Quotes
-
Gary Wallace : [in passionate clinch] Is this your idea of a deep and lasting relationship?
Martha Travis : That's right. This way men lie with me, not to me.
-
Walter Travis : Your mother saw *nothing!* You don't still believe that cock and bull story, do you? You were with me in St. Louis, remember? Hundreds of miles away. You *couldn't* have appeared to her.
[leans over Martha]
Walter Travis : You know your mother's problem? Religion!
[Martha chuckles]
Walter Travis : Hmm.
[nods]
Walter Travis : Too much *religion.* She never did see you like she said. It was all in her *dreams.*
[Martha shakes her head]
Walter Travis : Now, you must apologize to that poor woman. I have her waiting outside.
Martha Travis : [tearfully] I'm not apologizing!
Walter Travis : You will!
Martha Travis : No! I *can't*! I saw it! I saw it, all of it!
[sobs]
Walter Travis : You heard what the woman said. Her husband *isn't* dead.
Martha Travis : [sobs] She's wrong...
Walter Travis : You heard what she said. He's at home watching TV. In some households, that's considered being *alive.* Now, now,
[strokes her arm]
Walter Travis : yes, you must apologize, sweetheart. You frightened the *life* out of her.
Martha Travis : What about me, Daddy?
Walter Travis : Why should you be frightened? You've been doing this since you were a kid.
Martha Travis : [yells out:] It was different this time. You have to believe me!
-
Gary Wallace : Try to describe what you see, Martha.
Martha Travis : Stay away from me! Only vultures like the dead!
-
Martha Travis : There you are, wanting, waiting for me to provide you with something to believe in. You'd hate me if I told you that when we die, we'd return to nothing. To the exact state we were in before we were born. You'd hate me, wouldn't you?
[audience murmurs that's exactly how it is]
Martha Travis : But if you knew for certain that there is *nothing* after death, that you only had one shot, someone said to me this morning,
[shrugs]
Martha Travis : maybe if we didn't indulge in the arrogance of thinking we'd go on forever,
[shakes her head]
Martha Travis : we'd be better people while we are alive.
[finds some approval with some members of the audience]
Martha Travis : Think of that.
