Welcome to PeekTV, your daily look at the best that television has to offer. In each installment, we make three picks for the best shows to watch and…toss in a little extra.
Thursday, May 18 What Happened Last Night?!
(What does this have to do with the history of transportation and warfare? Check out last night’s TV picks.)
“Scandal”
“Tick Tock”/”Transfer of Power,” ABC, 10:00 p.m.
Synopsis: As the clock ticks down to the inauguration of the first female President of the United States, Olivia takes a big risk to ensure Mellie’s safety; In the final days of his presidency, Fitz uses his power to make some unexpected changes.
Why You Should Watch: It’s been a big few weeks for “Scandal,” even outside of what’s been airing. “Dear White People” gave it a spinoff of sorts with “Defamation,” which took on a life of its own.

Hot off the success of John Wick: Chapter 2, Keanu Reeves is in talks to join a new film project that doesn't involve blowing people away with guns. Instead, he will be comedically dealing with the death of a child. Yeah, I know it doesn't sound like it should be funny, but he becomes very annoyed with a bird in the process as he builds a garden for his wife. Isla Fisher (Now You See Me) is in negotiations to play his wife in the film.
Apparently, the script for this film is supposed to be incredible. It was written by Matt Harris, and it was once on the Black List of best unproduced scripts. The theme of the story is how love can carry you through grief. This is the synopsis:
A married couple lose a child and the wife goes into a recovery place to help her with overwhelming grief,...

The concept behind Table 19 is compelling enough — what happens over the course of a wedding reception at the guest table that’s made up of social pariahs and “didn’t think they’d actually say ‘yes’” attendees? Table 19 takes us into a world of outsiders, and if the outcasts aren’t the most interesting people at a wedding, then I don’t know who is. Yes, I’m being serious.
Ex-maid of honor Eloise (Anna Kendrick) is Table 19’s lead, both in the film and at the table. Having previously dated the bride’s brother, Teddy (Wyatt Russell), she’s intimately acquainted with the seating arrangements of the wedding and lets the rest of the table know almost immediately that they are the “randoms” of the night — or, as the bride’s mother so aptly puts it, “the table that should have known to send ‘regrets’ but...

Isla Fisher and John Wick: Chapter 2‘s Keanu Reeves are on the verge of joining The Starling, a new dramedy from Finnish director Dome Karukoski.
Deadline has the scoop, revealing that both stars are nearing deals to play a married couple, one who soon find their lives plunged into despair following the sudden loss of a child. Matt Harris is the brains behind the hot-tipped script, which once found itself on Hollywood’s Black List of unproduced screenplays. More often than not, once a screenplay is plucked from the Black List, it isn’t long before the property is whipped into shape, and with Fisher and Reeves now circling, don’t be too surprised if The Starling is fast-tracked into production before the year’s end – you know, providing all of the necessary schedules align.
Here’s the synopsis, per Deadline:

Oh wow. After the general indifference the previous episode of The Big Bang Theory inspired, it turns out things can always get worse. That’s relative of course, because The Romance Recalibration isn’t an offensively bad episode of the show, but it is a sloppy, forgettable one, and I wanted more from the promising concept.
We start off in a dream sequence in which Leonard surprises Penny with dinner, wine and affection after a hard day’s work. In reality, he’s sitting in his pants playing video games, and she complains to Amy and Bernadette on girl's...

The more advanced our technology gets, the more stories we’ve gotten about artificial intelligence. However, sci-fi narratives about artificial intelligence have started to grow more complex and interesting as the real-life technology advances and influences our ideas. Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Amour Fou (Jessica Hausner)
An ecstatically original work of film-history-philosophy with a digital-cinema palette of acutely crafted compositions. Amour Fou seamlessly blends together the paintings of Vermeer, the acting of Bresson, and the psychological undercurrents of a Dostoevsky novel. It is an intensely thrilling and often slyly comic work that manages to combine a passionately dispassionate love story of the highest order with a larger socio-historical examination of a new era of freedom,...

While her last feature Night Moves seemed to be sadly overlooked, Kelly Reichardt is gearing up for quite a 2016. Along with her new drama Certain Women premiering at Sundance, Oscilloscope Laboratories helped bring about a restoration of her rarely seen debut River of Grass — about which, when we talked to her last year, her response was, “I can’t look at that movie” — and will premiere it at the festival ahead of a March re-release. With Sundance kicking off in just about a month, today brings updates on both films.
First up, above one can see the first image of Michelle Williams in her new drama, which also features the cast of Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart, James Le Gros, Jared Harris, and Lily Gladstone. Clocking in at 107 minutes, Sundance also provides the official synopsis, which can be read below, followed by the new trailer and poster for the River of Grass restoration.

