Glaze of Cathexis (1990)

*** (out of 4)

This Brakhage short runs exactly three minutes and once again features all sorts of strange colors, shapes and objects. I guess the best way to describe this film is as an acid trip meant to give your eyes a real ride. Even though I'm new to this director I can picture many people watching this film and asking what the point of it is and I wouldn't have a good answer for them because I'm not even sure what the point of the movie is. Even with that said, the film drew me in with its strangeness and not once did I get bored even though we're seeing the same type of thing over and over.

The usual boring Brakhage

Warning: Spoilers
Prolific American filmmaker Stan Brakhage shot this 3-minute movie in 1990, already in the later stages of his career and life. He was divorced by his longtime wife Jane at this point already, but his style was just the same as always. lots of flickering, lots of color and the shots change so quickly that you have no idea what is happening. I did not know before watching these 180 seconds what Cathexis means and I don't know after watching it. I guess only Brakhage understand exactly what he tells here and what message he is sending. I generally do not like the director's approach to filmmaking. Lots of style over substance and this film is is no exception. Thumbs down.
