Is that Tashi Donaldson or Dua Lipa?
Saturday Night Live audiences were treated to a nod at Luca Guadagnino’s latest film Challengers during a sketch featuring host Dua Lipa as a somewhat intense woman who had invited a date over to her apartment — aka SNL featured player Marcello Hernández.
Naturally, one of the first things he notices when he walks into the room is the hundreds of Sonny Angel dolls she has lining her walls.
“They’re companions for 25-year-old working women,” she explains. But, she assures, her date won’t need to compete with her 650+ dolls for her affection…just one.
Cue Bowen Yang, dressed as one of said dolls. Oh, and the Challengers soundtrack.
“I haven’t seen the movie,” Hernández admits, to which Yang replies: “Well, don’t worry, cause you’re about to live it.”

Saturday Night Live is poking a bit of fun at a common form of activism seen on red carpets.
The sketch comedy series put together a fake ad for the “teeny tiny statement pins” frequently seen on red carpets, supporting a variety of causes.
With the Met Gala approaching, SNL figured it might be the perfect time to promo these pins for “if you don’t know what to say but you want something that sounds like it could be important.”
Host Dua Lipa helped promo the pins because, with them, “I can say whatever I want and no one has to know.”
“It’s the perfect statement piece to style it with any outfit because it’s invisible. I’m even wearing one right now,” an Anna Wintour lookalike added, as the camera zoomed in on her pin that read “The Devil Wears Prada is not about me.”
Not sure what cause to support?...

Jerry Seinfeld joined “Saturday Night Live’s” Weekend Update to make fun of his press tour for his Netflix movie, “Unfrosted,” which chronicles the origin story of the Pop-Tart.
Colin Jost introduced Seinfeld as a “man who did too much press” for his Netflix movie, which also marked Seinfeld’s directorial debut. When Seinfeld joined the show, he pretended to be unsure of where he was.
“Where am I exactly? Is this a podcast?” he asked Jost.
Jost explained to Seinfeld he’s live on “SNL” and has seen him doing promo for his Netflix movie “everywhere.” When asked how much press is too much, Seinfeld replied, “You don’t know until someone who cares about you shows you a video package and you see yourself with people with these names like Hoda, Mo Rocca, Chanel, Vlad.”

Jerry Seinfeld crashed Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update segment, and Colin Jost introduced him as “a man who did too much press.”
The Seinfeld star has been on a press tour promoting his Netflix movie Unfrosted, which he directed and stars in.
Seinfeld came to the Update desk, not knowing where he was, asking if it was a podcast. Jost pointed out that the actor was even on The Rich Eisen Show, something Seinfeld had forgotten he had been on.
“I like Rich Eisen, I find him accessible,” the comedian said.
Jost asked Seinfeld how someone might know if they’re doing excessive press with the actor saying, “That’s the thing. You don’t know until someone who cares about you shows you a video package and you see yourself with these people with these names… Hoda, Maraca, Chanel, Vlad…”

Dua Lipa is schooling Saturday Night Live on the bad blood between Kendrick Lamar and Drake.
During a local news segment sketch, the “Dance The Night Away” singer appeared as a culture critic Wanda Weems to catch audiences up to speed on all the jabs the two rappers have taken at each other in diss tracks over the past few days.
But, as it turns out, Good Morning Greenville‘s culture reporter isn’t quite so tapped in.
“One clue on the song ‘Euphoria,’ when Kendrick describes Drake as Canadian, that’s because Drake is from Toronto,” she says, stating an obvious fact about the “Hotline Bling” rapper.
She continues, “And he calls Drake ‘Crodie,’ which is a term used by the Crips, which according to Wikipedia is an alliance of street gangs based in Southern California.”
While none of her insight is much more helpful than that, things take...

Dua Lipa dove deep into the scorching-hot rap beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar on “Saturday Night Live.”
On the latest episode, Lipa appeared alongside Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner and Devon Walker as morning talk show hosts who attempt to explain the diss tracks that have taken over the music world in the last few days to their viewers.
Lipa played a culture critic who has been locked away “for the past 48 hours trying to piece it all together.” She appeared in front of a white board plastered with portraits of the two rappers and yarn connecting Post-It notes with phrases like “shoe size,” “feet” and “Ovo.”

