The selection, chosen from 269 submitted projects hailing from 15 different countries, has achieved gender parity in terms of the directors involved, even though only 36% applications of the projects submitted were directed by women.
Ten of projects are first fiction feature projects, five are second features and 3 by more established filmmakers, including Michael Caton-Jones and Ena Sendijarević, whose latest film Sweet Dreams is the Netherlands’s Best International Feature Film entry this year.

Giulio Questi's Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot! (1967) and Death Laid an Egg (1968) are playing October and November 2019 on Mubi in the United States.Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot! In December 2014, Giulio Questi died, and the cinema lost an unflappable renegade of the arts. His name does not get dropped as often as that of his contemporaries, but those that know his films speak of them with open-eyed reverence, as much in awe of their existence as of their quality. Marked with a crazy energy, a surreal visual style, and an eccentricity in narrative that can leave a viewer baffled, his work has that experiential cult quality akin to that of Alejandro Jodorowsky: you have to see it to believe it. His career was marked with notable lapses and absences. “My movies have always been appreciated and admired by cinema insiders but they did not get a lot of money,...

Anita Ekberg in Killer Nun will be available on Blu-ray October 15th from Arrow Video
Aging blonde-bombshell Anita Ekberg gives a full-bodied performance as a sex-crazed sister with some seriously bad habits in the lurid cult classic Killer Nun.
One of the most notorious nunsploitation films, Killer Nun tells the sordid story of Sister Gertrude, a disturbed woman of the cloth who degenerates into a perverse mire of drug taking, sexual perversion, sadistic torture and murder. Joe Dallesandro, Alida Valli and the ample Paola Morra (Behind Convent Walls) offer spirited performances and able support to Ekberg, in this outrageous tale based on real events.
Boasting an incongruously classy score by legendary composer Alessandro Alessandroni (Women’s Camp 119) and stylishly rendered scenes of sex and murder, Killer Nun takes the viewer on a hair-raising journey from the heights of religious ecstasy to the depths of devilish degeneracy. Now Giulio Berruti s...

When reminiscing about ’70s exploitation cinema and its multitude of subgenres, it’s easy to skip over giallo. The gory Italian crime films, full of switchblade stabbings and gratuitous sex, are pure fun with an artful touch. With their stylized nature and refusal to shy away from violence, these movies are often thought of as the thriller equivalent of spaghetti westerns. Adapted from pulpy paperback books (the term “giallo” is a reference to the yellow color of their pages), their over-the-top titles are often just as fun as the films they describe.
Giallo may not dominate the zeitgeist these days, but somebody had to recognize their artistic significance. Lately, Quad Cinema has been stepping up to do just that. Last year, the New York theater brought six newly-restored giallo films to the big screen. The series was a success, so they’re back for more. Starting this Friday, six more giallo restorations will be screening,...

I’d stop reviewing possession flicks if they had ever stopped making them; well, I’m sure I’ll run out of good ones eventually, but today is not that day. The Possessed (1977) hit the small screen in the wake of demonic giants as a pilot for a series that never took off. What a shame - imagine if we had a Devil of the Week show terrorizing the youth of North America? But TV is littered with the also-rans, and this one is top notch hellfire.
Originally broadcast Sunday, May 1st as a segment of NBC’s The Big Event, The Possessed was up against ABC’s Sunday Night Movie and CBS’ Switch/Delvecchio. Obviously it didn’t generate enough interest to go to series, which is a damn shame because it’s teed up in very intriguing ways.
Let’s open up our faux TV Guide for some...

To celebrate the release of The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire – available on Blu-ray today from Arrow Video – we’re giving away a Blu-ray and the official soundtrack on limited edition 12″ vinyl!
One of several ‘animal-in-the-title’ cash-ins released in the wake of Dario Argento’s box-office smash The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire is a gloriously excessive giallo that boasts a rogues gallery of perverse characters; violent, fetishized murders, and one of the genre’s most nonsensical, red-herring laden plots (which sees almost every incidental character hinted at potentially being the killer).
Benefitting from a sumptuous score by Stelvio Cipriani and exuberant supporting performances from Valentina Cortese and Dagmar Lassander, The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire is a luridly over-the-top latter-day entry in the filmography of acclaimed director Riccardo Freda. An archetypal giallo from the genre’s heyday, Freda’s film...

The Iguana With The Tongue Of Fire will be available on Blu-ray April 9th From Arrow Video

Set in Dublin (a rather surprising giallo setting), Iguana opens audaciously with an acid-throwing, razor-wielding maniac brutally slaying a woman in her own home. The victim s mangled corpse is discovered in a limousine owned by Swiss Ambassador Sobiesky and a police investigation is launched, but when the murdering continues and the ambassador claims diplomatic immunity, tough ex-cop John Norton is brought in to find the killer…...

Review by Roger Carpenter
Originally entitled The Lady of the Lake—a much more accurate title then The Possessed—this is a unique genre film that is part noir, part art film, and is also considered a proto-giallo film.
Based on a hit book that was based itself on a notorious Italian murder, The Possessed tells the tale of Bernard, a lost and depressed author (played by Peter Baldwin) and a hotel maid, Tilde (Virna Lisi), whom Bernard has become obsessed with.
The film opens as Bernard makes his way to the isolated hotel where he first met Tilde, and where she still works. It is winter and the hotel is closed for the season. However, Bernard has had some success with his first novel so the proprietor welcomes him with open arms. Soon, though, Bernard discovers that Tilde has committed suicide since he was last at the hotel. Or perhaps it was murder.

On the heels of his first big break in the 1966 western Django, playing the coffin-dragging drifter of the title, and a part as Sir Lancelot in Joshua Logan's Camelot (where he met future wife Vanessa Redgrave), Franco Nero took a dip in giallo waters with spaghetti western director Luigi Bazzoni and Oscar-winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro for 1971's The Fifth Cord. Boozy writer Andrea Bild (Nero) is assigned to cover a series of murders, but winds up launching his own investigation to get to the bottom of the grisly crimes, then gets pulled deeper into the case when the killer frames him as a suspect. The only clue left at the scene of each murder is a single black glove with a missing finger. The Fifth Cord is a hybrid of sorts: Nero's character may be a reporter, but he's no average newshound. Instead, the Italian actor plays a hard-drinking...
