Dancer Texas meets American Graffiti meets Summer of ‘42
Havan_IronOak22 December 2002
In this movie of growing up and graduating from a Texas hill-country high school, we see a Jewish boy and a Catholic girl (who happen to become neighbors) meet, fall in love, and eventually go their separate ways.

I'm a sucker for coming of age movies, particularly those in which the writer is looking back at the time in his life when he first discovers true love. That moment when having sex and having a real relationship become separate things.

This movie tells that story well. Both leads are convincing and are likeable and understandable. The supporting cast and the subplots also add to the overall effect and set this story firmly in its time and place and ground the characters in the correct mindset. There are sure to be better movies just as there are sure to be more universal and epic themes, but this film does its job well and tells a good story in a commendable way.

For those that are romantics at heart, this movie is a must see.

An immensely gratifying film experience
Jared X28 October 1999
Although this film was made before Dogme emerged as the predominant method of filmmaking, and before digital triumphed over -- strike that. You get the point. This 1991 masterpiece clearly anticipated those developments. Corin Nemec is just outstanding as the ne'er do well author and narrator. The pace is slow, but elegantly so, because the cinematography is so beautiful. Record it the next time its on T.V., because I guarantee you'll never see a better nostalgia rip-off made-for- T.V. movie. Direct-to-video never felt so good!

The most memorable TV movie of my teenage years
5penny18 April 2003
I was 15 years old when this movie premiered on the television. Being raised in Texas, I understood the boredom & monotony of teenage life there. This movie touched my impressionable teenage heart & I remembered it fondly through the past 12 years. I recently got to see it for the 2nd, 3rd & 4th times thanks the the LOVE channel. I still cry because the movie reaches in & touches my inner confused teenager.

stay away from this loser movie

Warning: Spoilers
may contain spoilers!!!! so i watched this movie last night on LMN (Lifetime Movie Network) which is NOT known for showing quality movies. THIS MOVIE IS AWFUL! i am still amazed that i watched the entire thing, as it was terrible. could this movie contain any more stereotypes? (harping jewish mother who wants son to be a doctor, catholic family with priest sons, big big crucifixes in every room shown in the catholic family's house, mexican whores, "bad" guy who is really a softie at heart, incredibly bad country accents) GAG!!!! i was at first intrigued by the fact that i had never heard of this movie and after seeing that cheryl pollack and corin nemec were in it, i decided to stay awake until 4am to watch it. anyway, the only redeeming thing about this movie is madchen amick's beauty. i suppose pollack's and nemec's acting is okay, but they have a horrid script to work with. unlike the other reviewer who commented on the lack of texan accents (the movie is supposed to take place in austin and very few people there have a twang) i think that the accents were there (in supporting characters like mary margaret's date and john) and were unnecessary. they were also very very bad. i am so very tired of hollywood "southern" accents that sound nothing like the area where the accent is supposed to be from. and since it was supposed to take place in austin and shooting movies there in 1991 would not have been expensive, i fully expected there to be familiar shots of the town: the beautiful capitol building, the UT tower lit up for a winning football game, etc. none of these things were there. also, it takes about 5-6 hours to drive to mexico from austin. at one point in the movie, michael and his posse take off for mexico to lose their virginities and are able to drive off when it is dark (during the summer and early fall it doesn't get dark in austin until 9pm or so), spend time in mexico getting drunk and having sex with mexican (is there any other kind?) whores, and then return to austin by dawn. while this is theoretically possible it is NOT very likely. and if anyone has started school in the hill country (usually the third week of august, but may have been in september in 1960) they know that unless they want to pass out from heat stroke they DO NOT wear their letter jackets!!!!! in august and september in austin and the surrounding areas it is 90+ degrees. only people with no body temperature would be stupid enough to wear sweaters or letter jackets on the first day of school. all in all, a very bad made for tv movie experience.

One of my favorites.
dancingqueen12 February 2003
This movie is one of my very favorites. It's hard to explain why. Maybe it's the innocence of Corin Nemec and his awkwardness paired with the boldness of Cheryl Pollak, but it definitely has something to do with the soundtrack. Also, some of the characters have little lines or movements or moments that are amusing in and of themselves. Finally, the story is one that always tugs at my heartstrings, and the last scene is so bittersweet. All in all, I love this movie; it's perfect for a gooey, sentimental girls' night.

made-for-tv-movie perfection personified!
Mizz_Goldie9 March 2003
Honestly this movie was more moving than anything i've watched in a while. I think the way that Corin Nemec and Cheryl Pollak Play The parts so well I mean when i watched it i wanted it to last forever i wanted to watch it over and over again which i couldnt and it makes me mad. the only movies that have ever made me feel like this are the virgin suicides and tuck everlasting omg good good movies, but this movie this movie takes the cake it just blew me away, the only part that really confused me was the end i mean (dont read on if you have yet to see this movie) i think that honestly they should have gotten married or something but i think it was very touching that she named her daughter michelle. michelle being the woman form of the name micheal. and how he re-instates the fact that she only wanted to be his best friend if not more when they first started out she said "you're gonna be my best friend" and at the end he signed the book "to mary margaret my best friend love michael" BRILLIANT BRILLIANT WORK! i give it two thumbs up and trust me if i had more thumbs i'd give it more!!!!