Saturday Night Live‘s latest cold open centered on Columbia University’s handling of the pro-Palestinian protests on campus amid the Israel–Hamas war.
During the sketch, Mikey Day, Kenan Thompson and Heidi Gardner played concerned parents of students participating in the protests.
Last week, hundreds of demonstrators were arrested after the school’s president called the New York Police Department to help restore order on campus. Police cleared the university’s Hamilton Hall after protesters occupied the administration building earlier in the day.
After being asked their thoughts on the protests, Gardner initially responded, “It’s been tough. Now, I’m all for free speech, but I don’t understand what they think they’re accomplishing and that’s really putting a strain on me and my daughter’s relationship.”
Thompson later shared his thoughts: “Nothing makes me prouder than young people using their voices to fight for what they believe in.

Dua Lipa debuted as a guest host on Saturday Night Live and revealed her “radical optimism.”
The singer took the stage of the NBC late-night talk show on the heels of the release of her third studio album titled, Radical Optimism.
Lipa said that many people have been asking what radical optimism is, saying, “To me, it’s like looking on the bright side in any situation.”
She then asked the audience to share their problems and give examples of how she would take them on.
Andrew Dismukes played an audience member who was left by his wife after he accidentally called her mom.
“Well, on the bright side, now you’ll have more time to spend with your mom,” Dua Lipa said. “See, radical optimism.”
A second audience member, this time played by Bowen Yang, said he had gone to the doctor who advised him to stop drinking.

Saturday Night Live tackled the college campus pro-Palestinian protests by taking aim at high education’s high tuition costs and questionable payoff.
Rather than tackle the Gaza issue itself, SNL instead went with the Pov of parents, featuring a spook of a NY1 talk show roundtable of parents concerned about their children taking part in the demonstrations.
While two of the parents earnestly expressed worry over their kids but acknowledged their right to express themselves, Kenan Thompson played a Alphonso Roberts, a parent with a daughter at Columbia University, and a father who will have none of the disruption.
His daughter, he said, “better have her butt in class. Let me find out if she is in one of those damn tents instead of the dorm room I pay for.”
He added, “I am all in favor of you all’s kids protesting. My kids know better.”

When Steven Spielberg set out to helm "1941" (a film John Wayne tried to stop him from making), he was seemingly unbeatable. Here was the man who invented the summer blockbuster with "Jaws," then followed it up with the big hit "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." He was on top of the world, and it felt like anything he put his name on was going to be a success. Then "1941" crashed and burned.
Sort of.
Here's the thing: in the grand scheme of things, "1941" was not relly a flop. However, because critics were mixed on the flick and it wasn't as big of a hit as Spielberg's previous two movies, it was seen as a failure. Spielberg the wunderkind was showing signs of fatigue. And to be fair, "1941" is definitely one of Spielberg's weaker efforts. Based very loosely on true events, the film follows several...

Steve Martin’s 2006 Saturday Night Live hosting assignment still stands out for Seth Meyers, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone. But not for the right reasons.
On Monday’s April 29 episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, the team talked about the surfer sketch they worked on for Martin.
Meyers said he thinks about it “all the time, mostly because every time I see Steve Martin, he brings it up.”
He asked his co-hosts to explain the sketch, “Surf meeting,” noting, “You guys wrote it.”
“‘Surf meeting’ was a classic format for us, which was one person sucking and not being able to take a hit over and over and over again, like way too many times,” said Samberg. In the sketch, Samberg asks Martin’s character, who’s “in an old-timey bathing suit looking super dorkish,” to leave.

Los Angeles is not the first city fans would associate with comedian John Mulaney. That would be Chicago, his hometown and the backdrop to innumerable childhood anecdotes in his stand-up act, or New York, where he broke out as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” and shot a special at Radio City Music Hall. But L.A. is where Mulaney now lives; it’s also currently home to the second iteration of Netflix Is a Joke, a massive, weeklong comedy festival organized by the streaming service as a show of genre dominance. (Netflix stand-up head Robbie Praw used to run programming at Montreal’s vaunted Just for Laughs event and has essentially created a West Coast version.) And so we have “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” a weeklong special event combining studio segments, pre-taped sketches and man-on-the-street interviews into a sort of pop-up talk show.

