Veteran actor Jeff Kober spoke about working with his director and costar, Jake Johnson, in the movie Self Reliance in his new uInterview.
The film centers on Johnson’s character, Tommy, and what happens to him when he accepts an invitation to play a game where he has to outsmart hunters who are trying to kill him. If he is successful and lives, then he will win a million dollars.
When Kober was asked if he would survive a death game like the one in the movie he replied, “It’s just way too much work. It’s like a whole month he has to be on the ball and you see during the course of the movie that it’s not that easy,” he told uInterview exclusively at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

He also described what it was like to work with Johnson in the movie.

Plot: A detective teams up with a professor of African studies to stop a serial killer who has been making ritual sacrifices of local youths.
Review: The story and screenplay for The Ritual Killer were cobbled together by a writing team of five different people: Bob Bowersox, Francesco Cinquemani, Luca Giliberto, Jennifer Lemmon, and Joe Lemmon. Director George Gallo then endeavored to bring their work to the screen as a film that really feels like it wants to live up to classic, gritty serial killer crime thrillers of the past. They even got a dash of Seven in there by casting Morgan Freeman in a supporting role. The film just wasn’t written quite well enough to reach the heights of the classics, and at times it seems like the script was assembled by having each of the writers contribute their favorite elements from past movies.

Great Freedom, starring Franz Rogowski, is showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries starting May 7, 2022. The actor is also the subject of Mubi's retrospective, Franz Rogowski: Man of the Hour.Franz Rogowski in Great Freedom (2021).Some people just have it—"it" here being largely indefinable and perhaps even a quality others also possess but for whatever reason doesn’t galvanize the masses like that rare individual. German actor Franz Rogowski is one of those people, a once-in-a-generation talent whose meteoric rise has been as surprising as it is warranted. Though he’d featured prominently as both a lead (in German director Jakob Lass’s 2013 bizarre romantic improvisation Love Steaks) and a supporting player, Rogowski’s star truly began to rise when Berlin School auteur Christian Petzold cast him in his 2018 masterpiece Transit, which launched the face that launched a thousand appreciations of it, particularly in the United States where he had theretofore been largely unknown.

It’s intriguing for a long-term fan of a director, perhaps even one whose films you’ve grown up alongside the last decade or two, to watch them stumble slightly. But for Claire Denis, the remarkable auteur in question, even her strongest works can have a teetering, tentative quality, as if you were discovering the dawning narrative and emotional progression in tandem with her.
Stars at Noon––based on a minor novel by the underrated American author Denis Johnson––is Denis’ second film to premiere this year, after Both Sides of the Blade at the Berlinale, and a slightly rocky reaction to that film diminished some of the anticipation for this one. Her latest work is not one that feels fully achieved and realized, suggesting an absolutely confident mastery of her primary source material, but it’s still deeply watchable, laden with sex and intimacy in a way that doesn’t apologize for itself,...

“I am going to commit murder. I am going to kill another human being. How easy it is to say, already I feel like a criminal. Creepy (Kiyoshi Kurosawa)
One has to appreciate Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s winking self-awareness in calling his new feature Creepy. It’s as if the Coen brothers released a film entitled Snarky, or Eli Roth named his next stomach-churner Gory. Kurosawa, who’s still best known for Cure (1997) and Pulse (2001), two rare outstanding examples of the highly variable J-Horror genre, instills a sense of creepiness into virtually anything he does, regardless of subject matter. His latest, which sees him return to the realm of horror after excursions into more arthouse territory, certainly lives up to its name and has a lot of fun doing so. – Giovanni M.C. (full review)

As Disney quietly disappears huge swathes of film history into its vaults, I'm going to spend 2020 celebrating Twentieth Century Fox and the Fox Film Corporation's films, what one might call their output if only someone were putting it out.And now they've quietly disappeared William Fox's name from the company: guilty by association with Rupert Murdoch, even though he never associated with him.***Dangerous Crossing was directed by Joseph M. Newman in 1953, not long before the one title he's semi-remembered for, This Island Earth. It seems to have been greenlit as a B-picture to take advantage of the sets built for Fox's Titanic, as it's an ocean voyage mystery.Newlywed Jeanne Crain boards ship with her husband, who promptly vanishes, and nobody will admit to ever having seen him. Of course the plot kernel was used before, by writers Launder and Gilliat for director Hitchcock in The Lady Vanishes.

