Warner Bros. Television is in talks to develop a limited series based on the life of silent film star Buster Keaton. The project would star Rami Malek as Keaton.
“The Batman” director Matt Reeves would direct the limited series and produce via his 6th and Idaho Productions banner, which is under an overall deal at Warner Bros. TV. Malek and David Weddle also produce, with Ted Cohen in talks to serve as executive producer and writer. James Curtis’ 2022 biography “Buster Keaton: A Filmmaker’s Life” may serve as source material for the series, as the studio is negotiating the rights for the book.
Keaton, who lived from 1895 to 1966, is thought of as one of the most prominent stars of the silent film era aside from Charlie Chaplin. He got his start as a child in vaudevile acts alongside his parents, who were traveling performers, before transitioning into film in the late 1910s.

It’s amazing how some tweaking can turn a decent film showing its age into a worthwhile project that earns its upgrade four decades later. To watch Franklin J. Schaffner’s original Papillon adaptation is to see an arduous series of harrowing ordeals strung together for no reason other than the thrill of adventure. It introduces the titular tough guy safecracker Henri “Papillon” Charrière and scrawny forger Louis Dega as two men caught in a horrible place with little hope. They team-up in order to use each other: brawn and money respectively. But as the film continues on, that dynamic never changes. It’s hinted that a friendship forms, but the two never pretend anything they do for the other is selfless. The result is a hollow depiction of inspired by true events machismo.

No, it’s not. That’s the answer to the obvious question that will be asked about whether or not Michael Noer’s remake of Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman’s classic “Papillon” is as good as the original. It’s not even close. In fact, it’s hard not to be offended at nearly every decision made in this version, in which screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski (“Prisoners”), working from the credited screenplay by Dalton Trumbo and Lorenzo Semple Jr.

Word of advice: If you're planning on watching the new remake of Papillon, try not to see the original first.
Because if you do, the experience is somewhat akin to going out for dinner at Peter Luger and ordering the porterhouse, then following that up the next night with a T-bone at Denny’s. In both cases you're getting more or less the same cut of steak, but the comparisons stop there.

Gordon generally played strong silent types and his face was familiar to movie goers especially in the 1960s and 1970s. In "Bullitt" he had a meaty role playing the partner of McQueen's maverick detective. In "Papillon" he was a fellow convict suffering through the hell of Devil's Island prison and in "The Towering Inferno" he played a fellow firefighter helping McQueen to save trapped people from a blazing skyscraper. Gordon also appeared on numerous television series in guest star roles and earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in "The Defenders". Rami Malek is in Emmy mode.
The “Mr. Robot” star just flew back to the States from London for a fitting with a stylist, an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and a visit to the Television Critics Association Awards (where his USA Network series was named best new series).
What’s more, he’s got a new movie to prep: Malek will play the Dustin Hoffman role in a reworking of John Frankenheimer’s 1974 prison-break classic, “Papillon.”
This actor doesn’t agree to do just anything – he sets sky-high standards for himself. That’s how Malek broke through the noise on Sam Esmail’s innovative paranoid psycho-thriller “Mr. Robot.” The drama seemed to come out of nowhere, but quickly collected so many nominations and awards (Golden Globes Best Drama Series, Peabody, Critics Choice, AFI Ten Best TV, Gotham Breakthrough) that six Emmy nominations seemed inevitable.

With Charlie Hunnam set to star in the remake of the Steve McQueen 1973 flick Papillon, Mr. Robot star Rami Malek is now in talks to play opposite the actor, Deadline reports. The drama will be directed by Michael Noer, off a script penned by Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners). Malek would take the role originally played by Dustin Hoffman, while Hunnam is filling the shoes of Steve McQueen in the story about two criminals who must become friends as they both begin sentences in a horrible prison located on Devil’s Island — and their friendship buds into a plan to escape. Malek has been making waves with his performance on USA’s Mr. Robot, which occupies a lot of the actor’s work time. The remake of Papillon is set to commence principal photography this September.

