Whereas splatter movies wield gore and carnage like a weapon to evoke a visceral response, splatter comedies push the onscreen violence and gore into outlandish territory for the sake of a hearty laugh. Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi, for example, began their filmmaking careers defining the modern splatter comedy with their early works, pushing the boundaries of taste, horror, and humor through cartoonish bloodletting.
This week brings the arrival of a new splatter-comedy, Destroy All Neighbors, presenting the perfect excuse to laugh your way through the excess entrails and arterial spray the niche subgenre has to offer. These five splatter comedies vary in style and tone, but all seek to tickle your funny bone through humor, fun, and a whole lot of guts.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

We toe the line sometimes here at JoBlo Horror Originals with what movies we discuss. Some things can qualify for multiple shows like a Black Sheep or a Deconstructing on the same movie. Sometimes there are enough behind the scenes shenanigans to give it a proper Wtf or maybe its adapted from a story. Not today, though. Today is something that reflects the true nature of this show. I know some viewers get bummed when they see some movies, even some of their favorite movies, get covered multiple times, so today’s hopefully different. Variety has broken the news that the 1987 cult classic horror comedy Street Trash (buy it Here) is getting a remake from Ryan Kruger, the director of the 2020 body horror film Fried Barry! Production is already underway on the remake, which moves the story from Brooklyn to South Africa, and Cineverse has acquired the North American distribution rights. They’re planning to release the film through the Screambox streaming service sometime in 2024.
The original Street Trash was directed by J. Michael Muro from a screenplay by Roy Frumkes. Thirteen years ago, Frumkes said he was working on the script for Street Trash 2… but that sequel never made it into production. Thankfully, Muro and Frumkes are both involved with the remake. They’re executive producing it alongside Bad Dragon and Vinegar Syndrome.

Production is currently underway in various locations around Cape Town, South Africa for the film that is shot entirely on 35mm. The news was first reported by Variety.
Cineverse plans to release the film as a Screambox Original in early 2024.
From director Ryan Kruger, whose first independent feature Fried Barry played dozens of film festivals worldwide, Street Trash follows a group of homeless misfits as they fight for survival when they discover a plot to exterminate every homeless person in the city.
“Our reimagining of Street Trash takes place in Cape Town, South Africa where the growing divide between rich and poor has changed the world as we know it,” says Kruger. “I was a huge fan of the original Street Trash when I was a kid,...

Cineverse has acquired all North American rights to the reboot of the 1987 horror-comedy “Street Trash.” The reboot of the cult classic is helmed by “Fried Barry” director Ryan Kruger.
Over three decades after the slimy and grimy film’s debut, Kruger is moving this horror story out of Brooklyn and into a whole new continent with an even more potent message. “Our reimagining of Street Trash takes place in Cape Town, South Africa where the growing divide between rich and poor has changed the world as we know it,” said Kruger in a statement. “I was a huge fan of the original ‘Street Trash’ when I was a kid, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to introduce a whole new generation to the melted gonzo goodness that made the original such a classic.”

Following up the fantastically frightening Host was never going to be a walk in the park for writer/director Rob Savage and writer/producers Gemma Hurley and Jed Shepherd, but the trio have thankfully smashed it with the dazzlingly demented Dashcam.
With scale, production and (presumably) budget enhanced, and clout bolstered by Blumhouse, Dashcam retains the faux “found footage” online vibe that worked so well with its predecessor, yet this is more sprawling and adventurous, despite, like Host, being produced during the pandemic, with crew and fictional characters operating under Covid restrictions.
The story introduces us to grating anti-vax vlogger Annie Hardy (Annie Hardy) who livestreams a journey to the UK from America as part of her improvised driving/music show BandCar. Upon arrival, Annie meets ex-band mate/musical collaborator “Stretch” (Amar Chadha-Patel) who has since settled down, got married and found a job delivering food.

Emergence from pandemic lockdowns and the promise of in-person festivals has excitement brewing for the future of film, and the genre industry is no exception. The official selection of the 2022 Frontières Platform at the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes is in, and it displays bullish trends for the future of genre.
“There’s a lot of horror, and it kind of goes back to practical effects, and I love that,” says Frontières executive director Annick Mahnert. “Practical effects are coming back, which is great.”
Highlighting this trend is potential standout “Gnomes!” from the Netherlands, a horror film about gnomes who murder curious humans and turn them into sausage while they’re still alive. The film boasts producer and art department master Richard Raaphorst (“Frankenstein’s Army”), who brought the gnomes to life.
Other possible standouts of practical effects are “Requiem for a Robot, “Street Trash” and “Serial Kitten,” which blends costumes and CGI.

