Part of the beauty of the "Star Wars" universe is how big and populated it is. Not only did the original trilogy deliver groundbreaking visual effects, but George Lucas wrote enough backstory and worldbuilding while working on the first film to sustain decades' worth of "Star Wars" movies. That worldbuilding also resulted in hundreds of smaller background characters that became overnight fan favorites once the movies — and the merchandise — started arriving. Even the most inconsequential one-off characters suddenly became beloved by audiences despite there being little to no official information available about them — at least, until we got entire novels and books devoted to every Glup Shitto and Max Rebo out there.
Of course, not every character gets that treatment. In fact, there is one character we only know the name of because the actor decided to take matters into his own hands during shooting — Quarsh Panaka. You remember that guy,...

2023 has, overall, felt like an up year at the box office. We've had massive hits like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" that helped deliver a monster summer movie season, we've had original films like Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" find their audience, and horror has reigned supreme with the likes of "M3GAN" and "Five Nights at Freddy's" putting a lot of butts in seats. Disney, however, has had a down year and, as evidence of that, not a single one of the studio's mega-budget blockbusters released this year will cross the $1 billion mark.
Disney's highest-grossing movie of the year is director James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which topped out at $845 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo. That makes it the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year behind "Oppenheimer" ($950 million), "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion), and "Barbie" ($1.44 billion). From there, it's a steep drop-off, with Disney's next biggest...

Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel kicked off their much-anticipated co-headlining tour Friday night at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium, and while both artists delivered their own concerts’ worth of music, they each appeared for a song during the other’s set.
Early in Nicks’ set, Joel shuffled onstage to contribute the Tom Petty part on the classic “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” Midway through Joel’s 21-song set, Nicks appeared to sing his ballad “And So It Goes.”

Woody Allen says that he intends to retire from directing after his next movie, "Wasp 22," which is set in Paris and will begin filming later this month.
The news broke in an interview with Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia (via Variety), where the 86-year-old Allen said that "my idea, in principle, is not to make more movies and focus on writing." The "in principle" suggests that these retirement plans are not entirely fixed, and may potentially be a "retirement" in the Hayao Miyazaki sense of the word. For now, though, Allen's intention is to finish his current film and then focus on writing a novel.
This announcement isn't entirely out of the blue. In an interview with Alec Baldwin livestreamed on Instagram earlier this year, Allen indicated that his retirement from filmmaking was imminent, pointing to the decline of the theatrical experience as the reason:
"I'll probably make at least one more movie.

Earlier this year, Film at Lincoln Center announced Cate Blanchett as the recipient of the organization’s 47th Chaplin Award, presented earlier this week (April 25) at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. Congrats to her, and in the lead-up to this event, Blanchett appeared on The Film Comment Podcast to discuss her entire career.
While she touched upon many great classic works of the past, including Todd Haynes‘ “I’m Not There” (where she played a version of Bob Dylan) and Jim Jarmusch‘s “Coffee & Cigarettes” (where she played two versions of herself), one of the most exciting parts of the conversation centered on her future projects Pedro Almodóvar‘s “A Manual For Cleaning Women,” and Todd Field‘s long-awaited new feature “Tár,” his first film since 2006’s “Little Children.

Why stay in your lane when you can veer into other roadways with your own turbo-charged vehicles? With “A Fall from Grace,” mogul Tyler Perry swerves back and forth between his usual woman-centered melodrama and a quasi-thriller. Shot over just five days in late 2019,
As is his intriguing way, however, Perry delivers some grace notes with the casting. Crystal Fox is especially compelling when playing the title character in her jailhouse state, defeated and shell-shocked. Over the years, a number of stellar female actors have tithed their time to the church of Tyler Perry. Here it’s Perry regulars Cicely Tyson, in an understated but pivotal turn, touching for its frailty, and Phylicia Rashad as Grace’s deeply supportive best friend, Sarah.

When “Episodes” premieres its final season at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, April 30, it will mark the first time new episodes have aired in over two years. The Season 4 finale of Matt LeBlanc’s scathing Hollywood satire debuted in March 2015, and even though the award-winning Showtime comedy has taken year-plus breaks before, we still don’t have an official release date from Showtime for Season 5.
If the wait has been hard on fans, they should know the creators are pained, as well.
“It’s been torturous, actually,” co-creator Jeffrey Klarik said in an interview with IndieWire. “We finished on June 3 [2016]. The show is done and ready to air. As soon as Showtime finds a time for us, we’ll be on.”
“We can’t wait to get back on the air,” fellow co-creator David Crane said. “It’s been a drawn out process because Jeffrey and I write all the episodes.