It’s exceedingly difficult to imagine that any sound-minded person has ever uttered a sentence along the lines of, “That Charlie Hunnam guy, he’s like a modern day Steve McQueen.” He might be a good-looking blonde on a motorcycle, but after nearly two decades in the business, the Sons Of Anarchy star is still far from being the exemplar of cool. Still, Deadline is reporting that he’ll be stepping into McQueen’s Golden Globe-nominated role as real-life Devil’s Island escapee Henri “Papillon” Charrière in the remake of Franklin J. Schaffner 1973 classic, Papillon.
Joining him in penal colony anguish will likely be Rami Malek as his less-cool counterfeiter prison buddy, which is actually some pretty decent casting. I've never seen Papillon, the 1973 prison break movie starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, but it's getting a Hollywood remake with Charlie Hunnam in the lead role originally played by McQueen. Now Deadline says that Mr. Robot star Rami Malek has signed on to the movie as well, and he'll be playing the role originally played by Hoffman. Michael Noer (Northwest) is directing, and Prisoners screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski wrote the script.
The film is a contemporary retelling of the original, which was based on the memoirs of convicted felon and fugitive Henri Charriere. He was a petty criminal from the Parisian underworld who was unjustly convicted of murder in 1930s France. He staged an epic escape from Devil’s Island, a notorious penal colony in French Guiana in South America, aided by quirky counterfeiter Louis Dega.
This seems like a part that will be a breeze for Malek to play.

He may not be involved in FX’s planned Sons of Anarchy prequel series – barring a change of heart – or Pacific Rim 2 for that matter, but Charlie Hunnam has still lined up a collection of enticing projects.
Case in point: Papillon, Michael Noer’s full-blown remake of the 1973 prison break movie, where Hunnam will play the part of Henri “Papillon” Charriere. It appears the actor has now found his parter-in-crime, too, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming today that Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) has agreed terms to star opposite Hunnam as Louis Dega.
Forty years ago, those roles were filled by Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, respectively, who form an unlikely friendship in a French Guiana work camp during the 1930s. It’s the eyes, isn’t it? Wide like saucers and twice as deep, they’re impenetrable. And the wooden leer of the wide open maw betrays them, separate and with its own agenda. Of course I’m referring to ventriloquist dummies, and the eerie spell they cast upon the viewer. The horror viewer, specifically; we’ll seek out anything that gives us a sense of unease. Which brings us to Richard Attenborough’s Magic (1978), a wryly creepy tale of encroaching madness and showbiz folly. (Aren’t they the same thing?)
Produced by 20th Century Fox and Joseph E. Levine (Carnal Knowledge) and released by 20th Century, Magic opened in November of ’78 in the U.S. and rolled out to the rest of the world in early ’79. Deadline is reporting that Charlie Hunnam is attached to star in a remake of Papillon
The original starred Steve McQueen as "a man unjustly convicted of murder in 1930s France and condemned to life in a South American prison. He plots his escape, aided by a counterfeiter (Dustin Hoffman co-starred) who finances Papillon’s prison escapes in exchange for protection in prison."
The remake is being produced by Wolf Of Wall Street's Red Granite. Michael Noer will direct from a script by Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners), with shooting expected to begin in the fall.
Hunnam is perhaps best known for his role as Jax Teller on FX's Sons Of Anarchy. Since the hit series ended he's been trying to transition into film, with middling results. His biggest film to date was in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, which, although loved by del Toro's faithful, wasn't the hit it was expected to be.

Our series on big-screen remakes continues with a cult horror film that kickstarted the illustrious career of Steve McQueen. This week, Cinelinx looks at The Blob (1958 vs. 1988). Come inside to see how these two films stack up.
The original version of The Blob was a low-budget monster film made for $110,000. The titular creature was originally supposed to be called The Molten Meteor Monster, which then was changed to The Mass, which turned into The Glob, and Finally The Blob. The film's tongue-in-cheek title song was written by Burt Bacharach and Mack David, which became a hit. The movie was directed by Irvin Yeaworth who specialized in directing motivational educational and religious films, so this was a departure for him. The film was a moderate success, grossing over $4 million, although the critics weren’t overly kind. It has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite its cheesiness, its reputation has grown over...

Prisoners writer Aaron Guzikowski is responsible for the script, which will once again be based on a memoir by Henri “Papillon” Charriere, played in the original by McQueen.