Joan Crawford would’ve celebrated her 114th birthday on March 23, 2020. Though she’s probably best remembered for the portrayals of her by other actresses, the Oscar-winning performer starred in a number of classics before her death in 1977 at the age of 71. In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1906, Crawford made her debut as a body double for Norma Shearer in “Ladies of the Night” (1925). She worked her way up into starring roles in several MGM titles, most notably the ensemble drama “Grand Hotel” (1932). Yet a dip in audience enthusiasm led to her being labeled “box office poison,” which would haunt her for several years.
Crawford moved to Warner Bros. in 1943, and just two years later, she was re-igniting the box office and scooping up a Best Actress Oscar for “Mildred Pierce” (1945). The role of an...

Crawford moved to Warner Bros. in 1943, and just two years later, she was re-igniting the box office and scooping up a Best Actress Oscar for “Mildred Pierce” (1945). The role of an...

A deadly shapeshifter takes what it means to be human away from his victims in the new movie Lifechanger, and with the new horror thriller coming out soon in the Us from Uncork'd Entertainment and in Canada from Raven Banner, Daily Dead caught up with writer/director Justin McConnell for our latest Q&A feature to discuss the movie's inception in 2014, the cinematic influences pulsating in the movie's DNA, and the massive practical effects scene that took the combined efforts of 10 people to pull off.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on your latest film, Lifechanger. When and how did you originally come up with the idea for this movie?
Justin McConnell: In 2014 I was getting frustrated with not being able to get a couple of larger films—The Eternal and Tripped—made. So I started brainstorming an idea that could be done on a very limited budget.

The closest you’ll get to an R-rated Venom movie this month.
Dick Durkin: I don't think this thing thinks it's Satan, I think this thing Is Satan.
Stone: Well Satan is in deep s***!
Venom is one of the most recognizable comic-book villains of all time, but its fair to say he hasn't had a smooth ride on the big screen. Sam Raimi's noted distaste for the character didn't bode well when the studio insisted he include Venom as an antagonist in Spider-Man 3. While using the symbiote as a means to explore Peter Parker's dark side was intriguing, Topher Grace's take on Venom proved majorly disappointing to many. Raimi has since admitted he just didn't get the appeal of the character, and a planned solo movie was scrapped.
Channing Tatum was rumored to be interested in taking on a Venom movie during The Amazing Spider-Man era,...

Seasons After Fall, developed by Swing Swing Submarine, is a new 2D plat-former/puzzle game with an excellent balance of riveting gameplay and meditative story-telling, all wrapped up in one beautiful little package.
It tells the story of a newly born spirit, brought into the world to complete a specific task; perform the Ritual of Seasons to save the life of the forest. As this spirit, you’ll need to gather the power of the four seasons to complete the challenge laid out before you. These powers give you the potential to change the seasons at will, allowing you to traverse new areas as your abilities grow. From there the story takes a few twists and turns that I won’t spoil for you here, but I will say it is a story that is definitely unexpected.

Following the release of those pretty cool character posters, Lionsgate has today unleashed the first teaser trailer for their upcoming Power Rangers reboot. Surprisingly, there’s no sign of the team in action, the classic supporting characters (outside of the villainous Rita Repulsa), or even their gigantic Zords. Instead, this sheds some light on their origin […]

After making blood-splattered summer memories at Camp Arawak, the Sleepaway Camp franchise pointed its cameras at two new seasonal spots: Camp Rolling Hills and Camp New Horizons. Crackling bonfires, burned flesh, and slice-and-dice slayings wound their way into the busy camp curriculums in both Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers and Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland, and to help kick off their Summer of Fear: Part 2, Scream Factory will release both Pamela Springsteen-starring sequels in bonus features-packed Blu-ray / DVD Collector's Editions on June 9th:

Kino Lorber releases 1990 supernatural cop thriller The First Power on Blu-ray this month, though time has been nothing but unkind to the film’s B-movie tropes that capitalized on the star power of the then very popular Lou Diamond Phillips. Opening in April, 1990 to generally tepid response, it was the sophomore feature of director and screenwriter Robert Resnikoff, who would not direct or write any features thereafter (though he had a couple previous screenwriting credits that must have warranted some promise, including the Lewis Teague directed Jay Leno/Pat Morita action comedy Collision Course). By today’s more lofty standards, Resnikoff’s serial killing acumen seems woefully cornball.
L.A. homicide detective Russell Logan (Lou Diamond Phillips) is no stranger to hunting serial killers, but he may have met his match after catching the Pentagram killer (Jeff Kober). A street wise psychic (Tracy Griffith) warns Logan against what might happen...

