Summer is over (apparently? Who knows anymore), but that doesn’t mean I stop watching films that celebrate the outdoors in all their majestic beauty. Of course, slaughter is essential, so today we’ll look at Edge of the Axe (1988), a very late entry in the slasher sweepstakes that sets itself apart by being an all Spanish filmed and made production, with an American cast. The results are as you’d expect – one part slasher, one part giallo, all parts joyful madness.
Released on its native soil in mid-September, with a video rollout worldwide the following year, Edge of the Axe did itself no favors with humdrum box art, a lackluster title and a waning market for masked mayhem makers. But the film is definitely a “don’t judge a book by its cover” piece, as there’s just enough weirdness to satisfy those looking to sharpen their blades.

Arrow Video continues to reconstitute the filmography of Spanish genre filmmaker Jose Ramon Larraz with his final English language thriller, Deadly Manor (originally released on VHS as Savage Lust), the final in a triptych of slasher films set in the Us (but filmed in Spain) in the late 1980s to early 1990s. Following on the heels of the label’s glorious box set of his earlier works, plus his 1988 title Edge of the Axe (released under his pseudonym Joseph Braunstein), this final thriller from the underrated director is decidedly dull and derivative affair, borrowing heavily from a variety of classics, everything from The Old Dark House (1932) to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974).…...

February’s home media releases are ending in a big way, with 20 different horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto various formats this week. Leading the pack this Tuesday are Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, which comes home on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD, as well as Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space, which will be available on both Blu and DVD. Scream Factory is showing Mary Lambert’s Pet Sematary Two some love this week with their Collector’s Edition release, and for those of you into wacky, obscure cult classics, you’ll definitely want to pick up Vinegar Syndrome’s Blu-ray for Spookies.
Arrow Video is keeping busy with their Special Edition releases of Deadly Manor and the One Missed Call trilogy, and Severin Films has given James Glickenhaus’ The Astrologer an HD overhaul this week, too.
Other notable releases for February 25th include The Candy Snatchers,...

To celebrate the release of Deadly Manor - available on Blu-ray 17th February from Arrow Video – we have a copy up for grabs!
An old, dark house… A maniac on the loose… An orgy of bloodlust! All the hallmarks of late master of Spanish macabre José Ramón Larraz are present and correct in 1990’s Deadly Manor – the final horror movie from one of the genre’s most unheralded filmmakers.
Whilst en route to a lake, a group of youngsters make an unscheduled stop-off at a remote, seemingly abandoned mansion where they plan to spend the night. But the property is full of foreboding signs – a blood-stained car wreck in the garden, coffins in the basement, scalps in the closet, and photographs of a beautiful but mysterious woman adorning every corner of the house. Before daybreak, the group will unwittingly uncover the strange and terrifying truth that lurks behind the walls of this dreadful place.

January’s home media releases are ending on a high note, as there are a bunch of great titles headed to Blu-ray and DVD this week. My very favorite film of 2019, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is making its debut on both formats, and if you missed it in theaters last year, Terminator: Dark Fate is hitting multiple formats as well.
For those of you who dig totally bananapants filmmaking, Tammy and the T-Rex is being released this week courtesy of Vinegar Syndrome. Vs is also keeping busy with Berserker, Beyond the Door 3, and Unmasked Part 25, and Scream Factory is bringing home Body Parts, Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, as well as a Steelbook Edition of The Slumber Party Massacre, too.
Arrow Video has put together a special edition release of Edge of the Axe, and the Warner Archive Collection is showing some love to the criminally underseen Two on a Guillotine.

To celebrate the release of Edge of the Axe – available on Blu-ray 27th January from Arrow Video – we have a copy up for grabs!
From cult Spanish filmmaker José Ramón Larraz comes this long-neglected late 80s slasher classic, finally unleashed on Blu-ray for the first time ever!
The rural community of Paddock County is being rocked by the crazed exploits of an axe-wielding psychopath, who stalks the night in a black trenchcoat and mask. As the victims pile up, the authorities attempt to keep a lid on the situation, whilst computer whizz-kid Gerald and girlfriend Lillian seek to unmask the killer before the town population reaches zero. Nominally set in Northern California but shot primarily in Madrid, giving the film an off-kilter, American/European atmosphere akin to the likes of Pieces, Edge of the Axe is a late entry hack-and-slash masterpiece from one of the titans of Spanish terror.

January may be a light month in terms of quantity for genre home video giant Arrow Video, but they are more than making up for it with quality. A pair of horrific releases on Blu-ray are sure to hit the spot. Rob Grant's festival favorite blackest-of-the-black comedy, Harpoon makes landfall in the UK in a special edition that is to die for. Hitting shelves in both the North America and the UK is Spanish horror specialist Jose Ramon Larraz's late '80s slasher, Edge of the Axe, a film announced ages ago, just now getting its formal release date. Check out the details for both in the gallery below...
