Alien artist Hr Giger was involved in a number of film projects in the 1980s and 90s. We talk to filmmaker William Malone about some amazing films that never happened.
Given just how genre-defining 1979’s Alien was, it’s perhaps surprising that Hr Giger, the Swiss artist who designed the title monster, wasn’t involved in more films. His creations appeared in the likes of Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Species (1995), plus a little-seen German indie comedy horror called Killer Condoms (1996), but none were as high-profile or influential as Alien.
In the wake of that genre-defining space horror, other artists and designers tinkered with Giger’s unforgettable xenomorph in its sequels. Giger wasn’t involved in the making of Aliens, Alien Resurrection or subsequent prequels or spin-offs, and his work for Alien 3 was barely used. Instead, Giger had the curious habit of coming up with concepts and artwork for...

The Netflix computer turned down the idea of making A Knight’s Tale 2, according to director Brian Helgeland.
Well, we haven’t quite reached the future dystopian hellscape promised by 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day yet. However, when we do – and the human race is fighting for its life against sentient AIs hellbent on our destruction – this day may seem like a key step in that direction.
According to Brian Helgeland, the director of 2001’s A Knight’s Tale, Netflix passed on making a sequel to his movie because its algorithm told executives that the film wouldn’t be a success.
Oh dear. Assuming this story is true, it marks another depressing step in the surrendering of our creative powers on the altar of technology.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is one of the best Arnold Schwarzenegger movies of all time. The science-fiction tale has over the years become a cult classic, drawing a new generation of audience every year. Starring as T-800, it was also this role that helped Schwarzenegger climb the mountain of fame and acclaim and become a Hollywood star.

Featuring Linda Hamilton, the ending would have effectively ended the franchise, yet fans reckon it would have been perfect.

Linda Hamilton has been one of the trailblazers who changed the industry’s stereotypical portrayal of women in film. Actresses like Sigourney Weaver and Hamilton showed that women can be total badasses and can hold themselves against danger. Hamilton’s role as Sarah Connor in The Terminator series has been the most popular role of her career.

However, that tough and incredible role became a detriment to her career as she got typecast in similar roles and was not getting diverse projects. The actress recently revealed that she was tired of being tough on camera, and landing a meaningful part in Stranger Things prevented her from taking a retirement from acting.

"Enter our Miniwood world!!" Click play and have fun with this Hollywood tribute. A design studio based in Athens, Greece called Yeti Pictures has debuted a 74-second long animated short film called Miniwood. This was created by the studio in their spare time as a way to promote their work and honor their favorite movies from growing up. "It's always hard to find spare time between commercial work to make these short films happen but team projects are what keeps Yeti moving forward and keeps our passion for animation alive." Directed by Yeti's Tony Zagoraios, famous scenes from these movies are recreated in their "miniworld style," with miniature characters that are direct references to action figures or toys. It features homages to classics including Jurassic Park, The Exorcist, King Kong, The Addams Family, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and RoboCop. I'd watch vignettes like this for 100 more movies!

Arnold Schwarzenegger has accomplished a fair bit in his life. The man came over from Austria having served in the army, claimed the Mr. Olympia title a full seven times, then launched one of the most successful Hollywood careers in the history of the industry, before becoming governor of California and finding time to marry a Kennedy in the process. But surely what he's really concerned with are his Rotten Tomato scores.

Earlier today, we shared a quote from The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day writer/director James Cameron where he expressed regret about some of the things he brought to the screen in those movies. Now, we have some positive news to share regarding the Terminator franchise: SuperHeroHype reports that the Terminator comic book license has been acquired by Dynamite Entertainment.
There have been a lot of Terminator comic books published over the decades. Marvel Comics brought us some Terminator 2 comic books back in 1991, with Malibu Comics bringing us some more T2 comics a few years later. Beckett Comics published some Terminator 3 books, Now Comics published some The Terminator books. Dark Horse Comics published a ton of Terminator-related books over the course of several years, including mini-series where the Terminator universe crossed over with the likes of RoboCop, Superman, Aliens, and Predators. Arnold Schwarzenegger is certainly one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, whose claim to fame was through his iconic role in the Terminator franchise. Action became his signature genre, defining several years of his illustrious career. With that said, he also declared war on a very toxic trend prevalent in the fitness industry that is killing it.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has existed at the very core of Hollywood for decades now. From winning Mr. Olympia multiple times to becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger has done it all. While the Austrian Oak has made his presence felt in some of the biggest blockbusters, the Terminator series cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s leading superstars.

