On November 13, 1974, at 112 Ocean Ave. in Amityville, New York, a young man named Ronald DeFeo woke up in the middle of the night, took up a shotgun, and went from room to room in his home, systematically murdering six members of his family. DeFeo was apprehended by the police. At first, DeFeo claimed the murders were mob-related, but he later confessed to committing the crimes himself. He was sentenced to 25 years to life for his crimes. DeFeo died in prison in 2021.
DeFeo's murders became notorious with the publication of Jay Anson's nonfiction book "The Amityville Horror" in 1977. After the killings, the Lutz family moved into 112 Ocean Ave., and they claimed to experience a panoply of paranormal phenomena. Flies mobbed the building, and the entire Lutz family reported hearing eerie voices. George Lutz, the family patriarch, claimed to be possessed by a demonic presence that was driving him to kill his family.

Geralyn Marie Betzler worked on several movies throughout the ’80s and ’90s. On her first feature, 1985’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, she was credited by her full birth name, but as her screen acting career went on she would take credit as either Geri Betzler or Zoe Trilling – and it’s that second name that most fans seem to know her by. Among her credits are episodes of Guiding Light, 21 Jump Street, and Married… with Children, and the films Amityville Horror: The Evil Escapes, They Came from Outer Space, The Borrower, Dr. Giggles, Night Terrors, Hellbound, and Leprechaun 3 – but her most popular role may be in the 1994 horror comedy Night of the Demons 2, where she stole the show as bad girl Shirley Finnerty. Sadly, just as Night of the Demons 2 is reaching Blu-ray courtesy of Scream Factory, it has been confirmed that Betzler / Trilling passed away...

The trope of cursed objects is a unique corner of horror. Not to be confused with killer dolls and mannequins (that's a whole other niche), we're talking about your ordinary household objects come to life to wreck people's lives (and sometimes murder them) in the most bonkers, off-the-wall, and outrageous ways. Perhaps a comet or asteroid crashes into earth, causing a strange transference of energy, or an experiment goes horribly wrong. Sometimes, it's a phenomenon with no logical explanation, so it's even more difficult to defeat.
Cursed and killer objects in the movies ebb and flow with time. The 1970s and '80s were a particularly hot time for the subgenre, featuring a slew of deadly inanimate objects like a killer bed (more on that later), a killer car ("Christine"), a killer elevator ("The Lift"), and a killer lamp ("Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes"). Cursed objects were less prevalent in the '90s,...

Showing as part of this year’s Fantasia Midnights program, Synapse Films premiered their restoration of writer/director Jeff Lieberman’s cult favorite Blue Sunshine. The 1977 film about former hippies suffering from homicidal acid flashbacks will be getting a 4K release at an undisclosed future date, and the image quality is noticeably better than on my DVD. But, what about the actual film? Glad you asked…
Blue Sunshine begins at a party where one of the guests is doing an impersonation of Rodan. “The artist?” asks one of the guests. “No, the monster” But a real monster is about to show up as Frannie loses his wig and his mind and begins shoving guests into the fireplace.

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” actor Aron Eisenberg, who played Nog in the 1990s series, died Saturday. He was 50.
His character Nog, who appeared for all seven seasons, was a member of the alien race Ferengi, and joined Starfleet after a recommendation from Captain Sisko. Eisenberg returned for a guest spot on “Star Trek: Voyager” and appeared in the “Star Trek” fan film “Renegades.”
His widow Malissa Longo wrote on Facebook, “He was so driven to put the best he had into whatever work was put before him. He lived his life with such vigor and passion.”
Eisenberg, who was born with one kidney, had received two kidney transplants. The kidney trouble had stunted his growth, and he stood at 5 feet tall.
He had been married for nine months. “We didn’t officially announce that we had eloped on December 28th, 2018. We were hoping to have a big shindig in celebration of our nuptials,...

