One of the finest television pilots you'll ever see
DVD_Connoisseur23 February 2007
The two-part story, "Brother's Keeper", is an excellent introduction to "Miami Vice". Often screened as a feature length episode, this pilot introduced "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs to the world and changed forever the expectations people would have of television. "Brother's Keeper" has feature film production values, a great cast (including a young Jimmy Smits), a splendid soundtrack and a sizzling script.

Don Johnson's performance as Crockett is flawless. Every scene with this actor is excellent. Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs is the perfect sidekick and the chemistry between the two characters is a key factor to what makes the series so memorable.

This pilot has an appearance by Martin Ferrero as Trini DeSoto. Ferrero was later to become a regular in the show, as informer (and light relief) Izzy Moreno.

No matter how many times I watch this pilot, I can't help feel the original '80s vibe and excitement as Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" accompanies the high-speed night-time action. This is television that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Dramatic, gripping, witty and sexy, "Miami Vice" remains perfect television.

8 out of 10. A great pilot but the best was yet to come.

A fine introduction to the series that was the epitome of '80s cool
Tweekums7 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When Miami Vice began it wasn't just a TV show it was an event; everything about the show seemed cool; fast cars, fast boats, beautiful women and stylish casual suits. This opening episode introduced us to all the key characters the main two being Sonny Crockett, the Miami cop who has just lost his partner and Richard Tubbs, a New York cop who has headed South to catch his brother's killer. They meet when Tubbs meets with Crockett to buy drugs; neither realising that the other is a cop! After that misunderstanding is sorted out they work together to find the murdering drug dealer, Calderone AKA The Columbian. It won't be easy though as Calderone is always one step ahead of the police due to the presence of a mole within the police department.

While it obviously isn't as fresh today as it was then 'Miami Vice' is still very cool and very stylish; this is largely down to the look of the show; lots of pastel shades, jackets worn over T-shirts and shoes worn without sock and a great sound track; mostly music composed for the show by Jam Hammer but also plenty of contemporary hits such as Phil Collins 'In the Air Tonight' which turned what could have been a boring driving scene into something really cool that set the atmosphere for the show.

Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas were great as Crockett and Tubbs; roles that will almost certainly define their careers. Martin Ferrero who will become a series regular as light relief character Izzy appears here as a different character, killer Trini DeSoto, he was entertaining in the role so I can see why the creators wanted to keep him in the show despite his character's death! One thing that does seem surprising watching it in 2012; back when it first aired in the UK the BBC cut it for violence yet people in pale suits get machine-gunned without showing any blood!

Brother's Keeper
Prismark1019 August 2021
Sometimes a show comes along and you sense it's a game changer.

In the early 1980s. Hill Street Blues stood out from the crowd of episodic television. The lives of the characters developed throughout the series. There was no reset at the end of the episode.

In the early 1990s. Twin Peaks bought a new kind of storytelling. A world away from glamour soaps of Dynasty and Dallas. This was a community filled with working class people and power players. The central story was a murder mystery.

In between these two shows came Miami Vice. Dubbed MTV cops. Once it emerged in the television landscape. Just about every episodic television show in America had to copy it. All of sudden, rock music was blaring out from the speakers of your television set whether you were watching Hunter, The Fall Guy or Street Hawk.

Looking back at the first story. The songs varied a lot, you had cheesy Cyndi Lauper and later a magnificent moody use of Phil Collins 'In the Air Tonight' intercut with Crockett and Tubbs driving in the Miami night.

Miami Vice was not just about songs and music. The visuals was important. From the pastel coloured costumes, Don Johnson's designer stubble and the use of real life Miami locations.

This was enhanced with the way lighting was used for the night shoots. Then there was the use of violence. In the opener it was rather tame compared to later episodes.

New York cop Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) is after a Columbian drug kingpin called Calderone who killed his brother, also a cop.

Tubbs has come to Miami to find Calderone. He comes across Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) who is undercover. He has just lost his partner and finds that there might be corruption in his department.

Crockett and Tubbs reluctantly team up. Not before finding out that they have not been entirely truthful to each other. Crockett is a good cop with a messy family life. He lives in a boat with an alligator named Elvis.

Michael Mann the Executive Producer of the show was instrumental in the way this looked. It was very cinematic. The pilot has Jimmy Smits and Mykelti Williamson in small roles.

In-your-face entertainment.

