Joss Ackland and Claire Bloom also both appear in Queenie (1987), Mad Dogs and Englishmen (1995), Tales from the Madhouse (2000), and notably provide voices in the animated film The Princess and the Goblin (1991), based on the novel by George MacDonald. C.S. Lewis was greatly influenced by MacDonald's fantasy writings and spiritual insights.
Writer William Nicholson later adapted his TV-movie for the stage. "Shadowlands" premiered in 1989 in the West End and in 1990 on Broadway. The success of the stage play lead to it being adapted again by Nicholson for a feature film: Shadowlands (1993).
C.S. Lewis was a friend of fellow professor and writer J.R.R. Tolkien. Cast member Philip Stone appeared in the animated film The Lord of the Rings in the role of Theoden. Richard Attenborough's cinematic adaptation of this story featured two other actors from Lord of the Rings adaptations: cast members Andrew Seear and Peter Howell had played Faramir and Theoden in the BBC Radio drama. Attenborough had also previously directed Gandhi, which featured Nigel Hawthorne and Bernard Hill. Hawthorne played Lewis in the stage adaptation of this teleplay, while Hill appeared in Peter Jackson's film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings.
