In my mind, the original 1986 Transformers: The Movie is the best Transformers movie ever made. I don’t care what anyone says. I loved that film, even though they killed off half of my favorite characters within the first 30 minutes. When I was a kid I was lucky enough to see it on the big screen at a special screening for some of the cast and crew members. I’ll never forget that experience. The movie just oozes '80s awesomeness.
I’m excited to report that Shout! Factory and Hasbro Studio are teaming up to release a special Blu-ray and DVD to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary. I seriously can’t believe that it’s been 30 freakin’ years!
The 30th Anniversary Edition will feature some bonus content and collectible packaging. The film boasts an impressive voice cast that included Orson Welles in his final role as Unicron, Peter Cullen,...

With so many G.I. Joe characters created over the years there were bound to be a few useless duds that would be left behind in a battle against Cobra or any other terrorist organization. I love G.I. Joe, I grew up with this franchise, but I've got to say, some of the G.I. Joe members that Hasbro came up with are pretty ridiculous. Here are ten characters that really have no business being G.I. Joes. These characters are so lame it was hard to find decent pictures of them.
Sci-Fi - Seymour P. Fine
Sci-Fi is like a hot great highlighter. His primary specialty was his ability to fire his laser. You know who else is good at firing a laser? Every other G.I. Joe team member! Lasers are all anybody has for weapons. You know what his skill was in firing a laser, though? Standing really still. They...

G.I. Joe has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was introduced to the cartoon and action figure toy line by my uncle, who was working on the cartoon series as a storyboard artist when it first launched in the 80s. I absolutely loved that show, and my uncle is the one that gave me my first G.I. Joe action figure and vehicle. It was the Combat Jet Skystriker Xp-14F, and he gave it to me for Christmas one year. It was seriously the coolest toy that I ever had, and from that moment on I was hooked on G.I. Joe toys. I've been collecting them ever since. You can see my reaction to opening up that present in the picture above.
Of course when I was kid I didn't appreciate the toys as much. I lost and destroyed so many of them.

A quick review of tonight's "Community" coming up just as soon as I suppressive fire at you... I am almost exactly the age Jeff Winger is revealed to be in "G.I. Jeff," and like him, I poured an enormous amount of time, energy and my parents' money into the '80s "G.I. Joe" cartoon and its associated action figures (and, on occasion, the Larry Hama-written Marvel comic, which was genuinely good). I dreamed of one day owning the hovercraft, wondered how useful specialized Joes like Snow Job and Shipwreck were on traditional missions and could sing a few bars of "Cold Slither" on command. I was a nerd of many stripes, and a "G.I. Joe" nerd was one of those.(*) (*) If you need further proof of my obsessiveness, note the recent podcast where I derailed our "From Dusk Till Dawn" discussion to note that DJ Cotrona and Adrianne Palicki...

If you've been waiting for the perfect time to buy the first season of The Walking Dead on blu-ray, now might be the time as the standout introduction to the hit AMC drama is 60% off. Sad you haven't seen Sgt. Slaughter in a G.I. Joe movie, yet? Then purchase the special edition blu-ray of G.I. Joe: The Movie which also includes the now infamous Public Service Announcements. Soul Eater is definitely a must-see for shonen anime fans and it's currently over 50% off. For the flip-side of anime, Attack on Titan is all the rage in Japan right now, expect the series to be the next big thing here in the states very shortly. Oblivion was just released in theaters but it's already available for pre-order on bu-ray at 43% off. +The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray] $19.99 [60% off, save $30.00] +G.I. G.I. Joe: Retaliation made over $132 million this weekend, and it has inspired the studio to move forward with another sequel! It didn't hurt that the movie starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Bruce Willis, and Channing Tatum. It's really not surprising that we'll be seeing a third G.I. Joe film. As much as I enjoyed the action and characters in this latest film, the story and script were still very weak. Maybe they'll get that aspect of the movie franchise right the third time around.
It will be interesting to see how they move forward with a third movie, and what characters they'll include. They killed off a major character in Retaliation, and it's hard to imagine the G.I. Joe franchise continuing without him. Director Jon Chu was at the screening of the film I attended, and he addressed this aspect of the story with a question asking, "Can...

