The movie was lost for decades. In 2015, the unedited video footage was found and it was reconstructed using an audio recording that a viewer had captured during the broadcast and later uploaded to The Internet Archive. It aired on Turner Classic Movies 50 years from the day of the original telecast.
The original Broadway stage play "The Glass Menagerie" opened at the Playhouse Theatre on Mar 31, 1945 and ran for 563 performances.
Shirley Booth was determined to make her performance as Amanda Wingfield ("The Mother") distinct from the legendary turn by the role's originator Laurette Taylor. This led to Booth clashing with director Michael Elliott who - in Booth's opinion - had the footage edited so as to showcase Barbara Loden ("Her Daughter" Laura) at Booth's expense. Booth would opine that she could have "phoned in" her performance as Amanda as it came across in the CBS Playhouse broadcast.
