In the annals of rich men who look to Hollywood to build a secondary empire, real estate billionaire Charles S. Cohen (Forbes net worth: $2.2 billion) is their Don Quixote. His Cohen Media Group is staking its claim in spaces renowned for their allergies to profit: He’s restoring classic films, releasing foreign-language titles, and moving into specialty exhibition.
One Oscar campaigner calls Cohen’s taste “older middle-of-the-road arthouse,” and that’s exactly the audience he wants. Three of Cohen’s French imports — “Outside the Law” (2010), “Timbuktu” (2014) and “Mustang” (2015) — received foreign-language Academy Award nominations. This year, Cohen (with partner Amazon Studios) took Iranian Cannes-prize-winner Asghar Farhadi’s “The Salesman” all the way to the Oscar, much to the chagrin of established competitors Sony Pictures Classics (“Toni Erdmann”) and Music Box (“A Man Called Ove”).
However, where other billionaire businessmen have wanted to be studio moguls, or Harvey Weinstein, what Cohen really...

Director Jose Giovanni was best known as a screenwriter for a number of important French auteurs throughout the 1960’s, having written items like Jacques Becker’s Le Trou (1960), Claude Sautet’s Classe Tous Risques (1960) and the novel upon which Melville’s Le Deuxieme Souffle (1966) was based. Many of his own directorial efforts have faded into obscurity, but his 1973 title Two Men in Town, a political drama documenting the social ills associated with the death penalty, has recently received resurrected interest thanks to Rachid Bouchareb’s 2014 remake, retooled for the American Southwest and predicated on issues of immigration. Starring Alain Delon and Jean Gabin in their last of three on-screen collaborations, it’s an interesting item, though Giovani’s overly protracted first half doesn’t sit well with the finale’s obvious sermonizing.

New on DVD & BluRay this week are three films which awards season completists will need to see...
Mr Holmes in which 76 year-old spry Sir Ian McKellen is aged up to play the world's most famous detective at 93 years of age as he mind begins to deteriorate. Mr Holmes was a leggy arthouse hit this summer but can that be converted into an awards run for Sir Ian? We shall see... Tangerine, one of the year's best films, follows Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) & Alexandra (Mya Taylor), best friends & hookers, as they search for Sin-Dee's boyfriend/pimp (James Ransone) who cheated on her "with real fish!" during her latest prison stint. It's the most unexpected and awesome Christmas comedy ever. It's already snagged multiple Gotham nominations but pray for Golden Globe, Bfca, Spirit nominations and top ten lists because this Sean Baker gem deserves them. Trainwreck, or The Coronation of Amy Schumer as 2015's It Girl.

★★☆☆☆A loose remake of the 1973 José Giovanni film of the same name, Rachid Bouchareb's Two Men in Town (2014) transplants the original's critique of the French judicial system to New Mexico. Starring Forest Whitaker as a Muslim ex-con struggling to carve out an honest life, Bouchareb's latest livens with the occasional moment of clarity but lacks the strength of conviction necessary to articulate its loaded message. After a brief exposition depicting the murder committed by Whitaker's soon-to-be-released convict William Garnett, Bouchareb takes us on a helicopter ride to observes the expansive Mexican border.

There are two new thrillers out this weekend in limited release that are well worth your time, and I reviewed them here. Two more indie thrillers hit both theaters and VOD yesterday, but they’re enough of a mixed bag for me to suggest you wait for their inevitable DVD or Netflix release instead. Both are produced and acted well enough, but they share a single trait that keeps them from the recommended list. For everything they do, it’s the things they don’t do that ultimately underwhelms. Cor van Hout (Jim Sturgess) is a man between jobs. It’s the early ’80s, and the economy in Amsterdam is in the canal leaving him far more motivated towards illicit employment. His friends are in the same boat — Jan (Ryan Kwanten) is good with his hands, Frans (Mark van Eeuwen) is a wild man and Willem (Sam Worthington) is an aggressive go-getter with an existing grudge against...

The Town That Dreaded Showdown: Bouchareb Returns to New Mexican Landscape with Mixed Results
French director Rachid Bouchareb’s long celebrated filmography has garnered two of his titles Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film (Dust of Life; Days of Glory), along with a host of other accolades for a body of work that often revolves around either Algerian experiences in France (modern and period), or explorations of race and/or gender within unique narratives. A long-time producer of Bruno Dumont’s work, Bouchareb has been pursuing a variety of international productions. His latest, Two Men in Town, is a morality exercise that happens to take place in roughly the same Us locale as his last effort, 2012’s Just Like a Woman. Despite a notable cast and several rather arresting performances, the end result never elevates beyond a standard dramatic exercise that ends in more or less the same...

