1999 was one of the best years in video game history. Granted, 1999 wasn’t as historically great of a year for video games as it was for movies, but the end of the ’90s saw gaming’s best developers scramble to bring us into the future and honor the past. The result was a mind-blowing collection of titles that feels especially shocking to look back at when you consider how much the industry has slowed down in terms of major yearly releases since then.
What were the best games of 1999, though? The answer to that question will obviously (hopefully obviously) vary wildly from person to person. At the very least, though, it’s a fun conversation to have. Perhaps more importantly, it’s fascinating to look back on (and revisit) those games and take another look at them through a modern lens.
Before we get into that, though, here are a...

Frank Farian, the mastermind producer responsible for the groups Milli Vanilli, Boney M., La Bouche, and more, has died. He was 82 years old.
Over the course of his six-decade career, Farian saw considerable success as a songwriter and producer, but his time as the mastermind behind Milli Vanilli — and their infamous lip-syncing controversy — is likely what most remember him for. Farian first met the group’s frontmen, Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, in Frankfurt, and signed a contract with them in January 1988, locking them into a deal.
Then, dissatisfied with the quality of the group’s vocal performances, Farian employed session vocalists — including Charles Shaw, John Davis, Brad Howell, and others — to provide the lead vocal parts for the duo’s recordings, leading to an arrangement where Pilatus and Morvan, against their desires, lip-synced the parts that they claimed to be singing themselves.

Welcome to this week’s review of Nxt, right here on Nerdly. Let’s get straight into it and see what went down in this episode…
Match #1: Ilja Dragunov def. Wes Lee The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The Mad Dragon is one step closer to realizing his dream as Nxt Champion as he defeated Wes Lee to become the No. 1 Contender to face Carmelo Hayes at Nxt No Mercy. The two competitors left it all in the ring as they exchanged their signature offense like chops, splashes, and even a suplex from Ilja Dragunov to Lee on the announce table. In the end, Dragunov came away the victor after vicious shots from both Superstars, punching his ticket to Nxt No Mercy for a date with Nxt Champion Carmelo Hayes for the Nxt Title.

Following a cheeky cold open mocking the Trump arrest, with the accused criminal game show host turned president comparing himself to Jesus Christ, and a monologue that featured a cameos from Martin Short and Lorne Michaels, this week’s Saturday Night Live host (and former cast member) Molly Shannon brought back one of her most cherished SNL characters: Jeannie Darcy, a shockingly dull stand-up comic.

The All Valley Tournament changed the game heading into Season 5 of Cobra Kai. Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) were forced to shutter Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang. Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) pulled off a full takeover of Cobra Kai after setting up John Kreese (Martin Kove) for the slammer. Now, the “No Mercy” branded dojo is primed for expansion. If that weren’t enough, foes old (Mike Barnes!) and new (Kim Da-Eun) are emerging from the shadows. Our favorite karate kidders are now facing their biggest challenges yet. But Gianni DeCenzo, who plays Demetri, says not to count out his sensais just yet. “It’s not over until Danny and Johnny say it’s over,” he tells TV Insider. We caught up with the fan favorite ahead of the Netflix series’ September 9 return. One of the most pivotal scenes last season saw Demetri lift Eli “Hawk...

Now that Netflix has put the kibosh on The Punisher TV series, there remain many True Believers out there who hope they haven’t seen the last of Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle. Though it’s possible we may see him reprise the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe one day, guarantees of this sort can never be made.
Still, there’s another option for Bernthal to continue on as the anti-hero, and that’s through the medium of video games. After all, he’s got a starring gig in Ghost Recon Breakpoint. And when it comes to Frank Castle himself, he’s appeared in team-up games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, but he’s also headlined some titles of his own, most notably The Punisher (2005) and The Punisher: No Mercy (2009).
Taking all that into account, Bernthal was asked if he’d be down for voicing Castle in such an endeavor,...

For a clumsy, fleeting moment, the punchline was the most potent tool in a rapper’s war chest. The “hashtag rap” era birthed, built, and sustained careers, allowing rappers as varied as Big Sean, Drake, Lil Wayne, Fabolous, and Ludacris to create hits built on the same formula. Performers would introduce a joke or premise in the first half of a lyric and immediately deliver a punchline at the end of a bar, repeating that same structure for each subsequent lyric. While none of these artists necessarily created the technique,...

2K Sports recently revealed the first details of WWE 2K20 (2019), the upcoming annual installment of the popular pro wrestling video game franchise.
Based on information provided, the newest entry looks pretty underwhelming; the biggest features boasted in Monday’s reveal included the return of the WWE Universe and Showcase Mode, along with the uninspired Towers Mode from last year’s title, the ability to play as female superstars in Mycareer Mode as well as men, and the addition of mixed tag team matches – a feature that has been inexplicably missing for many years.