Boy howdy, there sure are a lot of Amityville flicks, aren’t there? I don’t know what kind of sadistic contest they’re in with the Witchcraft series, but I’m assuming regardless of the outcome, we the viewer loses. To each their own (I’ve never even seen the Witchcraft films), but I think it’s safe to say at this point in time that the word “Amityville” has lost all meaning far beyond its original IP. But there was a time, long ago when I had more hair and less belly, that the original Amityville series was an ongoing concern.
The ’79 original was a massive hit in theatres, the allegedly true book it was based on was still selling like hotcakes, the ’82 sequel scrapped mostly everything for Italian based lunacy (which was a blessing because it is easily the best one), and ‘83s 3D romp was laughable,...

It always comes back to this. As far as I can remember watching horror, there was always this kind of film showing on TV: ordinary folk, exposure to something awful (usually nuclear in nature), and then ensuing chaos. Of course I’m talking about the ‘50s and the Atomic Age of Horror, and starting with the title, 1977’s The Incredible Melting Man is intent on paying homage to them. Intent is a helluva word; full of optimism and purpose, it suggests a clear vision to be followed through. However, if it had been, we wouldn’t be left with this hilarious and heartfelt curiosity.

Before she was one of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or ruling daytime soaps on The Young and the Restless and Days of our Lives, Eileen Davidson starred as a sexy sorority sister with a sinister secret. From random films with altered names to unrelated storylines, we take a look at 15 incredibly tenuous horror and sci-fi film sequels...
The profit-driven nature of filmmaking usually means that, if a movie's a hit, sequels follow. And it's sometimes the case that, particularly in the realm of low-budget sci-fi and horror, those sequels are trotted out in a rush, or don't have anything to do with the film they're following.
This isn't to say that the sequels on this list are necessarily bad - it's a proper mixed bag of the great, the mediocre and the downright awful - but in each instance, these sequels have only vague links to their predecessors, or worse still, they're entirely different films rebranded to fit an existing franchise.
Our list is by no means definitive - rather, we've chosen a collection of films that we find the most memorable.

In 1975, when Daniel was 10, his family lived there for just 28 days before fleeing in terror, the victims of widespread supernatural happenings that pushed them to the brink of madness and had them fearing for their lives. A media circus began that never fully ended.
Up until their recent deaths, his parents George and Kathy Lutz, never went back on a single claim. In the 35 years since the ordeal, Daniel has never spoken on the record about his experiences. Thanks to that crazy haunted house house that resides in Amityville, N.Y. we've seen ten films based on the house, and now this latest addition to the Amityville collection that will supposedly be the "first time ever that the true prequel to the Amityville horror will be told.”

A few days ago, we reported that Hannibal Classics was developing a new "Amityville Horror" film, based on John G Jones' "Amityville: The Evil Escapes" book with plans to begin filming this fall for an October 2012 release. And now comes word that Dimension Films and Miramax will begin production on "The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes," as part of a bigger plan to create sequels to some of Miramax's best-known properties. The film will be in the found footage-style and will take place after the original "The Amityville Horror" film. Casey La Scala and Daniel Farrands are directing from their own script. Shooting will begin this summer for a January 27th, 2012 release. Jason Blum (Insidious, Paranormal Activity) is producing. Plot: An ambitious female television news intern, on the verge of breaking the most famous haunted house case in the world, leads a team of journalists, clergymen and paranormal researchers...

Thinkin' they won't? Goddammit, they will. Following eight original instalments and a 2005 remake with Ryan Reynolds, Hannibal Classics have just announced yet another Amityville Horror, this time in the form of The Amityville Legacy 3D.This one stems from the novel Amityville: The Evil Escapes by John G Jones, who wrote a number of continuations following Jay Anson's franchise-founding original book. It's already been the basis for two other films in the series, the TV movie The Evil Escapes, and 1992's Dtv It's About Time.Thankfully, we can rest assured that Legacy will not revolve around a possessed lamp, with Hannibal's lengthy (and spoilerific) synopsis describing six priests performing a traumatic exorcism, before the story flashes forward thirty years, and the unsuspecting Evans family move in to the house on the hill (y'all). You can probably infer the rest."The Amityville Legacy 3D reinvigorates a classic franchise with astonishing scares,...

