Sonia Nassery Cole, director of Afghanistan’s 2010 Oscar submission The Black Tulip, is lining up to direct The Last Piano In Afghanistan for Citizen Skull And Shadowplay Features.
The producers have announced the project in Cannes, where they are meeting with sales agents ahead of a late 2023 shoot in Morocco.
The Last Piano In Afghanistan is based on the life of ethnomusicologist Dr. Ahmad Sarmast, who grew up loving music and relocated from Afghanistan to Australia under Taliban rule, only to return home after the US-led invasion in the early 2000s.

Philip Tarl Denson and Lâle Teoman.
Screenwriters Philip Tarl Denson and Lâle Teoman have been named the 2019 winners of the Australian Writers’ Guild’s annual Monte Miller Awards, which recognise unproduced screenplays.
At a ceremony last night in Melbourne, Denson took home the award in the Long Form category with his sci-fi pilot Anomaly, while Teoman received the Short Form award for her web series The Black Tulip.
The two writers will now share in $35,000 in script development funding to further their scripts, with the funds invested by Scripted Ink.
The winners were selected from a pool of over 390 entries, with television and web series concepts dominating the six projects that were shortlisted.
The final judging panels praised the quality and skills of the winning writers and singled out the incredible feats of imagination displayed in crafting their stories, both of which grapple with intriguing mysteries through a sci-fi lens.

Six projects have been shortlisted for the Australian Writers’ Guild’s Monte Miller Awards, to be presented later this month in Melbourne.
The six unproduced screenplays were selected from a pool of over 390 entries across two categories, with scripts ranging from dramas and sci-fi thrillers to comedies and an online horror series. All projects are now available via the Awg’s Pathways Showcase. Television and web series project dominate those shortlisted.
Scripted Ink. will invest $35,000 of script development funding across the two successful projects as part of an ongoing commitment to supporting the development of writers and commercially viable scripts.
The final judging panel for the competition praised the quality of entries across both categories, commenting that “with the standard of entries so high, coming up with a shortlist for this year’s Monte Miller Awards was no easy task. The selected writers and their projects demonstrate a level of skill and craft,...

When’s the last time you’ve seen a movie shot in Afghanistan? If you’re drawing a blank, you’re probably not alone. In the past decade, only a handful of films based on the Taliban have been released, and only a small selection of those films were actually shot on location. To even attempt to film a movie in Afghanistan risks death, so before any critiques are delivered, Sonai Nasser Cole’s latest film, The Black Tulip deserves respect on that front....

Indiewire has weeded through the films hitting VOD this fall month to bring you a curated list of the 11 most worth your time. You'll find everything from one of the most divisive movies to play at this year's Sundance Film Festival to Matthew Lillard's winning directorial debut, from Parkey Posey's latest zany vehicle to Todd Rohal's follow-up to his decidedly oddball comedy "The Catechism Cataclysm." Here are the 11 films to watch on VOD this October, in alphabetical order: "The Black Tulip" (October 26) "The Black Tulip," Afghanistan's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards, is a modern portrait of the country that captures the current plight and resilience of its people. After the Taliban is routed from Afghanistan in early 2001, the Mansouri family seizes the new window of freedom by opening a restaurant called "The Poet's Corner," with an open microphone and an...

Opens: April 1st 2011
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright
Director: Duncan Jones
Summary: A decorated soldier discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. The experiment is a program that enables him to re-live another man's identity in the last eight minutes of his life which he must do repeatedly to find the truth.
Analysis: Two years ago British filmmaker Duncan Jones delivered his indie debut feature "Moon", a little seen but critically acclaimed sci-fi tale that was essentially Sam Rockwell acting alone or against himself. It was fresh, innovative, somber and overall heralded the arrival of a director to watch out for. After failing to secure funding for his next project, Jones quickly hopped onto the helm of this high-concept action/time travel blockbuster.
Naturally came the calls of Jones being a sell out, after all the...

Scream 4
Opens: April 15th 2011
Cast: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Mary McDonnell, Emma Roberts Director: Wes Craven
Summary: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with family and friends, but it also brings about the return of Ghostface which puts the whole town in danger.
Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.
Yet the "Scream" series itself never could quite capture that glory again. By the time the...

Prom
Opens: April 29th 2011
Cast: Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, Danielle Campbell, Yin Chang
Director: Joe Nussbaum
Summary: Portrays the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite. For Nova Prescott, it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy who gets in the way of her perfect prom. Others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events.
Analysis: Disney's attempt at creating the next "High School Musical" franchise for itself, this teen romantic comedy is a batch of clique cliches - the beauty queen, the rebel with better hair than anyone else in the film, the handsome yet dumb foreign exchange student, the 'so above it' geek who really wants to belong, and at least one or two 'fugly' girls.