Originally shot in 2012 as a thesis project at the School of Visual Arts, professor Roy Frumkes is the film’s executive producer, Animosity had a festival run that included Fantasia and the Boston SciFi Film Festival. But after a small release it quickly faded into obscurity. Then writer/director Brendan Steere had an unexpected, and unlikely, hit with The VelociPastor.
Never one to pass up a quick cash in, Wild Eye Releasing has now dusted Animosity off and scheduled it for re-release. Is it one of their better finds, or just another student film that should stay forgotten?

Friday night Twilight Zone reruns, Saturday afternoon Frankenstein matinees, and Sunday morning Godzilla flicks; these were the films that introduced my lifelong love affair with horror films. My parents were the influencers, the ones that nurtured my fascinations with the fantastic, weird, and wonderful world of genre film. I was taught from them to respect the classics, the films of Hitchcock, the genius of Lon Chaney, and the storytelling of Sterling, but they also emphasized an understanding and study of the past. These guidelines have, and continue, to shape my thoughts and ideas about film.
But in 1988, the introduction to the sinister and suspenseful nature of horror was still fresh for a middle-schooler who couldn't get enough of watching scary movies in the dark with stove-top popcorn and Rc Cola. Growing up in a lower- to middle-class family with young siblings and hard-working parents didn’t leave a lot of...

The underappreciated ‘nature gone wild’ porn horror movie subgenre has a somewhat patchy history, with a viewer’s search more likely to end up in some SyFy channel Megapterranoshark Versus Crocosaur cul-de-sac than something of the calibre of a Jaws or Arachnophobia. 1987 was a wild year for horror and sci-fi cinema. We had an eclectic array of brilliant movies that spanned nearly every sub-genre you could imagine: classic monsters, vampires, slashers, supernatural, erotic thrillers, zombies, possession, cannibals, aliens, evil toys, cabin in the woods, anthological, or even indescribable horror (à la Street Trash). You name it, and there was probably a movie that came out during 1987 that would absolutely fit the bill. It was a banner year, and an amazing time to be a genre fan (for those of us old enough to have lived through it in real time).
In the spirit of last year’s “Class of 1986” celebration which we hosted right here on Daily Dead, for the next few weeks we’ll be running our “Class of 1987” series, which will pay tribute to a number of notable horror and sci-fi movies from 1987 with retrospectives, exclusive interviews, Corpse Club podcast episodes,...

So, what’s your personal idea of hell? For this writer, it would almost certainly involve being chained down in the audience of an eternal live filming of Loose Women as Donald Trump waves a slice of tiger bread, forever just out of reach. She stares at them with equal parts fascination and doe-in-headlights dread. It’s a concise visualization of the simple social commentary driving Bava the Younger’s trashterpiece diptych, Demons and Demons 2. The two make an excellent double feature of midnight flicks about the perils of daring to dip even passingly into the lower depths of subculture and the, well, demons that society risks releasing when willing to dabble in The Weird. [Guest authors Christopher Lombardo and Jeff Kirschner of Really Awful Movies take a look back at some of the most memorable slimy moments in the horror and sci-fi genres.] In Jean-Paul Sartre’s Being and Nothingness, the philosopher weighs in on the icky properties of slime: “…it sticks to me, it draws me, it sucks at me. Its mode of being is neither the reassuring inertia of the solid nor a dynamism…”
The author described “le visqueux” (viscosity) at length, and reportedly even stared at algae to experience the repulsive feelings associated with the title and theme of his dour novel Nausea.
When it comes to phobias, a fear of slime sits pretty low on the list. Who has even heard of blennophobia compared with more prevalent fears such as agora- or arachnophobia?
Perhaps because it’s one of those fears, like being scared of fire, that is so ubiquitous that it doesn’t really need a psychological condition or fancy verbiage attached to it. After all, it’s pretty rare to experience fire in your day-to-day life (as...

