Quotes

  • [At Bruce's parents' grave]

Bruce Wayne : It doesn't mean I don't care anymore. I don't want to let you down, honest, but... but it just doesn't hurt so bad anymore. You can understand that, can't you? Look, I can give money to the city - they can hire more cops. Let someone else take the risk, but it's different now!

    [thunder and lightning]

Bruce Wayne : Please! I need it to be different now. I know I made a promise, but I didn't see this coming. I didn't count on being happy.

    [thunder and lightning]

Bruce Wayne : Please! Tell me that it's okay.

Andrea Beaumont : [enters]  Maybe they already have. Maybe they sent me.

    [They embrace in the rain]

  • Batman : You think you know everything about me, don't you?

Alfred Pennyworth : I diapered your bottom; I bloody well ought to, *sir*!

    Batman : Well you're wrong!

  • Batman : Your father's dead, isn't he? You came into town early to get Chuckie Sol, so you could shift the blame to your father if necessary.

Andrea Beaumont : They took everything, Bruce. My father, my friends, my life, you. I'm not saying it's right, or even sane but it's all I have left! So either help me, or get out of the way!

Batman : You know I can't do that.

Andrea Beaumont : Look what they did to us! What we could have had! They had to pay!

Batman : But Andy... what will vengeance solve?

Andrea Beaumont : If anyone knows the answer to that, Bruce, it's you.

    [silent pause]

Batman : Leave, Andy, now. Please.

  • Arthur Reeves : [on TV]  What kind of city are we running when we depend on the support of a potential madman?

    [click]

Alfred : What rot, sir! Why you're the very model of sanity. Oh by the way, I pressed your tights and put away your exploding gas balls.

Bruce Wayne : Thank you, Alfred.

  • Batman : Do you still follow your dad's orders?

Andrea Beaumont : The way I see it, the only one in this room controlled by his parents is you.

  • [while Reeves is trying to resist the effects of Joker's toxin, Batman appears in his hospital room]

Arthur Reeves : [gasps, then giggles helplessly]  Oh, no!

Batman : Why did the Joker meet with you?

    [Reaves keeps giggling]

Batman : It has to do with the gangster murders, doesn't it? He thinks you're involved. WHY?

    Arthur Reeves : [giggling]  I don't know!

Batman : [grabs him]  That's not the answer I want!

    [Reaves manages to calm down]

Arthur Reeves : Beaumont needed me to help him and his kid get out of town...

    [starts to giggle again]

Arthur Reeves : He kept in touch.

Batman : When was the last time you spoke to him?

Arthur Reeves : Years ago, my first election campaign. I was running out of money and I asked him for help...

    [giggles]

Arthur Reeves : He said no!

Batman : So you sold him to the mob.

Arthur Reeves : [now laughing hysterically]  I was broke! Desperate! They said all they wanted was their money back!

[he collapses with laughter, as Batman leaves in disgust]

  • The Joker : All right, I give in. I surrendered already. Tell her, Batman.

Batman : [Panting]  Andrea, you've got to... get out of here! The whole place is set to... explode!

Andrea Beaumont : No. One way or another it ends tonight. Goodbye, my love.

  • Andrea Beaumont : What's that you're practicing?

    Bruce Wayne : Jujitsu.

Andrea Beaumont : Gesundheit... That was a joke.

Bruce Wayne : Jujitsu's no joke!

  • [at Andrea's mother's grave]

Andrea Beaumont : So, tell me - with all that money and power, how come you always look like you want to jump off a cliff?

Bruce Wayne : Why do you care?

Andrea Beaumont : I don't. Mom was asking.

  • The Phantasm : Stay away! This is not your fight!

Batman : This madness ends now!

  • Joker : You're crazy! I'm your only chance to get out of here! Let me go or we'll both die!

    Batman : Whatever it takes!

  • Andrea Beaumont : Hi. Hey, what happened to you? Trip over some loose cash? It's been three days since we met and still no calls. I figured you must be dead or something.

Bruce Wayne : You expect every guy you meet to call you up?

Andrea Beaumont : The ones who are smart enough to dial a phone.

  • Arthur Reeves : [a woman has just thrown her drink in Bruce Wayne's face. Arthur holds out a handkerchief]  Friend in need?

Bruce Wayne : [takes the handkerchief and begins to dry off]  Councilman. So, how goes the Bat-bashing?

Arthur Reeves : Better than your love life. Really, Bruce, it's almost as if you pick them because you know there's no chance for a serious relationship. At least since that one girl. What was her name? Ann? Andi? Andrea? Yes, Andrea Beaumont. Now, there was a sweet number. How'd you let her get loose?

Bruce Wayne : Thanks for the handkerchief, Arthur.

[stuffs the handkerchief in Arthur's pocket]

Bruce Wayne : You know where you can stick it.

  • Bruce Wayne : It's another cave, all right. Could be as big as the house, judging from the number of bats that came out of it. Alfred, what's wrong?

Alfred : This just arrived, sir.

Bruce Wayne : [opening it, he finds Andrea's engagement ring with a note]  "Left with dad... too young... need time. Forget about me."