Grimm‘s Diana may be the cutest — yet creepiest — little supernatural Ob-gyn around.

If this week’s Grimm has a lesson to impart, it’s that even when you’re fighting heinous evil, there’s always time for a little slapstick.
While the supernatural drama doesn’t go full Three Stooges on us in “Oh Captain, My Captain” — there is, after all, a power-hungry mayor-elect to take down — it certainly saved its zaniest installment in recent memory for star David Giuntoli to direct.
It’s a little silly, sure, but it’s also fun to see Grimm ham it up a little in its final season.

Capt. Renard continues to keep in the Grimm gang in his sights in this week’s episode, and it’s not looking good for Nick & Co. — just in case you thought David Giuntoli‘s directorial debut would be a fanciful bottle episode or a lighthearted musical romp.
As the exclusive sneak peek from tonight’s hour (NBC, 8/7c) shows us, Nick & Co. are hard at work in the Spice Shop basement when the cops case the place — and nearly nab Monroe in the process. After they leave, the Blutbad makes tracks to his pals downstairs, and they mobilize quickly.

Has anyone checked to make sure Zauberbiests aren’t part Teflon? Because, man, nothing sticks to Grimm‘s slippery Sean Renard.
Though the corrupt politician/police chief finds himself in a very bad way in this week’s episode — falsely accused of the murder of his campaign manager and sometime lover — he somehow ends the hour as a free man, striding confidently down the courthouse steps and calling for someone to bring him Nick Burkhardt.
Sure, there’s that pesky matter of his having disturbing visions about killing Meisner.

1. “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” (available November 25)
Why Should I Watch It? Capping America’s year of nostalgia, Netflix is finally releasing the much-anticipated “Gilmore Girls” revival. Told in four 90-minutes segments, the new episodes will reunite the stars and creator of the early aughts favorite, similar to recent continuations on Netflix and elsewhere. Needles to say, anyone who visited Stars Hollow before is quite eager to see where on the ‘member berries spectrum “A Year in the Life” will fall: the high of “Stranger Things” or the low of “Fuller House”?
Best Episode: From what we’ve seen of the new footage, things are looking good for Amy Sherman-Palladino’s fresh stories. That being said, we haven’t snagged a screener of any episodes, so we’re on pins and needles with the rest of you.

Last Week’S Review: Chapter 6 Is a Total Game Changer
Setting The Scene
While last week was largely devoted to setting up “American Horror Story’s” new found footage status quo, “Chapter 7” puts its foot on the accelerator and doesn’t let up. “Chapter 6” gave me hope that the back half of “Roanoke” might live up to past seasons, and this week’s episode cranks up the scares and the Wtf moments that have always been the show’s trademark. Who knows if the remainder of Season 6 can keep up this pace, but for now it’s nice to enjoy the ride.
Fact vs. Fiction

Nothing is a coincidence or an accident in Mr. Robot, Sam Esmail's hacker psychothriller that wormed its way into last year's TV season like a particularly efficient computer virus. Visually stunning and meticulously plotted, the first season tapped into a rich vein of paranoia and disillusion running through the heart of late-stage capitalist society — in other words, it's not exactly your typical USA Network fare, a channel known for play-it-safe shows like Royal Pains and White Collar.

The mysticism is coming thick and fast in Daredevil season two, which lays groundwork for Iron Fist and a possible season 3 tease...
Please remember to keep spoilers for future episodes out of the comments!
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting the Kingpin to be back so soon after last episode, but I’m glad he is because the face-to-face confrontation of Murdock and Fisk is probably my favourite scene of the series yet. Seeing Matt’s confidence utterly undone by the sudden fury of the Kingpin as he reveals this extent of his control, slamming Matt’s surprised face into the table while the guard looks the other way was utterly fantastic. Clearly, it was a bad move trying to go through Vanessa to get to Fisk.
Claire’s reappearance is always welcome, and I’m enjoying the way her own arc is moving through the various Marvel shows.

