In this week’s edition of Canon Of Film, we take a look at one of Spike Lee‘s underrated masterpiece, ‘25th Hour‘. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
’25th Hour‘ (2002)
Director: Spike Lee
Screenplay: David Benioff, based on his novel “The 25th Hour”
When Spike Lee’s ‘25th Hour,’ came out in 2002, it was ignored by most every award show, and made only a handful of top 10 lists. It was on my top ten list of that year, and I thought it was one of Lee’s absolute best; I’ve often called it his most underrated film. It’s a funny thing about movies, sometimes a film needs a certain amount of time to pass before people truly recognize its greatness, and time for those who were ahead of the curve to gloat a bit. Suddenly, at the end of the decade,...

We have seen things you people wouldn't believe. A cult classic have its reputation re-evaluated and restored by a series of fan-fueled screenings long after it was unceremoniously "retired" from a theatrical run. A film with no less than six different cuts in circulation. Critics declaring a sequel a masterpiece, while others say it's "stylish but hollow." The evolution of basic story elements being considered "spoilers." All of these moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain and unlike a legion of tweets bandied about in its name.

Robert Alexander, a 43-year-old 9/11 first responder, died on August 14 from a brain tumor doctors say was related to his work at Ground Zero. His death came just nine months after his firefighter father, Raymond Alexander, Sr., passed away after a 13-year fight with multiple cancers also believed to be linked to the attacks.
More than 3,700 first responders have been diagnosed with a collection of cancers tied to exposure to the carcinogens—such as jet fuel, mercury and 400 tons of asbestos—that were released into New York City’s air during the collapse of the towers. The Uniformed Firefighters Association said Robert and Raymond Sr.

As the Summer slowly dissolves into Fall, film goers have been regularly bombarded, on an almost weekly basis, with follow-ups and franchise entries. But here’s something unique, a documentary sequel (hey, the “s-word” is even in the title). Well, fairly unique considering the acclaimed Paradise Lost: The Child Murders At Robin Hood Hills inspired several follow-ups, spin-offs (West Of Memphis) and a docudrama. But this new film is rare in its original’s influence on the culture, becoming a fertile source of satire while actually making a splash at the box office, and later garnering not one, but two Academy Awards (Best Song and Best Documentary Feature…a double play). So ten years has passed since the original and former vice-president Al Gore is still fighting the good fight in An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth To Power.
Yes like the last film, Gore is the main focus, a true action...

When Injustice: Gods Among Us arrived on the scene several years ago, it not only astonished video game lovers with its Mortal Kombat inspired gameplay that came courtesy of NetherRealm Studios, but it also provided a fresh alternative to the usual Justice League stories one would expect to find in comics.
What perhaps nobody foresaw was the tie-in series set five years before the events of the first game being received so well that it spawned four follow-ups that completely filled in the blanks, and now said first game is currently receiving an adaptation of its own told from Harley Quinn’s point of view in the form of Injustice: Ground Zero. But, if you’re looking for a true breath of fresh air, you won’t want to miss the upcoming Injustice 2 series.

When the Twin Towers came down in the 9/11 attacks 15 years ago, Hillary Clinton was a junior senator from New York and Donald Trump was still a New York business mogul. Both Clinton and Trump - who are now the two major-party nominees for president - visited Ground Zero in the days following the terrorist attacks and responded to 9/11 and its immediate aftermath in very different ways. What a trip for Pope Francis! In just six days, the religious leader traveled throughout Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and New York City where he interacted with everyone from babies and the sick, to political leaders and celebrities. One familiar face who was able to meet Pope Francis not once but twice was chef Sandra Lee. Just days after declaring she was cancer-free, the Food Network star received blessings from the Pope both at a church service and at Ground Zero. "I was so amazed he remembered me from the night before and wanted so much to thank him for my blessing," she wrote on Facebook. "But before I could get a word out he ever so sweetly and with an instantly warm wide smile looking...

Bretagne, a 15-year-old retriever, is being honored for her work at Ground Zero.
Meet Bretagne (pronounced “Brittany”), a 15-year-old golden retriever who’s spent her life helping humans. And she’s finally getting honored for it: nominated for the American Human Association’s “Top Hero Dog” award.
Today, she is in the news because she is “believed to be the last surviving search dog who worked at the World Trade Center” on September 11. Bretagne and her owner, Denise Corliss of Cypress, Texas, appeared on Today and, 13 years later, revisited Ground Zero.