  • Alfred : It's so good to see you and Ms. Beaumont together again. Might one ask what this bodes for your alter ego?

Bruce Wayne : I'm not sure, Alfred. Everything's happening so fast. So much has changed.

Alfred : You still love each other.

Bruce Wayne : It's true. I love her. Maybe after this is settled...

[looking at the portrait of his parents]

    Bruce Wayne : Maybe then.

Alfred : I'm sure they would have wanted you to be happy, sir.

  • Andrea Beaumont : You know how much I've always wanted to see Europe, Bruce. And dad has business there next week. It's some sort of hush-hush deal. He won't tell me a thing. He can't even say when we'd be coming back.

Bruce Wayne : Will you at least let me try to talk you out of it?

    Andrea Beaumont : Bruce...

Bruce Wayne : Wait, please. Oh... never mind.

[taking a small gift from his pocket]

Bruce Wayne : I'm no good at this. Here, you'll get the idea.

[as he gets down on one knee, she opens it and gasps upon seeing a diamond ring]

Bruce Wayne : What do you say?

  • [Bruce's crime-fighting training is derailed by his infatuation with Andrea]

Bruce Wayne : What the heck am I doing, Alfred? This isn't part of the Plan! I must be going nuts!

Alfred Pennyworth : If I may make so bold, Master Bruce, I'd say quite the reverse.

  • [Bruce proposes to Andrea]

Andrea Beaumont : I never thought this would happen. I always felt like... like I'd thrown you a curveball, like you never knew what to do with me, because I wasn't in "The Plan".

Bruce Wayne : You are now. I'm changing the Plan.

  • [after meeting Sal Valestra]

Bruce Wayne : Is my shirt too big, or is that my flesh crawling?

  • Bruce Wayne : Don't wait up.

  • Andrea Beaumont : So, we meet again. I like the cape. Not sure about the mask, though.

Batman : Have you ever seen this?

    Andrea Beaumont : No.

Batman : But that's your father. He's the one who set up their corporate partnership.

Andrea Beaumont : So? That's his job.

Batman : He was the one element that tied these gangsters together. Where's your father now?

Andrea Beaumont : Haven't a clue. Why don't you try Madagascar?

Batman : That's not what you told Reeves! You told him you were closer than ever to your father.

Andrea Beaumont : You had me bugged, is that it?

Batman : I can read lips.

Andrea Beaumont : Then read them now: get out.

  • Bruce Wayne : [spotting something in the picture of Andrea's father and his mob associates]  Hmm.

    Alfred : Is something wrong?

    Bruce Wayne : Maybe.

[taking a red pencil, he draws on a figure in the background]

    Bruce Wayne : Oh, no!

[as he realizes who it is, with a drawn-on smile, the Joker's cackling is heard]

  • Bruce Wayne : [seeing biker hooligans harassing a street peddler]  Stay here. I gotta stop this.

Andrea Beaumont : Bruce, no. Don't.

Bruce Wayne : Well, what do you expect me to do, just stand here?

Andrea Beaumont : Just come back to me in one piece. Please?

  • Bruce Wayne : I hope we're not interrupting anything.

Carl Beaumont : Not at all. I'm never too busy for my Andi and her friends. I tell you, Bruce, I do a lot of financial planning. When it comes to money, you can't take the future for granted. But all the money in the world means little if you don't have loved ones to share it with. Nothing's more important than family.

  • Alfred : Might one inquire what this is?

Bruce Wayne : A piece of windshield from Chuckie Sol's car. There's a chemical residue on it; some kind of dense long-chain macromolecular polymer. Adapt-o-genic, of course.

    Alfred : [sarcastic]  Of course.

  • Carl Beaumont : At last I meet the elusive Bruce Wayne.

Bruce Wayne : Nice to meet you, sir.

Carl Beaumont : Sir? Oh, don't be so formal, Bruce. Andrea's told me so much about you, I feel like we're practically family.

  • Batman : Oh, I should have known.

    Alfred : Sir?

Batman : Chuckie Sol and Buzz Bronski; they have some history together. They were partners in dummy corporations set up over ten years ago. The third director was one Salvatore Valestra. Hmm. Sal's having company tonight. Don't wait up.

Alfred : Meaning, I trust, that once you're done with him, you'll be seeing her?

  • Andrea Beaumont : From that night, we were on the run. We hid all over Europe, eventually settled on the Mediterranean coast. Dad was able to parlay the money he embezzled into a fortune. Finally, he had enough to pay them back, or so he thought. It would never be enough. The wanted interest compounded in blood. He had to find another way.

Bruce Wayne : The man in the costume... your father?

Andrea Beaumont : He said he'd get them, somehow. When I heard about Chuckie Sol, well, I had to come back to find him. To stop him. I'm sorry, Bruce. That's twice now I've come into your life and screwed it up.

  • Bruce Wayne : It's got to be one or the other. I can't have it both ways. I can't put myself on the line as long as there's someone waiting for me to come home.

Alfred : Ms. Beaumont would be glad to know you feel that way, Master Bruce. She's holding on line one, sir.
