Quotes

  • Tane : You have a mole here. I wonder if it's a lucky mole. I have one just like it. They say it means I'll have lots of children.

    Zatôichi : It's a lucky mole.

Tane : What would I do with so many children.

Zatôichi : Just don't raise them to be yakuza.

Tane : I won't. But why do you say that?

Zatôichi : Because to be a yakuza is a foolish way to live.

Tane : Then why don't you live a decent life?

Zatôichi : It's like being stuck in a bog. It's not easy to pull yourself out once you've fallen in.

  • Zatôichi : Forgive me if my blindness makes me a little clumsy.

  • Zatôichi : Don't take me for a fool just because I'm blind. Is Iioka full of filthy money-grubbers like you? No wonder it stinks here.

  • Sukegorô of Iioka : Ichi may be blind, but he's a skilled swordsman that his opponents shake just when he draws his sword.

    Zatôichi : Please don't exaggerate.

Sukegorô of Iioka : I've witnessed his skill. There was just a flash and a bottle was sliced in two. You couldn't even see his sword. All you heard was the sound of it returning to its sheath.

  • Sukegorô of Iioka : This is Tate. Use him as you will. He's an honest man. You can trust him.

Zatôichi : Thank you. A trustworthy man is a good man.

  • Zatôichi : Masa, you said I was just a blind man. As far as I'm concerned, whether you call me blind or crippled, I won't object because it's the truth. But, I won't allow people to look down on me just because I'm blind.

  • Zatôichi : Hanji is still young and yet he's your boss's sworn brother?

Tatekichi : His wife was the governor's mistress.

Zatôichi : The governor let him marry his mistress?

    Tatekichi : Yes, he's a lucky man.

Zatôichi : He actually married the governor's mistress?

    Tatekichi : That's right.

  • Zatôichi : I was a legitimate masseur until just three years ago. I was treated with scorn often enough back in those days. But I never let it bring me to tears, no matter how it upset me. I took up sword training so people like you who can see would treat me with respect. A blind man can achieve some status as an acupuncture master or a musician. But that wasn't what I wanted. And that won't impress people like you.

  • Zatôichi : Being good at fighting and killing people is nothing to brag about.

  • Tane : I'll follow you anywhere. Please take me with you.

Zatôichi : I appreciate you saying that, but I don't even have a place to live. And I'm blind besides.

Tane : I'll be your cane. I'll endure hardship for you as long as I live. You're the man I love.

Zatôichi : A young woman like you shouldn't be guiding a blind man. People will laugh at you.

Tane : I don't mind. Let me come with you.

  • Zatôichi : You don't have a later, so watch your step.

Tane : I'm all right. The moon just came out, so I can see fine.

Zatôichi : You must be very pretty. Suddenly I wish I could see your face. Whether the sun is shining or the moon is overhead, it's always dark for me, and I usually don't care. But at this moment I wish I could see your face.

Tane : I'm not pretty at all.

Zatôichi : You must be pretty. I can tell just by talking to you.

Tane : Feel my face with your hands.
