Jenny McCarthy Rejected 17 Times From Hosting MTV For Playboy Past
When Jenny McCarthy posed for Playboy, she never thought that it would hinder her opportunities so badly. This was such a big deal for her but then, a chance at MTV came up. Sadly, she was turned away because she had been a playmate and it broke her heart. According to People, she had really wanted to be the co-host on the network. They were casting for, what would be a very popular dating show, Singled Out. It ran on the music channel from 1995 through 1998 but getting there was far from easy. McCarthy...

R.I.P. Quibi, again.
It seems even the Roku Channel is not free from The Great Streaming Purge of the 2020s. According to a report in Variety, over 35 notable Roku Original shows are to be removed from the streaming service sometime in the near future. This comes after multiple other services have removed shows and movies, many of them high-profile releases, from their feeds in order to cut costs. HBO Max — now merely Max — infamously removed a lot of their original films back in August of 2022, while multiple TV shows and movies were taken off of Hulu and Disney+ in May of 2023 for similar reasons. One might assume that a free, ad-supported service like the Roku Channel would be free from the caprices of the streaming market, but that is not so. The line of Roku Originals will be brought to an end.
Roku Originals, some may recall, were not Roku originals.

Roku’s Brian Tannenbaum To Oversee Scripted Content As Colin Davis Moves To Sony Pictures Television
Exclusive: Roku has quickly found its new scripted boss.
The free-ad supported streaming service has promoted Brian Tannenbaum to oversee scripted content following news of Colin Davis’ departure to Sony Pictures Television. Deadline understands that he will initially take on the role on an interim basis, but sources suggest that he will likely get the job on a permanent basis.
Deadline revealed earlier this afternoon that Davis, who was Head of Scripted Originals, is joining the studio as EVP, Comedy Development.
Lydia Antonini remains Head of Creative Affairs and Morgan Pichinson remains Head of Comedy.
Tannenbaum has spent the last couple of years as Head of Alternative Originals and will now oversee all original programming for the service. It’s believed that he will become Head of Originals, after David Eilenberg was upped to Head of Content at Roku Media, following the departure of Rob Holmes earlier this year.

Exclusive: The Roku Channel has a job on its hands to manage its recently acquired library of Quibi shows and has hired the shortform service’s former exec Brian Tannenbaum to help on the non-scripted side.
Deadline understands that Tannenbaum, who was a senior content executive and programming lead in the shortform streaming service’s alternative and unscripted team, has joined the technology company to head up alternative content for The Roku Channel.
Sources have told Deadline that Tannenbaum’s priority is to handle the non-scripted portion of the Quibi content, dealing with producers and talent as it plans to roll out these shows on The Roku Channel later this year.
The majority of these non-scripted shows aired on Quibi during its brief window of operation, but there were a handful that didn’t – some that were completed before it shutdown and others that hadn’t finished production. Tannenbaum will...

Well before Quibi debuted, it seemed inevitable that the service was doomed. Sure, it didn’t help that a streaming platform dedicated to short-form videos had the incredible misfortune to drop during a global pandemic that confined millions to their homes with way more time than they knew what to do with. But it only took a few minutes skimming through the app to understand that Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s very concept of Quibi was flawed, pandemic or no. With no immediate ability to watch content on anything but a phone screen, no thought of letting viewers screenshot shows in order to share them, and no compelling answer to “isn’t this just expensive YouTube?”, Quibi didn’t have a grasp on what its audience might want until well after it launched.

Quibi – allegedly pronounced “kwibby” – is the latest service to enter the streaming game, and its strategy is unique. The streamer’s mobile-only content is designed to be consumed in small chunks, or “quick bites,” but unlike its competitors such as YouTube, the shows on Quibi have big name stars and production values similar to what you’d find on a major network. Creators Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman are betting that in our modern society of short attention spans there is an audience for well-crafted entertainment that can be watched quickly while on the go. Interested in giving it a try? We’ve got a list of Quibi shows that we’re most excited about.

