- To salve his guilty conscience, an elder brother removes his disturbed younger sibling from a mental institution after a suicide attempt, and tries to bring him back to mental competency through one on one contact. Free of the institution, he continues to be haunted by dreams of a lost twin, and chants the eerie phrase "Do I stand before the King?" - After the third attempt of suicide of Laurence (Julian Sands), his older brother Peter (Sir John Hurt) decides to take him out of the mental institution and take care of him. Peter rents an old apartment in an empty building and leaves his wife and daughter to take care of his brother. Laurence is an insecure man that is haunted by the death of his twin brother Jan that drowned in soft sand on the beach.
