Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood is one of the more divisive entries of the long running franchise. Fans have always praised its depiction of Jason, with his weathered, rotted appearance and for Kane Hodder donning the mask for the very first time, but have criticized its more fantasy-based story direction and the fact that the exquisite gore sequences were so drastically cut by the MPAA that they practically neutered the movie. I think there’s some weight to these arguments, but I also think that many fans tend to criticize The New Blood for not being what they wanted it to be rather than enjoying it for what it is, partly because what it actually became is spectacularly out-of-left field and unexpected for what began as a straight-to-the-point summer camp slasher. Not even a decade after the original’s release, here comes Friday the 13th Part VII...

Remember the shelves of your local video store? Of course you do. Announced today, Arrow Video is tapping back into that nostalgic experience with a brand new Blu-ray release.
“Freshly restored for the digital era with a wealth of new and archival extras, these films have never looked better,” Arrow Video teases the set this morning, which is loaded with a collection of retro films from Charles Band’s Empire International Pictures.
Arrow explains, “In 1983, entrepreneurial producer and director Charles Band founded Empire International Pictures, which would go on to make some of the most memorable and beloved genre movies of the 1980s. Empire became a mainstay of video stores across the world with their catchy titles, outlandish art and Band’s wholehearted belief in giving audiences a good time.”
In The Dungeonmaster, computer programmer Paul Bradford is sucked into a fantasy world by Mestema, a demonic sorcerer in search of a worthy opponent.

Long before Robin Williams portrayed everyone's favorite nanny in "Mrs. Doubtfire" or the Genie with a thousand voices, he was Mork from Ork. First introduced on "Happy Days," Mork was an eccentric alien from the planet Ork, who was sent to Earth to learn about primitive civilizations. This was the perfect platform for Robin Williams to show off his unbelievable talent on riffing on just about anything -- pop culture, politics, and pretty much every other subject you can imagine.
The premise of an alien invading the idyllic times of "Happy Days" sounds nuts, but the audience loved it. After...

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

Long live Empire Pictures; sure, they shone briefly in the ‘80s before bankruptcy and a rebirth as Full Moon, but there was some real talent and joy in a lot of those films – case in point: Cellar Dweller (1988), a straight up monster movie with no pretense beyond gore and gratuitous nudity in a tidy 78 minute package.
Take out the credits and you’re left with around 70 minutes; certainly not unusual in Band’s world, as a lot of the films he turned out were done on the cheap and very quickly. But occasionally a real talent would stop by (Stuart Gordon comes to mind) and stretch the limited resources into something worth a look or two. Enter John Carl Buechler, the late, lamented, legendary fx artist and burgeoning director (Troll) who, in pure Band style, had to film this in 10 days with very little money and a severely truncated schedule.

Fancy some horror? We've been taking a look at the discs of Ghoulies, The Burning, Psychomania and more...
“Have you ever heard a frog scream?”, the tag-line to George McCowan’s 1972 ecological horror Frogs (out now on Arrow Blu-ray) should have read. Indeed, for any of you readers that have ever been rudely awoken at 2am by the sound of a traumatised frog being gifted to you by your pet cat/furry psychopath, an amphibian cry of terror is probably the second worst sound there is (behind, of course, Kaiser Chiefs).

In their ongoing quest to bring most of Charles Band’s Empire Films from the ’80s to Blu-ray, Scream Factory is releasing another double feature containing two of the studio’s better efforts: 1984’s The Dungeonmaster (aka Ragewar) and Eliminators from 1986.
Though omnipresent in the horror genre since Dead of Night in 1945 (or even Waxworks in 1924 if you’re willing to count it), the anthology film has rarely extended into the realm of sci-fi or fantasy—Heavy Metal aside, of course. One of the rare exceptions is The Dungeonmaster, an anthology that assembles the all-star team of Empire Pictures in the mid-’80s: Charles Band, John Carl Buechler, Dave Allen, Ted Nicolaou, Pater Manoogian and several others.
Originally intended as a single story that was expanded by necessity into an anthology, The Dungeonmaster follows computer programmer Paul Bradford (Jeffrey Byron, star of Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn), inventor of a...

One of the great things about the horror genre is just how varied it can be. There’s room for all kinds of movies under the massive umbrella of horror: comedies, drama, FX-heavy gore fests, psychological thrillers that suggest but never show and so on and so on. Because there’s no one “right” way to make a horror film, fans get to have completely different experiences with each new effort — this despite the genre’s reputation for sameness and predilection for sequels.
There’s starting to be a trend with these Scream Factory double feature Blu-rays in which one of the two movies included is crazy over-the-top fun and the second is a slog. The last few months have seen double feature releases of Empire of the Ants (fun!) and Jaws of Satan (dull!), Food of the Gods (fun!) and Frogs (dull!) and, even more recently, Cellar Dweller (fun!

★★★☆☆ In the varied annals of horror cinema history, attics and basements operate as spaces ripe for psychoanalysis. When not serving as metaphors for ills of the human mind, they function as focal points for demonic manifestations, and sometimes portals to other dimensions. Kitchens aren't scary, right? Parlours are only creepy if the house is grandly built and furnished and there is a piano going all Jerry-Lee Lewis of its own accord. Dining areas, pantries and garden sheds are rarely, if at all, used to stage sequences drenched in supernatural terror. It Came from the Pantry! (an invented title, admittedly) doesn't boast the same attention-grabbing promise as Cellar Dweller (1988) or The Attic (2007).