It’s always a challenge when a television show kills off a sizable portion of humanity in its first episodes. I don’t mean to be flip about that proposition—it’s just there’s a certain series format, seen most recently in The Leftovers, in which the action begins after a near-apocalyptic event has run its course and then the substance of the show deals with whatever follows.
Some do it better than others. In HBO’s case, that calamity comes through a rapture of sorts: Two percent of the world’s population disappears into thin air. What follows...

Shorts are in the air. Sundance has a Shorts Competition and Lucy Walker’s 15 minute doc is in it, The Lions Mouth Opens. She did that great Brazilian doc Wasteland about the artist whose community organizing in the city dump created the greatest works of art coming out of Brazil and maybe the world, today.
Also worth mentioning at Sundance is Love, Love, Love by Indian film student, Sandhya Daisy Sundaram. A part of an omnibus for the upcoming feature Cinetrain, a Chris Marker inspired series of shorts (in this one she is exploring Russian female stereotypes) in which selected filmmakers go in winter on a train from Moscow to the Far, Far East and get off at the towns between to pursue their theme, reboarding the train where they must edit the film in one month's time. Love, Love, Love's director Sandhya and I discussed women in Russia, in India and in the world at length and I highly recommend watching her film. Here is the entire Shorts Film Program of Sundance 2014.
Withoutabox just mentioned the Zero Film Festival for shorts, including student shorts. And it’s local, that is, it’s in L.A. I’d advise all my students at Woodbury and any other ones reading this, to submit and hang out and begin networking there as Ground Zero.
I am amazed at the numbers of shorts…it is a trend worth watching because frankly, the American indies are getting pretty boring. And we Americans have Really Short Attention Spans, so I think shorts is what we need. Thank you YouTube, on which btw, I saw the sweetest video this morning at the gym about cows who were released from bondage and go bounding in happiness, like little lambs or happy dogs, they go Bounding through the Green Fields of Freedom and you know how good they feel!

Exclusive: Animal Planet has acquired the one-hour special The Hero Dogs Of 9/11 to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The special first ran on Animal Planet in Canada two years ago to mark the attack’s 10th anniversary. The project, from Toronto-based Kelencontent, details the stories of three World Trade Center survivors, and the working dogs that saved lives at Ground Zero. More than 300 dogs were used in the rescue and recovery operation. One of the survivors profiled, who is blind, was led out of the building by his seeing eye dog. Another, who’d been working at the scene with a bomb-sniffing dog, was pulled from the rubble by a rescue dog. The third was the last survivor to be discovered by a dog and pulled from the rubble, 27 hours after the center collapsed.

Formed just after 9/11, Robert De Niro's Tribeca film festival helped New York get back on its feet. The veteran actor tells Ed Pilkington about his love for the city, restoring King of Comedy, and how Twitter could redefine cinema
Robert De Niro has been thinking in recent days about the concept of longevity. The actor has been in the business of making films so long – his debut on the big screen was in 1965 – that his work is now being restored.
"Yeah, I've been thinking about that. Restored, huh? It's kind of amazing," he says, sitting in his production hub in downtown Manhattan, the Tribeca Film Centre.
The restoration in question is the painstaking return to its original glory of King of Comedy, Martin Scorsese's dark 1982 satire on modern celebrity obsession, with its famous punchline: "Better to be king for a night, than schmuck for a lifetime." The movie...

Warning: If you haven’t seen tonight’s episode of Glee, you might want to stop reading now. Everyone else, carry on.
Okay, deep breaths. Has everyone recovered enough from tonight’s gut-wrenching Glee that we can get around to the business of discussing it?
For starters, I know a lot of folks will probably ask if it was “too soon” for Ryan Murphy & Co. to tackle a story arc about gunshots ringing out in the hallways of McKinley High a mere four months after the real and unspeakable shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary. I understand that question, but the...

Fox's Bones gets serious with a somber, respectful 9/11-themed episode airing Nov. 12, appropriately, the day after Veterans Day.
"We've been trying to figure out a way to do an episode that focused on 9/11 for a long time, and it was either too soon or [risked being] exploitative," explains executive producer Stephen Nathan. "But it was important for us to do because Kathy Reichs [author of the books on which the series is based] was very involved in identifying the remains at Ground Zero."