Happy October! With Halloween only a few weeks away, it seems that the month’s home entertainment choices are going to be endless just based on the amount of titles being released on October 7th alone.
Not only is Edge of Tomorrow (one of the best sci-fi movies of the year) coming to DVD and Blu-ray, but we’re also seeing several cult classics coming to HD for the first time, numerous horror franchise collections are being re-released and we’ve got the highly anticipated 35th Anniversary Edition of Alien from 20th Century Fox to look forward to as well.
Spotlight Titles:
Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Home Video, Blu-ray 3D/Blu/DVD/Digital HD & DVD)
An alien race, undefeatable by any existing military unit, has launched a relentless attack on Earth, and Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) finds himself dropped into a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage is thrown into a time loop,...

Last year, James put together a comprehensive guide, of every piece of Halloween programming and horror movie that would air during the month of October. When I asked him if we were doing the same again this year, he acted like I was an idiot. Why wouldn’t we? With that knowledge in my head, I decided we would expand a little bit this year, and throw together a comprehensive DVD & Blu-ray buyer’s guide for the months of September and October. There are some really great horror releases between now and the end of October. Some studios wasted their opportunity to rope in the rabid genre fans. Fox, for example, except for a new Wrong Turn film, and a few catalog releases making their Blu-ray debuts(Exorcist sequels), has a calendar filled with nonsensical re-releases of titles that are already widely available, and at cheap prices.

If there was one genre that spawned countless knock-offs (some better than the films they were imitating, others not so much) it was the slasher film. Even some films that were touted as the greats amongst the sub-genre would be still hidden in the shadows of the films they were emulating. There’s a waterfall effect to these films that start with Psycho and fall through Black Christmas onto Friday the 13th. But within the sub-genre, a splintering could be found as well, creating a mutated family hierarchy of slasherdom. Every slasher film had to find some sort of way of setting itself apart from the other, by creating some sort of different villain who was unstoppable and creative in ways that kept bodies in seats.

Back when I manned the horror section of the video store I worked at, anytime I’d find a customer skimming through all the “S” titles with mild frustration, 99 percent of the time, I knew exactly what it was they were looking for. And when I would finally ask, my suspicions were confirmed. “Do you have ‘The Silence Of The Lamb’”? To which I’d always reply, “Ah, the Hannibal Lector movies are all in the ‘mystery/thriller’ section.” And usually this would spur a conversation with that customer that would begin with, “Really? I always thought the Hannibal Lector movies were horror!” And it got me thinking about a handful of other titles that horror fans might not even think to hunt for in the “mystery/thriller” section. There are the obvious choices like Se7en or Misery. Then, there’s also stuff like The Sixth Sense, which yes,...

The quaint Swedish town of Backberga appears to be living in the 1970s, at least judging from the characters' fashion sense and the architectural design. Backberga is best known as the home to Universal Communication Development -- otherwise known as Unicom -- a telecom company that has also failed to keep up with the world around it. The old white guys who run Unicom are completely clueless as to why they are stuck in a technological quagmire. Their solution: hire a hip, young marketing guy to whip up some new corporate branding. No one seems to realize that Unicom's biggest problems are related to the recurring black-outs which repeatedly leave Backberga in the dark. The first power outage is accidentally caused by couple of hapless Unicom electrical engineers -- Roland (Jimmy Lindström) and Jörgen (Olle Sarri) -- and it is this event that serves as the catalyst that sets the...

I thought being paired with your ex or arch enemy was pretty insane, but this year's MTV Challenge: Battle of the Seasons is already gearing up to be the craziest season yet. Four castmembers from nine previous Real World seasons went to Turkey to compete for $250,000. Let's get into it!
|Related: Check out the cast superlatives we gave!|
As the cast trickles in, they start talking about the competition. Some of them are on good terms and some of them... not so much.
"To be quite honest, most of the people here are idiots." - Chet
"I don't have anyone who's even in my league." - Wes
Tj introduces everyone and lets them all know the "twist" this season (as if they didn't figure it out already). "You guys have been through a lot together. Relationships, friends, fights, maybe been romantic, maybe divorced. But right now, you guys are going to be reunited.