For years, rights issues have held up updated video releases of James Cameron’s Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies, with the latter two features skipping Blu-ray entirely. At last, all three have come to 4K Uhd, and their joint release allows one to better appreciate the unexpected connections that link these otherwise completely distinct features.
On a basic level, all three films, covering less than a decade from 1986 to 1994, chart one of the most meteoric career rises in Hollywood history—one that you can see in their exponentially increasing budgets and scale. Aliens, made in the wake of Cameron’s breakout success of 1984’s The Terminator, was produced for a paltry $18 million, not much more than the $11 million allocated to Ridley Scott’s Alien nearly a decade earlier. But Cameron, who cut his teeth in Roger Corman’s micro-budget talent incubator, knew how to stretch a dollar to its maximum use.

"The Terminator" is a perfect movie. /Film's own Jacob Hall has argued director James Cameron has never surpassed it. Cameron knows how to get his money's worth from Titanic-sized budgets and the filmmaking world is a better place when he gets to reach the peak of his ambitions. Still, "The Terminator" — a lean sci-fi slasher that's both exciting and foreboding — shows that Cameron could still spin gold with more modest tools.
Even if "The Terminator" isn't much of an actor's picture, it's well-cast, particularly Michael Biehn as haggard time traveler Kyle Reese and, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular cyborg assassin. This film was a key step in Schwarzenegger's climb to being the biggest movie star in the world. Even so, it's something of a Hollywood legend how these two weren't the initial picks for these roles.
In particular, it's spread through the grapevine that O.J. Simpson was considered to star as the Terminator.

"Grand Theft Auto V" is one of the biggest video games of all time, which in turn paved the way for a huge player base in "Grand Theft Auto Online." For a couple of out-of-work actors, it provided them a space to do the thing they missed the most during the pandemic: acting. While "GTA" is a place to commit crimes in a carefree, digital environment, a couple of guys named Sam and Mark turned it into the most unlikely venue to play host to some of William Shakespeare's work.
"Grand Theft Hamlet" is a new documentary that chronicles Sam and Mark's journey from merely playing "GTA" to hatching a plan to put on a production of "Hamlet" staged entirely in the game. The film recently premiered at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and I am here to tell you that it's unlike any other movie you've ever seen before.

“I wanted to experiment: can I develop a family which was not unlike my own upbringing?” says Nicolas Cage, while talking to Den of Geek about his new movie Arcadian, which premiered at SXSW 2024. “My dad did most of the heavy lifting, he did the raising because my mom sadly couldn’t be around. So it was just my father, and in this case, myself and my older brother. I saw that family dynamic in the [Elia] Kazan picture, East of Eden.”
From that description, you might imagine Arcadian to be an austere drama, something that takes place in a rustic farm house and focuses on the complex relationship between a father struggling to do right by his two boys. And you’d mostly be right… mostly.
But then Cage completes his thought. “And then I thought, well, wouldn’t it be interesting if this little family nucleus was contending with...

One of the most iconic science fiction action franchises is "Predator," which began with the eponymous movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. While "Predator" is regarded as an action classic, attempts to follow-up on its success have since had considerably more mixed results. The series has seen a number of sequels, revivals, and crossovers with the "Alien" franchise, with varying levels of critical and commercial reception. However, for every "Predator" movie that has seen the light of day, there are plenty of projects that were canceled or altered significantly.
From failed attempts to bring Schwarzenegger back in the fold to star in additional installments or sequel plans shelved by disappointing box office, there are lots of discarded "Predator" movies. This includes the studio shuffling pitches and filmmakers in their hopes to keep the franchise relevant and recapture the 1987 movie's magic. The Oscars 2024 got really exciting when Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Keaton locked eyes in a stare-down. You could feel the nostalgia hitting the crowd hard. These two used to be Batman buddies, so seeing them together again got everyone hyped up. And guess what? Danny DeVito was there, too, adding to the buzz.

