So, I'm not alone?...

This show became an obsession of line along with Growing Pains. I only noticed it because of the great Theme Song. Safe at Home. If someone could find out who sang this song, it would end 30 yrs of torment for me. One of my top 5 sitcom themes!

Never saw it but ...
ferrell16 January 2015
... heard a great deal about it at the time. The girl who played Amy ... I knew her as Brenda Klemme, now Brenda James ... was the daughter of a very good friend of mine. I never saw the show because my family and I were living on a sailboat in Mexico during the time it was on the air. I was told that the pilot was picked up because Ted Turner himself saw it and was enchanted by the Amy character. A few years later my family and I all went to see "Patriot Games" and suddenly there appeared Brenda ... the redhead Harrison Ford sees in the rest room which reminds him of the redheaded terrorist. Yesterday I was watching "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and there was Brenda again jumping off the screen at me. So, there is life after "Safe at Home" for some of the actors.

I remember this series
Neek-Neek18 August 2001
I recall watching this sitcom on TBS back in the 80s as well as two other sitcoms Rocky Road and Down to Earth that also came on TBS. I don't remember all the characters but from what I do recall it's about a teenage girl portrayed by two different actresses(First by Martha Nix, then Katherine Britton) who leaves home to live with her much older brother who was an anchor man and dated his anchor woman Tatum. The character I really remember is Gary(Richard Steven Horvitz)the nerdy guy who was their co-worker. I thought he was the funniest character on that show. I will also like to point that the man's sister's name was not Amy. Amy was the name of her best friend portrayed by Brenda James. I remember her friend Amy was pretty funny to and a lot more entaintaining than the lead girl. It's a shame this was a forgettable series I liked pretty much.

The only person who watched this???
dragonphan18 January 2001
The series "Safe at Home" aired on WTBS during the daytime, and I believe that it was produced by Proctor and Gamble. There were two other series: Down To Earth, and Rocky Road that were also aired on TBS around the same time. It seems as though I am the only person to watch any of these shows.

This is what I can remember from the show....it took place in Chicago "Hello Chicago, you're gonna be my new home...Safe at Home" as mentioned in the opening theme song. There were two different girls who played the lead character Amy. From what I can remember, Amy left her mother to live with her older brother and brother in law. Later in the series, Amy had a "bad-ss" boyfriend named Ace and Amy's brother/guardian did not want her dating Ace. This storyline had similarities to Malory's relationship with Nick on Family Ties, which aired about the same time.

This series along with the other two TBS sitcoms disappeared one day and never returned to the air.

Caroline Ford
ds-036522 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Caroline Ford was the greatest TV teenager of the late 80's TV show cause she was beautiful and could hold her own against her enemies and anything else that threatened her go Caroline go and she knew what was out to stop her. like the eps were she was threatened by a ghost and another one there were bad guys out to rob the place that she was living with her brother and tried to kidnap her but she took then out before they could get her. Caroline had her own female arch-enemy who was always in the back round planing the attacks on her. the last show was a long show it was there Caroline was caught by her arch-enemy and the fight begin but Caroline came out the winner. there was another were an evil water monster that was after carlione and tried to stop her the night before and then the next day had her kidnapped by his water demons who took her to there hideout as he was to destroy her she escaped and he threatened kidnapper again and to destroy her by wetting her till she was no more. another time a boy threaten to stop her by senting a girl ghost to defeat and destroy caroline once and for all there was another were a sex-pot girl sented a monster to bite and claw and fight caroline the monster was made from caroline's watch and know her weakness. the final show was a very long one it was how caroline was caught and then put on trail and then her final fight with her archenemy and her monsters the first monster that she fought was the deer girl who threaten caroline by biting and clawing her to nothing caroline throw her deadly foe in to a wall stopping the monster from defeating her the monster was fire monster that was meant to burn caroline to nothing so the teen heroine throw a palet of water at at her deadly burning foe

sort of, but not quite...

