With Jason Bourne arriving this week, we’re looking back on the career of director Paul Greengrass. As the person who single-handedly popularized the technique of “shaky cam” for the new millennium, Greengrass has seen his signature style emulated in action films as wide-ranging as Quantum of Solace and Taken 2. While so many of these pictures exploit the visual chaos of handheld camerawork to mask lazy fight choreography, Greengrass has always wielded the aesthetic with visionary purpose, whether that purpose be visceral, political, or both.
Indeed, shaky cam may be Greengrass’ most recognizable trademark, but it is the filmmaker’s purposefulness in confronting social and political issues that most fully unites his work past and present. Prior to making feature films, Greengrass worked for ten years at World in Action, a British investigative current events program known for its forceful and unorthodox journalistic style. Leaving a trail of controversy in its wake,...

From Guardians Of The Galaxy to Godzilla, and Noah to Paddington, our pick of 2014's finest film soundtracks and scores.
After Gravity blew your eardrums out of the airlock in 2013 with its seamless mix of sound effects and music, it was hard to imagine a film wowing just as much the year after, but 2014 was a year in which movie soundtracks became, if anything, even more intricate, from films about the nature of being a musician to those that replicated the noise of human existence for alien senses.
Before 2014 becomes a distant ringing in the ears, here are the top 14 movie soundtracks of the year.
1. Under the Skin (Mica Levi)
Once you've heard Mica Levi's soundtrack to Under the Skin, everything else sounds both disappointing and even more exciting. I say 'soundtrack' because, like the best movies, Jonathan Glazer's sci-fi understands that sound and music are two halves of the same hastily-conceived metaphor.

Stan Collymore has branded the BBC hypocritical after allegedly having an offer to appear on Match of the Day 2 withdrawn.
The football pundit caused controversy earlier this year when he posted a tweet criticising Britain's involvement in the Falklands, prompting a protest by a veterans group.
The tweet read: "Falklands? Wasn't anyone's. We just thieved it, as we do. What glory, what triumph. A f**king island with sheep. Rule Britannia."
He noted recently that other figures have remained at the BBC despite being "controversial", adding: "If Jeremy Clarkson can work for them, so can I.
"If my tweet about the Falklands, which did not mention the 1982 conflict, nor Argentina, nor was aimed at British servicemen or women, merely an opinion of British colonial policy in centuries gone by... was offensive enough for the BBC to withdraw their offer, why does Jeremy Clarkson get several attempts at offending many Britons?...

After Disney went and bought Lucasfilm -- home of the Star Wars franchise -- from George Lucas, Empire created this interesting infographic that breaks down which film franchises are owned by which studios. There's still seems to be a little confusion over what properties Marvel actually owns, but for those of you who haven't been paying attention, this should clear things up for you.
With the news that Disney has bought Lucasfilm, it's time to take a glance at the current state of play as regards franchises in Hollywood. Who distributes which film series? It's interesting to see which studios control which characters, if only so that the business-minded among you can mentally keep score at the box office each year. In terms of defining this lot, we've listed franchises that have had recent entries or which have left the door open to future instalments, so we've included Pirates Of The Caribbean,...

London, Sep 27: British Prime Minister David Cameron, in New York for a Un General Assembly meeting, failed to answer a few questions in a general knowledge quiz by Us chat show host David Letterman.
Cameron appeared on Letterman's "Late Show". The house band played "Rule Britannia" as he walked on stage, the Daily Mail reported.
Letterman, famed for his wit, tested Cameron with questions.

David Cameron was left stumped by basic questions about British history and culture during his appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Cameron became the first serving British prime minister to appear on the late night CBS talkshow on Wednesday (September 26), and was played in with a rendition of 'Rule Britannia' from Letterman's house band. However, he incorrectly attributed the musical arrangement of James Thomson's poem to Edward Elgar, when it was in fact set to music by Thomas Arne in 1740. "You have found me out. That's bad, I've ended my career on your show tonight," Cameron joked when told the correct answer. Letterman also asked him questions about the document known as Magna Carta, which Cameron correctly said was signed in 1215 at Runnymede. Describing the document as the country's first declaration (more)...

Writers, critics and campaigners give their view of Danny Boyle's spectacular curtain-raiser to the sporting spectacular
Ai Weiwei: It was about real people
Brilliant. It was very, very well done. This was about Great Britain; it didn't pretend it was trying to have global appeal. Because Great Britain has self-confidence, it doesn't need a monumental Olympics. But for China that was the only imaginable kind of international event. Beijing's Olympics were very grand – they were trying to throw a party for the world, but the hosts didn't enjoy it. The government didn't care about people's feelings because it was trying to create an image.
In London, they really turned the ceremony into a party – they are proud of themselves and respect where they come from, from the industrial revolution to now. I never saw an event before that had such a density of information about events and stories...

Rule Britannia! After seven years of planning, major over-spending, traffic jams, a travelling torch and the A12 getting a makeover, finally this weekend we welcome the Olympics to London. I love the Games and this weekend I'll be watching Danny Boyle's much-anticipated opening ceremony with British pride coursing through my veins. According to the lucky few that have witnessed the dress rehearsal, the £46 million budget for the four-hour telly spectacular has been well spent. With over 30 broadcast cameras capturing the historic event alone, I pity the poor director who has to wrangle that lot. And as for Boyle himself, I'm sure he's one chap no-one wants to be standing near on the night should the nerves get the better of him. So with the Olympics comes another historic milestone this week - EastEnders had a happy storyline! It was good to see soapland (more)...