Paramount Pictures has released two new action-packed TV spots for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and they've got some cool new footage for you to feast your eyes upon.
I watched the retro 1980s G.I. Joe: The Movie again recently, and I forgot how much I loved it as a kid! I remember watching that thing over and over again. If you haven't seen it yet, you should check it out. But if you didn't grow up with it, you probably won't find it as awesome as I do.
I'm excited for this new movie though, it looks a lot more like the animated series most of us grew up with. The movie comes out on March 29th, 2013!
The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. The film stars D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee,...

During a recent interview with The Score's Arda Ocal, former World Wrestling Federation Champion Sgt. Slaughter recounts how a conflict between two toy companies has prevent him from making a cameo in G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Sgt. Slaughter (Robert Remus) has the unique honor of being the first G.I. Joe figure based on a real life person. The likeness is of the Sarge, but the backstory is for the most part fabricated. In the G.I. Joe universe Sgt. Slaughter is a drill instructor. His character appeared in six episodes of the original 1980's Sunbow cartoon, two of the Marvel comic books, and G.I. Joe: The Movie. His G.I. Joe action figures are some of the most popular figures ever produced in the G.I. Joe toyline. G.I. Joe Retaliation stars Channing Tatum, D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Ray Park, Adrianne Palicki, Jonathan Pryce, RZA, Ray Stevenson,...

If you were eagerly anticipating the release of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" -- originally scheduled to hit theaters on June 29 -- you've probably been disappointed to discover that the film has been postponed all the way back to March 29, 2013. Paramount's official reason for bumping the Dwayne Johnson-starring sequel was to convert the movie to 3D. But many industry insiders have been skeptical, given that nine months is an awfully long time to postpone something that was less than five weeks away from premiering (especially with all the publicity and merchandise having already gone out). Not surprisingly, there is more to this story than just 3D conversion, and Deadline has the inside scoop (Massive Spoilers Ahead): Apparently, audiences were not happy with the decision to see Channing Tatum -- who plays Duke, the leader of the Joes -- get killed off in the first few minutes of the film. (Then again,...

The G.I. Joe franchise was invented back in the pre-Revolutionary era of Colonial America, when Li’l Tommy Jefferson spent the best summer vacation of his life at sleepover parties with Li’l Georgie Washington and Li’l Johnny Adams, where they would re-enact famous battles from the French and Indian War using wooden figurines cut into human form. Johnny, predictably, would always ruin the fun by accusing Georgie and Tommy of sedition, at which point their cool older cousin Ben Franklin would give Johnny a wedgie. (Kids: This is all true history, as far as you know.) Since then,...

I must preface this review by saying that I am not a G.I. Joe fan. When people say, “And now you know…” I reply, “And knowledge is power!” while my husband sadly shakes his head in dismay. (The debate of G.I. Joe vs. School House Rock is on-going). This franchise is for little boys and boys-at-heart who grew up with the toys and the cartoon show, who sat in their basement reenacting battles with tanks, helicopters, and action figures. For the young kids, G.I. Joe: The Movie will be a giant toy commercial, and for those who grew up with it, the movie is a walk down memory lane, a big old slice of '80’s animated nostalgia.
Looking back, I have a hard time remembering the central conflict in the movie, but then again, I seriously doubt that it matters all that much. All non-G.I. Joe fans...