My Idiot Brother
Opens: 2011
Cast: Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan
Director: Jesse Peretz
Summary: Ned is a well-meaning idealist just released from prison for dealing cannabis. In succession, he disrupts the lives and homes of his three sisters: a career-driven journalist about to get her big break; a bisexual hipster whose lies are disrupting her relationship; and a married mother who hasn't noticed that her marriage is falling apart.
Analysis: Scoring a good response over the weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, this broad light comedy with a sweet heart charmed the pants off The Weinstein Company to the tune of around $6 million for distribution rights. That covers most of its sub-$10 million budget, a number that it could potentially outgross by several factors if the good-natured tone hinted at in the reviews were correct. If anything, the few negatives tended to be because this...

Machine Gun Preacher
Opens: 2011
Cast: Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Shannon, Madeline Carroll, Kathy Baker
Director: Marc Forster
Summary: After finding God, drug-dealing biker Sam Childers renounces his outlaw ways and embarks on a spiritual path, becoming a crusader for hundreds of desperate and helpless children who were being forced to become soldiers in war-torn southern Sudan.
Analysis: Despite taking the freshly rejuvenated James Bond franchise and nearly destroying it with the very disappointing "Quantum of Solace", German-Swiss filmmaker Marc Forster still has a decent amount of good will left thanks to strong earlier efforts like "Monster's Ball," "Finding Neverland," "Stranger Than Fiction" and "The Kite Runner".
Now, in his first film since that Bond outing, Forster returns to serious drama with this true story tale of a biker who became a humanitarian crusader for children in the Sudan. The story itself is fascinating, the born again Sam Childers and...

I Am Number Four
Opens: February 18th 2011
Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Dianna Agron, Kevin Durand, Teresa Palmer
Director: D.J. Caruso
Summary: Nine infant aliens flee their home planet to hide out on Earth. The species that destroyed their planet however has followed them and sets out to hunt them down. As the infants grow into teenagers with special powers, three of them are killed. A fourth has fallen in love and now has something to stand up and fight for.
Analysis: In premise and look, this sounds like a big budget and more action-oriented reboot of late sci-fi teen drama "Roswell". Though based on a young adult novel series, it was another title in this category that was the impetus for this adaptation - Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series. Any novels with a focus on teen romance and an other worldly touch are presently being bought up right and...

The Hangover: Part Two
Opens: May 26th 2011
Cast: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifinakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong
Director: Todd Phillips
Summary: Phil, Stu, Alan and Doug travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned.
Analysis: It really wasn't until about three months before its release that Warner Brothers realised "The Hangover" was going to be a hit. Test screening response was through the roof, while the trailer had great reaction after premiering at ShoWest and online. About that time they commissioned director Todd Phillips, along with his "Old School" and "Road Trip" scribe Scot Armstrong, to pen a sequel. Yet they still waited to see how the first one went before fully committing to the follow-up.
The wait didn't last long.

The Factory
Opens: 2011
Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger
Director: Morgan O'Neill
Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.
Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".
Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King...

The Beaver
Opens: March 23rd 2011
Cast: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence
Director: Jodie Foster
Summary: A depressed toy company CEO with a failed marriage starts to wear a beaver puppet on his hand as a form of therapy, much to the initial bemusement of his family. He soon begins talking only through the character.
Analysis: This time last year, excitement was quietly brewing for "The Beaver". Gibson's drunken tirade a few years before hand wasn't forgotten, but enough time had passed that this looked to be the year of a potential comeback for the actor.
The thriller remake "Edge of Darkness" and this were his first on screen roles in ten years, 'Beaver' is also his "Maverick" co-star Foster's return to the director's chair fifteen years after her last feature. The script topped the 2008 Black List and scored rave reviews for its blend of sophisticated humor and sad pathos,...

Back for its third year (see the 2010 edition) and bigger than ever, today kicks off the first in a fifteen-part look at the various cinematic releases hitting the U.S. in 2011. Each 'part' contains brief descriptions and editorial opinion/analysis of varying length covering twenty films. Expect the remaining ones to go up between now and the first major releases in mid-January.
Like all cinematic lists set within a timeframe, there's some overlap. Some films here have already opened worldwide but have yet to hit the U.S., some upcoming films you'd expect to be here aren't because they're either still in development or have already announced 2012 release dates, some were on last year's list but got delayed so have been included again (but with all new analysis).
I confined my list to films that have either set 2011 release dates or had begun/completed production, and only films that have...

Groundbreaking, first-time nominee Kathryn Bigelow was prepping for an appearance on the "Today Show" with two of her "Hurt Locker" actors Tuesday morning when the best director noms were announced. "These situations get framed as a competition," she said. "I don't see it that way. I see it as being honored in this incredible mix of filmmakers with these incredible films, and it's a great compliment to the entire 'Hurt Locker' cast and crew. We shot this movie under very difficult conditions in the summer in the Middle East -- windstorms, sandstorms -- using a crew from Lebanon and Israel, so it was no small feat. It's pretty heady stuff, let's put it that way, to be in the same conversation with these other films." Although she's aware of the magnitude of her nomination, the fourth for a female director, Bigelow is focused more on the potential impact on aspiring filmmakers.