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and with filming now complete on James Bond’s 23rd official outing in Skyfall due for release later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.
Following Roger Moore’s departure from the lead role after starring in the previous seven films, the fifteenth James Bond film, The Living Daylights, was seized upon as an opportunity to reboot the series with not only a new Bond but a new approach to the franchise that had become rather formulaic over the past 25 years. Taking the title from one of Fleming’s short stories, writers Richard Maibaum and Michael G. Wilson took the character back to his roots making a conscious...

Louis Walsh jokingly referred to Gary Barlow as 'Sir Gary' during X Factor auditions in Manchester yesterday (Tuesday, June 5). The Take That singer had curated the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert, which took place the previous day in London. He also collaborated with musicians including Andrew Lloyd Webber, Gareth Malone, the Military Wives Choir and the Commonwealth Band on a specially-commissioned work titled 'Sing'. The crowd at the auditions are said to have responded positively to Walsh's quip, with some cheering and others shouting "Get Gary knighted!" 'Rule Britannia' was also played during the afternoon session, with members of the audience saluting Barlow. Of Monday's concert, Barlow said: "It was an amazing day - hopefully (more)...

London — Margaret Thatcher chose Beethoven, Michael Caine picked Frank Sinatra and boxer George Foreman selected The Beatles' "All You Need is Love."
They are among almost 3,000 guests who have appeared on the radio program "Desert Island Discs," a British broadcasting institution that turned 70 on Sunday.
The show's simple format hasn't changed since 1942: Ask an illustrious or famous figure to choose the eight pieces of music they would take with them to a deserted isle, and talk about what the tracks mean to them. At the end of each program, the guest is sent into imaginary exile, along with their choice of a book, a luxury and one of their eight records.
Almost 3 million listeners tune in each week to the show, which has stranded royalty, prime ministers and movie stars, as well as scientists, poets and philosophers.

Kate Middleton’s cousin, who is a burlesque dancer, has come into the spotlight after it was revealed that one of her routines involves her stripping to the patriotic tones of Rule Britannia. Katrina Darling, 20, does her signature act, aptly titled God Save The Queen, which ends with her attired in nothing more than red nipple tassels and a barely-there thong. It is the Royal Family’s closest brush with “soft porn” since Prince Andrew’s love interest Koo Stark appeared naked in an erotic film. Darling had no idea she was related to Middleton when she created her regal striptease last year. But it has ...

Arrivederci Millwall, a largely forgotten British t.v. drama from 1990, has been repackaged and released alongside lads mag classic The Football Factory by Vertigo Films. It is cut from the same cloth, mostly, as Alan Clark’s The Firm but focuses its attention on a group of football fans leading up to – and during – the World Cup of 1982. There are political and sociological themes and sub-plots at play for added weight.
Is there a dewy-eyed nostalgia present in re-releasing these sorts of films? Awaydays and The Firm are recent films looking back with blood-tinted glasses. Sure, there’s more than a whiff of the 1980s these days, and not just in terms of music and fashion. Are we present in a “commodius vicus of recirculation”, to quote James Joyce.

It’s the biggest night of the British film calendar; a night where we Brits get to show the Yanks how an Award show is done and honour film and filmmakers from around the world, exhibiting absolutely no sense of bias towards our own crop.
Tell it to the birds, Bafta!
Before 2002 The Baftas took place months after the Oscars; by which time all of the A-List Americans had long since hung up their award season garb and get-up, gained ten pounds and would rather openly admit to being a vain, vacuous, human being who was compelled only by the all-mighty dollar rather than attend another night of smiling, clapping and honouring piers; let alone one that would call for them to cross the pond – God forbid!
The result was an audience heavily dominated by the best of British, a scattering of members from the foreign film elite and your down-on-their-luck former American screen icon,...

Much in the style of the English Armada, it was an evening of “Rule Britannia” as The King’S Speech won 7 BAFTAs at the 2011 Orange British Academy Film Awards on Sunday. The film took home awards for Best Film, Leading Actor, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Original Music, and Outstanding British Film. At the box office, The King’S Speech came in No. 6 for the weekend, grossing an estimated $7.4 million from 2,263 screens for a domestic cume of $93.9 million in its 12th week in release according to THR. The full list of winners is below.

British culture is going through a blue period, with actors, musicians and artists all happily admitting that they're privately educated Conservative toffs. What happened?
You may have missed it, but early last month, a very telling photograph appeared in the newspapers. Snapped on New Year's Day by a couple out for a walk on Coombe Hill in the Chilterns, it featured a party of eight – including David and Samantha Cameron, education secretary Michael Gove, film director Tim Burton, and the latter's extremely posh other half Helena Bonham Carter. According to subsequent gossip, the latter couple had been introduced to the Camerons by Bonham Carter's one-time Westminster school contemporary Nick Clegg. Others suggest that the two couples have been friends for years.
The group had reportedly stayed at Chequers, the prime minister's country retreat, on New Year's Eve – where the conversation doubtless turned to Bonham Carter's role in The King's Speech,...

Welcome to the No Fact Zone’s new column on musical performances on the Colbert report. Stephen is quite the entertainer, and also has fantastic musical guests from a variety of genres and backgrounds on the Report. Check back at the end of each week for a round-up of music in the show!
Apologies for being late with the current installment of meTunes! I was delightfully distracted by Louis Ck on Friday night and John Oliver on Saturday night. So without further ado, here we go!
Tuesday:
Tuesday had a lot of great music and musical references! The tune actually has a full set of lyrics and instrumental introduction, but most of the world is familiar with just the chorus...

I thought all was lost to childrens films and horror but no, thank goodness light hearted comedy is launched again in London. I hate The Archers, it is like Match Of The Day for me, but there is a huge following and this is as filthy and dirty an episode as you are going to find with a violent and justifiable ending to a big, puffed up bully. Posy Simmonds' wonderful cartoon...
