As a prominent American cultural personality Susan Sontag was invited to Sweden by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the spring of 1968. During the visit she met Göran Lindgren, head of Sandrews Film Company. Lindgren offered Sontag to write and direct two films for Sandrews.
Susan Sontag's "Duet for Cannibals" and later "Brother Carl" was intended to be the start of a pan-European art house project by the Sandrews Film Company.
Stanley Kauffman analyzed the film in his book "Figures of Light. Film Criticism and Comment", New York 1971.
