Finding the ideal actress to play in his new project proves difficult for Paul, a director, who is seen going through the process of finding the right person for the role. When all seems lost, he meets an intense young man, Jean, who wants to help. For that purpose Jean goes to Chioggia, near Venice, where the mysterious Dara lives.
What Jean has to endure in order to convince Dara to agree to take the part, takes a lot out of him. Jean ends up falling in love for Dara. Her ambition has been to see her father, Ray, again. The problem is that Ray lives in New York, and money is needed, so Jean sells Paul car in order to buy the airline tickets. Once there, Dara finds a man that has settled in America because he is his own boss there. Paul, who comes to New York looking for Dara and Jean, finds himself wondering what made him get involved.
We have admired Swiss director Alain Tanner's work. This film though is not as involving as the ones that precede it, or the ones that come after. The story which Mr. Tanner wrote, goes in too many directions and one doesn't get to care too much for the characters in the story. Jean-Louis Trintignant plays Paul, the director, who could be Mr. Tanner's alter ego, for all we know. Jacob Berger, a director himself, plays Paul with conviction. The beautiful Laura Morante appears as Dara. Raymond Serra and Jane Holzer are also featured.
