the characters in the movie are definitely peculiar and purposely abstracts.

Surrealist film with several known actors , ridiculous moments and embarrassing situations with countless insane turns .A thorny Spanish comedy from the late 1990s that simply can't be retold including a numerous cast playing a lot of non-sense character . On every step this movie is a fierce critique of Church , but equally a sharp in-depth critique of contemporary Spain in which everything changed in order for nothing to change. Screenwriter , Director Jose Luis Cuerda tells his special humor in which blends religion, life , death , sex and a lot of blasphemy . It puts us in position to laugh at ourselves while at the same time exposing stereotypes, questioning accepted norms and shows the suppressed truth behind the official stories. This rural comedy relies on repetitive incidents , silly scenes and absurd deeds . It packs continuous changes of viewpoints , jokes , crazy situations and a great main and support cast , standing out the following ones : Fernando Fernán Gómez , Jesús Bonilla , Chus Lampreave, Achero Mañas, Isabel Serrano, Antonio Gamero, Alicia Sánchez, Manuel Alexandre, Saturnino García, Roberto Cairo , Alex Angulo , Maria Elena Flores , Maria Galiana . However , the main question is as follows : aren't there other religions that are criticized, which is always Catholic? , in fact, maybe the Catholic religion the only one to be criticized and being constantly object of banter .This one belongs to Jose Luis Cuerda's surrealist trilogy formed by : ¨Amanece que no es poco¨ (1989) , ¨Asi en el cielo com en la tierra¨ (1995) and ¨Tiempo Despues¨ (2019)

It packs a brilliant and colorful cinematography by Javier Salmones . Shot on location in Pedraza, Segovia, Castilla y León, Buitrago de Lozoya, Madrid, Talamanca del Jarama, Madrid , Peñafiel, Valladolid, Castilla y León . And lively, enjoyable score by composer Francisco Ibáñez Irribarríay. This film was written by Jose Luis Cuerda who also produced and directed, as usual. Recently deceased Cuerda was an expert professional, being his film debut Pares y Nones, a typical Madrid comedy. He subsequently made El Bosque Animado with writings by Rafael Azcona and himself, being based on Wenceslao Fernandez Florez novel. He followed shooting drama : La viuda del Capitan Contreras and more and more comedies as Tocando Fondo and La Marrana. His biggest hits correspond as a producer, as he produced for Alejandro Amenabar : Tesis and Abre Los Ojos. His highest acclaimed film as a director was Lengua de las Mariposas that won various Goya Awards, prizes and nominations. Rating 5.5/10. Passable.
