Following amapiano beats with your body is like watching a streetcorner shell game, or playing tennis with a rogue ball launcher — more surprising, sexy, and fun than standard 4/4 club bangers. South Africa’s signature groove for roughly a decade, the Soweto-bred slowed-down house music hybrid swiftly went pan-African because Afrobeat-niks, in Nigeria and elsewhere, know rhythm-magic when they hear it. With the long-awaited debut by 22-year old Johannesburg native Tyla Laura Seethal, the music is poised to globalize like never before. Bring it on.

One of the scariest movie characters of all time is no doubt Zelda from Pet Sematary, the deathly ill sister of Rachel Creed who was actually played by male actor Andrew Hubatsek in the ’89 big screen adaptation. Zelda, who suffers from spinal meningitis, makes a brief but unforgettable appearance in the film, and she continues inducing nightmares to this day.
Our friend Gabe Lapeer over at Homemade Horror has captured that original version of Zelda in a brand new hand-sculpted figure, and he’s launching pre-sales in one week.
Pre-sales will run from March 13-15 on the Zelda figure, which recreates the most terrifying moment from Mary Lambert’s movie. Gabe even included Church in the sculpture.

The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, with the tenth day getting into the anti-festive spirit for all the holiday grinches out there. This is for those that approach December with a “bah humbug” attitude and prefer any iconography or holiday theming to be kept to a minimum when it comes to horror. Most of these ten horror titles are technically set on or around Christmas, but can’t muster up enough cheer to really embrace the holiday spirit. Many of which don’t even bother with Christmas at all, beyond a quick scene or mention.
If you’re already sick of Santa Claus, and all things holiday related, here are ten holiday horror movies – technically – that would rather just cut straight to the horror.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

Back in 1986, Patrick Stewart famously balked at playing the role of Jean-Luc Picard on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The role was contracted for six seasons, and the actor had never made that enormous of a commitment before. Many of Stewart's professional colleagues encouraged him to sign the contract, feeling that it was to be lucrative, and that "Star Trek: The Next Generation" would be swiftly canceled and he could walk away and work on other projects. Only his friend Ian McKellan discouraged Stewart from moving to TV, feeling that they both had more important things to be done on stage.
But Stewart signed the contract, went to Los Angeles, and crashed with a friend for a few weeks at a posh mansion in Bel Air. Strewart's rich friends provided him with good food, access to a swimming pool, and fascinating conversation. In exchange, Stewart only needed to bring...

Rock ‘n’ roll and horror: a match made in hell! From electrifying riffs to spine-chilling screams, these heavy metal mashups create a headbanging, heart-pounding experience that resonates with rebels and thrill-seekers alike. Whether you’re a fan of rebellious music or cinema of the fringe, nearly everyone can agree they go together like peanut butter and jelly.
What makes them such perfect partners? Perhaps it’s their shared love for the dark, the dangerous, and the fantastical. Rock ‘n’ roll has always been the music of outcasts, and horror dares to delve into our deepest fears. Together, they create a symphony of shock that thrills and chills.
From demonic deals to killer concerts, rock ‘n’ roll horror movies explore the intersection of music and mayhem. They’re films that rock, scare, and leave us begging for an encore.
So grab your leather jacket, tune your air guitar, and turn up the volume.

The Return to Horror High episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The 1980s, especially the mid-1980s, were basically the heyday of slasher films, many of them were being released each year in theaters and direct-to-video, some of them making huge box office numbers like the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, the Friday the 13th movies, and the Halloween movies. Non-franchise films were not as big both financially and critically but they didn’t do too badly either. Then came Return to Horror High in 1987 (watch it Here). Some would say that the film was ahead of its time, being a very meta horror comedy about slasher films, having endings within endings, and twisting the sub-genre on its head. However, the film failed,...

After two years of being constantly on the road, it's only now that singer-songwriter Yendry has been able to come up for air. Being on the go has meant not always having the time to reflect back on how far she's come. But these days, the 29-year-old is working on remaining present and is grateful for all she's accomplished thus far - making a name for herself as an artist with hit singles in a number of genres and collaborating with the likes of Damian Marley and J Balvin.
"I was recently creating a Pdf of everything I did in the past two years, and I realized it was a lot," Yendry tells Popsugar. "When you're in it and you're just working, sometimes it's hard to just stop, breathe in, let in, and realize what you have achieved. I'm definitely feeling good - a little bit tired -but it's a good tired.

