Because Rankin-Bass feature films were geared toward children, they were all shot in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio with superfluous picture information on the top and bottom of each cell so that the finished product could be matted for 1.85:1 widescreen projection in theaters while retaining a 'squared' negative ratio for perpetual television viewing.