This pilot episode for the popular "Miami Vice" series is a great window into the long-lasting series. It has all the facets that have made the series so popular: trendy pastels, rapid editing, popular music, synthesizer scoring, Tubbs and Crockett banter and good ol' fashioned violence. The subject matter is gritty, but its presentation slick, and that combination works to make "Miami Vice" an undeniably entertaining series from an aesthetic standpoint. The film is given heart by its two leads, Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, which make this more than just an hour and a half MTV spot.

For those who missed this great TV series, this pilot is the perfect place to start!

A stellar debut
Mr-Fusion10 March 2015
It has all the establishing elements of any self-respecting pilot, but "Brother's Keeper" works best as a TV movie, and a fairly explosive on at that. Crockett and Tubbs, two cops with clashing styles forced to work together to bring down a drug kingpin. It's a tenuous partnership and an uncertain start to such a smooth and glossy TV series, but it fits in the context of a great cop story.

But no matter how you look at it, this is great television. It's brimming with macho dialogue, pulses with energy, and it's one of my favorite episodes of the show. The high fashion, shootouts, car/boat chases, they're all here in fine "Miami Vice" form. Not only that, but it features Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight", which might be the show's greatest MTV segment.

This is highly watchable stuff.

Seminal television
Fluke_Skywalker8 September 2015
If we're lucky, we get to witness a game changing moment in popular culture. The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. May 25th, 1977. The debut of MTV. Another one of those moments was September 16th, 1984. That was when Miami Vice debuted on NBC. With a blend of exceedingly high production values and MTV-era attitude, it not only became an instant hit, it forever changed the face of prime time TV.

The pilot movie "Brother's Keeper" is a slam-bang opener, perfectly setting up the characters and the premise and wrapping it up in a package that was light years ahead of anyone else at the time. For a show that was fueled so strongly by the zeitgeist of that moment in time, this first episode holds up exceptionally well 30+ years later.

Miami Vice:Brother's Keeper
Scarecrow-885 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Ricardo Tubbs(..the ever smooth and cool Philip Michael Thomas), a cop in New York, traces a Colombian crimelord to Miami(..his brother was murdered by this man's gun-toting henchmen after a transfer of dope money, interfering with their drug sting)where the city's undercover detective Crockett(Don Johnson) has been attempting to catch him as well. Neither know the other is after the same man, both seeking revenge for the murder of a partner(..Crocket's partner was collateral damage when a drug dealer they were playing, having decided to go out on his own, was blown up with a bomb strapped under his truck). Well, Crocket doesn't necessarily carry the same kind of vendetta as Tubbs, he has been working incredibly hard to take this drug-lord down. Tubbs has information for Crockett and his Miami Vice squad, the crimelord's name is Calderone(Miguel Pinero) and his lieutenant, who sets up the drug deals, is named Trini DeSoto(Martin Ferrero). Every time it seems that Crockett gets close to Calderone, somehow he remains one step ahead. Tubbs thinks there's a cop on Calderone's payroll giving him inside information.

No doubt this show not influenced television but movies after it's debut on network television. Normally the show featured Tubbs and Crockett going undercover to take down giant drug cartels, traffickers, and dealers corrupting the Miami streets. This pilot establishes that Crockett is divorced from a woman he still loves, and how life as an undercover cop isn't exactly life-fulfilling. We also see how Crockett and Tubbs' relationship got off to a rocky start, but the groundwork is laid where it's easy to realize how good they work together. Crockett has a pet alligator, was a star football star, and takes his job as a cop very seriously. It's always neat seeing actors we know in early work on Miami Vice such as Jimmy Smits as the partner(..with a pregnant wife)who is killed by the car bomb, and especially Mykelti Williamson, with a Jeri-curl, as a small time drug dealing partner with Calderone. Ferrero is a hoot as a flamboyant, unflappable Cuban "arranger"(..the one who negotiates deals between a new party and Calderone), in well tailored suits(..very Scarface in how he talks)who very much enjoys the life of a criminal living large thanks to his career. Plenty of style, Miami atmosphere, cop melodramatics, rockin' Jan Hammer musical arrangements, 80's pop, and attitude to spare.

Crockett has a potential love interest in detective Gina Calabrese(Saundra Santiago), but it's a bit dodgy due to his broken marriage. Bill Smitrovich is Crockett's former partner, Scott Wheeler, now with the DEA, and there's an important development/revelation that will forever fracture their long-time camaraderie. Very much, Miami Vice is a product of it's time, with plenty of sweet cars and hot women, lots of beach and sand, streets and crime..my kind of show. Thomas' Jamaican accent(..his undercover role is a Jamaican with ties to a criminal organization in New York)is rather amusing, as is his work opposite Crockett's alligator. I don't know what it is, but I have always admired the Crockett style, the white coat and pants, colorful T-shirt, and designer shoes, he's no ordinary undercover detective, that's for sure.