Beyond Fest must have their check in the mail, because ol' Jack Burton himself is coming to the festival for a 30th anniversary screening of Big Trouble in Little China. Filmmaker James Gunn will be on hand to discuss the cult John Carpenter movie with the beloved actor, and that's only one of many events fans will want to mark on their fall calendars.
Taking place September 30th–October 11th at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, Beyond Fest 2016 will also feature screenings of Phantasm: Ravager, Phantasm: Remastered, George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead in 3-D, Martin, In a Valley of Violence, The Wolf Man (1941), The Bad Batch, Raw, and City of the Living Dead.
A 4K restoration screening of Romero's The Crazies will also take place, as well as a live performance by composer Fabio Frizzi and his orchestra during a showing of The Beyond: Composer's Cut.

I don’t believe in Karma. But there may be something to it. I’m sitting in my basement getting a whiff of my own shit while trying to write about a movie called Septic Man. Nothing like a good rain to get the sewer backed up. Ugh. Here’s hoping I can get power through this while holding my nose.

This third week of April has some exciting home entertainment offerings for us genre fans, including the special edition releases of two cult classics I adore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and The Stuff. An indie film I’ve been hearing about for a while now, Grimewave, also makes its way to DVD this Tuesday and while it may not be traditional horror, Oscar-winner The Revenant certainly has enough badassery contained within its cinematic frames to be worthy of mentioning this week, and it arrives on both Blu-ray and DVD on April 19th.
Other notable releases this week include Smothered (which features a ton of horror icons and was directed by John Schneider of Smallville and Dukes of Hazzard fame), 15 Till Midnight, Classroom 6, Ip Man 3, German Angst and She Wolf Rising.

Before we dive in to this week’s revoltin’ reviews, I’d like to call attention to a fright flick exploding (quite literally) onto yer TV screens from those diabolical dudes atNecrostorm titled The Mildew From Planet Xonader! Now I worked on this flick, and I am damn proud of the outcome, so I really want to give ya taste of what the whole shebang is all about!
Some of you more astute creeps may remember I’ve talked about this film here before, but now I’ve had the chance to lay my putrid peepers on it, and I can assure you it’s an ultra-gory good time (and not just because my alter-ego provides some vicious voices for the goings-on).
The story goes a lil’ somethin’ like this: deep within the bowels of a top-secret research facility, scientists have been conducting experiments with a rapid-spread mildew capable of...

Today on Blu-ray Artsploitation films is releasing Matt O.'s Bloody Knuckles. Bloody Knuckles is a bit of a left field choice from Artsploitation, who've made their name straddling the line between high-minded art films and genre films. This film, on the other hand, is more of an '80s style sleazefest. Lots of gooey practical effects a la Street Trash and the constant intent to offend at any cost are high on the Bloody Knuckles priority list. It's certainly a fun film, here's what Artsploitation has to say about it:Travis, an underground comic book artist with a penchant for obscene caricatures, upsets a Chinatown crime lord who responds by cutting off the young man's hand. As a despondent, drunken Travis wallows in post-severed hand depression, his...

There’s something magical about 1980’s horror movies that simply can’t be found in any film made before or since. On the outskirts of all the classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Shining there were your cheesy movies full of giant monsters, gross out special effects, and some of the most incomprehensible plots you’ll ever find on the big screen.
During this time, the genre began to see a shift back to the schlocky movies of the late 1950s like Attack of the Crab Monsters and Earth vs. The Spider. While the majority of horror films in the ’70s were rather serious, featuring realistic killers and reflecting anxiety over the Vietnam war, the ’80s were anything but. Filmmakers got back into making fun, intentionally goofy movies with Ash Williams killing zombies while spouting one liners, calling on you to turn off your...

Street Trash screens midnights this Friday and Saturday Night (August 7th and 8th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse
Vintage Vinyl, the used record store on the Loop in U City, is housed in the same building that used to be the Varsity Theater. The Varsity is where The Rocky Horror Picture Show played midnights to sold-out crowds throughout much of the ‘70s and -80s. The theater definitely catered to the cult and college crowd, presenting counterculture film programming, mostly for the students at nearby Washington University and for years was the only place in town to catch 3-D movies.