“I’m an English teacher, not fucking Tomb Raider.”
What does it mean to be a strong woman? Is it visible muscles à la Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2: Judgment Day? Is it impressive feats of strength like climbing a mountain or braving white water? Is it putting yourself in harm’s way to save a friend? As it turns out, the answer is all–and none–of the above. There is no one way to be a “strong woman.” Sometimes it’s as simple as just showing up for the hard moments. Writer/director Neil Marshall explores the concept of female strength in his 2005 The Descent, a harrowing story of friendship and betrayal, strength and survival. In their latest episode, the Lady Killers kick off a series on Hidden Horrors by descending into the complicated themes of this terrifying film and facing off against the monsters lurking within the human heart.

Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from the wrongheaded to the correct opinion.
The list of sequels to masterpieces that can be considered masterpieces themselves isn’t a very long one; “The Godfather Part II” is an obvious candidate, and arguments can be made for James Cameron‘s “Aliens” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and “The Color of Money” all have their partisans, and Ingmar Bergman scored a late-career triumph with his “Scenes From a Marriage” sequel “Saraband.” One movie that almost never gets mentioned in this company is “The Two Jakes,” the 1990 sequel to “Chinatown” directed by its star,...

In a stunning cinematic universe where sand dunes rise like mountains and the fate of galaxies hangs in the balance, Denis Villeneuve’s first voyage into the Frank Herbert’s “Dune” saga clinched six of its 10 Oscar nominations. Yet, in a twist as dramatic as Dr. Wellington killing Duke Leto, Villeneuve found himself overlooked in the best director category — a snub that left fans (and pundits) in disbelief. I dare the Academy’s Directors Branch to make such an omission once again.
As “Dune: Part Two” unfolds, we dive back into the treacherous universe alongside Paul Atreides, played by the ever-charismatic Timothée Chalamet. Seeking vengeance for his father’s death (Oscar Isaac), Paul’s journey intertwines with new allies and enemies, portrayed by a constellation of stars including Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem and Christopher Walken.

Ah, the 1990s. Perhaps the peak of the moviegoing experience. Theaters consistently showed classics such as the special effects marvel "Jurassic Park," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Pulp Fiction," "Fargo," and "Titanic." The decade also featured an abundance of outstanding horror films like "The Sixth Sense," "Scream," "Misery," and "Interview with the Vampire," all boasting big-name stars and top-tier directors.
However, playing at the opposite end of the cineplex were thrillers you may have never heard about or skipped simply due to bad reviews or scathing word of mouth. Some of Hollywood's top talent attached themselves to such projects, thwarted by ornery critics or moviegoers seeking higher-end entertainment. That's a shame.
While there are undoubtedly plenty of terrible horror films from the 90s, the decade was also ripe with lower-tier entries that have aged surprisingly well. Many don't reset the bar established by esteemed pictures like "The Silence of the Lambs,...

1972's "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" is a movie I'm betting many of you haven't seen. I'd like to make the case that you should amend that. How, dear reader, is it that this is relevant right now in 2024? With the release of "Dune: Part Two" upon us, there has been much discussion recently about great sci-fi sequels. Many of the early reactions to Denis Villeneuve's film have effusively praised "Dune: Part Two" as one of the greatest sequels in the genre of all time, right up there with "The Empire Strikes Back." While I have yet to see Mr. Villeneuve's film (as of this writing), it got me thinking about the genre that I love so much and the sequels I think hit it out of the park. That brings us to the movie at hand.

The Terminator franchise has spent the last thirty years chasing the high of the first two movies, and Linda Hamilton thinks it’s time to finally let it die.
Linda Hamilton starred in The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day as Sarah Connor and later returned for Terminator: Dark Fate, but she is not interested in reprising the role for any further potential reboots. “I’m done. I’m done. I have nothing more to say,” Hamilton told Business Insider. “The story’s been told, and it’s been done to death.“
Hamilton added: “Why anybody would relaunch it is a mystery to me. But I know our Hollywood world is built on relaunches right now.“

Arnold Schwarzenegger shared a similar sentiment last year but believes that the franchise can continue, just not with his involvement.