Amazing, unmissable and brilliant
Pilgrim57410 September 2005
Miami Vice was a brilliant TV Series with great acting from Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas. Great story lines and amazing scenery, like Crockett's Ferrari Daytona. From Drug Lord's to Porn King. Crockett and Tubbs will get there criminals. Whether by boat, car or any other way you could think of. Sometimes it gets personal but their still professional. With Boat races, car chases, beach babes, shootouts and the best views Miami has to offer.

Miami Vice Also shows the fragility of life. With life, death, love, honour and friendships tested in the mind boggling adventures of Sonny Crockett and Raphael Tubbs

This is the made-for-tv pilot for Miami Vice, a cop show which made popular chain smoking and wearing shiny suits without socks.

The pilot begins with a flashback, explaining that New York cop Ricardo Tubbs (Phillip Michael Thomas) comes to Miami seeking revenge of the "Columbian," a drug czar which becomes the man behind many of the Miami DEA's investigations and the guy responsible for killing Tubb's brother. Soon to becomes his partner is Maimi Vice undercover cop, Sonny Crockett (the gorgeous Don Johnson), an honest cop with a collection of badass sports cars and an alligator named Elvis. In the pilot, Tubb's and Crockett's on-going investigation into tracking down the Columbian exposes inter-agency corruption. Even if you have not seen the series, this is a good movie in itself as a just a cop/crime/mystery movie. It's harmless 80s fun.

This marked the beginning of a popular television show that lasted five years (1984 to 1989). Unfortunately, the second Miami Vice movie, Miami Vice II: The Prodigal Son (actually it was just a collection of the shows) which takes place in New York (and this second movie model the scenes for Glenn Frey's "You Belong to the City," which appears on the Miami Vice soundtrack and Frey made a few appearances as well).

The Best pilot ever made
ivo-cobra83 August 2007
Miami Vice the pilot Brother's Keeper is probably the best episode in TV series, here it's all begin, how Sonny and Rico meet, the opening main title, everything. Here we meet Sonny,Ricardo,Gina,Trudy,Lt.Lou Rodriguez,Calderone how it begin's,everything. The story begins, were Sonny works undercover to find Columbian drug lord, but somebody blows up the car and kill's Sonny's friends,Eddie and Corky,so he try to move on,in meantime Ricardo Tubbs comes to Miami,to find Columbian drug lord Calderone who kills three week's earlier his brother Rafael, later Crockett and Tubbs they meet by there meeting, but when cops come's,Tubbs runs away with his speed boat,so Sonny chase him with his car and he jump on his boat, and he fought's with him, later he find's that he's a cop from New York, later they become partners and they go both against the same guy,on the end they find the lick in there apartment and on the end became a showdown with Calderone's men but before this, when they were ready was great soundtrack performed by Phil Collins:In The Air Tonight,on the end they get Calderone, but some judge bail's him out from jail,so he escapes with his airplane,so Crockett and Tubbs go empty, then ends the show.I'can say only one thing, probably the best pilot in the first season in Miami Vice.

It has aged well
huineman5 October 2023
The pilot to Miami Vice looks cool after almost 40 years. Everything being shot on location, superbly edited, with those very nice cars and boats (car and boat chase is a classic), great music that has become iconic (including all the songs), the ultra-tacky clothing (man!)...

Sonny Crockett is the initial downside to the pilot as he begins as a total cliché: a bombastic, egotistical, misogynistic, self-centered, violent and corny cop; but being surrounded (in the 80s, let's not forget) by a black buddy, a latino boss and an alligator pet, there's hope in the horizon for him to change, and that was left open but well-hinted in this episode.

Pilot Crash
ThunderKing617 October 2019
(Why can the protagonists kill henchmen but never can kill the main antagonist?)

This was a weak and unenthused episode and pilot. It had so much potential up until the 2 cops joined forces.

Tubbs started off badass and as soon as he joined forces with Crockett he became a whimp. Throughout there was boring dialogue scenes and subpar action.

The ending scenes were just poor execution.

I may have skipped 2 or 3 series in my lifetime mid through and Miami Vice could be the next to go.

Crockett and Tubbs excellent debut
amesmonde22 July 2013
A New York street cop goes to Miami to take down a murderous head of a drug cartel. Meanwhile, after an undercover operation goes wrong a Miami Vice detective finds himself after the same perp'.