A spin-off to 1979's film "The Amityville Horror" is in development. Hannibal Classics has announced that they are currently developing "Amityville: The Legacy 3D", a big screen version of John G. Jones' novel "Amityville: The Evil Escapes".
The horror movie will be produced by Richard Rionda Del Castro and Paul Mason, who co-produced 2005's "The Amityville Horror", a remake to the original film of the same title. Steve B. Harris will join Del Castro and Mason as producer, in addition to serving as the scribe along with Andrew Helm. The production is expected to start this fall to meet the 2012 release schedule.
The plot detail, issued in a press release via Hannibal Classics' official site, says that the story opens with six priests coming into an abandoned house. Unfortunately, Father Kibbler, the youngest priest, is attacked by an unseen demon after he followed a sound into the attic.

Hannibal Classics is moving forward with "Amityville: The Legacy 3D", a new horror feature based on the haunted house franchise.
Unlike the 2005 remake starring Ryan Reynolds, this will Not be a new version of the story in the original Jay Anson 1997 novel "The Amityville Horror" or its famous 1979 film adaptation.
Instead, Steve B. Harris and Andrew Helm are adapting the script based on John G. Jones' 1988 novel 'Amityville: The Evil Escapes', the fourth book in the series. A lot of the elements of the book were adapted for the screen before - in 1989's "Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes" and 1992's "Amityville: It's About Time".
The storyline follows Nancy and Michael Evans, a couple touched by a family tragedy when Nancy's sister Carolyn committed suicide, leaving them to look after her kids. Moving into Carolyn's suburban home to fix it up and then sell it, Nancy begins to sense an evil presence,...

The original film freaked me out. I have never seen the 2005 Ryan Reynolds-starring remake, but have heard good things. I have a feeling that every classic horror film will get the remake/reboot treatment in 3D. I personally wish they would come up with new films, but this may turn out to be interesting.
What are your thoughts on this news?...

Fans of The Amityville Horror may be frustrated that additional chapters in the saga have been stalled for some time now by legal issues. Apparently the rights are divided among different parties. But news just broke that Hannibal Classics is moving forward with a sequel based on Amityville: The Evil Escapes by John G. Jones. The book has served as inspiration for past Amityville sequels, and now looks like it will do the same for Amityville: The Legacy 3D. More after the jump. Our friends at Shock till You Drop just reported this news, which broke on the Hannibal Classics website. The film is set to start shooting in September for an October 2012 release. The Amityville Horror, for better or for worse, is one of the single most famous ghost stories of our lifetime, and it's for that very reason that filmmakers keep going to the well to try and make a good movie surrounding the perplexing mythos surrounding the case.
With several new projects bearing the Amityville moniker in various states of production, it's getting harder and harder to weed out which ones we're most excited for.
Another new one has popped up at Cannes - Amityville: The Legacy 3D which is based upon Amityville: The Evil Escapes (which was also the title of the crappy 1989 made-for-tv movie) by John G. Jones.
Hannibal Classics is the company behind this latest project; however, adding to the mystery of the Amityville canon, it's unclear as of yet whether or not Hannibal has secured the rights to make an Amityville film so we wouldn't count on...

All of these competing Amityville Horror projects have me extremely confused. From what I understand, there are rights to the book and rights to the actual story as told by George Lutz. Therefore, it's hard for me to understand who actually controls these rights, especially since there's already The Amityville Tapes stuck at MGM and the documentary My Amityville Horror in production. Adding to that list is Hannibal Classics' Amityville: The Legacy 3D, which is a feature film based on the book "Amityville: The Evil Escapes" (also the title of the 1989 made-for-tv movie) by John G. Jones. My guess is Hannibal owns the rights to this book specifically? Adapted by Andrew Helm and Steve B. Harris, the film is said to be going into production this coming September, even though a director has yet to be attached.

Welcome to our new weekly column Hot Babe of the Week! I had planned to make the lamp from Amityville: The Evil Escapes our first honoree, but changed my mind because I didn't want to blow our load early. The honor of being our first Hot Babe of the Week goes to Audrina Patridge's Breasts. Why? Because I already had these pictures of her saved on my computer (don't ask), she was in Sorority Row and we have nude pictures of her here. Maybe the lamp was a better choice... Well there is always next week!