the lead character was actually caroline, not amy. amy was the redhead who lived in dan's building and immediately became close friends with caroline. iirc, caroline moved in with dan after their parents died. the premise was how he dealt with suddenly having a teenager living with him.

roger was the obnoxious neighbor, tatum was the anchor on dan's news show (he was a sports reporter) and gary was...something. i really don't recall exactly what gary's job was at the tv station, but it was something along the lines of gopher/lackey. i think he was the nephew or grandson of the big boss.

the episode that always sticks out in my mind is the "gilligan's island" fantasy where gary hit his head and dreamed that everyone in his life was a character on GI.

it was actually a really good show for what it was.

The pillows on the sofa were my favorite kind to sit on!
dsyelp27 July 2021
I know this sounds goofy but the pillows on the sofa that was on this show (the living room scenes) were my favorite kind to sit on!... They were big and comfy! One of my girlfriends had those type of pillows and I sat on 3 of them all at once (sat on the whole mound, 3 pillows stacked on one another) at her apartment and she actually thought that was pretty cute. I made a pretty big dent on the top pillow (the one I was sitting directly on) and she didn't mind at all; she told me that it only means that the pillows were used.

The other thing I liked about this show was that it had a lot of good looking girls. Amy (Brenda Lynn Klemme) was my favorite!... She also turned me on when she was sitting on one of the pillows!

You're not the only one...
LisAnnT4 June 2002
She was from Peoria, and she moved into Chicago to live with her brother who was a sportscaster and an ex-Chicago Bears football player. This was so she could go to a special high school of performing arts where I believe she played the cello. Her best friend (with the long curly red hair) lived in the same building and went to her school. I think she was a dancer and quite boy-crazy. Her brother had an old football pal who was always hanging around who had probably been tackled a few too many times. The brother also had a girlfriend who I believe he eventually married. I can picture their apartment. Right now, that's what I remember about the show. You're right, all three shows just disappeared.

Thank God I'm not the only one......

I was CRAZY obsessed about this show and never missed an episode. I remember it used to be on with those other two syndicated TBS sitcoms, Down to Earth and Rocky Road, and then one day POOF! They all three disappeared into thin air and were never heard of/mentioned again. I was heartbroken. Before any of you think that I don't have a life, keep in mind that I was about 9 or 10 at the time. I always harbored a secret hope that eventually some other station would air them in syndication or that TBS would show the re-runs at some god-forbidden hour (like 4 a.m. after infomercials), but alas, I haven't come across anything. I'd kill to see re-runs, although I'm sure the passage of time has made this show much more memorable than it ever had the right to be.

I do have to disagree on a few points, however. I found Caroline to be a bit of a one-dimensional character with little personality, so I would definitely quibble with the Grace Manning comparison from O&A. I agree with the person who said that her loony sex-pot friend Amy was ten times more amusing. I also thought the show went down the toilet after they re-cast the lead and added that pain in the ass sidekick Dokie Petersen (I think that was his name). I never saw any of the actors again either, except I remember Gary VanSickle was in Summer School (classic flick). I think the actor probably lost out on most of the '80's token dork roles to Anthony Michael Hall and disappeared into oblivion or something.

Also, I'm almost POSITIVE that this show aired before 1986. I clearly remember being in 3rd grade when it was on the air, which would have put it in either 1984 or 85.

Alright, enough reminiscing. I sincerely hope someone else responds to this. I know this show was pretty forgettable, but it would be kinda cool to get a little forum/discussion going.

Caroline Ford Vs Grace Maning
PennyGadget10 July 2002
Caroline Ford was the most precious heroine of a 1980's tv show because she was a girl before her time she could of fought any boy, girl, ghost, or monster that tryed to hurt her. On the other hand there's Grace Maning the Caroline Ford of the late 1990's tv show but she more cute then Caroline. Oh I wish that there was a web site to Caroline Ford.
