We find out how Matt and Lily first meet. Lily arrives at Matt's place to pick up some typing. Lily is a playwright and accidentally leaves a manuscript at his place. Matt reads the play but he doesn't believe Lily wrote it.
Matt decides to write a musical using Lily's story. When he finds out that she has a lunch date with a man he becomes jealous. When Lily goes to lunch, Matt does his best to stop her going.
Matt and Lily finally start working on their musical but it's a slow start. There is also the problem of love, and they have opposite views on how it should occur in the musical. It turns out, their ideas aren't that different after all.
Lily wants Matt to be more outgoing but he is comfortable where he is. She has to work hard to get him to go out. They eventually go to a party where Lily finds out that Matt suffers from claustrophobia, which can be cured by a kiss.
Matt and Lily spend a weekend in the country with a couple who may want to invest in their musical. However, the hostess is more interested in Matt than the musical. Lily is forced to intervene during an eventful stay.
Lily is concerned with Matt's behaviour and gets her brother, a doctor, to examine him. Then chaos ensues when Matt's mother arrives and Lily mistakes her for a man-hungry Maria Bellcanto. - and then Maria arrives.
Matt is engaged to Lily and they are preparing for the wedding. His mother cuts him off and money is tight. Matt books a room in the Claremont Hotel but he is stunned when they are upgraded to the bridal suite, with a price to match.
After their marriage, Lily and Matt move into their own flat. Against Matt's wishes, Lily goes out looking for work, which she thinks will allow Matt to continue with his music. Matt does his best to sabotage her chances of getting a job.
Lily gets a job in a pet shop. Matt is unhappy as he feels that he has lost his muse. He then goes out and buys some expensive gifts for Lily despite not being able to afford them. Meanwhile, he continues to undermine Lily.
Lily's great uncle Boris holidaying from Russia and is staying with her mother and grandmother. His strong political views causes her grandmother to leave and impose herself on Matt and Lily, which is the start of a chaotic day.
Lily is bothered that Matt has banned all her friends from coming to their flat. Eventually, she remembers Georgina. Initially, Matt dislikes her but everything changes when Matt finds out that Georgina is a pianist.
Lily decides that Matt needs more promotion and sets out to get him the recognition she thinks he deserves. She accidentally gives a tape of Matt's work to Georgie Fame, which leads to Matt getting an agent and a contract.
Matt is trying to write a song for Georgie Fame but is struggling to start. At the same time, Lily finds out that she is pregnant but is trying to find the right time to tell Matt. Only a temporary separation inspires Matt.