A movie that warned us about robots taking over, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, is also one of the first to be recreated entirely with artificial intelligence. If that’s not apropos, I don’t know what is. Our T2 Remake is an upcoming feature crafted by 50 of the industry’s top artists, premiering in Los Angeles on March 6.
Per the project’s official press release:
“Our T2 Remake marks a new era in cinema where entire movies can now be generated with the help of machines. The film puts a spin on the beloved 1991 classic with commentary and satire about modern-day A.l. technology and its effect on humanity.”
“This film was inspired by Our Robocop Remake, is dedicated to the Al community, and celebrates this innovative space. Our T2 Remake re-envisions a classic narrative often cited negatively in A.I. discourse, challenging the ‘Doomsday’ perspective.”

Hamilton was a long-time fan of the sci-fi horror drama and revealed that she watched all the series episodes until season 4. Actress Linda Hamilton, who is a die-hard fan of Netflix’s Stranger Things, has revealed why she will not be watching the show’s fifth and final season. It has been confirmed that Hamilton will be appearing in the series, but her role in the series is still unknown.
Linda Hamilton in Terminator: Dark Fate
The actress explained that she will get “imposter syndrome” as she doesn’t watch anything that she has appeared in. So, Hamilton has officially ruined Stranger Things for herself. In February 2022, Stranger Things was renewed for a fifth season, which is expected to release in 2025. The show has been a fan favorite ever since its first season debut on Netflix in 2016. It has been praised primarily for its characters, atmosphere, acting, soundtrack, and writing.

Carrie Fisher took the virginity of Indiana Jones. At least, that's how she told it while she was alive. Specifically, that's what she told me. In her own words: "I wrote it with George [Lucas.] We wrote Indiana Jones losing his virginity to Mata Hari. It went very well."
I had been asking about her work on the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy, so this answer came a bit out of left field. However, it's a little-known fact that Fisher worked as a writer on many George Lucas projects, doing an uncredited polish on the scripts for the prequels and even coming up with adventures for Indiana Jones to go on in his TV series, "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles."
So, how did Indiana Jones actually lose his virginity, and what part did Fisher play?

Robert Zemeckis' blockbuster "Back to the Future Part II" was released in November 1989, and it expanded on the lore from the first. In the 1984 original, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) went back in time to the 1950s when his parents were teenagers ... and not terribly interested in each other. To ensure he gets born, Marty has to arrange circumstances so that his mom and dad start dating. In "Part II," Marty is enlisted by Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) to travel to the far-flung future of 2015 to make sure that his kids stay out of legal trouble; this will be easy to do, as Marty's son (also Fox) happens to look just like him.
And, no, hoverboards aren't real. That was a rumor Zemeckis started himself.
The "Back to the Future" movies play fast and loose with causality but offer audiences a chance to feel like they're smart. In short, they're a hoot,...

Before we lost James Cameron to the virtual world of Pandora (where he is still doing fine work), he mounted some of the most physically daunting productions in the history of cinema. He submerged his cast and crew in 30-plus feet of water in order to authentically capture the (literally and figuratively) high-pressure environment of "The Abyss," executed a load of wild vehicular stunts in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (one of which was so perilous his cameraman refused to shoot it), and compelled 20th Century Fox to build a new studio in Mexico for his reconstruction of the title vessel in "Titanic." Though he was pioneering computer generated visual effects throughout this period, he loved practical spectacle -- and, judging from the box office on most of these movies (save for "The Abyss"), audiences shared his ardor.