Episode 1 of the atmospheric, gritty yet pastel cop show, Brothers Keeper part 1 sets the foundation to many of the stronger episodes of the series. The clothes, guns, drugs, clubs, music, speed boats and cars are a part of the appeal, but it's the characters that are the glue that holds it altogether. Michael Philip Thomas and Don Johnson are perfectly cast, in this episode inadvertently stepping on each other's toes at first then agreeing to work with each other. There's some tension in this outing notably a car bomb, later an assassination then the conflict between the leads.

Overall, part one is a great pilot episode and its not hard to see why the series continued.

That's including The Sopranos. Iconic to say the very least. So many classic scenes/music. Plays as well today as it did in 1984. Michael Mann is grossly underestimated.

A superb introduction to the series
cotandreea20 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It was a superb introduction to the series, because it had cool music (In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins for example), amazing actors and amazing scenery. Also, I liked the part when Crockett and Tubbs face each other, but after that they realized it is important to work together on a ''temporary work relationship" as Crockett pointed out later in the episode. Very nice job to all cast and crew!

It all started here
movieman_kev6 March 2005
Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) is on the trail of finding Colombian drug-lord, Calderone, who killed his partner (Jimmy Smit, who would later get killed on NYPD Blue), when his runs into Rico Tubbs (Philip Thomas) who's out to avenger his brother's death at the same man's hands.Miami Vice affected pretty much every aspect of American culture in the '80's. Sonny was the epitome of cool. And it all started here, in the pilot episode/ TV movie. Perhaps it didn't age well, but I still like watching it every now and then. It can be seen on the Season one DVD set of the show.

My Grade: B+

The coolest and most stylised T.V show ever
thatbigfatkill28 May 2005
Warning: Spoilers
WOW! This is one heck of a t.v series. I got an episode of this with the paper and it is the most 80's thing I have ever seen right down to the Micheal Mann productions logo. And the best bit is that they are going to make a Movie out of it some time in 2006 with Micheal Mann himself directing it. If scarface was to be made into a television series this this would be it, the cloths, the cars, the buildings and those speed boats are all so stylised. Heck this show is better than the A-team. The total feel of Miami it embodied in the show and you have to embrace it, in the episode I viewed there was a arms deal with a Cuban guy(who i swear was the drug dealer with the chainsaw in scarface) and he had a real cool suit on but I won't tell you much more because I don,t like spoilers

A bench mark for the 80's
mm-3927 May 2003
This TV series is an icon for the 80's. Set, style, fashion, directing to new heights. Influenced my clothing style for about 3 years. The movie or pilot episode has some wrinkles, and drags in spots. It took the writers a few years to perfect the show. Watchable, if you watch today's TV friends or survivor, one would be amazed at the show budget. Boats, choppers, suits, $300 000 cars, big cast etc. Situation comedies about someone's midlife crisis, or who is going to get voted off the island for eating too much fish is boring; tv sure went for the cheap. No directing, script, maybe two room sets. It is nice to watch on TNN, I give the movie 6/10

A Decent Pilot for a Successful Television Series
Uriah439 November 2021
This pilot episode for the television series essentially begins with a Miami detective by the name of "Sonny Crockett" (Don Johnson) witnessing the murder of his partner "Detective Eddie Rivera" (Jimmy Smits) by a car bomb while conducting a drug trafficking investigation. As it turns out, the drug dealer they were investigating had just gone into business on his own and was actually the intended target and Eddie was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. The scene then shifts to New York City where an undercover detective there is shot to death by a drug lord by the name of "Esteban Calderone" (Miguel Pinero) while attempting to make a drug deal. Not long after that a New York street cop named "Ricardo Tubbs" (Philip Michael Thomas) arrives in Miami with the intention of killing Esteban Calderone for the murder of his brother. What he doesn't know is that Sonny Crockett intends to arrest the drug lord as well which creates some problems for all concerned. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a decent film for the most part which suffered somewhat by uneven acting and the typical made-for-television format inherent in a production of this type. Even so it managed to accomplish its primary objective as the television series turned out to be quite successful so all things considered it has proven its worth despite the aforementioned flaws and I have rated it accordingly.

Great show, with a great '80's look
ajwebb5 September 2003
Miami Vice is a great 80's show. With flashy suits, a hot car, and a Florida look. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas make this a great show, and Edward James Olmos adds to this show. Although the show did drop in the ratings, I thought it was still a good show. I watch this every time it comes on Spike TV (formerly TNN). I also recommend that you watch Nash Bridges, a newer Don Johnson.
