Visual poetry at its best
paveltsvetkov22 September 2001
"Kozijat Rog" is by far the best Bulgarian film ever made.

It has all the characteristics of greatness: a story that lacks nothing of the dramatic depths of classical tragedy; a frugal style of visual narrative that is both monumental and subtle; acting that is as good as real-life; and last but not least - music that is impossible to forget.

"Kozijat Rog" is conducted in the ways of old - with the power and gentleness of a true master. And although color loses its saturation with the passing of time, this film will not, for it is shot in black-and-white.

Superb revenge drama from Bulgaria
Andy-2969 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Bulgaria under Ottoman rule. A group of four Turks attack a woman shepherd, brutally raping and killing her. Her widow vows revenge, and brings up the surviving daughter, Maria, like a man, teaching her the use of weapons and personal defense, and preparing for the day the killers will pay for their deed. Nine years later, Maria has become a beautiful, if quite savage and unpolished, woman. She and their brutish father go after the killers of her mother one by one, leaving a goat's horn behind their bodies. But before the duo can kill all the murderers, she falls in love with a handsome shepherd living near their house. The father can not accept this relationship, and the consequences will be terrible for all. Shot in black and white, and with very little dialogue, this revenge drama is a brutal, primeval masterpiece that ought to better known. While there is surely a nationalist undertone (Bulgarians should fight against the oppression of the Turks is a prominent message), this is a great film of its own.

A must-see for any discerning film lover
imdbusrr6 October 2005
Even if you can't see a sub-titled version, you won't miss anything; as someone has already mentioned, the dialog in this film is extremely minimal. Instead, the viewer is immersed in the story through the natural sounds of the wild Bulgarian hills, empathic and creative (but never obtrusively 'there') camera-work and the amazingly expressive and authentic performances of the two lead actors.

When this film was released it was seen by three million people in Bulgaria, and the population then was only 8 1/2 million.

It is sad to relate that the director, Metodi Andonov, lived only a few years after the making of this film. With so few examples existing of his craft, The Goat Horn is even more precious.

An absolutely beautiful, unforgettable film.

A hymn to simplicity
folkloro14 June 1999
I could never imagine some months ago, that a Bulgarian movie I saw a night that I didn't have something more interesting to do,would make me admire it so much,so that I could definitely say that it is a masterpiece of the European cinema ever made. No special effects,no impressive decoration.Just a plain composition but also a genius one. The wife of a farmer is being raped and murdered by a gang,in front of the eyes of her little daughter. The farmer hungry for revenge brings the girl up as a boy, and when she is old enough they kill one by one the killers. This movie is a hymn to simplicity. No dialogs when it is not necessary, full of primitive feelings with perfect harmony between actors and natural location.Excellent!!!!!!!!

A hauntingly beautiful and timeless tale.
KristinVS10 March 2006
No point for me to go into the plot with all the other comments. This is an exceptional film that delivers on many levels. There is a minimum of dialog and the story is told through realistic action and expression. The acting is so good you can feel what the characters are thinking with hardly a word spoken. The cinematography is at times stunning and always very appropriate for the story. There are moments of visual poetic beauty coupled with a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. It's a story of power and oppression, of anger and revenge. The stage is set during the time of Turkish rule over Bulgaria. It has the depth of a Shakespearean drama, yet the film is a testament to simplicity.

To those who have seen the film there is so much that can be said, but for newcomers it's best to let the film tell the story. The layers of meaning are forcefully and gently revealed.

I rate this as one of the great film masterpieces. It is a shame that it has not received a wider international audience. It is unheard of in many parts of the West, but it has all the hallmarks of a classic. I hope that someday this film will be available at DVD sales and rental shops in Western Europe, the Americas and Asia. It deserves to be there. It deserves to be viewed in film schools, universities and art schools around the world. This film has been available in Bulgaria in a DVD limited edition.

Excellent movie, a Bulgarian equivalent to Italian neo-realism
louisferro7 November 2002
This is an excellent movie, the Bulgarian equivalent to an Italian neo-realism masterpiece. The degree of freedom to artistic expression is extra-ordinary, especially if replaced into the context of the political environment prevailing in Bulgaria in the 70s. The practical absence of dialogue and music, (except for a very beautiful vocal), and the Black and White image emphasize the dramatic content of the movie. The direction is remarkable, and the play is first-class. Definitely, the best Bulgarian movie, and a must-see for every cinephile.

The authors denounce violence against human nature and defend the right to personal freedom
major25 September 2004
One of outstanding Bulgarian films, One of the best screen versions of a short stories by Nikolai Haitov. This film is at once a parable and tragedy revealing by mean of lean dialogue and great dramatic tension the cruel history of Karaivan and his daughter Maria. The filmmakers - screenwriter Nikolai Haitov, director Metodi Andonov, cinematographer Dimo Kolarov, production designer Konstantin Dzhidrov, theme song written and performed by Mariya Neykova and at last, but not at least - the main actors Anton Gorcheb and Katya Paskaleva - denounce violence against human nature and defend the right to personal freedom. Katya Paskaleva played brilliantly two main female characters - this one of the mother and second one of Maria. After this film she became a great Bulgarian movie star.

