Leduc's Animals
EdgarST13 April 2024
By 2014 standards digital animation in this short may seem archaic, but that is the least important aspect. This film is above everything else a labour of rescue and preservation of the musical heritage of México, a compilation of several children's songs, all related to animals, sung by Óscar Chávez, Cecilia Toussaint and Jaime López, ranging from the lyrical ("La calandria", the first song heard in the film) to the surreal and the "ethnographic" (a wedding of animals), with images as wacky as some of the lyrics, including a cat guitarist and astronaut, a cockroach with an ax, or wasps with black panther faces and fly bodies. Coproduced by the General Direction of People's Cultures, the short can be downloaded free at its official site.
