They say that on quiet nights you can hear the chants coming from small Norwegian villages, "More 'Troll,' more 'Troll,' More 'Troll!'" Indeed, fans of the Norwegian straight-to-Netflix creature feature "Troll" have been famished for more troll-on-human violence since the film's release in 2022.
Directed by Roar Uthaug, the accomplished filmmaker behind high-intensity spectacles such as "The Wave" and 2018's "Tomb Raider" reboot, "Troll" was something of a surprise hit on the streaming platform. Back in December of 2022, "Troll" scored the second spot on Netflix's coveted Top 10 Most Watched list, right behind the smash hit series "Wednesday." For a foreign film dropped on the platform with little to no marketing, that's majorly impressive. Even moreso: "Troll" went on to become Netflix's most-watched non-English film of all time.

Ah, Ghoulies – the other, other Gremlins knock-off. This label is something of unfair misnomer, as the first Ghoulies film was in production at the same time as Joe Dante’s classic film. This little franchise that could sit on a porcelain throne of cult appreciation alongside other Tiny Terror pictures like Critters and Troll. The […]

Exclusive: Amazon has put in development Troll, a comedy from writer Lee Sung Jin (Undone), and Joe Lewis’ Amplify Pictures. Rhys Thomas (Documentary Now!) is attached to direct and executive produce.
Written by Lee, Troll is a comedy series about an eternal optimist, who refuses to give up on his dreams of being a world-renowned documentary filmmaker, despite living off gig economy apps and never actually making a documentary. After being bullied online, he finally sets out to make a film exposing his troll, only to stumble upon what might be a geopolitical conspiracy.
Lee executive produces with Thomas. Lewis, who is under a first-look deal with Amazon, produces via his Amplify Pictures.
Lee is currently a co-executive producer on Amazon’s Undone. His previous credits include Netflix’s Tuca & Bertie and HBO’s Silicon Valley. Lee’s FX pilot, Singularity, was directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Annecy — “·Hello, I’m Margie Cohn, and I am president of DreamWorks….”

It’s hard to underestimate the goodwill that Universal’s DreamWorks Animation has built up over the years at Annecy, first by creating a studio as an alternative to Disney, and most recently by one of its crowning achievements, the “How to Train Your Dragon” movie trilogy, presented as works in progress at Annecy to reverent appreciation, and celebrated this year by a medley of special moments from the three movies and the presence on stage of director Dean Deblois.

Shrill doesn't get everything right in its depiction of internet trolling, but it engages with this vital modern issue in helpful ways.
Throughout the first season of Hulu's half-hour feminist comedy Shrill, Annie is vexed by a troll commenting on her articles. The troll follows the trajectory of Annie’s career – when she’s celebrating her first article and its great reception, the troll first appears, ready and waiting to knock her down. Hanging out with her friends? A notification: “pig fuck tit bitch cum hog.” When she publishes her own personal manifesto of reclaiming her body, an article that resonates with so many others, her troll comes out in force, invoking her father’s cancer.
For many women, the running troll plot on Shrill is all too familiar. It’s a reminder that no matter what women achieve, there will be always someone there to knock you back into place.

It took just a few months for the team at Goodbye Kansas Studios to create a stunning cinematic short demo called “Troll” using the latest version of Unreal Engine.
The short, directed and written by Deep Forest Films’ Björne Larson, shows a princess playing with a trio of fiery sprites before they’re scared away by some hidden, looming beast deep in a forest. The entire video was created using the Unreal Engine.
“I truly believe that the Hollywood engine is Unreal, a powerful story-telling tool for all game and film-makers,” Larson said.
After showing off the film, Unreal’s Nick Penwarden took to the stage at the Epic Games Gdc keynote to talk about some of the tech that went into creating the short. Specifically, he highlighted the creations use of real-time ray tracing, which allowed the creators to essentially light the digital human the same way filmmakers would in the real world.

