- TriviaMichael Dudikoff had to be rushed to a hospital to have needles removed from one of his eyes.
- GoofsThe troops guarding Manteuffel's lab at the beginning of the film are improperly uniformed. They wear the Nazi party swastika armbands although they are clearly wearing Wehrmacht army uniforms. The armband was only worn by SS troops and Nazi officials and, by this point in the war, only with full dress uniforms and not in the field.

Lousy, strictly phony cheapjack adventure tale
My review was written in May 1989 after a Cannes Film Festival Market screening.
Generally ill-served on screen during his lifetime, novelist Alistair MacLean gets a posthumous slap in the face with Cannon's "River of Death, an impoverished quota quickie.
Tipped off immediately by his languid voice-over narration, erstwhile action hero Michael Dudikoff gives a sleepy performance as John Hamilton, a guide whose pretty client (Sarah Maur Thorp) is captured in the Amazon jungle by cannibals. He mounts a motley expedition to go back after her, including mercenary L. Q. Jones, a couple of Israeli Nazi-hunters plus a shady rich guy (Donald Pleasence) and his young girlfriend (Cynthia Erland).
Everyone wants to get to a lost city, and final confrontation between a couple of feuding Nazis ends with a whimper, not a bang as the daughter of yet another Nazi they both wronged comes back to haunt them.
Director Steve Carver fails to disguise the pic's woeful absence of action. Similarly, the pic's South African locations do not convincingly double for its South American setting, reaching ludicrous extremes when black Africans are outfitted with stringy wigs to simulate Indians, Pleasence and Robert Vaughn try in their umpteenth assignment as Nazis; pic is set in 1965 so they don't have to look too old. Herbert Lom is laughingly cast as a Brazilian police chief, while blonde newcomer Erland bears an uncanny resemblance to the slain Playboy model Dorothy R. Stratten, except for her oversized front teeth.
