good movie, a little overrated
frauna27 March 2008
Given that Chilean movie industry is a small one(no more than 5 or 6 films per year, and in a good year) and most of the movies are completely forgettable, this one shines among the others, of course. It has becomes a 'classic', and probably deserves it. One the few movies (if not the only one) about Chilean way of life in the countryside, with all the prejudices, contradictions and people playing the guitar that everybody could expect. A great movie? No. French cinema, Italian cinema, even American, have hundreds of good movies like this one, showing ordinary people, rich guys ruling, teenagers suffering. Watch it, if you like this kind of cinema. If you are expecting a masterpiece, well...

Love crashes against reality
Ostomedo10 October 2000
This is a very good movie made by one of most important and consistent chilean filmmaker. Silvio Caoizzi show us all the decadence of chilean aristocracy in the early 1900s, but, as Andalu said, some things have barely changed in Chile. The love that Julio feels for a local prostitute is destroyed by the raw, classy and decadent reality he must live. This movie was voted as "Chilean film of the century" for local public. The sepia colour, some characters and all its unique atmosphere are the best in this movie. Above all of that, it was made in a period when no one were filming movies in Chile, and that is a big merit.

This is the best Chilean movie I have ever seen

This is the best Chilean movie I have ever seen. For all the resources the Director had, Caiozzi made an excellent job recreating the rural Chile at the turn of the century. The psychological treatment of the characters and how crude and unmanageable the reality can be for an adolescent when too much is expected from him. The performances are marvelous. And at the end, I was left with the feeling that things practically haven't changed at all in Chile.