Having issued definitive collector’s editions of a number of high-profile horror classics of the ’80s and ’90s, Scream Factory often turns to smaller and more obscure titles to remind fans of some of the gems that once lined video store shelves. Lately they’ve been killing it with HD releases of Charles Band’s old Empire Pictures titles, several of which are appearing on home video for the first time since VHS (like their recent release of Ghost Town, for example). While both Cellar Dweller and Catacombs got a DVD release in 2013 as part of an “All Night Horror Marathon” four-film collection (the DVD debut of both movies), this new double feature Blu-ray is the first time either can be seen in high-def.

July 14th may not have a lot of genre-related titles arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, but the films making their home entertainment debuts this week are a rather stellar bunch nonetheless. For anyone who may have missed two of the best indie films this year in theaters—Ex Machina and It Follows—you’ll have a chance to catch up with both this coming Tuesday.

101 Films is bringing this 80s monster movie to DVD - but does it stand up to modern eyes?
Let's start with an overview. Artist Colin Childress (Jeffrey Combs, in an all too brief cameo) comes face to face with his own creation, a monster that he draws for his comic Cellar Dweller, and burns to death, but not before he sends it back to the netherworld.
Some years later, his home has been converted into an art school and a new, young and impressionable artist decides to update the Cellar Dweller comic book with horrific results as the power of the beast threatens to consume her. Can anything stop the Cellar Dweller as it goes on a murderous rampage seemingly guided by the artistic hands of Whitney?
The film has a rather smart opening sequence, showing Colin realising that his creation has been brought to life and banishing it from reality,...

A monster B-movie from the late 80’s that many people won’t have heard of and many other people will have completely forgotten about, Cellar Dweller is one of those unusual little movies that gets buried beneath a stack of similar titles and only really has a chance to be woken up again if a company decides to pick up the rights and release it. 101 Films, here in the UK, did just that, and so 2014 finally saw a DVD release of the film.

Wow. Just a month in and this regular post dedicated to the - shall we say - more idiosyncratic, less delicate of movies (or shall we just say “gory horrors and not-quite-b-movies”) has the splendid fortune of getting to review Stuart Gordon’s tongue-in-cheek classic, Re-Animator.
Produced by Brian Yuzna, the warped individual behind the brutal class satire/mutant cannibalism jaunt Society, and starring that rubber-faced icon of the midnight movie, Jeffrey Combs, this remains one of the crowning glories of 80s cult film-making. Re-Animator's essentially an outlandish, sillier take on Hp Lovecraft’s spin on the Frankenstein mad-scientist story, and Combs, who you’ll undoubtedly know from such box-office juggernauts as Doctor Mordrid and Cellar Dweller (reviewed here next month), plays brilliant-if-misguided medical student Herbert West.

The first All Night Horror Marathon was pretty damn fun. What’s the Matter With Helen, The Outing, The Vagrant and The Godsend were on the bill, and I was shocked to find that there were still older horror classics that I could fall in love with in much the same way as some of the B favorites with which I became enamored as a kid. The Outing and The Godsend are must see movies focusing on schlock and kid horror respectively. With Volume 2 of the same series from Scream Factory there’s an added bonus; we get to enjoy Empire era horror from the 80’s and early 90’s. This collection features The Dungeonmaster, Cellar Dweller, Contamination .7 and Catacombs. Let’s talk about why you absolutely must pick this quad-horror built for sleepovers is the perfect (and cheap) pick up. We’ll talk about each one briefly in a review...

La Notte (Criterion Collection) I just posted my review of Criterion's new release of Michelangelo Antonioni's La Notte, and as a fan of his work I can tell you this may be my favorite film of his. Perhaps that's only because it's the first of his movies I've watched a second time and not having seen L'Eclisse or The Passenger there are still likely candidates to rise in the ranks. I would like to say this is his most accessible film I've seen, even though it comes with an extraordinarily slow pace. I'm sure others would argue Blow-Up may be more accessible, but I almost suspect the more thrilling aspects of that feature may be lost on a crowd more interested in CG explosions and men in tights. Either way, this story of a married couple and their deteriorating relationship is one that gets better and better as the minutes tick by.

Who better to lead a veteran cast that includes The Highlander, 30 Days of Night hero Eben Oleson and a Canadian scream queen than John Carl Buechler, the man who helmed Friday the 13th Part 7: The New Blood, Troll and Cellar Dweller?
The director and special effects wizard returns to the captain's chair after a five-year hiatus from directing to oversee the upcoming Dark Star Hollow, a film about a man who makes a deal with the devil to save the life of his wife.
From the Press Release
While best known for directing part 7 in the Friday the 13th series, Buechler's special make-up effects and other works are well known in films like Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Halloween 4 and Trancers. He is also working on a remake of his classic film, Troll, from 1986.

Well, At Least I Won't Get Called Poncy Again. I Hope....
As you read this week's column, I'll already be attending the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour down in Pasadena, California. And before I've attended a single panel, I can already pretty much guarantee this is going to be one of the weaker (gay) tours in memory. For starters, CBS hasn't given us a single screener for their two new shows (which sound utterly conventional and appear to be gay free. Shock!) and even ABC which is reliably gay-friendly, doesn't have anything that looks terribly promising.
Honestly, Starz looks to be the best bet between Spartacus: Gods of the Arena and Torchwood, but since for some reason, Russell T Davies won't be available for me to interview during the TCA, even that won't take up quite as much as my time. Fortunately, Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight is available...
