Since concluding its seven-season run on May 23, 1994, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" has held up remarkably well. It took a season or two for the series to truly find its footing, but once it did the show not only matched but expanded on the Original Series' intellectually acute exploration of humankind at its very best and absolute worst. "Tng" was especially vital in the late '80s and early '90s as we witnessed the demolition of the Berlin Wall and the fall of the Soviet Union. There wasn't a show on television at the time that wrestled with our rapidly changing post-Cold War world more thoughtfully or bravely.
One element "Tng" shared in common with Og "Star Trek" was its adherence to an unfussy visual house style that left editors plenty of options as they tore through a 26-episode season order. This was television, where, very rare exceptions, the writers and actors were king.

The same day faded-romance drama “A Love Song” screened for the Sundance Film Festival, I caught an interview with Marilyn Bergman on NPR in which the late lyricist described the time director Richard Brooks came to her and partner Alan with a request: “I want you to write me a song that is to appear twice in [“The Happy Ending”]. Early in the film, I want it to function perhaps as a proposal of marriage between these two young lovers,” he said to them. “l don’t want you to change a note or a word, but I want the song to mean something very different when you hear it a second time,” Brooks told the couple, who answered the assignment with the ballad “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?”

Marilyn Bergman, the Oscar-, Emmy- and Grammy-winning songwriter whose lyrics written with her husband, Alan Bergman, graced such hits as “The Way We Were,” “The Windmills of Your Mind,” “In the Heat of the Night” and the songs from “Yentl,” has died. She was 93 years old.
Bergman was the first woman president and chairman of the board of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), a post she held from 1994 to 2009. She and her husband and lifelong writing partner Alan Bergman wrote the words to some of the most popular film and TV songs of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, and continued to write together well into the 2000s.
They were Oscar nominated 16 times, and won three. The Bergmans were frequent collaborators with composers Michel Legrand and Marvin Hamlisch (“The Way We Were”).

The debate over Mass Effect 3‘s ending (every version of it) isn’t going to be settled anytime soon, but it certainly seems telling that more and more people over the years have started to treat the game’s “Happy Ending” mod as the RPG trilogy’s spiritual conclusion (even if it’s clearly not the canonical one).
Audemus’ Happy Ending Mod has been floating around the internet for a few years now, but the mod’s recent Mass Effect Legendary Edition update has many people buzzing about this alternate ending that, as the name suggests, aspires to offer a slightly happier and generally more complete conclusion for Shepard and the crew of the Normandy.
What makes this ending so happy, though? Well…quite a lot, actually, but here’s an overview of what this mod is all about and why so many people are rushing to download it in...

Last year’s 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (affectionately known as the Pandemmys because it took place during the Covid-19 pandemic), rewarded a total of 23 contenders with trophies. Shows like “Schitt’s Creek” and “Succession” and actors like Billy Crudup and Zendaya all claimed victory from the safety of their own homes. But of those 23 winners, shockingly only two are eligible to repeat at the 2021 Emmys: “RuPaul’s Drag Race” for Best Competition Program and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” for Best Variety Talk Series. And they’ll both probably win again.
So, what gives? Why are there so many ineligible shows this time around? It’s a mixture of some programs having ended last year and the coronavirus pandemic halting production on others. “Schitt’s Creek” accounted for all seven of the primetime comedy categories, so that means all of those are up for grabs this year. Updated with full list of winners: Netflix’s Aaron Sorkin drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 won the marquee Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) honor Saturday to cap the American Cinema Editors’ 71st annual Ace Eddie Awards.
Alan Baumgarten, Ace, edited the pic, about the unrest around the 1968 Democratic National Convention. It puts him and the film in frontrunner status in the Best Film Editing Oscar race, where it is competing against fellow Ace nominees Nomadland and Sound of Metal along with Promising Young Woman and The Father.
Baumgarten in his virtual acceptance speech thanked Sorkin for his “enthusiasm for editing — it was a pleasure to collaborate with you.” He also thanks his wife, with a nod to the pandemic: “I think myself, and as everybody understands, I brought the work home literally — thank you for your patience and understanding.”
Chicago 7 is up for six Oscars this year including Best Picture.

Douglas Turner Ward, the director, actor and playwright who co-founded the landmark, influential Off Broadway Black theater group the Negro Ensemble Company, died Saturday, Feb. 20, at his home in New York City. He was 90.
His death was announced by his wife Diana Ward.
Ward had already begun a solid New York stage acting career in the 1950s and ’60s – including Off Broadway roles in The Iceman Cometh and on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun – when, according to The New York Times, he wrote a 1966 editorial for that newspaper headlined “American Theater: For Whites Only?” The article called for the establishment of a Black repertory theater company. Turner wrote, “Not in the future…but now!”
A year later the Ford Foundation awarded a $434,000 grant to create the Negro Ensemble Company with Ward as artistic director, along with Robert Hooks and Gerald S. Krone in other leadership roles.