Ryan Gosling is no longer interested in acting roles that will put him in a “dark place,” and now chooses his parts with his wife, Eva Mendes, based on what they feel will be “best for all of us… with our family in mind first.”
The comments came in a new interview Gosling gave to WSJ Magazine, touching on the success of last year’s Barbie and his role in The Fall Guy. Addressing roles he’s played in recent years, Gosling explained that he’s focused on things that will preserve his mental health for the sake of Mendes and their two children.
“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” he said (per Variety). “[I try] to read the room at home and [what feels like] is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with...

“Unfrosted,” the first movie directed by Jerry Seinfeld (who also stars in it), is an agreeably flaked-out piece of surrealist vaudeville. It’s a comedy about the creation of the Pop-Tart, back in 1963. That makes it sound like part of the new wave of mass-market product biopics — movies like “Flamin’ Hot” (about the creation of spicy Cheetos), “Blackberry” (about the invention of the smart phone), and the one I think of as the “Citizen Kane” of the genre, “The Founder,” with Michael Keaton as Ray Kroc, the man who changed the world by taking over and franchising McDonald’s. These films all speak to a time — ours — when consumer products haven’t just taken on a life of their own. They’ve become part of our identities.
“Unfrosted,” however, is not like those other films. While broadly based in reality, the entire movie is a put-on, a wackazoid tall tale, a...

Dua Lipa‘s third studio album has arrived!
Radical Optimism is packed with hits like “Illusion,” “Training Season,” and “Houdini,” as well as eight more tracks.
“I wrote this album during my singledom,” Dua said in a statement. “I always came into the studio with some funny story, and they all inspired different songs. There’s a looseness and an honesty that I hadn’t had before.”
Dua describes Radical Optimism as “psychedelic pop” noting that “there are musical breaks and a mix of different sounds, and when you listen to it with your eyes closed, it opens up a very visual world.”
You can catch Dua performing her new songs on Saturday Night Live when she pulls double duty as host and musical guest on Saturday, May 4.

Saturday Night Live is having Dua Lipa do double duty this weekend as host and musical guest.
But first, she had to endure the traditional Thursday promo. This time, she was joined by SNL cast member Mikey Day.
In the first segment, he offers to “spit some lines” if she needs any musical assistance this weekend. She declines, of course.
The second segment finds Day excited about Dua Lipa being “double trouble” this weekend, a bouncy bit exacerbated by his caffeine intake.

Given her one-of-a-kind awards resume and irrefutable status as an acting legend, it’s no wonder Meryl Streep is widely expected to be honored at this year’s Emmys for her work on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Taking the gold for her first regular comedy series role would be impressive enough, but the noteworthiness of her win would extend far beyond that. Having joined her show in its third season, she would be only the 10th non-original comedy series cast member to ever pull off a lead or supporting Emmy victory.
Not including sketch performers, Streep would be said winners club’s first new entrant in over three decades. The last was Kirstie Alley, who replaced Shelley Long as the female lead of “Cheers” at the start of season six and prevailed on her third Emmy bid in 1991. Per THR, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes star Kevin Durand will join Liam Neeson in the upcoming reboot of The Naked Gun.
Liam Neeson has long been attached to star in the Naked Gun reboot, and it was announced last month that Pamela Anderson would be starring alongside him. It’s not known precisely who Anderson will play, but it’s expected that she’ll be the romantic lead, similar to Priscilla Presley’s role in the original movies. Paul Walter Hauser has also signed on to play Captain Ed, the role played by George Kennedy in the previous Naked Gun movies. Production will kick off later this month with Akiva Schaffer directing from a script by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand.

2023 was the end of an era in the Best Comedy Supporting Actress Emmy category. For the first time in 10 years, “Saturday Night Live” was snubbed in the category in which it has been nominated a record 22 times and has won twice, both for Kate MicKinnon. Can it rebound in 2024?
Ever since the TV academy allowed “SNL” cast members to enter in the comedy acting categories in 2008, the sketch series has dominated supporting actress, with 2013 and 2023 being the only years it has failed to earn a nomination. McKinnons is “SNL’s” most nominated performer in the category — and overall — with nine bids, the second most in the category after Rhea Perlman and Loretta Swit, who each received 10.
After McKinnon’s final nomination for her final season in 2022, it was clear that “SNL” might struggle to continue its nomination streak. She was “SNL’s” only nominee in the category that year, down...