In Rachid Bouchareb’s Two Men in Town, a remake of José Giovanni’s 1973 film, William Garnett (Forest Whitaker) is on parole after serving eighteen years for murdering a deputy of Sheriff Agati (Harvey Keitel). Agati is not at all pleased that Garnett is back in his perpetually windy New Mexico municipality, though despite what the title suggests, Two Men in Town is less about the dynamic between the two men than the reformed and newly religious Garnett’s relationship with Agent Smith (Brenda Blethyn), his parole officer. Blethyn is wonderful as an all-too-rare character, a middle-aged woman who holds her own in a position of authority over violent men. Similarly, Ellen Burstyn has a cameo as Whitaker’s mother, and the pictu...

It’s been 20 years since Forest Whitaker and Harvey Keitel shared a movie — Wayne Wang’s Smoke – and if I remember correctly, they don’t share the screen in it. Now they’re finally truly united in the remake Two Men in Town, in which they appear together in many scenes — but it’s not a friendly union, at all. Whitaker plays a man who returns to town after getting out of prison, a role filled by Alain Delon in the 1973 original. In the French film, though, the ex-con is a safecracker, while this time he’s a cop killer. Keitel’s part is the local sheriff (an inspector, played by Michel Bouquet, the last time), who can’t just forget that the guy shot down his deputy, no matter how reformed he seems to be. As seen in the trailer for the new version, it’s all about those two characters, the...

Forest Whitaker seems to be drifting back into the spotlight. Last year, he led the hit "Lee Daniels' The Butler" and appeared in support in "Out Of The Furnace," and now he has a bonafide arthouse world film with the Berlin International Film Festival-approved “Two Men In Town.” Helmed by “Outside The Law” director Rachid Bouchareb, the film’s French trailer has arrived online ahead of its release in that country and you won’t need to know French to watch it. Despite being an English-language film and being set in New Mexico, the Whitaker-starring film—which includes Harvey Keitel, Ellen Burstyn, Brenda Blethyn and Luis Guzman— will be released by Cohen Media Group later this year. The Bouchareb-helmed film, based on Jose Giovanni’s 1973 film of the same name, falls neatly into the ex-con-trying-to-go-straight subgenre albeit with some stellar cinematography which you can glimpse in the newly released trailer.

“Two Men In Town” Dir. Rachid Bouchareb, starring Forest Whitaker, Brenda Blethyn, Harvey Keitel and Luis Guzman A remake of a 1973 French film starring Alain Delon and Jean Gabin, “Two Men In Town” is a sadly missed opportunity. It's a beautifully shot film (kudos to Dp Yves Cape, who also served on “Holy Motors” and “White Material”), but one that, aside from some unusual casting decisions, brings nothing new to the ex-con-trying-to-go-straight genre. In fact it falls into its overfamiliar rhythm so quickly that you have to keep reminding yourself you haven’t seen it before. And it really is a shame, because Blethyn’s pragmatic, “Fargo”-esque parole officer is a pleasure, Whitaker’s character’s racial profile (black man with a white adoptive mother and a Latina girlfriend) is oddly but laudably rarely even mentioned, and the dusty, sun-blanched New Mexico landscape is well evoked by Cape’s...

French-Algerian director Rachid Bouchareb has lately alternated between sweeping historical dramas (the WWII drama "Days of Glory," the Algerian War portrait "Outside the Law") and sentimental two-handers with quieter approaches ("London River," "Just Like a Woman"). In all cases, however, Bouchareb tends to deal in similar themes of contrasting political and personal relationships. "Two Men In Town," a loose remake of José Giovanni's 1973 tale of a paroled murderer trying to get his life back together, applies this tendency to the least-ideological of Bouchareb's movies, resulting in a thinly executed tale littered with uneven performances. Nevertheless, a committed turn by Forest Whitaker in the lead role, paired with "Holy Motors" and "My Life in Pink" cinematographer Yves Cape's evocative images of the spare western landscape, lead to an intriguing contrast between the half-baked material and a handful of stronger ingredients. It's a movie at war with its deficiencies. "Two Men.

Forest Whitaker and Algerian filmmaker Rachid Bouchareb are teaming for "Bill's Law", a $20 million remake of Jose Giovanni's 1973 French psychological drama "Two Men In Town" says Shadow and Act.
The original followed a recently released safe cracker attempting to lead an honest life. He's soon pushed to the breaking point by both his ex-gang trying to lure him back, and a vengeful cop stalking him.
The remake changes the locale to contemporary small town Arizona and will deal with American anti-Arab paranoia. Shooting kicks off in the Fall.
The film is the first of a trilogy of English-language films exploring the complex relationship between the West and the Arab world.
