“Thank you for this work that’s just so magic and so worth it,” expressed Mary-Louise Parker when she accepted the Tony Award from presenter Gwyneth Paltrow in 2001 for her unforgettable performance in “Proof.” This year, Parker competes for the same prize for starring in the first Broadway production of Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “How I Learned to Drive” and could take home the third trophy of her career for it. Below, see a list of all five of Mary-Louise Parker’s Tony nominations and two wins.

Fresh off of her second Tony Award victory last year for “The Sound Inside,” Mary-Louise Parker has earned a follow-up nomination in the same category for her work in the revival of Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “How I Learned to Drive.” Parker returned to the haunting piece 25 years after she originated the role Off-Broadway, reuniting with costars David Morse – who also reaped a bid – and Johanna Day, plus director Mark Brokaw.
This nomination not only celebrates her exemplary performance, but also moves Parker into an extremely exclusive list of performers who have earned at least five nominations in the Best Play Actress category. Her first bid dates back to 1990, when she contended for “Prelude to a Kiss.” Over a decade later, Parker earned her second nomination for “Proof” and went on to win the prize. In the following two decades, she earned another nom for “Reckless” in 2005 and last year for “The Sound Inside,...

Covid has caused a lot of uncertainty around Broadway. Several shows have had to suspend performances, go on hiatus, or close permanently. And the American Theatre Wing hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet. Though with that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are six productions of musicals set to open this spring. Could we see any of them contend at the next Tonys? Below is a look at the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of their authors, casts, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

Two decades ago Mary-Louise Parker won her first Tony Award for her enthralling performance in David Auburn’s “Proof.” Five Broadway appearances later, Parker is on the cusp of winning the second Tony of her career for her searing turn in Adam Rapp’s “The Sound Inside,” according to our exclusive Tony Awards predictions. “The Sound Inside” has six nominations, including Best Play.
Parker earned the best reviews of her stage career for “The Sound Inside,” topping even the rapturous notices she received for “Proof.” Back then, John Simon (New York Magazine) called Parker’s work in “Proof” “a performance of genius.” In his rave review of “The Sound Inside,” Jesse Green (New York Times) wrote, “Parker, never better in her 30-year stage career, has dug even deeper into Bella, treating each line as if it were an archaeological site; she builds her performance on artifacts, not theories.” Vinson Cunningham...

Hollywood has a long history of metamorphizing movies that featured white casts into movies with predominantly black casts. Most famously, The Wizard of Oz (1939) was remade as The Wiz (1978), but other color-coordinated remakes include Annie (2014), About Last Night (2014), Steel Magnolias (2012) and Death at a Funeral (2010). Within the past few months, we've had two such films: What Men Want (based on Mel Gibson's 2000 comedy What Women Want) and Little (less a remake and more a recycling of Big, Freaky Friday, Prelude to a Kiss and 18 Again). But is there anything especially "black" about these remakes that reinterpret the original ...

Say what you will about the seemingly unending run of new Broadway musicals based on non-musical films, enough of them have been good enough that you write them off at your own risk. Kinky Boots and Waitress are just two recent examples of stage musicals that, if anything, improve on their source material. The just-opened Amélie, an adaptation of the 2001 Jean-Pierre Jeunet film, attempts to recreate the success of those two adaptations: An established, inventive director in Pam MacKinnon, music and lyrics by singer-songwriter Daniel Messé (of music group Hem) with some help from musical vet Nathan Tysen, and a book by the respected playwright Craig Lucas (Prelude to a Kiss). And of course, a Broadway star on the rise in the lead role: the angel-voiced Philippa Soo, who stole hearts in Hamilton and the Off-Broadway incarnation of Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.

Chicago – The young Alec Baldwin (think “Prelude to a Kiss”) never seemed as prevalent as the today’s Alec Baldwin. Taking his “30 Rock” persona to a different level, he voices the title character of ‘The Boss Baby,” the latest from Dreamworks Animation and director Tom McGrath.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film works well on a couple levels – as a warm story on family dynamics when a new baby comes into a sibling’s territory, and as a hilarious satire on American business, especially during the 1960s Mad-Men era. Baldwin’s interpretation of Michael McCullers’ screenplay adaptation (of a children’s book by Marla Frazee) is the highlight of a conventional we-gotta-save-the-world type story. Riffing on crass businessmen is a Baldwin specialty, and he takes the Boss Baby and lifts it to a height where the mere presence of the character elicits laughs. Director Tom McGrath (“Madagascar” series, “Megamind”) uses a familiar animation...

With a title like Heisenberg, and a plot that begins with a smooch between an old man and a much younger woman, Simon Stephens’s terrific new play might seem to be a cross between Nick Payne’s Constellations and Craig Lucas’s Prelude to a Kiss. Like the former, it takes a mainstay concept in contemporary physics and applies it to relationships; like the latter, it imagines the ripple effects of a surprise encounter whose nature is never fully explained. Also like the latter, it stars Mary-Louise Parker, who (after a few costume-drama misfires) is once again beyond terrific in a role that suits her talents perfectly. Georgie, a New Jersey transplant in London, is (or appears to be) an obnoxious oversharer with boundary problems, a cousin to Cecily Strong’s “The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party” character on Saturday Night Live.