Shrill has a complicated relationship with its source material but is nevertheless a fun half-hour Aidy Bryant party.
This is a spoiler-free review of Shrill.
What happens when you take the work of one of the sharpest feminist minds of our time and filter it through a feel-good half-hour comedy? I’m honestly not sure, and therein lies the problem.
Hulu has adapted Lindy West’s 2016 memoiristic essay collection Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, which deals predominantly with themes of gender, size, popular culture, and what it means when women take up space, as a vehicle for the incredibly talented Aidy Bryant. The show isn’t a straight adaptation of West’s best-selling book, which is similar to her work as a staff writer for Jezebel, New York Times contributor, and co-founder of Shout Your Abortion, but rather a fictional show that’s inspired by its themes and sometimes...

“Captain Marvel” is set in the 1990s, so be ready for a nostalgic ride back in time when Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) takes us to Earth.
As seen in the trailer, Larson’s Captain Marvel crashes through the roof of a now-extinct Blockbuster Video store. But that’s not all of antique — and some extinct — items and objects we see in the movie — and TheWrap is here to round ‘em up.
See below for all the references to pop culture in “Captain Marvel” — and yes, some of them are not from the ’90s, but even earlier.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus became just the sixth woman in a 20-year history to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Sunday, following in the footsteps of Tina Fey, Carol Burnett and Ellen DeGeneres.
The “Seinfeld” and “Veep” star accepted the award with style, delivering some sick burns at the expense of all the prior honorees.
“Tina was honored with the Mark Twain Prize, too. You know, before they got real serious about [it],” Louis-Dreyfus said during a ceremony at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall in New York City.
Fey, who won the prize in 2011, applauded Louis-Dreyfus for being a performer who in “Seinfeld” didn’t feel the need to show a bare midriff in order to get attention.

In the early ’80s, small creatures called Mogwais forever changed the horror comedy landscape. The year was 1984 and Joe Dante’s Gremlins (written by Chris Columbus) became a smash hit for Warner Bros., bringing in over $153 million in North America alone and securing its spot as the number four highest grossing film of the year. The movie was a genre bender, opting for black comedy that lightly dipped its toes into horror waters (despite the warning to Not Get Them Wet!). These little guys were cute and cuddly (until you fed them after midnight), and were so immensely popular, they launched ginormous merchandising and marketing campaigns and spawned a cluster of knock-off movies all centered around small, weird, cutesy-gross little creatures. Ghoulies II was one of those movies.
Mostly unconnected to the original film, Ghoulies II follows the pesky little toilet monsters as they wreak havoc in an amusement park funhouse called Satan’s Den.

Without question, being a stepparent can be rough. It’s a balancing act between wanting what’s best for the child, and the need to ingratiate oneself and hopefully, earn and obtain love. This is a tightrope that Jerry Blake (Terry O’Quinn) has no interest in walking – if he can’t implement his perfect family plan, he switches policies in the most violent way possible. Welcome to the world of The Stepfather (1987), a pretty good thriller elevated to classic status due to a legendary performance by O’Quinn.
And while Jerry Blake has little patience for deviation from his ideals, so too do Henry Morrison and Bill Hodgkins – all identities that our stepdad creates in his twisted pursuit of perfection. (If at first you don’t succeed, kill and kill again.) The Stepfather proves that home is where the hurt is.

Our host for tonight is Julia Louis-Dreyfus, best known for her work on Seinfeld and Veep and for being something of an all-around comedy goddess. She held her own tonight in an episode that was a bit hit-or-miss, with pre-taped segments outshining weaker live sketches, but overall containing several memorably funny moments. Let’s dig in! Cold Open: Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton go toe to toe in the latest democratic debate, in which they are faced with audience questions from New Yorkers Elaine Benes and Rachel Green. I’m ready for the primaries to be over not just because they’ve been so exhausting, but also because I want SNL to have some new material to play with in their cold opens. Right now, it’s pretty much Donald Trump isracist and repulsive, Ted Cruz is evil and repulsive, Bernie Sanders is poor and kooky, Hillary Clinton wants it real bad,...

