Sony Pictures’ “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis, is now playing in theaters, and much like past historical actioners like “Braveheart” or “Gladiator,” those who venture out to see the film will likely be wondering how much of it is rooted in fact.
John Boyega, Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Adrienne Warren and others star alongside Davis in the story of West African women warriors who take no husbands and serve in their positions for a lifetime to protect their nation.
Davis’ character is based on a real life historic figure named General Nanisca, and in the film she trains new recruits alongside Izogie (Lynch) and Amenza (Atim). Headstrong new recruit Nawi (Mbedu) and her peers Fumbe (Masali Baduza) and Ode (Adrienne Warren) challenge their elder superiors with new battle tactics, thoughts and principles.
So is “The Woman King” a true story? The short answer is yes,...

The white men speak in subtitled Portuguese, while the proud members of various African tribes express themselves in English in “The Woman King,” a clear sign of where our allegiances belong in director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s sweeping early-19th-century war movie. It’s an Africa-set epic of the kind not seen since “Zulu,” only this time, the task of defending the Mother Continent rightfully falls to the locals, not their enslavers. This side of the story is long overdue, recasting Western civilization’s greatest shame as the atrocity that it was while celebrating those who opposed it. Modern as that sounds, the movie embraces the codes of mid-20th-century costume dramas: It’s stirring but slightly stodgy, designed to stand the test of time.
In her fiercest role yet, Viola Davis leads an army of elite women warriors, called the Agojie, who protect the kingdom of Dahomey from outside threat.

Exclusive: French industry execs Naomi Denamur and Julie Billy are launching Paris-based independent production company June Films with a bustling film and TV slate. Scroll down for the company’s current lineup.
After meeting at Celluloid Dreams 15 years ago, the duo have been putting together their first slate over the past 18 months and are now making movies with talent including Clémence Poésy (The Tunnel), Ariane Labed (Mary Magdalene) and Hafsia Herzi (Good Mother). The idea is to be director-driven and genre agnostic and the company will leverage the duo’s extensive experience in production and international distribution to elevate the prospects for their projects. Billy previously worked at Haut et Court where she produced more than a dozen films including Cannes 2020 title Gagarine, Jonas Carpignano’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight movie A Chiara and The Night Eats The World by Dominique Rocher. Denamur is known for her work in international sales and in acquisitions for distribution companies such as Ad Vitam in France and Elastica in Spain. As a producer, the company is largely working on female-fronted French and English-language projects, but the company will also look to do co-productions with foreign directors. Both Denamur and Billy are fluent English speakers. June’s lineup includes five features as lead producer: Hafsia Herzi’s third feature, after Good Mother (Un Certain Regard 2021) and You Deserve A Lover (Critics’ Week 2019), is adapted from La Petite Dernière (The Last One) by Fatima Daas. Shooting is planned for Q2, 2023. The 2021 novel, which generated much conversation in France, charts the travails of a lesbian Muslim woman who grows up in a banlieue [suburb] outside of Paris. She not only encounters institutional racism and misogyny but must also contend with a family which wanted a son instead of a daughter. Amazons, directed by Emma Benestan (Fragiles), is an elevated genre film which will shoot in the ranches and wide open spaces of the Camargue region, exploring the world of bull racing. The three following films are being co-developed with Haut et Court:
Actress Clémence Poésy’s English-language directorial debut, co-written by Georgia Oakley (Blue Jean), is adapted from Anna Hope’s well-received novel Expectation, which was translated into 20 languages. The well-received 2019 novel charts the dreams and disappointments of a group of East London women. The film is a co-production between June, Haut et Court and Andrea Calderwood and Gail Egan’s UK banner Potboiler, whose credits include The Last King Of Scotland and The Constant Gardener.
Gagarine directors Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh’s are working with June on a French language feature which is being co-written by Amélie, I Lost My Body and Big Bug writer Guillaume Laurent; and an English-language film with a U.S. producing partner, whose details are being kept under wraps. June’s co-production slate also comprises two features which are due to shoot before year’s end:
Carlo Sironi’s second feature after Sole, produced by Giovanni Pompili, co-producer of Alcarras;
And actress Ariane Labed’s debut feature Sisters, an English-language genre film produced by The Favourite outfit Element Pictures in Ireland. The Souvenir, Mary Magdalene and The Lobster actress Labed directed short Olla which won best first fiction at Clermont-Ferrand in 2020. June is also working on TV projects. The outfit is developing a limited series, adapted from The Mythomaniac Of The Bataclan by Alexander Kauffmann (who will also co-write the series), alongside The Prayer writers Fanny Burdino and Samuel Doux. Developed alongside Studiofact, the series has already generated strong interest from potential buyers. The plot follows a woman who falsely claimed to be a victim of a terrorist attack. Billy and Denamur told us: “June brings together a family of filmmakers we’ve met over the years. We will foster the emergence of new talent, while offering a modern production model. The company aims to protect the vision of its filmmakers, while guiding them in the international market, and our line-up focuses on director-driven cinema which puts forward a diverse range of views of the world.” The continued: “The pandemic has shown that there will always be a need for new content. At a moment when streamers, studios and financiers are seeking exciting European filmmakers, our talent relationships and access to emerging voices put us in an opportune position in the market.”...