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro.
Director/writer: Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro.
Cast: Rafael Tombini, Álvaro Rosa Costa and Ricardo Seffner.
Portos dos Mortos or Beyond the Grave is currently making the rounds on the film festival circuits in North America. A more accurate translation of the Portuegese title is Portals of the Dead and this film is from Brazilian director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro. Pinheiro has developed a suitable action thriller here set in a zombie apocalypse. The desolate locales and makeup effects highlight the apocalypse, while a western genred film tries to develop in the character's dress and armaments. The characters are what made this film interesting to one reviewer and fans of indie zombie fiction should seek this film out.

Last night was the premiere episode of MTV's latest version of The Challenge: Battle of the Exes. It's been a while since I've made it through an entire season of one of these, mostly because somewhere towards the middle I usually end up feeling like I'm about to catch an Std through the screen or there ends up being too much Wes camera time. I would rather be locked inside a room with this video playing on repeat than have to watch that ginger dill-hole for five minutes.
This season I've decided to devote my time to the show because after interviewing Rachel Robinson and Aneesa Feirrera, the show's only gay team, I was intrigued by how Rachel described her feelings upon coming home. Also, who am I kidding, I don't really need an excuse to watch something like this; I live for it.

The first Power of Veto ceremony has taken place in the "Big Brother 13" house. Find out what happened. Warning: Spoilers.
After winning the first Power of Veto, Rachel and Brendon chose not to use the Pov to remove Keith and Porsche from the block, so thankfully one of our least favorite new houseguests will be leaving on Thursday.
Keith and Porsche have done nothing but cause drama since they came into the house and not the good kind. Keith is paranoid and thinks he is a lot smarter than he really is, while Porsche is a bit whiny and does not seem to like Cassi at all because she threatens Porsche's spot as Prettiest Girl in the House.
It's no big surprise that Brenchel chose not to use the Pov, but now we are curious as to who the houseguests choose to evict - and who they choose to give a Golden Key to.

Justin Lubin/NBC Laura Innes as Sophia Maguire in “The Event.”
It’s all about power plays and counter-power plays in “The Event’s” universe, as was on display in last night’s episode, “Turnabout.”

Well, At Least I Won't Get Called Poncy Again. I Hope....
As you read this week's column, I'll already be attending the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour down in Pasadena, California. And before I've attended a single panel, I can already pretty much guarantee this is going to be one of the weaker (gay) tours in memory. For starters, CBS hasn't given us a single screener for their two new shows (which sound utterly conventional and appear to be gay free. Shock!) and even ABC which is reliably gay-friendly, doesn't have anything that looks terribly promising.
Honestly, Starz looks to be the best bet between Spartacus: Gods of the Arena and Torchwood, but since for some reason, Russell T Davies won't be available for me to interview during the TCA, even that won't take up quite as much as my time. Fortunately, Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight is available...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

"Big Brother 12" is off to a roaring start -- we are really digging this year's cast. The first Power of Veto ceremony has already happened on the live feeds, so don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled.
To get you up to speed -- Brendon and Rachel were nominated by Hoh Hayden. Brendon appeared to be the target by the alliance of Hayden, Matt and Enzo. But Brendon put a wrench in those plans by winning Power of Veto. What made that a bit interesting is that apparently Brendon and Rachel are getting hot 'n heavy in the first showmance of the season.
But Brendon predictably used the Pov on himself (and why wouldn't he?), so Hayden had to nominated someone else. Annie was put up in Brendon's place and she is absolutely the target. Annie sensed that something weird was going on because no one in...

Lou Diamond Philips has played a sheriff that fought winged killers in Bats and a cop hunting a devilish psycho in The First Power. Now La Bamba is going to need all his monster-policing prowess if he's going to survive an encounter with "The Jersey Devil" in the new creature feature Carny.
"When a traveling carnival comes to a rural Nebraska town, the caged attraction everyone is talking about is the alleged Jersey Devil. When the beast escapes, tearing the citizens to shreds, local sheriff Sam Atlas (Lou Diamond Philips) steps up to form a tracking team. But the carnivorous fugitive is only one of Sam's problems. The local pastor, enraged by the death of his son at the hands of the beast, has plans for igniting his own brand of hellfire and revenge."
You know when I think "Jersey Devil", I usually think Nebraska, and when I envision...