Body swap movies come out all the time. Freaky Friday laid out the modern formula in 1976, and after a few dormant years, the story returned in the mid-1980s and has popped up in theaters every few years since. There was, in fact, a weird glut of five body-switching movies within eight months over fall 1987 and summer 1988: Like Father Like Son, the Italian film Da grande, Vice Versa, 18 Again!, and the biggest hit of the bunch by far, Big. Beyond that, there were two remakes of Freaky Friday (1995 and 2003), early-1990s comedies and dramas like Switch and Prelude to a Kiss, family comedies like Wish Upon a Star (1996) and A Saintly Switch (1999), and the gross-out comedy The Change-Up in 2010. There are many more, too, American and foreign alike, but they all tend to have two things in common: they all deal with two (or more) people magically exchanging personalities, and...

Okay, I admit it. I used to watch Dawson’s Creek – only the first two seasons though, and I only watched it for its dialogue. Really! Other than introducing me to the acting talent of Michelle Williams, Dawson’s Creek also provided me with a glimpse of Rob Thomas‘s writing style. Though Thomas was only credited as a writer on two episodes during season one - Prelude to a Kiss and In the Company of Men – his knack for whip-smart dialogue really left an impression on me. Nonetheless, I was always too embarrassed to admit to ever watching Dawson’s Creek. Six years later, I got hooked on Veronica Mars – which Thomas created, executive produced, wrote 64 episodes of, and directed two episodes for. I used to get mocked and ridiculed by friends for watching a television series about a teenage detective, but I didn’t care. The writing was so incredibly intelligent, the...

She rose to fame just before Julia Roberts who rose to fame just before Sandra Bullock. Together the three of them inarguably ruled the Romantic Comedy genre for a full decade back when, and this is an important note, the genre was producing regular classics. (Look at any modern RomCom Queen's filmography and try to find films half as good; the qualitative dropoff is more like a horror movie!)
Cut to 2011 and the other two members of America's Sweetheart Trinity: 1990s Division are still headliners and now Oscar Winners. So what happened to Meg Ryan and why did goodwill not follow her or rescue her as it did her royal sisters in big screen love and laughter? For a good long while people wondered when her Erin Brockovich would arrive. Eventually they stopped wondering but why couldn't she even stumble onto her own The Blind Side?
It isn't a simple matter of talent.

Grey’s Anatomy – A Monk returns
A familiar face is coming back to Seattle Grace this fall, will you remember her? That’s right, Grey’s Anatomy will welcome back actress Debra Monk, who portrayed George’s mother, Louise, once upon a time. George was, of course, the character of T.R. Knight. George is no longer on the show due to an untimely death. Fans will recall the bus accident that prevented George from leaving for the military.
Will Louise’s come back be bittersweet? TV Line assumes she’ll enter the hospital as a patient. Can’t you foresee a very emotional reunion for Louise, Meredith and Bailey? Oh my. Don’t forget that Callie was once Louise’s daughter-in-law and a whole lot has changed since those days! This reunion episode of sorts is scheduled to air November 3rd.

The body-swap. It’s an old favorite, been around since time immemorial. Like Father Like Son, Prelude To A Kiss, The Hot Chick, 18 Again (not to be confused with 17 Again, which is a teen-again thing. Totes diff.) And let’s not forget Freaky Friday, Freaky Friday, and, of course, Freaky Friday. Can you merge the fratty humor of The Hangover with a body-swap story and make it fun to watch? With The Change-Up, that’s a yep, you bet.

If you've seen one body-switching movie, you've seen them all, right? Well, that's not necessarily the case, for there are a couple of unique exceptions to the rule (as discussed below). However, most of these movies are quite alike and generally have to do with the aftermath of some mystical process gone terribly wrong. These films are often comedic in tone but would also hope to communicate some philosophical message about identity, yet they mostly succeed in wallowing in their own poorly scripted, slapstick-laden juices. While the so-called "Golden Age" of the body-switching movie reached a fever pitch in the mid-to-late 1980s, studios still can't resist popping them out on occasion to earn a quick buck. This weekend's The Change-Up is merely the latest edition, so let's just have a quick review of the body-switching movie, shall we?

As movie storylines go, body-switching is one of the oldest, dating back to the silent era. While The Change-Up is the latest look at two people temporarily switching bodies, star Jason Bateman has pointed out where the movie breaks ground: It's the first "R-rated version of that story" — and one that comes from The Hangover screenwriters Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, and Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin.
What all body-switching movies have in common, besides the "the grass is always greener" parable, is that some kind of mystical force is responsible for the switching. Before we see a magical public fountain switch the urinating Bateman and Ryan Reynolds this weekend, we survey the Freaky Friday genre.

I came across a few images of Meg Ryan at the start of the weekend and nearly fell out of my chair. The actress has been away from the big screen for a little while (good idea), apparently getting ready to direct her first feature film. The last time I saw her was when she made a guest appearance on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and that was shocking enough. (By the way Larry, just when I thought you had gotten yourself into All the trouble, you did what you did last night...) But back to our girl Meg, Jesopus H. Godtopus, what has she done to her face? People are always talking about Nicole Kidman's botox; she's got nothing on Ryan. And of all the women out there doing stuff to their faces, I think I'm most disappointed in Meg. She was so damned adorable and she could have aged pretty gracefully,...

Musician and outspoken conservative Ted Nugent is always passionate, sometimes clever, and occasionally batsh–. I’ll leave it to you to decide where his performance fell last night on Anderson Cooper 360. The man seems to think the idea of Alec Baldwin running for office is a little funny. (That’s his right.) And/or he thinks the idea that Eliot Spitzer has his own show on CNN is ridiculous. (I’m confident he’s not alone.) But I’m still struggling with his response to a video clip of Spitzer asking Baldwin about his political ambitions. “I don’t know...