Viva Thomas Jefferson HS San Antonio.
apierull-129 May 2023
Mr. Zimberg was two years behind me in high school, and his references to the city of San Antonio and some of the person mentioned we're not camouflaged at all. His friend Goldstein is a prominent and well-known civil rights and big dollar lawyer, who is a friend of Marry Maveric Jr, friend of mine. The restaurant where the music takes place and the young men meet up for their "Diner " like conversations is pretty much modeled after Buddies that was on Fredericksburg Road a few blocks from my home. One change is that the municipal Auditorium, mentioned where graduations taking place has been updated to some thing called the Tobin Center.

I love the movie and the only problem was some of it was a little dark to make it out on TV but it was still a great movie.

The last time I saw Mike was in Houston going to an Astro game to see Sandy Koufax pitch, and he drove up with a some of his friends to our car with some of my friends and yelled out at us or are you going and in typical Mike fashio he got the point across.

Thank you Mike I only found out about this movie by watching the Mary Tyler Moore biography on HBO and hearing your name mentioned, and recalling all those days at Jefferson and hearing your name and then I found you on YouTube lucky me right. Once again, many thanks for bringing back so many memories and doing such a fine job.

By the way, my name is Anthony Pierulla most of the friends that accepted me at the preppy Jefferson when I transferred from Central Catholic in the 11th grade we're Jewish. Many are not with us any longer but made a positive impression in mind. Names like Lieberman, Pearlman, Eichlebaum, Sundole, Wernick, Cain, Fractor and others that enlightened me about Hebrew school, humor, creativity and the absolute value of humor and irony. So much that I would have, being a recovering Catholic, pursued that mythology. Instead I was told I was an iconoclast and "worse" so I converted to Unitarianism, agnosticism, atheism, in that order until I fell into the beauty and depth of Hellenistic literature because of its questioning the nuances of humanity.

The most memorable movie your friends never heard of
thumperstrauss29 December 2020
I should preface this by explaining my rating of 19/10. If I'm being honest, it's probably a 7/10 and not as good as my all-time favorite movies. But I saw this movie on TV I think around 1993, when I was around the same age as the characters. So my rating is tied into how it make me feel at the time, and how it brings be back to that time. When a movie functions as a time machine, that's worth a few extra points. I recorded the movie onto VHS and it travelled with me over several moves. I finally transferred it to my computer, although that was probably not necessary since someone else put it on YouTube. I don't think I've watched it in its entirety since then, apart from a few scenes here and there as I was doing the transfer. A few scenes are with me still, including the opening scenes when JFK is elected, the dad's understated acting when he opens the bedroom door, and of course the book-signing scene. I would like to find a better copy of the movie to watch, as my VHS version (and the one on YouTube) are showing their age, or maybe that's what makes the movie so charming.

Surprise Fan
Jpcs2000S11 July 2003
Caught this movie on French afternoon tv. Quite nice to watch like many telefilms. Normally i like films set in a modern time but this 60s yarn with youthful love elements was cool to watch with many twists and kept you rooting for the characters, especially the lead characters. Moved enough to login and write this little review. Best wishes to database users.

Well deserved
malacara198518 June 2002
I believe that praise is deserved for this movie which I feel was well written and beautifully acted in. This has become one of my favorites. And although i read somewhere that there should have been accents in the movie because it took place in Texas, I disagree. Not everyone in Texas has an accent. I really think this was a great movie and it seemed very believable of the era it was portraying.

Is Corin hot or what?
June84521 June 2001
I first saw this movie several years ago, when I was still quite young, yet I was deeply interested in the plot line as well as the characters. The age-less tale of romance being torn apart before it has even had a chance is classic, and the makers of this film do a superb job in creating an appealing atmosphere to the viewer. About 6 years after I had first seen this film, I was flipping through the channels on TV and my attention was drawn to the actor who plays Michael - Corin Nemec (a hottie by my standards). The casting and acting in this movie was great. If it had been out in the theaters, I am sure I would have paid my $7 to go see it. My only complaint is (an if you are going to watch the movie for the first time you might not want to read on) that if these two young people were experiencing true love, why would they only have written to one another for one year and stopped?

Should never have been made at all!
star5421 March 1999
This made-for-tv disappointment could have been done so much better.Everything was way off. It takes place in 1960, yet 95% you can't tell because everyone talks like it's when the movie was made (1991). The costumes looked very made for the movie while they could have been authentic, and the accents (supposed to be Texan) were non-existent.The acting was alright, but the plot was a bore.Save your time and money and rent something worth watching!!