Special effects have come a long way in a very short amount of time, and that becomes especially obvious after taking a look at the two videos below. The first is a supercut of the worst special effects of all-time, highlighting scenes from Deep Blue Sea (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), King Kong (2005) and more. Funny thing is, I saw all three of those movies in theaters and it isn't until looking back at them in this video that I recognize how poor their effects are. Will there come a time where we do the same with today's filmsc The second video is yet another super cut, this one focused specifically on the ten worst practical effects of all-time. It contains a few honorable mentions in the form of the dam jump in The Fugitive (1993) and the bed scene in Howard the Duck (1986), among others, but here are the ten films that...

From anime to pitch-black thrillers, here's our pick of the underappreciated movies of 1987...
Sometimes, the challenge with these lists isn't just what to put in, but what to leave out. We loved Princess Bride, but with a decent showing at the box office and a huge cult following, isn't it a bit too popular to be described as underappreciated? Likewise Joe Dante's Innerspace, a fabulously geeky, comic reworking of the 60s sci-fi flick, Fantastic Voyage.
What we've gone for instead is a mix of genre fare, dramas and animated films that may have garnered a cult following since, but didn't do well either critically or financially at the time of release. Some of the movies on our list just about made their money back, but none made anything close to the sort of returns enjoyed by the likes of 1987's biggest films - Three Men And A Baby, Fatal Attraction...

From toilet-based scares to nasty encounters in the shower, here's a selection of 17 memorable moments of terror in the bathroom...
Nb: the following contains potential spoilers and scenes which may be considered Nsfw.

Intimacy may be the key to understanding why, in horror films, so many dreadful things tend to happen in bathrooms. The bathroom is often where we go to be by ourselves - either to answer the call of nature, brush our teeth, or simply relax in the bath after a hectic day at work. Equally, the water closet also sees us at our most vulnerable: naked, or at least with our trousers down, and...

Though he’s most well-known for revolutionizing the zombie genre with 1968’s Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero also filmed a unique take on vampires with 1977’s Martin. Following the titular character’s vampire-like serial killer streak in Pittsburgh, the movie features a memorable soundtrack that’s now being released on a limited edition vinyl with new artwork and liner notes:
Press Release - “February 2nd 2015, NYC, NY – Ship to Shore PhonoCo. announced today that the score from George A. Romero’s Martin, once named “one of the top 100 coolest soundtracks of all time” by Mojo Magazine, will be available on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978.
“Donald Rubinstein contributes a haunting, melancholy score punctuated with sudden, passionate riffs. It is the perfect accompaniment to this tale of lost souls in a barren, nearly post-apocalyptic environment.” – Roy Frumkes, producer of Street Trash and director of Document of the Dead.

When I wrote a review for Dtb about director Jason Bognacki’s 2014 Giallo inspired witchcraft film “Another” I said that the film was “poised to be a future-classic”. It turns out I wasn’t wrong. Since the film started screening in festivals worldwide, it has garnered many well-deserved accolades along the way. In fact the UK publication the Daily Record even included Another in their year end list of top-ten horror movies and presented an excellent point about the mesmerizing film while doing so saying that you “don’t expect” to like Another. Lunaris Records landed on our radar when it announced a Witchboard 7" soundtrack release along with some Night of the Demons goodies. Those are now available in the company's store here. Today, I'm here to tell you that Lunaris' soundtrack release of Street Trash is now up for pre-order.
You can buy it on CD, cassette or vinyl. I ran into a Lunaris rep at Comic-Con and he gave me a CD and, I have to say, I forgot how much fun this score is. The hilarious thing about their presentation is the score is occasionally broken up by the sounds of people melting. Good stuff!

It’s Friday the 13th and a full moon tonight so we let the crazies loose and are bring back one of our favorite staff posts, The Thirteen! If you aren’t familiar with The Thirteen, it was initially conceived to be a Top 13 list of films about a certain topic. Sadly, we started it last September and it fell by the wayside. Read our past two posts:
13 Songs Used in Films That Take On a Haunting Feeling
13 Female Villains & Anti-Heroes in Film
Xtro
contribution by Jeremy Jones
A young boy sees his dad abducted by some unseen force. Three years later a meteor hits in the middle of the woods and brings something icky. Written, directed and scored by Harry Bromley Davenport, Xtro is a demented labor of love. The first twenty minutes are the most chunk blowing worthy moments. Including perhaps the grossest thing ever, walking in on your parents having sex.
