Exclusive: After successfully launching the Extraction film franchise at Netflix, director Sam Hargrave has his eyes set on another potential franchise with a piece of IP that is revving its engines to get out the gate. Sources tell Deadline that Skydance and Mattel Films have closed a deal with Hargrave to direct a live-action movie based on Matchbox, Mattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line. David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper are penning the script.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films. The project will be shepherded by Aimee Rivera for Skydance and Elizabeth Bassin and Andrew Scannell for Mattel Films.
The iconic Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire premiered on March 29, 2024, as the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. The movie received mixed reviews from critics and is one of the installments with the lowest score, but fans are amazed, as the movie became a box office hit! The movie was directed by Adam Wingard, whom we have recently talked about as the potential director of a live-action ThunderCats movie, which was rumored to be the director’s next project, following Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. But, as the most recent reports confirm, Wingard’s next project won’t be the planned ThunderCats movie, but it won’t be a sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire either.
Namely, as it has been confirmed, Adam Wingard has accepted to direct an action movie, Onslaught, for A24, as the indie production company is moving up in the movie world, becoming...

Adam Wingard will reteam with the writer of You’re Next and The Guest. to tackle action thriller Onslaught before he heads back to the Monsterverse.
Adam Wingard has signed up to direct Onslaught, an action thriller that is being backed by A24.
It was back in October that we first learned that the arthouse independent studio was broadening its horizons and looking to start backing more mainstream action projects. As far as that tactic foes, we’re starting to see that approach materialise, not least with Onslaught. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio found itself on the right end of a bidding war for Onslaught, a film that is being described as a ‘gonzo action horror thriller.’
Beyond that brief description, little else is known about the project, with details being kept firmly under wraps. Still though, getting Wingard represents something of a coup for A24, given the...

Face/Off 2 has been on the cards for years – and now it looks as though Nicolas Cage and John Travolta might be back.
Face/Off remains as one of the most high-concept action movies of the 1990s – no small feat considering this was an era when the genre was stuffed to the gills with interesting and inventive movies trying to reframe explosions, fisticuffs and gunfights in new and unique ways.
The first film (in which Nicolas Cage starred opposite John Travolta) remains a stone-cold action classic to this day with its bizarre ‘face switching’ premise only furthering to distinguish it from the deluge of other brilliant haction movies from the same era.
Over the last three or four years, talk has circulated that a sequel to Face/Off is on the cards. John Woo wouldn’t be returning and the film would instead be helmed by Adam Wingard. Wingard’s latest action blockbuster,...

Another weekend, another win for "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The latest entry in the MonsterVerse franchise dipped nearly 61% in its second weekend for a $31.2 million domestic haul. Even with the relatively heavy dip after the movie's impressive opening weekend, it was more than enough to top newcomers "Monkey Man" ($10.1 million) and "The First Omen" ($8.3 million). More importantly, it demonstrated that this franchise is arguably stronger than it's ever been a full decade into its run. Allow me to explain why that is.
Even though it has been in theaters for less than two full weeks, director Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong" has now made $134.5 million domestically to date. That puts it above the total domestic grosses for both 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" ($100.9 million) and 2019's "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" ($110.5 million). It's still below 2014's "Godzilla" ($200.6 million) and 2017's "Kong: Skull Island" ($168 million), but that's only for the time being.

"Toonami" debuted on the Cartoon Network in 1997, back when the network was just hitting its stride. Cartoon Network debuted in 1992, and originally offered mostly old animated reruns. It was, for years, the best place to find old Droopy cartoons, as well as Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry cartoons, old DC superhero fare, and reruns of Hanna-Barbera trash like "Scooby-Doo" and "The Flintstones."
In 1994, the network had the brilliant idea to repurpose a largely forgotten Hanna-Barbera character named Space Ghost, transforming him into a talk show host. "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" set a new dadaist tone for the Cartoon Network, proving that it could make hip, self-aware, original content in addition to its blocks of reruns. In 1996 and 1997, Cartoon Network launched a quartet of new shows -- "Dexter's Laboratory," "Johnny Bravo," "The Powerpuff Girls," and "Cow and Chicken" -- and their reputation was solidified. It was now a destination station.

Invincible Season 2 Episode 8 referred to one of the earliest jokes in the series, one concerning a certain archeologist with a beetle tattoo, who gets buried in the sand because Mark summons a sandstorm by flying too low.
This occurred way back in Episode 4 of Season 1. Episode 8 of Season 2 had Chloe Bennet (Quake from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) play a companion to the daughter of this archeologist. Bennet’s character was called Riley, while the archeologist’s daughter, voiced by Ella Purnell (of Arcane fame), was called Jane.