A Place on Earth: Silver’s Period Commune Channels Cinema-Verite
While his 2014 title Uncertain Terms still awaits theatrical release as it makes the rounds of the festival circuit after premiering last year at the Los Angeles Film Festival, the increasingly prolific Nathan Silver unveils his fifth feature. Stinking Heaven represents a change of pace stylistically and dramatically within Silver’s preferred parameters examining human beings tossed vicariously into strained living situations, where they often wear each other down to an inevitable breaking point. A period piece set within the confines of a well-meaning commune in early 90s suburban New Jersey, the grainy look and feel of Silver’s film lends it a vintage realism that aligns it with the cinema-verite styling of documentary filmmaker Allan King, whose films like Warrendale and A Married Couple focused, unobtrusively, on isolated groups or units of people in similar fashion.

Our host for tonight is Canadian dreamboat Ryan Gosling, who is best known for memes in which he says “Hey girl” and won’t eat his cereal, and also for being an accomplished actor. Gosling first made a splash as Noah Calhoun in ninth grade sleepover staple The Notebook, then went on to gain acclaim and awards buzz for roles in films such as Half Nelson, Blue Valentine, and Drive. He’s an interesting and fairly versatile actor who consistently comes across as charming (and did I mention Dreamy?), so while it’s a bit of a surprise that this is his first hosting gig, it’s a very welcome one. Cold Open: A Christmas message from Donald and Melania Trump. Dem Bones: Swanberg’s Mellow Examination of Married Life
A married couple’s weekend apart turns into the sort of mildly enterprising exploration of what happens when the cat’s away in Digging For Fire as two people fantasize about the possibilities now mostly unavailable after time delivers them into the routine of marriage and the presence of children. At times grasping a sort of quiet wisdom in its representation of identities rebelling against the sanctions of social expectations, Joe Swanberg’s film is also equal parts breezy and ominous (thanks to a central metaphor used to appealing effect) in its suggestions. A cast packed to the gills with notable indie names, comedians, and stars of more enduring celebrity, Swanberg’s managed to move well beyond the roughhewn Mumblecore technical trappings for which he’s been routinely criticized and has lodged himself firmly as a notable name in the American indie scene.

A married couple in California have been found guilty of defrauding wounded veterans of over $1m in a scam involving a film school that offered tuition and hardware they never received.
Judith Paixao and Kevin Lombard, who will be sentenced in October, created the Wounded Marine Career Foundation, a non-profit organisation that was used to embezzle federal funds, which they spent on their own holidays, a laptop and food.

As anyone who reads this site probably knows, there's something infectious about seeing one's love of film. It's a little hard to explain, but simply watching one talking affectionately about how various strips of celluloid affected them over the years is a fantastic way to get the blood flowing and your fingers itching to type in Netflix in the next browser tab. So if you haven't already, I highly recommend you check out the Criterion Collection's closet visit series. Whether it's Robert Downey Sr. reminiscing about past conversations with Jack Nicholson, Rudy Wurlitzer and Robert Downey Jr. while looking at copies of Two-Lane Blacktop and Easy Rider, Guillermo Del Toro gushing over their various Blu-Rays, Nicolas Winding Refn getting his day made with a copy of William Cameron Menzies' Things to Come or Bill Hader deep admiration of Nobuhiko Obayashi's House, each of these videos are fun little...

Crime Wave
Written and directed by John Paizs
1985, Canada
A married couple attempt to rob a house while making a door-to-door sales call: one pitches the customer, the other fakes a trip to the washroom and searches for valuables. When their cover is blown, the husband bludgeons the man to death with a glass candy dish, and sticks a broom in the woman’s wheelchair spokes before ramming Milk-Bones down her throat. What villains! And all in the name of becoming the top sales team in the nation—that is until they’re gunned down by police at the National Sales Awards ceremony: a pitch-perfect ending to their violent crime wave.
The above is one of many zany and creative ideas Steven Penny (played by writer, director, producer, John Paizs) has for a color crime film he wants to make. The only problem is that he has no middle.