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs), essentially digital versions of physical collectibles like baseball cards, are the swag du jour for Hollywood franchises looking to gin up fan excitement.
WarnerMedia’s DC announced that will give away — for free — NFTs of comic-book covers (in three different levels of rarity) for superheroes including Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn. While Netflix draws so much awards attention each year because of its robust slate of movies from top-tier directors, it was Amazon Prime Video that actually became the first streaming platform to ever win an Oscar for a narrative feature. Back at the 2017 ceremony, Amazon won three Academy Awards — two for “Manchester by the Sea” (Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay) and one for the international feature “The Salesman.” (Netflix won its first Oscar that year for the documentary short “White Helmets.”)
Netflix has dominated the conversation in the years since — last year, the service received 24 Oscar nominations, the most for any studio — but Amazon is back again this season with a major Best Picture contender in “One Night in Miami” and several other potential nominees.
Ahead, the new movies on Amazon Prime Video in January that are serious awards contenders.

Amyra Dastur features in the upcoming multistarrer series Tandav starring Saif Ali Khan in a pivotal role. She says Saif made her feel special and that touched her, as a budding actress.
"I have worked with Saif sir in 'Kaalakaandi' and during the script reading session (of Tandav) I met him again. I was just reading my script, sitting there along with everyone, thinking Saif sir wouldn't remember me. So, I could not even say 'hello' to him. Suddenly, Saif sir, from across the table, said, 'Hey you, you were with me in 'Kaalakaandi' right, what's up? how are you?'" recalled Amyra, while opening up to Ians.
"He recognised me!! That was a starstruck moment for me! I called my mother and told her what just happened. It feels so special when someone like Saif Ali Khan, an actor of that caliber remembers you. It is special!

One Night In Miami director Regina King has said that she has no problem with British actors playing iconic U.S. characters as long as they invest in the part.
Speaking during a BAFTA Masterclass in London last night (Jan 12), King said: “If I was moved by a performance, I really don’t care where a person’s from.”
In reference to British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir, who portrays Malcolm X in her feature directorial debut, and Canadian actor Eli Goree, who portrays a young Muhammad Ali, King explained:
“As an audience member, to me they truly understood what they were doing, what they were embodying. After Kingsley’s first audition, I wanted to give him some notes. I wanted to just talk to him and get to know him and get to know what his relationship was to Malcolm. He said all the things that I needed to hear him...

To celebrate the release of One Night in Miami, the new film coming to Amazon Prime later this week, we have the pleasure of sitting down with two of its ensemble cast to chat about the already critically-acclaimed drama.
One Night in Miami is a fictional account of one incredible night where icons Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Abir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jnr), and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) gathered discussing their roles in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the 60s.
Directed by Oscar Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) and written by Kemp Powers, based on his play, One Night In Miami is a stirring, powerful and joyous film that delves into the history of America and the world, the power of dialogue and talking, the importance of democracy and a celebration of four men who helped change the world – and still are.

Roasts, in their standard form, thrive on chaos. They give speakers the green light to share the unfiltered truth of the night’s subject — or, more often, an exaggerated interpretation — leading to story after story, joke after joke, screed after screed that crosses the boundaries of accepted social mores. But, despite certain selections for Comedy Central’s (in)famous televised events, roasts typically work best when the roastee is well-liked. After all, it’s supposed to be an honor. Sure, taking a jackass to task can be fun, but there’s added excitement to peeking behind the curtain of an everyman’s gracious public image, just as there’s an added challenge for comedians to hit a not-so-easy target.
“Yearly Departed,” Amazon Prime Video’s end-of-year comedy special that says goodbye to “the year we love to hate,” is not officially a roast. It’s a wake. Speakers Tiffany Haddish,...

After a year-long wait, History Channel is finally bringing an end to its Norseman saga, “Vikings.” Except that when the historical drama premieres its final 10 episodes, they won’t be on History — but on Amazon’s Prime Video, where all the episodes will drop on Dec. 30. The A+E Networks cable channel is taking an unconventional route to close out its first scripted series on Prime Video before airing on a weekly basis on History next year. The series, which stars Alexander Ludwig, Peter Franzen and Alex Høgh Andersen, was originally set to wrap up its run with a 20-episode sixth and final season split into two parts on History Channel. The first half of the final season debuted last December. “Vikings” showrunner Michael Hirst told TheWrap that the decision was out of his hands. “Nobody told me anything about it. I was told about it as a fait accompli,” he said.

