Anime artist Yoshitoshi Shinomiya cut his teeth working on films by superstar Japanese filmmaker Makoto Shinkai, including the director’s box office smash hit “Your Name.” Now, Shinomiya is prepping his feature directorial debut, “A New Dawn,” a profoundly personal film inspired by the changing Japanese landscape after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.
Tokyo-based Asmik Ace and France’s Miyu Productions are producing the feature, which the former will distribute globally.
“A New Dawn” unwinds inside an inactive fireworks factory that is about to go into administrative action. For the past four years, young Keitaro has lived inside the derelict structure, chasing the illusion of a father who vanished years before. The location used to be nestled in a lush forest, but the surrounding area has recently been redeveloped by the city, which covered the land with solar panels. Only a scant bit of greenery around the factory remains amongst the sea of panels.

They might have eight Oscar wins between them, rave reviews from critics, a combined box office total north of $2.4 billion, and an adorable couple nickname -- but "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" have left at least one person decidedly unimpressed. Former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Kristen Wiig returned to the show this week for her fifth time as host, and brought a familiar character with her: the Weekend Update desk's cultural correspondent, Aunt Linda.
With facial expressions worthy of a YouTube thumbnail, a haircut that screams "I'd like to speak to the manager," and some kind of accent, Aunt Linda isn't the type to just go with the critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes. She (somewhat hypocritically) tears into the excessive amount of pink in "Barbie," queries the geographical location of Barbieland, and rejects the movie's feminist messaging. Ryan Gosling is the only sacred cow that doesn't get slain ("He's very hard...

In Chiara Malta and Sébastien Laudenbach’s Chicken for Linda!, Paulette (Clotilde Hesme) feels guilty about punishing her eight-year-old daughter, Linda (Mélinée Leclerc), for something she didn’t do. To make things up to Linda, Paulette agrees to prepare the dish that was her late husband’s specialty: chicken with peppers. The day of the dinner, though, coincides with a widespread strike, closing all the grocery stores across town and forcing Paulette, with Linda in tow, to improvise. What follows is a charming, madcap race to the dinner table that manages to rope in bumbling cops, a determined older sister, and live poultry.
Chicken for Linda! is beautifully animated in a style that has its roots in the hand-painted aesthetic of Laudenbach’s 2016 film The Girl Without Hands, though it feels completely distinctive. Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Fargo” Season 5 finale.
As touching as Juno Temple’s role on “Fargo” may have been for fans of the FX anthology series, it’s a relationship that goes both ways. The actress described her time on Noah Hawley’s anthology series as both “terrifying” and “one of the most extraordinary experiences” of her career.
“Characters like Dot [do] not come along very often, definitely not to me. I’m eternally grateful to Noah [Hawley] for having the faith in me to play her,” Temple told TheWrap after the crime-drama’s Season 5 finale on Tuesday. “She’s made me a much, much more aware, insightful, maybe even motherly woman. Also, it was something that challenged me in a way that I want to be challenged. I want to feel terrified every day before I go to work because I want to make people proud. This job did that in spades.

Fresh from the recent Halloween sequels, director and co-writer David Gordon Green takes a crack at another big-name horror franchise with this legacy sequel to The Exorcist, the first of a planned trilogy. The result is something of a mixed bag, and your enjoyment of the film will largely depend on your relationship to the original movie.
In an effective prologue, African-American photographer Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.), has to make a horrific choice between saving the life of his wife, or that of his unborn child, following a devastating earthquake. Cut to fourteen years later, where we find Victor as a single parent in Ohio, living with his teenage daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett), whose best friend is her white school...

Don’t underestimate Juno Temple’s endearing and indefatigable ‘Fargo’ character at the Golden Globes
Juno Temple has certainly moved on from the sweet world of AFC Richmond and “Ted Lasso” for her latest role in Noah Hawley’s crime anthology series “Fargo.” Its fifth installment kicks off with her character Dorothy Lyon accidentally tasing a police officer in a school board meeting brawl and progresses to her ingeniously boobytrapping her house “Home Alone”-style to ward off multiple kidnapping attempts. Through it all, Temple has balanced Dot’s chipper nature with her dark, harrowing past, and her work has netted her a Golden Globe nomination, the first of her career.
Temple currently ranks fourth in our combined odds in the Limited/Movie Actress category, trailing category frontrunner Ali Wong (“Beef”) as well as Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”) and Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & The Six”). While those other performers all have advantages — “Beef” in particularly looks to sweep the Limited categories with wins for limited series,...