This week's DVD and Blu-ray releases seem to have an overabundance of testosterone starting with the two biggest titles Clash of the Titans starring Sam Worthington, and Repo Men starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker. Also hitting stores today we have the latest Warner animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood, kung fu biopic Ip Man starring Donnie Yen, and the Dtv comedy Operation: Endgame starring Zach Galifianakis and Rob Corddry. Clearly the most anticipated title of the week, however, is the Blu-ray extended cut of Rambo -- now with 20% more throat ripping! Will you be buying or renting anything this week? Clash of the Titans (2010) [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Repo Men [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) Operation: Endgame [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) Vincere [7] Accidents Happen [8] (+ Blu-ray [9]) Ip Man [10] (+ Blu-ray [11]) The Job [12] Jesse Stone: No Remorse [13] Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated [14] Ray Bradbury's Chrysalis [15] Eclipse Series 22 Presenting Sacha Guitry: Criterion Collection [16] The Secret of the Grain:...

Clash of the Titans Seeing people talk about this new release on Twitter after watching it on Blu-ray is quite comical. For all the hatred thrown in this film's direction upon its release I'm seeing a bunch of people saying, "Hey, it's not that bad," after watching it on Blu-ray. Well, it wasn't all that bad in the first place, it was just corny. Too many people allowed the crummy 3D to cloud their vision as they began judging the film based on something that didn't matter. I gave the film a B- upon its release and I'd say it's still hovering around that grade. Either that or a C+, but more importantly, this is just mindless fun and at home it's much easier to enjoy such a film. However, the special features are junk. The Maximum Movie Mode on the Blu-ray is distracting,...

When I originally pitched a review of G.I. Joe: The Movie to my editors at Cinematical, I admit I had a certain amount of snark in mind when contemplating and comparing the 1987 animated film to its 2009 live-action counterpart. Admittedly, I liked Stephen Sommers' film if for no other reason than its effectiveness in transporting me back to a 12-year-old mindset, but the truth is that although I'm some 22 years older, I really was a fan of the series at that age, and it didn't compare.
But the interesting thing I discovered is that neither of these cinematic iterations is any more or less preposterous than the other, nor more or less dramatically credible. In fact, the only difference is that one literally is a cartoon, while the other aspires to the thrilling heights of incredulity of its predecessor. In which case, G.I. Joe: The Movie is essential viewing for...

Back in the 90’s Marvel were well known for their tremendous animated series – X-Men, Spiderman, Silver Surfer. But one cartoon that never made the airwaves was Captain America. In 1998, Saban Entertainment teamed up once more with Marvel to begin work on an animated series based on one of the most iconic of Marvel’s characters…
Will Meugniot (who had also worked on another war-based cartoon, G.I. Joe: The Movie) was asked to design the series alongside Frank Gomez, Shannon Denton, Roy Burdine and John Fang; and the series’ writing staff included comic book writers and authors, including Michael Reaves and Steve Engleheart. On the whole, the series was faithful to the 1940’s era Captain America in much the same way that Stan and Jack’s 1960’s retelling of Cap’s golden age stories were true to their source material – there were some changes, notably that Cap worked alongside a team...

One of the greatest things about The Super Bowl is its ability to bring together folks from all walks of life in a celebration of teamwork. It's not unlike the theme of "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero" and its comic book offspring in that regard, demonstrating how a group of spirited individuals can work together to achieve victory over their rivals (or in the case of the Joe team, evil terrorists).
This embodiment of teamwork should come as no surprise, especially considering the accomplishments of Joe soldiers with football roots.
Read on to learn how football has inspired some of the greatest G.I. Joe characters of all time.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Season 1.1
Cast: Duke, Scarlett, Cobra Commander, Flint, Destro, Zartan, Snake Eyes
Running Time: 22 episodes (22 minutes each)
Due out: July 21, 2009
Plot: G. I. Joe is the codename for America’s daring, highly trained, special mission force. Its purpose: To defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless, terrorist organization determined to rule the world. Yes, that’s straight from the theme song, but that pretty much sums it up, right? Maybe this will help more … Duke & Flint = good guys. Cobra Commander & Destro = bad guys.
Who’s It For? Kids, kids kids … and then after that, guys who grew up loving the cartoons and toys.
Episodes: There are four DVDs in the mix and each are separated by a continuous story, except for the final disc. It’s great to have the mini-series, but the one thing they do a terrible job of is character development.