Update 9 Pm: Amazon’s Prime Video has responded to complaints on social media about technical difficulties while streaming today’s NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals.
“Our data shows that millions of Prime Video customers enjoyed a high quality and reliable streaming experience for the 49ers-Cardinals game,” a Prime Video spokesperson said in a statement. “There were reports of isolated local connectivity and broadband issues, which were unrelated to the Prime Video broadcast.”
Some of the frustration expressed by football fans online stemmed from the fact that the game was not available on TV. This marked the second time ever that the NFL gave a game’s exclusive rights to a streamer.
Deadline co-editor in chief Mike Fleming was one of those unable to watch the game. Fleming said he viewed the earlier Bucs-Lions game and late Dolphins-Raiders game, each with a pristine signal. In between,...

Polyamory is not new to the world of The Expanse. It was already established earlier in the series (and in the books) that James Holden is the child of five fathers and three mothers, each of whom contributed DNA to his genetic mix. But season 5 introduces a much stronger illustration of the future practice of polyamory among the crews of the Belter ships Dewalt and Mowteng, Drummer’s fleet of sorts. The support they provide each other, especially as Drummer mourns the loss of Klaes Ashford, is undeniably heartwarming in such a fractious time.
“We are finally seeing Drummer in a love relationship, and it happens to be a polyamorous, beautiful, queer family,” Cara Gee told us about her character in The Expanse season 5. “And I could not be more thrilled to represent that. The phenomenal actors who bring all those roles to life — I’m just so excited for the world to meet them.

If Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” had launched back in the early ’90s — when, you know, Amazon Prime Video was not a thing — the cast of the raunchy superhero series would mainly consist of “Saved by the Bell” stars, according to executive producers Eric Kripke, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
During a Wednesday Q&a introducing Amazon’s virtual FYC experience for Season 2 of “The Boys,” the trio of men behind the TV adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic series were asked to dream up leads for a pre-21st century version of their show.
“Well, Hughie (played by Jack Quaid on “The Boys”) would be Simon Pegg, that’s an easy one,” showrunner Kripke said.
“And by that logic, Nick Frost would be in there somewhere,” Goldberg added.
But when it came to the Supes of the Seven, the executive producers only had eyes for the students at Bayside High.

To celebrate the release of Uncle Frank, the new film from Oscar-winning writer Alan Ball, we sat down with some of its cast and its filmmaker to chat about the new road trip film.
Starring alongside Paul Bettany, who plays the title character, are Sophia Lillis (It) and Peter Macdissi (Six Feet Under) who play Frank’s teenage niece and partner respectively. They both chat about working with Ball and why his grasp on the human condition is so inspiring, why their characters stood out over others they have played, and the joy of working alongside Bettany for the film.
In addition, Ball told us why the timing felt right for him to direct a feature film once again, the personal echoes of the story, and the benefits that may come from the film being available to millions on Amazon Prime over the festive seasons.

Turbine is a UK-based film and television production outfit headed by “The Crown” producer Andrew Eaton, “Small Axe” producers Tracey Scoffield and David Tanner and “The Fall” producer Justin Thomson.
Under the deal, unveiled Thursday, Turbine Studios will work closely with Bron to develop, package, and produce original IP driven from the UK and Europe. Turbine will also be a strategic partner to Bron, supporting some of the company’s film and television productions across Europe.

The first trailer has dropped for Amazon's upcoming series, The Wilds, and it's one you do not want to miss.
The Wilds is billed as part survival drama, part slumber party, and that comes mighty close to the vibe the series evokes.
It's one of the most original and exciting shows coming your way in 2020.
The rest of the synopsis goes like this:
The Wilds follows a group of teen girls from different backgrounds who must fight for survival after a plane crash strands them on a deserted island.
The castaways both clash and bond as they learn more about each other, the secrets they keep, and the traumas they've all endured.
There’s just one twist to this thrilling drama… these girls did not end up on this island by accident.
The series stars industry veteran Rachel Griffiths, as well as a mix of familiar and fresh faces that include Sophia Ali,...

The Kazakh American Association condemned “Borat 2” shortly after its October release on Amazon Prime Video for subjecting the Kazakh community to “ethnicity-based humiliation,” and now the organization is calling on the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Directors Guild of America Awards, and the BAFTA Awards to disqualify the sequel from competing (via Variety). The letter is co-signed by the Hollywood Film Academy and Council on American-Islamic Relations, and accuses “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” of promoting “whitewashing, ethnic stereotyping, racism, cultural appropriation, and xenophobia.”
“The Kazakh community worldwide is underrepresented and inherently vulnerable,” the letter reads. “Our nation is still recovering from an oppressive colonial past, which is why we do not have substantial media representation. Sacha Baron Cohen understands this fact and exploits Kazakhstan by hijacking our ethnic identity, whitewashing us by portraying us as Eastern Europeans, and inciting harassment toward Kazakh people worldwide.
