Passable but lethargic
dinky-422 July 2002
This tries to be one of those "two-fisted" action movies with a tough, cynical hero who smokes and drinks and who verbally spars with sultry blondes before throwing them on the bed. The fact that there's little actual violence or sex in the proceedings is disappointing but not fatal. After all, some movies get by quite nicely with little more than strong characters and sharp dialog. Unfortunately, the characters and dialog in "Ragan" are so routine as to put the movie into the "forgettable time-killer" category. It isn't really bad but there's not a single zesty moment in the entire movie... nothing at all to linger even briefly in the memory.

Ty Hardin, at the start of his career slide, manages to anchor the movie but he's given little to work with and seems content to merely speak his lines and collect his paycheck. He is, however, afforded three opportunities to show off his bare chest which, even at age 36 or so, still looks good enough to put on a menu. In one of these scenes he's shown to be wearing white briefs. Funny, one would have thought Ty to be a "boxers" kind of guy.

An average and routine Spanish/Italian co-production about a risked assignment to free an imprisoned South American leader
ma-cortes19 May 2023
A former mercenary named Lee Ragan (Ty Hardin ) , who now runs a one-plane, money-losing air-transport service, is approached by a man named Velludo (Gustavo Rojo) with a $75,000 job offer. Velludo wants Ragan to fly a plane in a mission to free Moreno, the former dictator of a Caribbean island. Ragan says "no" but then his plane is mysteriously destroyed in a fire and his insurance is suddenly cancelled , so he changes the mind and he eventually accepts the dangerous mission. After all, Moreno (Gianni Di Benedetto) is preferable to Chavez, the current dictator , and Ragan will have to chance to meet up with an ex-flame named Janine (Antonella Lualdi) who's also involved in the planned coup along with her husband (Giacomo Rossi Stuart as Jack Stuart) . Complicating things , however, is Maria (Rosella Como) , a charming blonde whom Regan meets at the airport along with her old uncle Borrell (José María Caffarel) . Then Ragan now looks forward to two love stories with those two attractive women . From heavenly skies into a hellstorm of bullets!

A slow-moving thriller with excessive talking , little action , twists and turns . This one turned out to be somewhat dull , focusing mainly on the love relationships between our protagonist and two beautiful women : Antonella Lualdi as Janine Kohler and Rosella Como as Maria . The movie results to be boring and monotonous with brief intrigues , betrayals and plot twists . However, the last twenty minutes the movie recovers its rhythm at a strong pace, so when a team of mercenaries is formed and goes up to the plane to accomplish the mission the flick raises the level . As the final attack on the headquarter where the general is locked up and in which Ragan and company incurring heavy losses but they manage to free Moreno in a daring commando raid , it is all action, from there developing some thrilling and nail biting set pieces well accompanied by a spectacular musical score from Gianni Dell'Orso and Nico Fidenco . This film was shot in Spain and Rome with special thanks by producers to the Spanish airforce for their technical help . Stars Ty Hardin who gives a passable but boring acting as a pilot-of-fortune , normally hairy-chested Hardin was forced to subject himself to a partial body waxing before appearing buffed and shirtless before the camera. Ty Hardin who can be remembered as a TV figure star in the Sixties as Bronco series (1958-1962) , from here he starred secondary roles in WWII films as PT 109 , Merrill's Marauders , Battle of Bugle . But he then emigrated to Italy to play some Spaghetti , warfares and Euro-thrillers . Unlike his fellow Clint Eastwood he didn't get successes and Ty became involved in B-films and routine Spaghettis , or thrillers like this one . Being well accompanied by some familar faces from Pasta , Peplum or Euro-spy sub-genres, resulting to be a Spanish/French co-production there're secondary actors from these countries , Spain : Gustavo Rojo , Ricardo Palacios , José Maria Caffarel , Mara Lasso and Italy : Jack Stuart , Gianni Di Benedetto and two gorgeous Eurotrash starlettes : Antonella Lualdi , Rossella Como.

This run-of the-mill and tiring motion picture was regularly directed by Jose Briz Mendez and uncredited Luciano Sacripanti . Spanish José Briz often used pseudonym Gilbert Lee Kay .Gilbert was an usual filmmaker of documentary and TV episodes , this is his first picture and subsequently filmed a ¨Spaghetti Western cult movie¨ titled ¨Comanche Blanco¨ with William Shatner that is listed among The 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies Ever Made in Golden Raspberry Award founder John Wilson's book 'The official Razzie Guide' . Rating . 5/10 . Average . Only for 60's Spanish/Italian co-productions , and Eurotrash aficionados.

GOOD ACTION MOVIE BUT AT A SLOW PACE
larryanderson10 April 2022
I first saw this movie under the title of THE DEVIL'S ANGEL on late night TV in English (Canada). This title actually make more sense than RAGAN as it is commonly called. There is a political story about mercenaries taking over a Latin country which is very weak and predictable. The REAL story involves former lovers Ty Hardin and Antonella Lualdi, who were together 5 years prior to this story. She went on to marry another man and regrets leaving Ty. ("Back then I had conditions, but today I have NONE. I just WANT YOU no matter what"). She then starts to undress but is rejected as Ty who didn't want to get involved again. "You are married, finish one relationship before you start another". The look in her eyes every time they are together on the screen would melt any man. However, the English version is missing an opening scene where Ty Hardin is seen in bed with a hooker in a seedy hotel room suggesting that Ty beds anyone he wishes. I have this opening scene, in Spanish, on my Y/T channel if you want to see it. He also jumps the blonde agent sent to capture him. After the story ends there is a nice love interaction between Ty Hardin and Antonella Lualdi where she seems LOST with no direction in life and he simply says "You ain't goin" nowhere". Her eyes light up and they drive off to start a new life TOGETHER. Some strong men say a LOT with very few words. I also have this end scene on my Y/T channel. Someone else has posted the entire movie on Y/T for you to watch.