“ThunderCats”, the 130-episode, 1985 cartoon series will be adapted into a live-action sword ‘n sorcery feature, to be directed by Adam Wingard (“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”):
“…’ThunderCats’ follows the adventures of a team of heroic, cat-like humanoid aliens on a planet called ‘Third Earth’. The series plot begins with the dying planet ‘Thundera’ meeting its end, forcing the ThunderCats to flee their homeworld…”
"My version is going to be 100% the ’80’s version”, said Wingard about the new film.
"When I was in high school, I was so into ‘Thundercats’ that I wrote this 270-something-page screenplay, like hand-written screenplay on it. It was my biggest dream growing up, to make a Thundercat’s movie, and so, here I am with the ability to actually do that. I’m still kind of fulfilling that dream."

Thundercats is a property that might seem obscure to a lot of people today, given that it only had a short-lived revival in 2011 before the show was turned into something like Teen Titans Go in the form of Thundercats Roar. However, for those who remember the original 80’s animated series, or even its 2011 revival, Thundercats holds a special place in their heart. And now, it seems a Thundercats live-action film might finally see the light of day.

Adam Wingard has always had a flair for the most ultra-vibrant and loud segments of the color spectrum. Growing up in the ’80s, the golden age of movie tie-in merchandise, the director vividly remembers the neon palette, the yellows, blues, and reds of seemingly every toy from “Transformers” to “Thundercats” to even just “the mellow yellow NASCAR” from “Days of Thunder.” Bold visuals and bright colors were a staple of “Godzilla vs.

The ThunderCats are one of the most beloved 1980s animated series for many fans around the world and the series has become a proper cult classic among fans of 80s television. After the original series ended in 1988, there have been two animated revivals, but the original series still remains the best for many fans. In light of this, it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that the series has long been listed as a potential candidate for a live-action adaptation and as it seems now, the movie is still on track.
Plans for a live-action ThunderCats movie emerged as early as 2007 and as of 2024, the movie has yet to be produced, but Warner Bros. has seemingly been developing the project more actively since 2021, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard set to direct. Three years ago, back when director Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong was released, it was announced that the filmmaker would be making a movie based on the classic animated series ThunderCats (which originally ran from 1985 to 1989), with his approach being to make it a live action / CGI animation hybrid, as he couldn’t imagine hiring actors to just play the ThunderCats in makeup. Then Wingard got caught up in the production of Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire, which is set to reach theatres on March 29th – but during an interview with io9, he confirmed that he hasn’t left the ThunderCats behind. That project is still in active development.
Wingard said, “Simon [Barrett] and I are still actively working on the script. We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production on [Godzilla x Kong] and we just had to put everything on hold. [But] right now we...

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard has revealed that his take on the beloved 1980s cartoon Thundercats is still being developed – one of several high-profile projects he’s attached to.
Adam Wingard is out and about doing the press rounds for Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire which releases here in the UK at the end of this week (29th March). Naturally, one of the questions that Wingard has faced regards the order of his upcoming slate, given that he’s got quite a list of projects to cherry-pick from.
Taking a glance at the projects that Wingard has been publicly attached to over the last couple of years reads like a wish-list for any blockbuster filmmaker with a penchant for action. There’s Thundercats, a long-gestating take on the humanoid warrior cats that were so popular in animated form during the 1980s; there’s a sequel to Face/Off,...

Dynamite Entertainment’s “ThunderCats” #1, available February 7, 2024, is written by Declan Shalvey and illustrated by Drew Moss, with covers by David Nakayama, Lucio Parrillo, Shalvey, Jae Lee, June Chung and Ivan Tao:
“…fleeing through space to escape their dying home world, the ‘ThunderCats’ were attacked en route by their mortal enemies, the ‘Mutants of Plun-Darr’.
“After diverting their damaged flagship to a planet called ‘Third Earth’, the surviving ThunderCats now strive to rebuild their society in harmony with the new world’s natives. But the Mutants, determined to possess the ThunderCats' mystical gem, the ‘Eye of Thundera’, have tracked them down — and they've also forged an alliance with evil‘Mumm-Ra’.
“Now the ThunderCats, led by an inexperienced ‘Lion-o’, must band together as never before to protect their legacy from this combined enemy. But will they be able to withstand the onslaught of Mumm-Ra the ‘Ever-Living’, once he sets his eyes upon them?...

Japanese production company and "Godzilla" creator Toho typically makes two types of films about the King of the Monsters. There are the ones where the G-man functions as a metaphor for the horrors of the atomic bombing of Japan and the lingering scars of war (like in "Godzilla Minus One"). Then there are the movies where Godzilla is a glorified bouncer whose job is to slap around any trouble-making kaiju that gets it into their head to wreak havoc on humanity.
Director Gareth Edward's 2014 U.S. "Godzilla" was different in that sense, presenting Godzilla as a misunderstood force of nature while also portraying him and other giant creatures as an allegory for climate change. The next two entries in what's now known as the MonsterVerse, "Kong: Skull Island" and "Godzilla: King of the Monsters," followed suit before culminating with the monster jam that was director Adam Wingard's "Godzilla vs. Kong.

