Interesting

This Slovenian psychological thriller is interesting to follow due to a complicated story that never ceases to surprise you. A young woman, living alone and struggling to shake off unwanted men, becomes obsessed with a man who robbed the post office in which she works. A police officer called Ivan has a crush on her, but she is not interested yet plays friendly. One day she meets the robber again and a passionate affair ensues, which leads to an inevitable showdown between the two forbidden lovers and Ivan.

This film also examines Slovenia's communist past and draws parallels between it and their democratic, pro-capitalist present to show how much has changed and how much stayed the same. This is a prime thriller with good performances and should have gotten more attention than it did.

Warning: Spoilers
Opening the frame, tinged In blue light: the 9-year-old girl Ana Resnik finds scattered envelops in a wood, a postman's satchel, a hanged man: these scars the reason for a time as youth in a house of detention. Ljubljana 20 years later: Ana, a free-spirited attractive woman, lives with her beloved, frail aunt in Ljubljana and works at the central post office. Working for a day at the small station Dobrava: a robber strikes. Ana, finding money after the strike in a hidden box, takes it. The police inspector, responsible for the case, senses gaps in her story, believing that she is part of the robbery. He orders Ivan, a member of the council, to shadow her. By chance Ana sees the robber again, obtaining his name and address. Obsessed she goes to his place. The landlady opens for her his door. Here Ana discovers on a wall photos he has taken of her. She leaves the message: "Meet me in the skyscrapers café at four." The married family father Ivan tries to seduce Ana. She denies. The film shows how well yesterday's Slovenia's fits with todays pro-capitalist. Eventually Ana is told why the man in the wood, her father, hanged himself. A respected party leader. Told in her late aunts letter. Closing the movie: Ana, the stranger, now her lover and the for Ana obsessed Ivan. When Ivan is the symbol for yesterday and the robber tomorrows symbol, is Ana placed in the centered middle, todays symbol. As the future is killed by Ivan and Ivan, the symbol of yesterday is shot by Ana - it is Ana with the burden of her personal past and the possibility for the future. Return to the closing frame of the wood, tinged in blue: the girl Ana puts on the lost shoe to the hanged mans foot, tying the shoelaces, praying a Lord's Prayer for her (as we now know) father and, leaving him, runs with her fathers satchel through the wood, the camera following her. Fade out.
