  • Although film is "based" on the Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, the original play, and by extension the film, was never intended to be a faithful recreation of the historical event. It was originally created as an allegory about McCarthyite witchhunts of the 1950s, much like how the play and film adaptations of "The Crucible" used the historical event of the Salem Witchhunts to be a similar parallel. Parents who desire their children to have an accurate understanding of the Scopes Monkey Trial should permit their children watch the movie only if they are willing to undertake necessary study of the Scopes Monkey Trial.