Marvel's Daredevil gets into Stick's mythology in episode 7, and does not leave James disappointed. Here are his viewing notes...
With the whole series of Daredevil now available on Netflix, the race is on to reach the ending before someone spoils it for you. But that presents us with a problem. How do we approach reviews? It's not much use speculating about the future of the series when it's available at a moment's notice, but watching the whole thing in one go for a single review is impractical for anyone with a day job and personal relationships to maintain – to say nothing of how difficult it is to critically appraise 12 hours of television if you don't savour the instalments properly.
That's why, instead of traditional reviews, we're trying something new. An episode-by-episode unpicking of the show, looking at its techniques, characters and use of the source material. Call them annotations, call them show notes,...

The “Empire” drama just keeps coming — even when the Fox hip-hop soap opera isn’t airing. Mo’Nique is speaking out and taking issue with comments made by “Precious” director Lee Daniels, who said the Oscar-winning actress fell from grace in Hollywood for making unreasonable demands. Daniels comments essentially confirmed reports that Mo’Nique was “blackballed” following her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the 2009 drama. But in an interview Thursday with Don Lemon on “CNN Tonight,” the actress insisted she was offered parts in other movies, “they just didn’t make sense to me,” she said. Fox’s “Empire” looks like it may never fall — in the ratings, at least — and the hip-hop soap opera just stole some of “Scandal’s” social media thunder too. Based on Nielsen Social Guide and Twitter metrics, “Empire” now has the highest average number of tweets per episode during live airings of any broadcast drama this season. The music-centric show took that crown from Kerry Washington‘s fixer drama, which airs Thursday nights on ABC. Amanda Bynes is looking happier and healthier this holiday season since completing more than four months of inpatient treatment. The actress, 27, shopped in Los Angeles on Sunday, wearing a floral sweatshirt with skinny jeans and sneakers, and topping off the ensemble with pretty golden curls. Bynes was forcibly hospitalized in July after starting a small fire on a household driveway in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The former Nickelodeon starlet is continuing to recover at her parents' home. "Amanda and her entire family would like to thank everyone who's contacted them with good thoughts and wishes for Amanda's recovery," family attorney Tamar Arminak told People exclusively.

Amanda Bynes has moved from a psychiatric hospital to a rehab center in Malibu and is "making great strides toward recovery," a family lawyer says. The troubled actress, 27, departed UCLA Medical Center about three weeks ago for The Canyon, where she is on an extended psychiatric hold for being gravely disabled as a result of a mental disorder."Amanda was stuck with people in much worse condition than her," her parents' attorney, Tamar Arminak, tells TMZ. "She was scared, afraid and did not leave her immediate room area." At The Caynon, Arminak adds, "She is getting specialized psych care, one on one treatment,...

Gonna be a pretty intense week for comics; the big debuts this week are the highly-anticipated Trillium and Sidekick, one from a critical darling comic writer/artist, the other from an established name whose recent comeback has been making headlines. But there’s several other hits that dropped alongside and, for once, I’m regretting limiting myself to only three titles. But I’d prefer not to strain my meager critic credence with too much Bs so you only get to trudge through a few of these things. Also, I have to pay for these comics, so yeah: $$$.

Amanda Bynes is still in need of serious medical care. In a Ventura, Calif., courtroom Friday, it was revealed the actress is now under a 30-day psychiatric hold initiated by her doctor, after she had been hospitalized for 17 days. Judge Glen M. Reiser agreed with her doctor's finding "of her lack of capacity to give consent for medical care," and approved, temporarily, the actress's mother Lynn Bynes's request to take legal control over her daughter's well-being and finances. While the actress is hospitalized, however, her doctor will maintain authority over her treatment. The actress's court-appointed attorney, Mary Shea, told the...

Amanda Bynes has been placed on an immediate, extended 30-day psychiatric hold, ahead of a planned conservatorship hearing Friday morning in L.A. Doctors at the psychiatric hospital where the troubled actress has been held the last two weeks determined she was not well enough to leave the hospital to attend the hearing, where Bynes's parents are trying to win temporary conservatorship. Bynes's doctors went to the judge overseeing the actress's case, sources told TMZ, and the judge traveled to the hospital to conduct an emergency hearing. After that meeting, the judge granted the doctors' request. According to the law, doctors...