No one was expecting "Godzilla Minus One" to tear through the big screen with as much ferocity and box office success as it has. The film from director Takashi Yamazaki just became the highest grossing Japanese "Godzilla" movie ever (not accounting for inflation), and it's been a hit with critics and audiences, too. With the rise of the streaming era and the dominance of social media came a keener awareness of if — and when — your new favorite show is going to get the axe. But knowing the end is coming doesn't make it hurt less. In fact, there's a growing resentment around shows that clearly have a fanbase, but that don't pull in subscribers in large enough numbers to satisfy executives. After the fates of Netflix's "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance" and AMC's "Moonhaven," which was killed after a promising early renewal, we're having more trouble falling in love with new shows than ever before.
But there's something even worse than a brief fling with a great new series: getting a glimpse of one, and then never being able to watch any of it at all. It's tough for any new show, especially high-budget science fiction series, to get out of pilot episode limbo,...

Jules Bass, one half of the legendary animation team Rankin/Bass, has died. He was 87.
Jules Bass’ career is forever linked to Arthur Rankin Jr.–which certainly isn’t a bad thing, since the duo played major roles in creating some of the most iconic Christmas movies ever.

Muhammad Kilau bin Rasu, popularly know as ‘Mat Kilau’, or alternatively known as Mohamed bin Ibrahim or ‘Mat Siam’, was a local chieftain and folk hero from Pahang, Malaysia, best known for his role in the Pahang Uprising (1891-1895) against the British Empire. The exceptional valor demonstrated by Mat Kilau in the uprising have gained him a place in popular memory as one of the heroes of Malay nationalism. Syamsul Yusof directs a martial arts film based on the historical character, in a movie that is as one-sided as all the recent action movies we have seen throughout the world, from “Top Gun” to “Wolf Warrior”.
The film begins in 1890 in Pahang, as the British arrive in the area. Their greed, their violent ways, and their will to disrupt the Islamic ways of the locals become evident from the introductory scene, which ends up in bloody violence as...

The sequel to last year’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” is about to go into production and it has now found its human lead: Dan Stevens, from “Downton Abbey” and Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” remake, according to an insider with knowledge of the project. The “Godzilla vs. Kong” sequel will reunite the actor with Adam Wingard, who directed Stevens in the devilish 2014 thriller “The Guest,” which become something of a cult classic in the years since its release.
Details for the “Godzilla vs. Kong” sequel are scarce, although it will assuredly bring back both Kong, who at the end of last year’s movie assumed his rightful place as King of Hollow Earth; and Godzilla, who slunk back into the ocean ready to destroy peaceful cities or save the planet (whatever comes up first). Together, Godzilla and Kong defeated the evil Mechagodzilla.

Dominique Fishback holds her own opposite Samuel L. Jackson in Apple TV+’s “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,” and she says that was inspired by the strength of the character. “I wasn’t really nervous because Robyn is not nervous of Ptolemy,” she tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “She’s not intimidated by him. So therefore, I’m not gonna do that because I’m representing this character.”
On this edition of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Fishback talks about “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,” and working with Jackson, as well as her take on the character, playing teenage roles even as she enters her 30s, her interest in astrology and how she’s enjoying her success. Later in this episode, “Mr. Mayor” star Bobby Moynihan on the joys of his ensemble comedy, which sadly was just canceled on Thursday as this episode made it to air.

I nearly missed this one on the schedules, which would have been a shame. This is one of those books that a few years ago would only have existed in the minds of two fanboys. We had a few years with some odd couple pairings, though do you (want to) remember them? Superman and Tarzan? Batman and Punisher? Predator and, er, Archie Andrews? Well, I do, I’ve still got the lot, for my sins. The appetite for these ran out a while ago, so to see such a great mash-up as this is good news indeed. To be fair to Freddie Williams, he’s usually sniffing around when there’s a good team-up to be had, he’s got a lot of Ninja Turtles, He-Man, and Thundercats in the rear mirror, so this book was a natural.