A harsh and unforgettable tale of retribution
RogerTheMovieManiac8811 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
'Kozijat rog' is a brutal and gripping revenge drama from Bulgaria. Based upon Nikolay Haitov's short story 'The Goat Horn', the film is set in the 17th or 18th Century when Bulgaria was part of the Ottoman Empire. The opening credits warn that the movie starts with an eruption of violence and so it does. A shepherd's wife is raped and murdered by a gang of four intruders in front of their little daughter, Maria. Raising her as a boy and training her to kill in cold blood, the shepherd plots to avenge his wife's horrific death.

As his daughter blossoms into womanhood, thoughts of violence gradually leave her being as she yearns that her scarred heart may experience the gentleness and compassion of love. Maria's awakening and romance with a young shepherd displays a gentleness that is at odds with her father's destructive quest for revenge.

Director Metodi Andonov sets the scene in a disrupted landscape of spartan pastoral simplicity that at first seems somewhat off-putting in its sheer rawness. The fact that he and his team managed to weave a narrative from this simplicity that builds and builds to such an involving level of lyrical potency says wonders for them as film-makers.

The second half of 'Kozijat rog' contains some of the most riveting tragedic cinema I have ever seen. The performances of Katya Paskaleva and Anton Gorchev are mesmerising in their slow-burning level of intensity. This one is a haunting masterpiece that drew me in more and more with every passing minute and, ultimately, left me astounded as to its simple yet heart-breaking power. It is a movie that, I think, compares very favourably with Bergman's memorable 'Jungfrukallen' from 1960, and that is high praise indeed. This is a draining and moving gem to watch and a film whose primeval imagery sticks in one's mind.

Good start but end of film a bit letdown for me
Angel_Peter27 June 2019
I was very much taken in by the movie in the start. Not to the point where i would say masterpiece but a solid and interesting approach to things. Unfortunately a film of this character only have a few viable endings and for me I think it was fast limited further down. I did think the acting was good and I do think the landscapes was beautiful. But I felt the story lacked some development outside the very narrow scope of the father and the girl. And I did also think there was lack of character progression besides one of the main characters. It is by no means a bad movie. I just felt if could easily have achieved so much more than ending up being a very average movie.

excellent film
turnerfreeman-231 January 2022
As an undergrad film student, this was my absolutely favorite discovery. Powerful film with minimal dialog yet every aspect of the story, the drama and the horror of war, comes through loud and clear. Highly recommended if you can get a chance to view it. I've been trying to add this to my personal collection and professional collection with no luck for the past forty years.

Movie about the strength of a Woman and a land under slavery
hshishkova-5132816 January 2021
Be whatever oppression comes upon, there is always a strong spirit to rise. And in todays times, when more than ever it is important to cherish and value the true power of women, the main Lady character - one to bear the strength and banner of rising against all violence and subjugation, defying that only a man can liberate or bring justice is a vital sign of what women can do. Beyond that, we can learn to renounce the slavery against humans and see the true vandalism against humans it brought. A movie, that beautifully and with few words brings up great human rights to a pedestal. As a cinematography, this is shot very much in the spirit of the classic cinema, enchaining the viewers experience in creating a visual a musical harmony and art masterpiece. A story remains in our minds and brains not with the words, but with the emotions, and this movie draws on free spirit and justice as true human emotional pillars.

Because we deserve revenge, but also love!
martiiv21 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Everything starts with a violent act on a family. A little girl is forced to watch 4 pigs raping and murdering it's mother. From then on the girl is raised as a boy from her caring father with the thought of protecting her, but also plotting a revenge. Years go on, Maria is now a young woman, the revenge is in full force. Meanwhile Maria meets a man and falls in love with him, her gentle and womanly nature could not be stopped by her father. Multiple times she fails to kill one of the rapists because she watches in amusement a love between two young souls. After multiple disputes with her father she finally goes and kills the last rapiat in cold blood just so she knows this revenge story is finally over and she could finally give everything to the man she loves. Unfortunately her father wouldn't understand and after she sees Maria with the man, he kills him in his sleep after she goes home. On the next day she goes to the man's house and sees him killed. She sees the goat horn and understands it was her father. She burns the house and walks in it to die together with her beloved one. The father sees it but it's too late, he manages to get her out but she's already dead.

I am torn on this one. It's obviously tragic and obviously a masterpiece. I would put it right next to Citizen Kane in a list of the greatest movies ever, I think it's that good. But should I forgive Kara Ivan? In his way of protecting, he killed his daughter. So many tropes in this one. Slavery, revenge, inequality. I choose to remember this one for the undying, beautiful and gentle woman nature that can endure the toughest of times and put on the greatest of fights. Mesmerising movie! Undoubtedly one of the best, not just Bulgarian, but in the whole world. Watch it!