Amidst political turmoil in the U.S. and abroad, TikTok addressed brand and agency representatives at the 2024 NewFronts. The ByteDance-owned app delivered a pitch that focused on several of its ad products. It is rolling out new options for its premium Pulse Premiere tier and introducing audience measurement solutions from Nielson One Ads and iSpot.tv.
TikTok’s presentation included new details about Pulse, the ad program it revealed at its NewFronts pitch two years ago. Pulse, which resembles YouTube’s Select program, offers roped-off ad inventory next to a selection of top-performing channels. TikTok’s Pulse partners include prominent creators and publishers, and the app is adding some more notable names to that list. New Pulse signees like Paramount Global and the NHL are joining existing partners like Buzzfeed, Conde Nast, and the NFL.

After a shortened 2022-23 season, Saturday Night Live returned a bit later than usual to kick off its 2023-24 run.
The writers strike affected both the end of last season and the start of season 49; the end of the labor action on Sept. 25 meant a mid-October start for SNL — with former castmember Pete Davidson hosting — rather than the late September or early October premiere the show usually has. (The cast is covered under a different SAG-AFTRA contract than the one actors are currently striking against, so they can perform without crossing picket lines.)
The show’s cast returned intact from last season, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman moving up from featured players to repertory players. Chloe Troast joined the cast as a featured player.

Being satirized on Saturday Night Live is a right of passage for newsmakers and institutions, and many of them consider the attention well worth having the joke on them.
Ok, maybe not Sen. Katie Britt.
But for the people at NPR who produce Tiny Desk Concerts, SNL‘s March 30th episode—which featured a sketch parodying their now venerable and suitably idiosyncratic internet series—was validation worthy of celebration.
And in perfectly quirky Tiny Desk fashion, they are celebrating it by displaying a cue card from the SNL sketch as part of their familiar overstuffed desk “set.”
“I thought it was great,” says Bobby Carter, the host and producer of the signature NPR series. “It was super flattering. When SNL does anything, whether they’re making fun of you or not, it’s a form of flattery.”
Well, let’s consider what SNL did with “Tiny Desk” in the sketch.

“The Fall Guy” (Universal) opens in the U.S./Canada Friday — one of the most prestigious spots on the movie release calendar. Since “Iron Man” in 2008, and since Disney initiated the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2012, the first weekend in May has marked the start of the summer movie season.
When MCU “Deadpool & Wolverine” left this date in favor of July 26, Universal grabbed it — and the expectations that come with it. As a result, there’s an unusually wide range of estimates for the domestic opening weekend: We hear everything from the high 20s to over $50 million, with consensus closer to $35 million or a bit more.
An opening weekend of $35 million-$40 million would be a big improvement over a disastrous April (where “Civil War” was the sole film to debut over $25 million), but that would be only the fifth-best opening of 2024. Historically, this date tops any opening gross and usually...

Ryan Gosling is going full method in his promotion of The Fall Guy. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss the film, which is out Friday, the actor arrived by beating up everyone backstage and then joined forces with Guillermo Rodriguez to take down the last man standing.
The stunt sequence also featured fellow late-night guest Jeff Ross, who made fun of Gosling’s peach suit, saying “I didn’t know it was still Easter.” Gosling left Ross unharmed, but did borrow his dressing room lamp to smash over someone’s head.

In a new interview with David Letterman’s Netflix show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, John Mulaney revealed something Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels shared about sobriety and addiction.
Mulaney recalled how Michaels invoked John Belushi, who died in 1982 at 33 after struggling with addiction.
While in rehab, Mulaney received a call from Michaels.
“He goes, ‘I knew John Belushi for seven years. I’ve been talking about him for 48 years, because that’s the shrapnel that happens when someone goes down like that,'” Mulaney said.
Belushi died from a combination of cocaine and heroin during a days-long drug binge.
“And [Michaels] goes, ‘You know, John didn’t want to die. You know, he didn’t plan to. Just because it’s a story, just because it’s sort of set in stone like history, people don’t want to die from this.'”
