His career is a testament to the pervasive appeal of ghazal, for Pankaj Udhas, among the foremost who brought the perceived elitist genre of music into the popular sphere, hailed well beyond its prime catchment area, but mastered the form with dedication and performed it with panache.
Pankaj Udhas, who passed away on Monday aged 72, is usually – and erroneously – seen as a purveyor of the ghazal’s “maikhana” tradition.
This is chiefly due to his famous renditions of “Mujhko yaaron muaaf karna, main nashe mein hoon”, “Thodi thodi piya karo”,”Sharab cheez hi aisi”, “Ek taraf us ka ghai ek taraf maikada”, “Sabko maloom hai main sharabi nahi” and several other vintage melodies, but there was more range to his velvet-rounded voice.

Decades ago when Mani Ratnam's Nayakan had released, it had showcased Kamal Haasan in a different avatar altogether. Story of a simple boy who turned into a gang-lord, it also inspired Vinod Khanna to come up with a remake Dayavan. Though ever since then quite a few films across different languages have tried to recreate the same magic, director Anand Kumar strongly believes that at least from the characterisation perspective, if not the entire film, Vivek Oberoi's part of Dhramveer Gurjar comes close to Nayakan. When talking about intimacy and Indian cinema Madhuri Dixit is not a name that first comes to mind but it seems the fan favorite has no reservations about shooting intimate scenes for Dedh Ishqiya. Madhuri will begin to shoot for her role along side Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin Shah in September. While the actors and director Abhishek Chaubey are preparing for the project it is plenty time for fans to ask the question what will this new character be like?
Dedh Ishqiya is of course the hotly anticipated sequel to Ishqiya in which Vidya Balan played the powerful role of Krishna. Despite the film doing well at the box office and Vidya receiving awards for her performance, it was the fiery kiss that she shared with Arshad Warsi’s character that became to topic of discussion across discussion forms. Given the impact of the first film Madhuri has a lot...

In one of Feroz Khan’s last interviews, just before he passed away, he shared that one of his greatest pains was that he was never able to make a hit film for his son Fardeen. Neither was Feroz able to repeat the success of his earlier blockbusters such as ‘Janbaaz’, ‘Dayavan’ or indeed 1980 hit ‘Qurbani’, in the later part of his directorial career.
His last wish was remaking Qurbani as ‘Kurbani’ with son Fardeen playing his role he originally had and there were talks of Saif Ali Khan enacting Vinod Khanna’s role. Feroz had even make a public announcement at the 2006 Iifa Awards in Dubai and a couple of songs were subsequently recorded as part of the pre-production. Qurbani was the biggest hit of 1980, its songs were popular and the movie sold the most number of records and tapes in that year.