True to its portmanteau name, Toonami has brought a wave of Japanese animation to America in the 25 years since it started as a daytime segment of the Cartoon Network schedule. Toonami launched on March 17, 1997, with episodes of Thundercats, Cartoon Roulette, Voltron, and The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest. Before long, however, anime started taking over the lineup, getting U.S. audiences hooked on shows like Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. Cartoon Network took Toonami off the air in 2008, but Adult Swim resurrected the brand in 2012, and it’s been going strong on Saturday nights ever since. Here are some highlights from the past two and a half decades of Toonami programming. Attack on Titan In this series, the human hero Eren Jaeger joins the elite Survey Corps to fight the Titans after one of the titular giants attacks his hometown and kills his mother, the war between the species ending a century of peace.

Now that anything goes in Marvel and DC’s extended cinematic universes, how long before the barminess of the comic-book blockbuster starts to get boring?
The Multiverse – or should that be Multiverses, as there are now Marvel and DC versions? – is clearly a good thing for superhero movies. Just as naysayers had begun to suggest comic book flicks might have exhausted all their vim and verve, along comes Spider-Man: No Way Home, a movie that uses the introduction of alternate realities to restore characters such as Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin and original wall-crawler Tobey Maguire with all the wide-eyed enthusiasm of a nine-year-old who’s just realised he can have He-Man and Jabba the Hutt battling a team comprising Snarf from the Thundercats and the Care Bears?

Bringing back He-Man and the Master of the Universe was always a no brainer. The original cartoon, which ran for just two years back in mid 80s, while massively derivative was also massively influential. Netflix had already hit creative paydirt with its Anime-influenced She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, the smart, overtly queer, rainbow-filled delight that wrapped up its run in 2020.
Bringing Adora’s super-swole brother back was an obvious move. That Kevin Smith was at the helm, promising a direct follow up to the old cartoons and featuring barely-messed-with character designs, only sharpened the excitement.
He-Man, of course, has been rebooted before – three times, in fact, if you count the 1987 live action film – and never especially successfully. Those previous versions, as with She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, were specifically designed to take the frame of the original story and drape a more up-to-date adventure for modern kids over it.

Thunder…thunder…thunder! Thundercats…well, you know how it goes. The Thundercats are part of the discussion now since it’s been established that they should be coming up with their own movie at this point. But back in the day, this was one of the most popular cartoons around, at least for a little bit. The MonsterVerse lives! Not even a year ago it seemed likely that Godzilla vs. Kong would end up being the final bout in the series of movies that launched back in 2014 with Godzilla. But the surprisingly robust box office success of the titanic prize fight — $407 million at the worldwide box office and counting after four weeks, even with the movie being offered for free until the end of this month on HBO Max — has led Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures to believe there’s still lots of life in this shared universe…. including a possible Son of Kong movie?!
According to THR, talks recently commenced with Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard about coming back for a fifth entry in the series. That would make Wingard the first director to helm a second film in the franchise, with all the others until now basically one-and-done efforts. There’s no timetable...

After the massively successful debut of “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the film’s director, Adam Wingard, is in talks for a new movie in Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise.
Since its launch in theaters on March 31, “Godzilla vs. Kong” has topped $400 million at the box office, marking the highest grossing release of the pandemic era. The film debuted simultaneously on HBO Max, as part of Warner Bros.’ multi-platform release strategy for the studio’s 2021 slate.
In 2014, Legendary kicked off their MonsterVerse plans, after partnering with Japan’s Toho Studios for 2014’s “Godzilla.” “Godzilla Vs. Adam Wingard’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” has already proven to be the biggest box office success of the current pandemic era. For the 38-year-old filmmaker, it’s a radical new chapter after his initial foray into the studio arena, when the response to his 2016 Lionsgate-backed “The Blair Witch Project” sequel left Wingard uncertain if he’d make another studio movie again.
The found footage project wasn’t a total bust — “Blair Witch” made a healthy $45 million compared to its $5 million budget — but it wasn’t the cash cow Lionsgate anticipated after the massive success of the original film. After its disappointing first weekend and mostly tepid reviews, Wingard and writer and frequent collaborator Simon Barrett took to Twitter to lament the film’s chilly reception, with some cheeky jabs at the weekend’s big winner, Clint Eastwood’s Tom Hanks-starring “Sully.” Wingard first tweeted, “Ya win some. ThunderCats are on the mov(i)e! After years of false starts and announcements that didn’t go anywhere, it seems that the beloved ‘80s cartoon has a giant sized champion behind it. Adam Wingard, director of Godzilla vs. Kong, is working on a ThunderCats film that will be a hybrid live action/CGI movie. Wingard will direct the ThunderCats movie and co-write the script with Simon Barrett.
This raises a lot of questions about the film, especially considering the recent flux in ThunderCats media. The original ThunderCats was about as perfect an example of ‘80s action adventure cartoon series can be and the early 2010s reboot series took a mostly serious approach to the franchise with a more deeply layered story. Then in 2020 ThunderCats Roar was a huge departure, featuring a much more comedic tone and style than the previous series.
