Looks like Colin Farrell is going from kicking ass in the future to a family-friendly Disney drama. Deadline reports that the Total Recall star is in talks to join Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson in the new Disney film Saving Mr. Banks, which is based on the real-life events surrounding the acquisition of the rights to Mary Poppins.
Directed by The Blind Side helmer John Lee Hooker, the story follows Walt Disney (Hanks) as he attempts to convince British author P.L. Travers (Thompson) to sell him the rights to make her beloved Mary Poppins story into a the classic we all know and love today. Here's the kicker, though: Farrell is going to play Travers' father. Yep, you read that correctly. He's the man who inspired the character of Mr. Banks, the lovable father figure in Mary Poppins.
It's unclear whether he'll appear in flashback form or if the production...

Exclusive: Deadline told you back in February that Tom Hanks was in the mix to play Walt Disney in the John Lee Hancock directed and Kelly Marcel-scripted saga of how Walt Disney waged a 14-year courtship to persuade Australian author P.L. Travers to sell him rights to make a film out of Mary Poppins. Now, things are heating up with Hanks to potentially star with Emma Thompson (Meryl Streep was also being courted) for Disney, which in February made a deal to acquire the Black List script, which is set up with producer Alison Owen of Ruby Films. Disney seems a natural place for the script, considering the studio owns many rights from making the 1964 classic film that starred Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and David Tomlinson, the latter of whom played Mr. Banks in the film. The heart of this script comes from how close Travers felt to...

Last night, we witnessed some defining moments in the careers of those nominated for Oscars at the 84th Annual Academy Awards. Their names will always have an asterisk next to them indicating their nomination in the industry's most prestigious ceremony, and today we have an update regarding a director whose film was up for Best Picture just a couple of years ago. The Blind Side director John Lee Hooker is in talks to join a Disney project called Saving Mr. Banks, which chronicles the behind-the-scenes story of how Walt Disney himself snagged the rights to the book on which the classic Mary Poppins is based. More below! Deadline has the story which also says heavy hitters Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are being considered for the roles of Walt Disney and Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers, respectively. It's still far too early on in the process to confirm any casting,...

Although John Lee Hancock stayed pretty quiet in the two years since directing Sandra Bullock to an Oscar win, a sign of his reemergence came last month with the news of a James Patterson adaptation — one that was putting off a pending cop drama, no less.
I think I understood the way cineastes felt upon Malick‘s return in the late ’90s.
That other film might get pushed back, too, in favor of a trip to the mouse house. According to Deadline, Hancock is negotiating with Disney for Saving Mr. Banks, a Kelly Marcel-scripted true-life story entailing Walt Disney‘s acquisition of the Mary Poppins story. How do you make that a movie? Well, a long and difficult 14-year attempt on Disney’s part to earn the rights to P.L. Travers‘ source material is a good start. Good enough to end up on the Black List, even.

The National Theater Live is bringing a broadcast of Danny Boyle‘s hit stage version of Frankenstein to the United States in cinemas on March 17 and March 24. The play stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes in the British TV series Sherlock) and Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting), who switch between the roles of Doctor Frankenstein and the Monster each night. The idea is to show the “double personality-like” nature of Frankenstein and his monster as presented in Shelley’s novel .
Boyle will have 2 camera rehearsals, with up to 8 cameras recording the play on the night. David Sabel, Nt head of digital media, told Deadline, “Our biggest problem is always, how can we make this exciting to watch rather than just have one static camera at the back? We’re not making a movie, it’s very much the live experience. This doesn’t feel like a piece of theatre that’s being...

Director Danny Boyle is working on directing a National Theatre stage version of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in the UK, before working on pageantry for the London Olympics.
The first ten weeks of the stage play quickly sold out, but due to high demand, the producers decided to stretch the production. So if your in the London area or planning a trip, the tickets for the later performances will go on sale soon. For anyone who can’t be their live, there is still a way to see Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein, as the performance will be broadcast to 375 screens around the world — 85 in the Us — on March 17 and later broadcast to the UK and Europe on March 24th.
It’s the first play he has directed in 15 years and there’s an interesting twist to that encore broadcast: his actors Johnny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch will alternate the...

Director Danny Boyle won't be making a new film for the next year, because he's got a National Theatre [1] stage version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to direct in the UK, and then he's got to work on pageantry for the London Olympics. The first ten weeks of Frankenstein are already sold out, but due to that success the production has been given a longer life, and tickets for performances into May will be on sale soon. For everyone else, however, there is still a way to see Danny Boyle's Frankenstein, as an performance of the play will be broadcast to 375 screens around the world -- 85 in the Us -- on March 17. Deadline [2] says that there will also be a second broadcast for the UK and Europe on March 24. And there's an interesting twist to that encore broadcast: two key actors will switch roles. Frankenstein, adapted by Nick Dear,...

A horror writer with a "Deadline" who has lapsed reality with his writing fantasy couldn't possibly go wrong can it? Why yes it can!
In 1981 a strange Canadian horror movie came out called "Deadline". Paragon released this psychological terror that is filled with strange imagery and at times truly depressing. It has only been given the Paragon VHS release that is fairly difficult to find today. Paragon had a tendency to release unknown movies back in its heyday. They did release things uncut and had many trailers on their releases. It does deserve a re-release as it was made in 2:35:1 so a new release in its original aspect ratio would give the movie justice.
The world of Steven Lessey (Stephen Young) , horror writer and movie maker, isn't looking so great. His movies are not well received by recent critics who excoriated him at a discussion panel.

It was announced today that actor Peter Weller has joined the cast Dexter for 8 of the 12 episodes of Season 5. Hit the jump to find out who Weller will play. According to Deadline, Weller will play 'a troubled Miami Metro police officer who gets caught up in an internal affairs investigation'. Ok, not nearly as exciting as I had hoped, but still, this could be good. Season 5 of Dexter is currently filming for a Sept 26th debut. Weller joins other dexter newbies Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, Eli Stone), Julia Stiles and Shawn Hatosy.