[Warning” This article contains spoilers for “Fargo” Season 5, Episode 7.]
Over the first six episodes of “Fargo” Season 5, audiences have put together Dorothy Lyon’s backstory. Abused by the misogynist Sheriff Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm), Dot (Juno Temple) escaped and started a new life under a new name, becoming a wife and mother who is now willing to go to any lengths to protect her family. But in the seventh episode, “Linda,” Dot finally shares the extent of her abuse through a marionette show.
There’s a very good reason why Dot uses marionettes to recount meeting the kindly Linda as a teen and moving in with Linda, her husband, Roy, and their son: She’s tracked Linda down at a commune for formerly abused women, and this is how they all share their stories. But “Fargo” uses the art form to create something out of one of the darker Grimm Brothers tales, a horrifying glimpse into...

This article contains spoilers for Fargo season 5 episode 7 “Linda.”
FX’s Fargo is not shy about indulging one-off sojourns into the realm of the fantastical. The show’s second season featured a UFO deus ex machina while season 3 took time out for a trip to a celestial bowling alley that might be the afterlife or at least the soundstage for The Big Lebowski.
Fargo‘s latest dip into the dreamworld, however, is one of its most impressive yet. Fargo season 5 episode 7 “Linda” finds our hero Dorothy “Dot” Lyon (Juno Temple) visiting the mysterious Camp Utopia to find her abusive ex-husband Roy Tillman’s (Jon Hamm) first wife Linda (Kari Matchett). In the process she stumbles into a whole bunch of other Lindas (who greet with one another with a cheerful “Hi Linda” like in Barbie) … and some puppets.
At first glance, the proceedings come across as reality – albeit a strange reality.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Fargo Year 5, Episode 7, “Linda.”] Fargo isn’t new to tackling the surreal, and the latest Year 5 installment, “Linda,” does just that as Dot (Juno Temple) takes a trippy journey down the road to Camp Utopia. As fans will recall, Dot was seen driving away from having dropped off her daughter Scotty (Sienna King) at Indira Olmstead’s (Richa Moorjani) home in Episode 5. She resurfaced in the form of battered photos enclosed in a file presented to Lorraine (Jennifer Jason Leigh) in Episode 6, and now, viewers rejoined Dot on the road. Sleepy and motivated, she keeps inching her way toward a destination we have yet to understand. Upon stopping at a rest area for a bite to eat, Dot smiles down at her stack of pancakes before continuing her “journey.” Following her to a windmill, viewers see Dot dig up a postcard to Camp Utopia with a message from Linda that reads,...

Fargo is finally back for another season after taking a three year long break. Created by Noah Hawley, the FX’s anthology black comedy–crime drama series is based on a 1996 film of the same name and it revolves around a new set of characters in Minnesota and North Dakota in the fall of 2019. Fargo Season 5 revolves around Dorothy “Dot” Lyon, who at first glance seems to be a typical midwestern wife but when her mysterious past comes back to haunt her she gets in trouble with the law, specifically North Dakota Sheriff Roy Tillman.

Not me! Not me! No sir! Not me!
I just returned from a family reunion, and it was just about the only type I’d go to. It was a reunion of the various staff members of the Chicago Seed, the high-circulation “underground” newspaper published between and 1974.
This gathering of geriatric hippie revolutionary writers and artists was prompted by the recent deaths of two Seedlings: Snappy Skippy Williamson and Jayze Jay Lynch . I discussed the passing of my two long-time friends in this space; click on the above links if you missed those columns or if you have the desire to commit my words to memory.
Joining the Seed staff in January 1969 was the single most important step I have taken in my life, short of marrying Linda.

1. Nadja
Pixelated imagery (shot with a toy pixel vision camera of all things) along with slick B&W cinematography pulled me right in. This David Lynch produced flick mixes art film with horror and a nice dash of humor to boot. Nadja (Elina Lowensohn) and her man slave arrive in New York City to claim the remains of their father, Dracula, who was taken out by Dr. Van Helsing played perfectly by Peter Fonda. A young couple, Lucy (Galaxy Craze) and Jim (Martin Donovan) are pulled into Nadja's web of seduction which complicates matters as Jim is the Nephew of Van Helsing. Enter Nadja's brother Edgar, who has no love for Nadja and things get even more dicey. The film is an allegory about family dysfunction and while disjointed in parts,...