1986’s Critters sometimes feels like a summation of all those more popular monster comedies that came before.
Along with teen sex comedies, slasher films, and jingoistic action hero cartoons, the early-to-mid-‘80s, depending upon your taste, was a golden era for what might most simply be called monster comedies. So we got Gremlins, Ghoulies, C.H.U.D., Q, The Winged Serpent, Basket Case, Troll, a double handful of others and their ensuing sequels. If you wanted to push it some, you could even toss E.T. and Ghostbusters in the mix. Despite the contemporary settings, hip jokes and cultural references, most were clearly modeled after classic ‘50s sci fi and monster movies like The Blob, most were relatively mild and family friendly (at least when compared with the nihilism of the slasher films), and a number of them went on to make lots and lots of money.

In the wake of the success of Joe Dante’s classic Gremlins in the mid-’80s, movie theaters were flooded with low-budget horror movies about pint-sized creatures wreaking havoc on unsuspecting humans. No one took better advantage of this phenomenon than Charles Band, who would build a dynasty of films about little monsters first with his Empire Pictures and later with Full Moon Features—everything from Ghoulies to Puppet Master, Demonic Toys to Dolls. One of Empire’s first fantasy horror films about little monsters, 1986’s Troll makes its HD debut on Scream Factory’s Blu-ray alongside its notorious sequel, Troll 2, often considered one of the worst movies ever made.
The original Troll, directed by makeup effects legend John Carl Buechler in his feature debut, tells the story of the Potter family, recent transplants to a San Francisco apartment complex who begin to notice strange goings-on in their building,...

It's billed as a sequel to Cloverfield, but is 10 Cloverfield Lane all it seems? We take a look at the subject of unrelated sequels...
In an era where it's just about impossible to make a high-profile movie without at least something leaking onto the web, producer Jj Abrams seems to have pulled off the ultimate coup in recent months: he and his company Bad Robot have secretly created a follow-up, of sorts, to the 2008 hit monster movie, Cloverfield.
On the 15th January, a trailer landed for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic horror thriller that Abrams described in a statement to Collider as a "blood relative" of that earlier film directed by Matt Reeves.
The premise is this: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character, Michelle, is injured in a car accident and wakes up in a bunker with 40-something survivalist, Howard (John Goodman).

A few questions: 1) What the hell is happening? 2) Is this some sick joke? 3) Is it all over? Try your best to make sense out of this: according to a dubious press release, the campy, low-budget 1986 horror movie "Troll" (followed by the so-bad-it's-good cult classic "Troll 2") is being "reprised" for a whole new generation by original writer/director John Carl Buechler as a 3D animated feature entitled -- and I swear to god this is true -- "Troll: The Rise of Harry Potter Jr." It gets better! 2015 Oscar winner Patricia Arquette is allegedly voicing the role of a witch. “The original ‘Troll’ film has achieved cult status, and based upon its success we believed that the timing was right to produce an updated 3D animated version for a whole new generation of filmgoers," said Buechler in a statement. “We are already in pre-production. We have the financing in place and a strong international distributor.

It looks like Troll is the latest classic film to get the remake/reboot treatment, as today brings word of an animated revival on both the big and small screens. Come inside to learn more!
There's a new wizard in town! Sort of. Sc Films International, a London-based company, is in pre-production for a new project which will reprise 'Troll', a 1986 cult classic. It is to be produced as an animated film and television series titled Troll: The Rise of Harry Potter, Jr. However, do not confuse this with the J.K. Rowling franchise as Harry Potter, Harry Potter Jr., and his family were characters in Troll which was independently produced and distributed 11 years before Rowling's version!

Oscar winner Patricia Arquette has signed on to voice a witch in “Troll: The Rise of Harry Potter, Jr.,” an animated revival of the 1986 cult classic horror film “Troll.” John Carl Buechler, the writer and director of the original film, has agreed to co-produce the full-length 3D animated feature film along with Peter Davy. Newcomer Baxter Barlett will be the voice of young Harry Potter, Jr., a character previously played by Noah Hathaway — and yes, there really was a cinematic character named Harry Potter before J.K. Rowling’s boy wizard became a cultural phenomenon. Also read: J.K. Rowling Slams Sexist Serena.