Disney has revealed the first official TV spot for the upcoming Disney+ series American Born Chinese, airing it during Sunday night’s Academy Awards as some of its cast reaped some major gold.
In the 30-second spot, various voiceovers warn, “Dark forces will be coming”, “The gate between earth and heaven is opening” and “The fate of your world hangs in the balance.” Backed with promising-looking action and visual effects American Born Chinese looks to be a solid addition to the streaming service.
The official plot, as per Disney: “Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, American Born Chinese tells the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.

Grabbers director Jon Wright’s latest, Unwelcome, blends modernism with Irish mythology. Described in a pitch as “Gremlins meets Straw Dogs,” Unwelcome introduces the far darrig, tiny bloodthirsty fae also dubbed redcaps for their signature red hats. Yet Wright, who co-wrote with screenwriter Mark Stay, struggles to find a consistent tone. The emphasis on gritty home invasion thriller clashes with the lighter horror-comedy creature feature.
Elation turns to trauma when a pregnancy celebration between Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) and her husband, Jamie (Douglas Booth), morphs into a harrowing home invasion nightmare. Jamie then conveniently inherits a house in rural Ireland, giving the couple the perfect opportunity to flee their dangerous London neighborhood. The locals are welcoming, though superstitious; Maya placates her neighbor (Niamh Cusack) with promises to continue the tradition of leaving proper blood sacrifices at the edge of their garden to appease the far darrig. Remembering to uphold her commitment...

Once upon a time, in the summer of 2016, Netflix debuted a sci-fi/horror ’80s homage from Shawn Levy and the Duffer brothers. Little was known about “Stranger Things” ahead of its premiere, and then the eight-episode season gripped the nation and world.
Beyond the endearing nostalgia, the series boasted an intriguing, layered mystery and a dynamite cast comprised mainly of breakthrough child actors. Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, and Caleb McLaughlin became household names and forces of talent; Winona Ryder wowed audiences with her performance as Joyce Byers, and David Harbour became one of TV’s preeminent dads. Waffles and nosebleeds and D&d were changed forever. When the series concludes it will have run for almost 10 years and five seasons, the last of which have some of Netflix’s longest runtimes and largest production budgets.

Of all the jobs depicted in horror movies that are hazardous to your well-being, babysitting ranks high among the most dangerous. The low hourly rate doesn’t compensate for the utter terror a babysitter will endure from masked intruders or worse.
Halloween Ends opens with a life-altering tragedy of babysitting gone wrong, a shocking twist on the franchise’s babysitting origins. It makes for another fright-filled reminder of the high-risk, low-reward job in the world of horror movies.

Happy Saturday, dear readers! I hope that you’ve been enjoying all of our Indie Horror Month coverage so far, and that you’ll continue to join in on the celebration right here on Daily Dead for the rest of April as well. Yesterday, I paid tribute to the wave of independent horror that was released throughout the 1980s (you can read that piece Here) so I thought it only made sense to focus on a most excellent streaming resource where you can find a ton of great indie genre movies from that decade and watch them for free - Tubi TV.
While Tubi’s collection of ‘80s horror is vast, I went ahead and picked out 25 great genre classics that are currently available on their platform to stream, but please know that by no means is this everything from the 1980s that Tubi has to offer, so be sure...

After Kellie Madison released the proof of concept short The Gate, the high octane film became a viral sensation with 4 million views and it got her the job directing Never Back Down: Revolt, a low budget action film back by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment that got released recently.
With that film under her belt, Madison is hoping to make the leap to direct the feature version of the short that put her on the map. Briarcliff Entertainment’s Tom Ortenberg is taking the concept out to financiers. The short stars Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s Amy Johnston and The Raid 2’s Cecep Arif in a violent struggle by a young woman to save her suicidal sister, whose soul is about to be captured by an unsavory Indonesian crime boss. It leads to a larger adventure to find a pathway to ultimate power, called The Gate.