While We’re Young
Written and directed by Noah Baumbach
USA, 2014
Noah Baumbach’s last few films have been about protagonists doing nothing, or at least trying to give the illusion of doing something. Ben Stiller’s Greenberg said as much, even while slowly building a doghouse for his brother. Greta Gerwig’s Frances Halloway was a professional dancer who didn’t dance to the point that it made her “undateable”. Baumbach’s latest film While We’re Young is about yet another form of stagnation: middle age. A married couple of forty-somethings encounter a married couple of twenty-somethings, and that illusion that they’re doing everything they’re meant to be doing at this age quickly fades away.
This sort of generational crisis fits Baumbach’s mentality like a glove, or perhaps a stylish, hipster fedora. Though While We’re Young feels like more of a studio project in comparison to Frances Ha,...

Opening Night: The fun kicks off on the 25th at 7:30 p.m. with the exciting new flick from the always amazing Astron-6 collective, The Editor, an homage to the brutal Giallo movies of the ’70s and ’80s directed by Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy. Closing Night: Goodnight Mommy the debut feature film by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, will screen at 8:30 p.m. on the 29th and is a nightmarish vision of familial dread when twin brothers believe their cosmetically altered mother is literally not the woman she used to be.

Vacancy (2007)
Directed By: Nimród Antal
Written By: Mark L. Smith
Starring: Kate Beckinsale (Amy Fox), Luke Wilson (David Fox), Frank Whaley (Mason), Ethan Embry (Mechanic), Scott G. Anderson (Killer), Mark Casella (Truck Driver), David Doty (Highway Patrol)
“Vacancy” is a commendable effort to restore thrills and tension in modern horror, which is something lost in films of this genre now. It takes on a modern take of “Psycho” with a lone motel scenario with fewer characters. It manages to merge themes from the exploitation sub genre to fit with a modern audience. “Vacancy” is a refreshing horror film that avoids heavy gore as the selling point.
A married couple, whose relationship is on the fritz, car breaks down near a small isolated motel in hopes to stay overnight until they get their car fixed the next day. Unfortunately, what was seemingly a harmless visit...

Plot: A married couple on the run meet up with a charming young con man and involve him in their dilemma in 1962 Greece. Review: Anyone who yearns for the good old days when thrillers were elegant, subtle and romantic will find themselves thoroughly pleased with The Two Faces Of January, a sumptuous and massively enjoyable suspense yarn based on a Patricia Highsmith novel. As Highsmith also wrote the source material for The Talented Mr. Ripley, this film is likely to draw comparisons to...

Plot: A married couple find themselves drifting apart after a tragic happening in their life. Both faced with different challenges, the two try and hold on to a relationship that might not be as strong as they once thought. Review: There is much to be appreciated from writer/director Ned Benson.s The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby: Them. The story of a marriage falling apart is a cold, yet occasionally moving romance. Who is right and who is wrong is not the issue here. And while this two...

A married couple live in a fantastic house in London designed by late architect James Melvin. Their relationship to each other and to the building, their work as artists and how it relates to their bodies are exposed by Joanna Hogg in Exhibition.
Liam Gillick and I continue our conversation with an examination of a crisis in representation, the influence of Julia Kristeva and Luce Irigaray, and how Valie Export and early Marina Abramovic informed Viv Albertine's portrait of the artist D. Ed Rutherford's cinematography, Liam's future in acting and the meaning of bare feet are also explored.

Plot: A married couple decides to make a sex tape in oder to spice up their lives, but disaster strikes after it is accidentally sent to several friends and family members. Review: I smiled, I grinned, I might have even snickered a few times, but I never actually heartily laughed during Sex Tape, the raunchy new comedy from Jake Kasdan starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel. It's a movie that goes well out of its way to be as smutty and dirty-minded as possible, but much like Kasdan's...

For some reason known only to some all wise (yeah right) studio execs, Ju-on: The Grudge director Takashi Shimizu’s latest horror flick 7500 has been sitting in moth balls in the States, for well over a year. Why? Who knows? It’s not as though Shimizu is an unknown name, and the it looks to be a perfectly competent fright flick, so we are somewhat baffled why it hasn’t had a Us release yet. Well one country, at least, we know it’s arrived at is Thailand. At least they’ve seen sense! Latest word on a U.S bow seems to be October time. We shall see..... Did you care for Sony’s “Bad Teacher”? Would you want to see a sequel? The movie was just okay, right? But before you forget, that R-rated comedy grossed $216 million worldwide. You might not think those are spectacular numbers, but it is higher than “Knocked-Up” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” two mid/late aughts pictures that were heralded for making the R-rated comedy bankable again. So there’s no sequel (not yet anyhow, but it is in development), but for Sony, they’re getting the next best thing. Jake Kasdan, who directed “Bad Teacher,” is back with its two stars Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel for "Sex Tape." Written by Kate Angelo, Kasdan and Segel, their latest collaboration is one that everyone will love...at least Seo-wise. Co-starring Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper and Rob Lowe, the premise is likely self-evident: A married couple wake up to discover that the sex tape...