The trend of action films focused on female leads in South Korea continues, with director Lim Kyung-taek’s new film “No Mercy”. While “The Villainess”, for example, mashed up action with some good old-fashioned Korean melodrama and “The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion.” tells a bloody, brutal female “superhero” tale, “No Mercy” has a more straight forward “Taken” tale of abduction and revenge.

The times are a-changin’ with more and more female-centric action films. Films like “The Villainess”, “A Special Lady” and this year’s “No Mercy” have flipped the genre on its head with engaging plots backed by its solid female leads. Director Jung Da-won’s new film “Girl Cops” takes the once exclusive-to-male genre of buddy-cop action comedies with a female duo of characters getting together to bash baddies and fight crime.
Synopsis

He could have had it all, yet he never quite lost it all either. The mysterious and rather annoying case of Richard Gere
I've been rolling my eyes at Richard Gere for 30 years, alternately alienated and charmed by his good looks and his shockingly evident narcissism and self-regard; his abidingly terrible taste in projects, and the fact that somehow, no matter how many movies like Intersection he makes (or like King David, or Mr Jones) sooner or later there will come an end to his lengthy career-drought and, like a flailing magician, he will somehow revive his good name and box office rep with a blockbuster comeback like Pretty Woman, or an intelligent movie like Internal Affairs. Or, Nicholas Jarecki's very watchable new thriller Arbitrage.

Richard Gere’s extraordinary talent and remarkable career deserves to be recognized. This year his outstanding performance in “Arbitrage” has been embraced by both the critics and the public at large. Gere plays the most self-serving Wall Street bastard since Gordon Gekko in Nicholas Jarecki’s “Arbitrage.” Actor and humanitarian Richard Gere can currently be seen starring in Nicholas Jarecki’s “Arbitrage” opposite Susan Sarandon and Tim Roth. Gere is known for his diversity of roles, from his Golden Globe winning performance in “Chicago” to the critically acclaimed “Pretty Women,” “An Officer and a Gentleman,” “American Gigolo,” and “Primal Fear.” He was last seen in “Amelia” alongside Hilary Swank and Ewan McGregor and in Anton Fuqua’s “Brooklyn’s Finest,” starring Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke. Other recent credits include “Nights in Rodanthe,” “I’m Not There,” “The Hoax,” “The Hunting Party,” “Shall We Dance,” and “Bee Season.” Gere’s...

The 24th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff) will present Richard Gere with the Chairman’s Award on January 5 at the Awards Gala. Presented by Cartier, the Awards Gala will be held at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Hosted by Mary Hart, the Gala will also present awards to previously announced honorees the cast of Argo, Bradley Cooper, Sally Field, Helen Hunt, Helen Mirren, Naomi Watts and Robert Zemeckis. The Festival runs January 3-14. “Throughout his career Richard Gere has established himself as an accomplished actor and producer and yet still finds time to support crucial cultural and humanitarian causes,” said Festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “Over the years we’ve seen Mr. Gere in many memorable roles, however with Arbitrage, he turns in one of his strongest career performances to date, bringing to life a hedge-fund magnate whose world is upended amid personal and professional turmoil that threatens to...

Craig here with Take Three. Today: Kim Basinger
Bay•sing•er
I think it’s time again to give Kim Basinger (remember, it's Bay-singer, not Bah-sinjahr, folks) some major credit. The lady's due. She’s gone from supporting eighties female through a love-hate (but Oscar-nabbing) nineties to her current career bloom as a character actress of some depth. Ms Basinger has always quietly impressed me. Here are three reasons why.
Take One: She loooovves purple.
Basinger’s career was birthed alongside the eighties. Feisty ladies in adventurous circumstances were her trade back then. Although through either slip-ups or fate she was often eclipsed by her male co-stars. In Never Say Never Again, The Man Who Loved Women, The Natural, Fool for Love, 9½ Weeks, No Mercy, Blind Date and Nadine she played second-fiddle female to, respectively, Connery, Reynolds, Redford, Shepard, Rourke, Gere, Willis and Bridges. These regulars of male-patterned eighties flicks...

Memorable roles in American Gigolo and An Officer And A Gentleman seem a long time ago
Allow me to favour you with a little movie list. Try to guess what they have in common and I'll meet you in paragraph two: No Mercy, Power, Miles From Home, Mr Jones, Final Analysis, Sommersby, Intersection, King David, Red Corner, The Jackal, Red Corner, The Mothman Prophecies, Unfaithful, Shall We Dance, Amelia.
I know, I know: it looks like the Razzie Winners' display at some bleak video store in the sixth circle of Hell, or perhaps the entire directorial oeuvre of Alan Smithee handily quarantined to prevent them from infecting the poor innocent DVDs on neighbouring shelves. But let me straighten you out: they all star one Richard Tiffany Gere, who can be seen this week in another of his patented misfires, Brooklyn's Finest.