Here it is. The final installment of an epic three-part story arc, "The Late Show (Part 3)." Crazy how this Isn’T the finale. How Louie could give us one more episode after this is more than a little baffling.
It just seems like the perfect way to go out – at least, from what we expect. What do we expect? For me, I was prepared to witness something heart-wrenching and demoralizing. To see Louie’s world crumble, shot down in flames. What I got was something, for the most part, very un-Louie-like.
The opening music indicates there’s more abuse and hopeless sorrow in store for Louie. But, after a few bars, it switches to a slightly more upbeat tune. Luckily, his daughters are there to bring whatever endorphin rush Louie got from jogging back down to Earth. Yet it shows the swing in his mood. In the previous two parts,...

The Avengers, which has had the biggest Us opening in history, climaxes with towers crumbling and mayhem in Manhattan. Squeamishness, it seems, is shortlived in Hollywood
Mad terror in the streets as flying whatsits and killer robots from outer space ricochet off and, more often, crash through 70-story skyscrapers. Mighty towers crumble; concrete chunks spray from the screen. Total Sensurround: the theatre itself shakes as the non-stop cosmic battle-cum-pinball game that is The Avengers reaches its climax in a digital midtown Manhattan.
It's complete mayhem and, reader, I confess that I enjoyed every minute of this ear-splitting, brain-jarring, inordinately protracted cataclysm – even though something similar, if on a far smaller scale, occurred a bit more than 10 years ago, six blocks from my home. On 11 September 2001, planes crashed, buildings collapsed, and debris rained. Some were buried alive, others ran stunned and screaming through New York's concrete canyons.

Comedy duo Tim and Eric have garnered quite a cult following with their previous shows on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, “Tom Goes to the Mayor” and especially “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” Now the two are poised to dominate the world of film with their absurdly funny Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, which features appearances from Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Zach Galifianakis, and Will Forte.
In the film, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim play versions of themselves as failed Hollywood directors who take over a mall in hopes of repaying bloodthirsty movie executives.
Though one might expect them to be particularly animated during an interview, they were fairly laid back when I talked to them. Despite their soft-spoken nature, they did seem to take turns periodically amusing themselves during this interview, as you’ll read below.

"This is not a story about September 11th," proclaim ads for "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," open now nationwide. "It's about every day after." Which is fine, except if you're in the area surrounding Ground Zero, where every day after 9/11 has provided a reminder of the worst terrorist attack in the history of the United States. Now those residents are speaking out against subway ads for the new film, which show the World Trade Center on fire just yards away from the actual site of the tragedy. “We lost 10 guys that day,” said an unnamed firefighter from Ladder 9 in the East Village to the New York Post. “I won't go see it. I saw the ad last night. I just can't. People who live and work around here would be offended by those ads. That happened right here.” That sentiment was echoed by other 9/11 families, many whom were reportedly upset with the commercials.

Tonight’s episode of TLC’s All-American Muslim focused on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. At the heart of the show was the Amen family’s debate over whether siblings Bilal and Shadia’s attendance at a commemoration ceremony was about them showing interfaith unity or feeling pressured to apologize for a horrible act they were not responsible for. You can imagine how carefully this hot-button hour was edited.

A man comes out of a building in Chinatown on fire in the rain. Mac (Gary Sinise) comments on his eyebrows and eyelashes being singed. There's bruising on his his cheek but his face hasn't got the same degree of burns as his chest. Stella (Melina Kanakaredes) comments on there being "something gooey here." Mac: "gooey that's a good forensic word, gooey, I'll have to use that more." Mac notices the trace of melted plastic and finds a discarded mask. Inside the bank, the safety deposit vault was cut away from the wall. Flack: "Gotta wear a mask for a bank robbery, it's a rule." Two bank security guards fired shots and the acetylene tank caught fire. Martin Hummel (Matt Bushell) one of the guards thinks there were two, but he was trying to save his partner, Tony's life. Underground workers known as the 'NYC Sandhogs' blow up a tunnel and one man gets left behind. He's later found under the rubble. Identified as Pete Riggs (Eric Ritter) who has been on site ten years. Danny (Carmine Giovinazzo) appears to be nervous about going underground and Mac (Gary Sinise) asks him if he's bathophobic (fear of depth.) Danny: "I'm not anything-phobic, just a few things that shake me up..." One of them being a 100 feet of granite between "me and daylight." Mac adds they're going to work the same way here as the men do, "rock by rock." A sandhog is anyone who helps in building tunnels, even if they're not actually in the tunnel, they're still one of them. The Vic wasn't shot or stabbed before the explosion but there's trace under his fingernails, which are covered with a plastic bag to protect the evidence. The Da wants the site cleared and running.