Welcome to the 21st century, folks, where sex tapes are now shot using iPads. Yes, iPads. You know what’s even funnier than shooting your 3-hour sex tape using an iPad? The fact that the two main characters in Jake Kasdan’s “Sex Tape” are rich enough (though they don’t look that rich, which is what makes it weirder) that they can give out iPads to everyone they know on Christmas, including the mailman. (Yes, the mailman!) I mean, what do those things go for, $500 a pop? Base model? Sheesh. First world problems, amirite, kids? Anywhatever. Check out the first Red Band trailer for Kasdan’s “Sex Tape,” which reunites him with his “Bad Teacher” stars Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel. Damn, Cameron Diaz is really, uh, holding up good, huh? Time and time again, kids have been reenacting the first Thanksgiving in school plays. While it's not necessarily a true recount of the events, the version of the story is getting a bit old.
Luckily, Jimmy Kimmel presented a new story on his show Tuesday (November 27). This Thanksgiving is special, as it's also the first day of Chanukkah. It's only fitting that Kimmel has little kids reenact the very first Thanksgivingukkah.
A married couple is trying to get to Boca Raton when they come across the Native Americans, who invite them to a feast. Cornbread, potato pancakes and vegetables make up the meal, until they realize there's no turkey or menorah. What's Thanksgiving without a turkey or Chanukkah with no menorah?
That's where the menurkey comes in, combining the two into one crazy-looking bird. The kids even finish things off with a song, because why not?...

With big names like Cronenberg and Polley already announced a couple of weeks ago, it came time this morning to announced the rest of the home team for the Toronto International Film Festival. This morning, they filled in some of the gaps in the Special Presentations, Vanguard, and Real to Reel sections, and at the same time presented the full line-ups for their Canada First! and Short Cuts programmes, the former highlighting feature debuts, and the latter comprised of a whopping 43 Canadian short films running anywhere from 4 to 28 minutes long. We saw the announcements of Maddin's Keyhole and Vallée's Venice Days entry Café de Flore coming from a mile away. Invariably, almost all any given year's Canada's Top Ten list (a prestigious, juried selection of the ten best Canadian films of the year) have appeared somewhere in Tiff's Canadian categories. Also from Venice, we have the non-Canadian helmer Mary Harron...

A few weeks ago I began a four-part miniseries here, reviewing Eclipse films that deal with the topic of marriage. My first selection was Ernst Lubitsch’s One Hour With You, published almost exactly a year after I covered a different Lubitsch film, Monte Carlo here in this same column.
Now, even though I ran out of time to complete the series in June as I originally intended, the concluding installment, The Model Couple from Eclipse Series 9: The Delirious Fictions of William Klein, is unleashed one year after Mr. Freedom was the object of my attention over the Independence Day holiday weekend. I don’t know that these coincidences portend any particularly deep meaning, but they provide a lead into this review, so as far as I’m concerned, they serve a purpose.
Better yet, The Model Couple also makes a great follow-up to last week’s film, Allan King’s A Married Couple.

When I mentioned in this column a few weeks back that I planned a short series of reviews on the topic of marriage, anyone possessing more than a passing familiarity with the Eclipse Series probably could have guessed that the film I’m writing about this time around would be part of the scheme. I mean, it’s right there in the title - A Married Couple, part of Eclipse Series 24: The Actuality Dramas of Allan King. And as a follow-up to the first two installments in this four-part exploration, A Married Couple builds logically upon the themes of its predecessors. One Hour With You took a comical, light-hearted look at the temptations of infidelity, while Street Without End examined the tensions between a mismatched couple who got together for the wrong reasons, only to discover after the marriage had taken place that their ideals had misled them and...

It’s the time again, my friends. When I go through Hulu’s Criterion page and give you what’s new, what’s exciting and what might be a hint at a future release within the collection. There’s even a ton of new supplemental material from various films that are worth getting into. If you like this series of article, please sign up for your own Hulu Plus account. Every little bit counts and is much appreciated.
Let’s just get right to it then. Remember, all the links will be included with each listing. We make it as easy as possible for all of you. First up is a film that isn’t in the collection but I can easily see it being welcomed with open arms.
La Cérémonie (1995), a Claude Chabrol film, is about Catherine (Jacqueline Bisset) who hires a new maid by the name of Sophie (Sandrine Bonnaire), an illiterate woman.