We've been on the edge of our seats since the 2020 Emmy nominations were announced in July. This year, the Emmys went virtual, opting to have Jimmy Kimmel host from the Staples Center in downtown LA while foregoing a traditional red carpet on Sunday night. In addition to fun cast reunions and hilarious behind-the-scenes moments, there were also some historic wins. Schitt's Creek nabbed nine Emmys out of 15 nominations for its sixth and final season, while Zendaya received her first-ever Emmy win for Euphoria, making her the youngest actress to win in the category. Ron Cephas Jones and Jasmine Cephas Jones also made history as the first father-daughter duo to win Emmys in the same year. Keep reading for the full list of winners.

The 2020 Emmys lacked some of what we normally expect from events like this, like spectacular fashion and awkward audience cutaways. But we still got a slew of great acceptance speeches from this year’s winners. Some had some funny bits to them but the most memorable came with a message of love and letting those who may be considered an “other,” that they belong with the winners of the world. With the ceremony now officially in the history books, let’s take a look at the seven best speeches we heard during this evening’s festivities.
Movie/Limited Lead Actress: Regina King, “Watchmen”
Before she even spoke, King had already made a big statement by wearing a T-shirt featuring an image of Breonna Taylor on it with the text, “Say Her Name.” Even after three previous wins (and an Oscar victory to boot), King seemed overwhelmed by the circumstances that surrounded her win.

We at Gold Derby have been covering the 2020 Primetime Emmy race since this spring, so this awards season accounts for almost the entirety of the Covid-19 pandemic that turned the entertainment industry upside down. The health crisis changed how we watched and thought about television. And it changed how the Emmys themselves did business, pushing them to a series of virtual ceremonies instead of the usual in-person extravaganza. But despite the pandemic there was more TV to nominate this year, not less. So what happened on Sunday night, September 20, when the last 23 awards were handed out? Scroll down for our minute-by-minute analysis of all the winners as they’re announced.

Let’s face it, the 2020 Emmys was a Schitt’s show. The virtual edition of TV’s Biggest Night saw an actual sweep of the comedy categories Pop TV’s now-ended Schitt’s Creek, which won seven trophies including Outstanding Comedy Series.
But it also was the HBO show. The premium cabler ran away with the most trophies for a network, scooping 11 including Outstanding Drama Series for and Outstanding Limited Series for Watchmen. Those shows took four Emmys apiece Sunday night.

Schitt’s Creek swept all seven comedy series categories during the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast on ABC tonight. But Dan Levy, who won/shared four of them, used one of his acceptance speeches, for Writing for a Comedy Series, to highlight another praised comedy series, Insecure.
Issa Rae’s HBO series is coming off one of its strongest seasons, and that was not lost on Levy.
“I want to recognize Issa Rae and the writers on Insecure for writing some of the funniest, most heartfelt television of the year,” he said.
Insecure was not nominated for writing this year but had a slew of Emmy nominations, including for comedy series and lead actress in a comedy series, Rae.
In his speech, Levy, recognized for writing the Schitt’s Creek series finale “Happy Ending”, also reflected on his journey on the show.

The multi-hyphenate creative recently discussed the ways in which he wrapped up the series “carefully and thoughtfully.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
See All in the family: Eugene and Dan Levy (‘Schitt’s’ Creek’) can make history with Emmy acting wins

He states that the goal was to tell “stories that meant something, that continually changed the characters.” Character growth has been central to the heart of the show, which sees the...

“Moira is drama!” exclaims personal makeup artist Lucky Bromhead when discussing Catherine O’Hara’s iconic character from “Schitt’s Creek.” Personal hairstylist Ana Sorys concurs that “Moira is all about the mood.” These two creatives help O’Hara transform into the wacky, self-absorbed matriarch of the Rose family. Both Bromhead and Sorys received Emmy nominations for their work on the final season of the hit series. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
They compete in different categories at the Emmys, but both artists are nominated for their efforts in the series finale, “Happy Ending.” At the wedding of David (Dan Levy) and Patrick (Noah Reid), Moira enters in an extravagant Pope themed outfit. Her eyes sparkle amid heavy eye shadow. Her hair nearly reaches the floor, and a braid of it encircles the base of her hat.

Sorys admits that the brim of “hat hair” was difficult to get right.

“It really has been the unexpected gift that really gave back to us in many ways,” Schitt’s Creek co-creator and star Daniel Levy said of the acclaimed comedy’s six-season run. “All we really wanted to do was put out a show about people who were trying to improve themselves,” the executive producer added as co-stars Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy and Annie Murphy looked on virtually during Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event.
Having had a strong showing last year, Schitt’s Creek soared this year to be one of the dominant shows in the 2020 Emmy race with 15 nominations. That’s a record number of nominations for a comedy in its final season.
It’s a result Daniel Levy attributes in no small degree to the times we live in.