Beneath a hazy New York sky, thousands of family members and dignitaries gathered at Ground Zero on Sunday in a tear-filled ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center. Mayor Michael Bloomberg recalled the sunny September morning that turned into "the blackest of nights." "Although we can never un-see what happened here, we can also see that children who lost their parents have grown into young adults, grandchildren have been born and good works and public service have taken root to honor those we loved and lost," Bloomberg says. Nearby, President Obama and former...

Chicago – How do we go on? How do we pick up the pieces after devastation so shocking and damaging that words can hardly do it justice? The great lesson on the ten-year anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11/01 may be that we might have different ways to heal, but we all do it. We move forward. And that ability to go on in the face of unimaginable trauma has rarely been chronicled more beautifully than in Jim Whitaker’s “Rebirth,” a documentary currently on DVD from the great Oscilloscope Studios and airing Sunday night on Showtime. Don’t miss it.
TV Rating: 4.5/5.0
Even though the film wasn’t complete until recently, Whitaker’s most important filmmaking decision actually came ten years ago. In the days after 9/11, he decided to begin a film about the healing process and chose five people to follow through it. He picked five unique subjects — a widow,...

Precious star Gabourey Sidibe's life was spared on 9/11, because she woke up too late to make it to school.
Sidibe, who was born and raised in New York City, was due to attend class in lower Manhattan on the morning of September 11, 2001, but, after falling behind schedule, the actress was forced to stay home - and things could have turned out quite differently for her had the morning gone as planned.
Speaking to the New York Daily News, she says, "September 11, 2001 was the beginning of my first week at Borough of Manhattan Community College (Bmcc). The school is located in Tribeca and was then split into two campuses: one on the West Side Highway and another building across the street from the World Trade Center.
"I had class that morning at eight. Though this almost never happens to me, I woke up too late to get there on time. Even though I was disappointed in myself for waking up so late, I decided to just turn on my TV and catch a talk show. In about 10 minutes, I became aware of the planes hitting the towers.
"Later that day, one of the towers fell on the school building that I had class in, and people lost their lives. Bmcc shut down for a month because the school became a make-shift space for police, firefighters and EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians).
"When the school did reopen in mid-October, I could smell the soot and ashes from the huge hole in the city that was Ground Zero. The smell lingered in every classroom.
"At the entrance, there were photos of students and teachers who died in the other building, lining the walls as a memorial."...

Sigourney Weaver is set to reprise her role in the 9/11-themed play The Guys as part of a 10th anniversary tribute to those who lost their lives in the horrific terrorist attacks.
The Alien star will return to the stage to play a journalist who helps a fire captain memorialise the men he lost at Ground Zero.
Weaver first took on the role in the months following the 2001 atrocities and the actress is eager to revisit the production, so she can again honour the fallen.
She tells the New York Post, "(At first everyone enjoyed) being together in a room for an hour and a half and being allowed to think about what had happened... Once the lights go down, you are open in a way you are not open when you are watching the news or reading the paper. You can think about things and have emotions and disagree and experience what's going on in the world in a more personal way."
The Guys will be staged at the Museum of Jewish Heritage for a two-night run, beginning on Wednesday.
Weaver's husband, Jim Simpson, will direct.

Ah, August: time to kick back, take some vacation, soak in the end of summer and enjoy a brief respite from the otherwise relentless news cycle. But not this August. From Gadhafi to Irene, the month that ended yesterday was hardly languid: London erupted, Steve Jobs resigned and the markets returned to crisis mode. Oh, and that earthquake, huh?
A little bleary-eyed from all the news, we attempted to determine whether this past month was, in fact, busier than a typical August.

There's something to be said for an opening and closing scene centered on Ground Zero.
While 9/11 has been a huge focus for the show itself, it has remained mostly as a part of conversation and discussion. Therefore, seeing the empty space where the towers once stood enhanced the sentiments about that particular day in a way that was both quietly poignant and dramatically tragic.
From the panning shot of Tommy and the gang's silent stares at the site during the day, to the overhead view at night, the visual was perfect. There was and still is a hole in the United States.
It's that emptiness that aligns perfectly with Tommy's never ending struggle to fill his own void. He's had multiple attempts, of course, from sleeping with his cousin's wife to turning to alcohol, but the fact remains that the particular hole inside him hasn't dissipated.
More importantly, and one...