Rowling’s world, as the new project’s lawyers are at pains to point out. It’s actually an animated follow-up to 1986 oddity Troll, and Patricia Arquette is the first person to be announced as part of the voice cast.Yes, despite the fact that it was critically mauled upon release, Troll – which saw the titular creature invade a San Francisco apartment on the hunt for a magical ring that can turn him back into human form – has become something of a cult curio, if not exactly a hit.Now the original film’s director, John Carl Buechler is involved in the new film, known as Troll: The Rise Of Harry Potter, Jr., which finds the young...

Having issued definitive collector’s editions of a number of high-profile horror classics of the ’80s and ’90s, Scream Factory often turns to smaller and more obscure titles to remind fans of some of the gems that once lined video store shelves. Lately they’ve been killing it with HD releases of Charles Band’s old Empire Pictures titles, several of which are appearing on home video for the first time since VHS (like their recent release of Ghost Town, for example). While both Cellar Dweller and Catacombs got a DVD release in 2013 as part of an “All Night Horror Marathon” four-film collection (the DVD debut of both movies), this new double feature Blu-ray is the first time either can be seen in high-def.

Stuart Gordon shot his first film, 1985's much beloved gorefest Re-Animator, in Los Angeles but then decamped to Italy to shoot Dolls, his second movie and second terror tale. While there, Gordon was also taken down a peg, or 12, by a local craftsman. "They didn’t shoot sound in Italy, they weren't used to that," says Gordon, whose other directing credits include From Beyond, Castle Freak, and 2005's William H. Macy-starring Edmond. "I remember there was one day when I was shooting something and there was a carpenter hammering in the background, working on another one of our sets—hammering and sawing.

Arguably the greatest female comedic actor ever (she has the Emmys to prove it), Julia Louis-Dreyfus hardly needs an introduction.
At only 21 years old, the actress was cast on "Saturday Night Live," a Cinderella-like start for the young New York native. While the show didn't catapult her to fame, it was a stepping-stone that culminated with her landing the role of Elaine Benes on "Seinfeld" (1989 - 1998). Proving there's no "'Seinfeld' curse," Louis-Dreyfus has had plenty of success since the acclaimed NBC sitcom ended, raking in several Emmys along the way. Just this summer, she took home her latest trophy for her work on HBO's "Veep."
From her eyebrow-raising family background to her actress half-sister, here are 21 things you probably don't know about Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
1. Julia Scarlett Elizabeth Louis-Dreyfus was born January 13, 1961 in New York, New York to Judith LeFever and Gérard Louis-Dreyfus.
2. Her parents divorced when Louis-Dreyfus was still just a baby.

A monster B-movie from the late 80’s that many people won’t have heard of and many other people will have completely forgotten about, Cellar Dweller is one of those unusual little movies that gets buried beneath a stack of similar titles and only really has a chance to be woken up again if a company decides to pick up the rights and release it. 101 Films, here in the UK, did just that, and so 2014 finally saw a DVD release of the film.
Helmed by the director behind other corny cult films such as Troll and Friday the 13th Part VII, John Carl Buechler, Cellar Dweller manages to grab attention with two members of its otherwise unfamiliar cast. Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator) and Lily Munster herself,...

It's been 30 years, but we all still remember the three rules: Don't expose them to bright light, don't get them wet, and never feed them after midnight.
"Gremlins," which opened on June 8, 1984, has been a pop culture mainstay ever since, playing often on TV, launching a number of careers, influencing countless other tongue-in-cheek horror movies, and even changing the way movies are rated.
Still, as familiar as you are with adorable Gizmo and demonic Stripe, there may be many things you don't know about "Gremlins" -- like the famous voices behind the gremlins, the in-jokes, and the film's role in the creation of the PG-13 rating. Read on for more secrets of the mogwai.

The latest additions are Noah Hathaway (Sushi Girl, Troll, Neverending Story) rounding out the prison guard crew as Alvarez and Brian Thompson ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," Fright Night Part 2, Star Trek: Enterprise) as the lead role of death row inmate Richard Sullivan.
Several other actors are in talks to fill out the cast, which is very close to being complete, so expect more soon!
Producer, co-writer (with Erin Kohut), and creator of the graphic novel Peter Simeti previously promised, "We are making a horror film that has as much 'brains' in it as it does 'guts'."