Quibi’s April 6 launch is inching closer, and the mobile short-form streaming service made an aggressive sales pitch Wednesday morning at CES in Las Vegas.
The upcoming platform, created by longtime Hollywood and Silicon Valley power players Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, has raised plenty of eyebrows since its unveiling in 2018, and not just because the streaming service will only work on mobile devices. Episodes of each Quibi series will run under 10 minutes, and the platform, short for “quick bites,” has tapped a dizzying array of high-profile actors, content creators, and major companies to create or invest in the service. Katzenberg and Whitman told CES attendees during a keynote that the service will release roughly 175 series within its first year, which they say would equate to around three hours of new content every day. The service has already attracted $1.4 billion in investments, including from Disney and other studios

Hollywood’s landscape has changed dramatically since Viacom and CBS were last married in 2005. Now that the two media giants seek a Wall Street reunion, there are endless possibilities for the future of its shared content pie.
Huge action franchises like “Mission: Impossible” and “Transformers” from Paramount Pictures could explore new origin stories or exploit quirky side-characters for streaming series on the CBS over-the-top platform All Access. All Access is also currently building out the “Star Trek” TV universe, with three shows under the franchise’s umbrella set to be on the streaming service in 2020. Signs of synergy are already cropping up as well. CBS, which owns the TV licensing rights to “Star Trek,” gave its blessing for a cartoon take on the sci-fi classic at Nickelodeon this year.

Of all the TV shows to get a reboot or spinoff, Daria might be the one I'm most excited about. I was obsessed with the show growing up - I was just 12 when it premiered - and it reminds me of a time before Teen Mom and Teen Wolf, when you could watch shows like The Real World and Singled Out between a string of actual music videos. MTV has no shortage of iconic TV shows in its past, and now it's preparing many of them for a new generation. After the revival of The Real World comes the return of Punk'd and Singled Out, but like the Facebook factor involved with The Real World (the new season is on Facebook Watch), there's a catch with the return of these two reality shows. Singled Out and Punk'd will return as reimaginations on Quibi, a mobile-first streaming platform. Each revived show will have 20 new episodes under 10 minutes long. "This deal builds on MTV's strategy of reinventing our iconic shows to reach new audiences on pioneering new platforms like Quibi," Chris McCarthy, president of MTV, said in a statement....

More from the “everything old is new again” file: A pair of bygone MTV favorites — dating game show Singled Out and the Ashton Kutcher-led prank series Punk’d — are being revived for Quibi, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s new digital venture.
In a nod to “offering an optimal viewing experience for those on the go,” per the press notes, each show will get 20 new episodes of 10 minutes or less.
Here are loglines for the returning Punk’d, from STXtelevision in association with MTV Studios, and Singled Out, from MTV Studios:
The show that coined the verb “punk’d” dared to go where no show had gone before. Now that technology can really augment reality, we’re back to pull the boldest pranks on the biggest stars in Hollywood. This time around, no one is safe.
While downloading a dating app has never been easier, sorting through the singles is harder than ever.

MTV Studios and Quibi are teaming up to produce remakes of “Punk’d” and “Singled Out,” Variety has learned.
Both remakes, which will be available on the Jeffrey Katzenberg-created video streaming platform, will consist of 20 new episodes, each under ten minutes in length to remain in keeping with Quibi’s short-form content format.
“Punk’d” was a hidden camera reality show which aired for a total of ten seasons and was created by Ashton Kutcher, who also served as the host. The show targeted Hollywood stars, and the reboot will make use of augmented reality to make the pranks even bolder than before. The new “Punk’d” will be produced by STXtelevision in association with MTV Studios.

MTV is ushering two more classic series into the 21st century. “Reinvented” versions of celebrity prank show Punk’d and dating game show Singled Out are in the works at MTV Studios, TVLine has learned.
But there are a few twists: First, each episode — of which 20 have been ordered for both series — will be under 10 minutes in length. And rather than airing on MTV, these reboots will be available to stream on Quibi, a “mobile-first media technology platform.”
Hosted by Ashton Kutcher, the original Punk’d aired from 2003 to 2007, infamously terrorizing household names like Justin Timberlake and Frankie Muniz. (Come on,...