Tom Arnold was a showbiz joke in the early 1990s.
The unknown actor suddenly became a gossip mag regular in 1990 as Roseanne Barr's publicity-hungry husband. When she brought Arnold in as a writer on her hugely popular sitcom, there was a sense of coattail-riding. When she cast him on the show, and, two years later, convinced ABC to give him his own sitcom, this sense curdled for some into fact. And when several prominent TV critics shredded the series, Barr created a PR crisis by firing off nasty faxes to the naysayers (including a homophobia-tinged screed to USA Today's Matt Roush that brought her bigotry to the fore decades prior to her Trump-era meltdown). It was all terribly ugly. Barr had more than enough Nielsen ratings juice to weather this storm, but Arnold's fame seemed to be nearing its fifteenth minute.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger delivered the now legendary line, "I'll be back," in 1984's "The Terminator," no one could have known how true that statement would prove to be. Arnie was indeed back, and back, and back, and back, and back again, proving that the only thing as relentless as the T-800 is Hollywood's desire to pump out sequel after sequel.
Thankfully, we at least got one classic of the action genre out of it: 1991's "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." After delivering a masterpiece of low-budget sci-fi filmmaking in '84, director James Cameron proved why he's the king of sequels with the 1991 follow-up. "T2" outdid its predecessor in almost every way, blending impeccable action set pieces with an overwhelming sense of doom that made the film linger in the mind long after viewing.

“Come with me if you want to live!” But don’t bother if you don’t care for James Cameron’s movies. Michael Biehn — who played Kyle Reese in 1984’s The Terminator — revealed that singer Sting turned down playing the character because he didn’t like the director’s previous work…Piranha II: The Spawning.
Biehn — who was also featured in deleted scenes in Terminator 2: Judgment Day — remembered Sting’s fateful words to Cameron during the casting process, telling Michael Rosenbaum on his podcast, “I think originally [James Cameron] wanted Sting because he thought Sting had this unearthly quality about him. And I think he met with Sting, and I think Sting basically said, ‘Yeah, I just saw Piranha 2. I think I’ll take a pass on this thing.’ Something along those lines. I’m not sure how serious Jim was about him. I’ve never heard any other name associated with Kyle Reese.

Hollywood has never really accepted that you can’t recapture lightning in a bottle. No matter how context-specific a blockbuster’s success was, you can always count on an executive to insist on making a follow-up even if that doesn’t make sense for the story. That being said, sequels aren’t always doomed to failure, and one of the most famous examples of this is James Cameron’s Terminator 2, a film that refused to do the same thing twice and became just as iconic as the original.
Naturally, Hollywood learned all of the wrong lessons from the success of T2, as most of its sequels would be repetitive cash-grabs simply reiterating on the same tired ideas of fate, time travel and robot assassins. The only real exception to this curse would be 2009’s controversial Terminator Salvation, a post-apocalyptic thriller that genuinely expands on the world of its source...

A new restoration of the 1954 British black-and-white science fiction film Devil Girl From Mars, directed by David MacDonald and starring Patricia Laffan, Hugh McDermott, Hazel Court, Peter Reynolds and Adrienne Corri.

With Martian males extinct after a battle of the sexes, Nyah aims to capture breeding stock on Earth. The 4K remasters of James Cameron’s The Abyss, True Lies and Aliens are coming in for criticism – and AI is getting some of the blame.
James Cameron has long been one of my favourite directors, and I’m not alone. I can still remember where I saw many of his films for the first time, especially the early titles, as I was growing up.
The Terminator premiered on BBC2 in a series called Moviedrome where the film was introduced by director Alex Cox. The Abyss I saw on a Sunday evening as it premiered on Channel 4, an infamous broadcast where the uncut version was mistakenly screened.

It's hard to say that one of the most successful filmmakers of all time has underrated movies under his belt, especially when said underrated movies star some of the most famous actors of all time, but I think it's safe to say that James Cameron's underrated movies are having a moment right now. Both "The Abyss" and "True Lies" have been absent for a whole cycle of home video distribution, never graduating to a simple Blu-ray release. In fact, they have even been hard to find on digital release.
It's not like these movies are obscure. Both were successful on release. Maybe not "Terminator" or "Titanic" successful, but big hits nonetheless. They just didn't carry the same cache as his biggest hits.
Maybe that'll change now that they're getting the 4K treatment, although the word on both of those transfers is mixed from the home video professionals who have checked out the disc.

Cameron delivers that verdict via Zoom from New Zealand, where he’s making the next “Avatar” film. Gerwig is half a world away in New York, but despite the geographic distance, the two have an easy rapport. Perhaps it’s because they share the novel experience of having directed billion-dollar-grossing, culturally defining blockbusters. Their discussion is being taped, which has Gerwig...