At a hearing two weeks ago, a Ventura, Calif., judge was being extra cautious: He wanted to see Amanda Bynes in person before granting her mother, Lynn, 66, temporary legal control of her life. Bynes, 27, who's been forcibly hospitalized for the past 17 days since allegedly setting fire to a neighbor's driveway, is expected to be escorted to the courthouse Friday by hospital staff for the pivotal hearing. "What happens to Amanda next largely depends on what her treating doctor recommends," says Jeffrey S. Cohen, an L.A. attorney who's not involved with the case. "If Amanda has improved, is cooperative and recognizes she needs treatment,...

A judge in Oxnard, Calif., is taking extra precautions before handing over legal control of Amanda Bynes's life to her parents. Ventura County Superior Court Judge Glen M. Reiser stated that, because the actress is currently under a 14-day psychiatric hold after a reported driveway-burning incident, an emergency decision wasn't necessary. Rick, 68, and Lynn Bynes, 66, appeared somber as they attended the Friday hearing along with their attorney Tamar Arminak, who stated that the reason for the conservatorship application was because the parents feared their daughter would be released following her three-day hold. "My clients only want the best for their daughter,...

Amanda Bynes is not getting out of a psychiatric hospital anytime soon, following a judge's decision to allow her held there for two more weeks. At the same time, her parents are now trying to take legal control of the actress's life. TMZ reports that late Thursday a judge granted an involuntary hold for up to two weeks following a hearing at the hospital where Bynes has been under evaluation since earlier this week. Meanwhile, Rick, 68, and Lynne Bynes, 66, have filed an application for conservatorship over their daughter, according to multiple reports. Prosecutors in South Africa were defeated Friday in their effort to deny bail for "Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee track star accused of the premeditated Feb. 14 murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius will be released on U.S. $114,000 bail, CNN reports. Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair announced his decision in a packed Pretoria courtroom Friday afternoon. Over the past four days during the bail hearing, both authorities and Pistorius's legal team agreed that he killed Steenkamp, 29, but the athlete says he killed her accidentally after he mistook her for an intruder. In final arguments Friday morning, prosecutor Gerrie Nel,...

In a bizarre development in the Oscar Pistorius investigation, the top police detective on the case was replaced Thursday after it was revealed he also is facing charges of attempted murder - connected to an incident 18 months ago in which he fired shots at a minivan. In October 2011, Hilton Botha and two other officers tried to stop a van they believed was carrying a murder suspect by shooting at it, the New York Times reports. The van was carrying seven people. Botha was charged with attempted murder. The charges were later dropped, but were reinstated this week - which police called a complete coincidence.

As a bail hearing continued Wednesday in the murder case of South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius, new details have emerged as prosecutors outline their charges that he is guilty of shooting his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp. Police testified that they discovered testosterone and needles inside the "Blade Runner" Olympian's home, The New York Times reports. But his defense lawyers said the Olympian took no banned performance-enhancing drugs, describing the substances found as herbal. The athletes, according to the International Paralympic Committee, tested drug-free as late as last September. Pistorius, 26, has claimed the shooting was a case of mistaken identity. Prosecution lawyers,...

The producer of the South African reality show, Samantha Moon, issued a statement, announcing that pre-taped series, which features Reeva Steenkamp, who was murdered on Thursday, will indeed air on Saturday as planned. "Reeva was an intelligent, beautiful and amazing woman, and we feel it would be an injustice to keep that unknown from those who did not know her personally," Moon says in the statement. "Every episode that she is in, every frame that she so ably dominates - shines with her light and her laughter echoes in every conversation,...

House M.D. is the multi-award winning Us TV series starring English actor Hugh Laurie alongside a host of other stars including Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard, Jesse Spencer, Peter Jacobson and Olivia Wilde. The show has received four Emmys from twenty-three nominations, two Golden Globes and two Screen Actors Guild awards and has gone from being a speculative entry into the already crowded market of TV medical dramas to being an outstanding show.
Hugh Laurie plays grumpy and sarcastic Doctor Gregory House whose bedside manner is entirely absent and whose constant companion is his walking stick as he struggles to manage his constant physical pain while running the diagnostic unit of Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.