How many people remember The Gate? For some of us growing up in the 80s, it was one of those movies that looked like it might be uniquely scary and kind of gross and could have easily been one that we had to sneak around to watch thanks to our parents. But the gist of the movie is that after a certain tree is cut down it unearths a geode and a gateway to another dimension that, when opened, would release the forces of evil in a way that could possibly be construed as bad. It’s a little tough to

Berlin-based Picture Tree International has picked up global sales rights to Mexican director Raúl López Echeverría’s feature debut, the socially conscious soccer comedy “Domingo,” and will introduce the film, in final postproduction, to buyers at Latin American film market Ventana Sur this week.
The film tells the story of Domingo, a man of 55 living in a poor suburb of Guadalajara. When his wife abruptly leaves him, he decides to do everything in his power to realize his lifelong dream of becoming a professional soccer commentator. Every Sunday, he commentates on local amateur matches. Yet he could never imagine how much his impassioned commentaries are changing the life of his neighborhood.
According to the director, the screenplay of “Domingo” was inspired by observing certain working-class districts in the suburbs of Guadalajara, where soccer grounds are a central part of the community and dear to the inhabitants’ hearts.

“If all of the people who hate ‘Ishtar’ had seen it,” Elaine May famously said, “I would be a rich woman today.” On Wikipedia’s list of the biggest box-office disasters, with losses over $100 million (at current dollar values), “Ishtar” doesn’t even rate a mention. That’s because the movie lost about $91 million — more in the range of a box-office dud like “Cats.”
But to this day, Elaine May’s 1987 comedy adventure about two floundering singer/songwriters meandering around the Sahara — played by Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman — is considered one of Hollywood’s great box-office debacles, rivaled only by Michael Cimino’s studio-destroying “Heaven’s Gate,” with its loss of $126 million.
Here’s why “Ishtar” outlasted so many bigger money-losers as the poster child for a troubled belly-flop.

Deacon Frost could have been a contender in the Blade spinoff that never was.
Despite his recent turn in True Detective season 3 and his new starring role in Fox’s Deputy, if you go and Google Stephen Dorff right now, the first additional suggested word you’ll get is "Blade." The action-horror was pretty dark and gory compared to most of today’s Marvel offerings, but the studio’s 1998 vision for the vampire Hunter was surprisingly successful, and Dorff proved to be a formidable villain in the film as bloodsucker Deacon Frost, so it’s no wonder that the actor still gets asked about the role.
In a new interview with Et, Dorff, who has been a steady presence in movies since he first popped up as a wee sprog in 1987’s cult horror classic, The Gate, was asked about Marvel’s plans for a new Blade...

Natsume Soseki (1867 – 1919) was the preeminent Father of Modern Japanese Literature (said to have begun after the Meiji Restoration in 1868). Born as Natsume Kin’nosuke, he was a precocious child and grew up to be extremely smart and outstanding. He studied at Tokyo Imperial University (present-day University of Tokyo) and was sent on a government scholarship to Britain where he learnt English Literature and interacted with Western culture. The effects of such close contact with a world so foreign to him proved debilitating.
During his stay in London, Soseki was mentally disturbed and receded into himself. However, such mental disturbances did not plague him intermittently or temporarily. In fact, Soseki battled mental illnesses such as depression and suffered from physical illnesses like ulcers for as long as he lived. According to academic Jay Rubin, it would appear as if “The shadow of death hangs heavy over…Soseki’s career.

When I was a kid, my family would spend New Year's Eve watching movies rented from the local video store. As a young film fanatic, this was one of my favorite nights of the year; not only was everyone else in my family finally sharing my favorite pastime with me, but I would even get to stay up way past my regular bedtime watching movie after movie after movie. The only downside of this tradition was that we weren't the only household in town to do this, apparently, because most of the good movies were usually taken by the time we made it to the video store to stock up. That meant we were often forced to rent more off-beat titles—the ones that hadn't been snatched up because most people hadn't even heard of them.

Lots of familiar faces have popped up in Westeros across the eight seasons of “Game of Thrones.” From musicians to comedians to the severed head of a former U.S. president, the HBO series has a habit of throwing in easter eggs for eagle-eyed viewers to spot. I'm not the biggest fan of director Eli Roth. Cabin Fever was a decent film but I haven't really cared for anything else that he's done, especially the Hostel films. The guy is mostly known for his style of hardcore horror and torture porn, so it was shocking to see that he was going to be directing a family horror movie for Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment called The House With a Clock In Its Walls. I was even more shocked by the fact that I actually enjoyed the movie!
