The host of the 2023 Spirit Awards, Hasan Minhaj, suggested in his monologue that Cate Blanchett was the one to beat at this year’s awards.
But instead, Blanchett and her film Tár nearly went home empty-handed, only winning one of the seven awards for which it was nominated. The Focus film won in the best cinematography category but lost in the other categories in which it was nominated.
Tár wasn’t the only movie with multiple Spirit Awards nominations to fail to win, as Everything Everywhere All at Once’s dominance meant that the following films, all of which were up for several awards, were also shut out: Four-time nominee Palm Trees and Power Lines and three-time nominees Bones and All, starring Timothée Chalamet; The Inspection; and Murina.
Women Talking also lost all of the competitive awards for which it was nominated, three, only accepting the previously-announced prize of the Robert Altman Award,...

Just moments ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the total number of movies that are eligible to win their Best Picture prize. This time around, there are 366 films that are in contention to take the Oscar for Best Picture. That would be the largest number for the Academy in a half century, which is an interesting quirk, considering the expanded Academy Awards eligibility this year. The list is below, but it contains all of the expected flicks, as you might imagine. Now, we just have to wait a few more weeks and see which titles are nominated for Best Picture. Then, we can whittle this list down from 366 to something less than ten. Sit tight for that… Here are all 366 films eligible for this year’s Best Picture Oscar: Absent Now the Dead Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus Alberto and the Concrete Jungle All...

Mubi's retrospective Outlaw Auteur: Joseph Losey is showing March 30 - May 26, 2020 in the United Kingdom.Above: EvaThe blacklist could be a death certificate or a plane ticket. Informers and suspects alike didn’t work after the United States government went around asking who was a communist and who wasn’t. The list of people who stood up to it is small, the number of people who survived the j’accuse smaller. Director Joseph Losey left the States when he learned his name had been given to House Un-American Activities Committee, to go finish Stranger on the Prowl (1952), when the original director Bernard Vorhaus was fired. Losey came home a year later to find himself radioactive. He left again, and he never came home. Not really. He was an obviously skilled director in America but he was just hitting his stride. The crime films he directed in the States and...

Sporting one of cinema’s most varied filmographies, American born Joseph Losey is one of the few blacklisted success stories of McCarthy’s witch hunt in the 1950s, who rose to significant international acclaim after fleeing to the UK. It wasn’t exactly a smooth transition, wherein Losey directed several titles under a pseudonym for the protection of actors who were afraid to be punished for starring in a Losey production. But by the end of the 1950s, Losey began to hone a more pronounced style across a variety of genres.
Like many auteurs, Losey had a flair for tinkering with gutting the mechanics of expected formulas, and such is the case with his 1961 crime thriller The Criminal, which seems to be less interested in its narrative than the sociological implications of its protagonist in this particular milieu.…...

Gangland London, 1960: Expatriate director Joseph Losey gives the Brit crime film a boost with a brutal gangster tale starring the ultra-tough Stanley Baker — and seemingly every up & coming male actor on the casting books. A committed thief returns to his craft the moment he’s freed from prison, but the emphasis is on the nasty betrayals and squeeze-plays of the criminal underworld, that conspire to foil Baker’s plans.

The conventions of the gangster movie are rigidly defined, critic Robert Warshow observed in a famous 1948 essay. At heart is the character arc of the socially deviant protagonist, whether Rico Bandello, Tony Montana, or Michael Corleone: “a steady upward progress followed by a very precipitate fall.”
In Brian Helgeland’s excellent biopic “Legend” (2015), currently playing in limited theatrical release, the twin brothers Reggie and Ronnie Kray (Tom Hardy, in a dual role) are already on the upward curve of Warshow’s character arc in the 1960s London underworld as the film begins. “Reggie was a gangster prince of the East End,” Reggie’s future wife Frances (Emily Browning) muses in voiceover. “Ronnie was a one-man mob.” In the first scene, the dapper Reggie derisively brings tea to two rumpled detectives who are staking him out, the senior of whom, Inspector Nipper Read (Christopher Eccleston), is determined to bring him down.

Dear Danny,
Among other things, Tiff is a place for getting rid of aesthetic prejudices. I often drag my feet going to experimental projects—you know, from our conversations, that I’m far more of a narrative guy—and yet I always marvel at the beauties I find in them. Imagery and rhythm are self-sufficient pleasures, and the three-part Wavelengths program we saw showcased plenty of these elements. Following Un conte de Michel de Montaigne, João Pedro Rodrigues’ The King’s Body also uses a statue as a recurring image—not the smilingly contemplative Montaigne of Jean-Marie Straub’s splendid recitation, but the armored-for-battle Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first conquering monarch. There their similarities end, however: whereas Straub gets his mysterious effects from sun-dappled tableaux punctured by darkness, the rustling of leaves and Barbara Ulrich’s reading of the text, Rodrigues envisions a different form of performance through a parade of sinewy beefcake.

Training Day writer David Ayer returns behind the lens to direct the gritty cop drama End of Watch, shot mostly via handheld cameras, allowing the film’s realism to excel even more between the two fantastic leads, played with pride and honor by Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena. Although some of End of Watch suffers from typical Ayer gang stereotypes, a good portion of the film works as an exemplary piece of police cinema.
Brian (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike (Michael Pena) are brothers of the badge. They’re two La cops that define the true blue mentality, often letting their own cowboy heroics get them into trouble. They don’t care though, as long as the law is enforced and as long as they’re the top dogs doing it. It’s about the law and what’s fair and to them what they do every single day makes the...

Before "The Break-Up" aired, critics and Glee creatives said it was the best episode the show has ever done, and while I'm not sure that's true, it was certainly a showcase of the thing Glee does best. I'm not talking about the music or the acting or the gay PSAs. I'm talking about the way Glee balls up its fist and says, "I'm going to punch you in the feelings." And you go, "Yeah, Ok, TV show." Because you're gay, right? This ain't your first rodeo. Gay cowboy beaten to death with a crowbar? You've seen it. Beloved lesbian witch shot in the chest? You've seen it. Gay girls turning straight and finding true love, straight guys coming out and getting kicked off their shows, alien attacks, sexless "love scenes," lost limbs, deep closets, double standards, a rainstorm of bullets on a gay wedding day. You've seen it all. But...

You would have to look at people like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra or Johnny Cash to find those who have achieved the same kind of iconic, influential status of Bob Marley. The reggae legend took his unique sound from Jamaica around the world, inspiring millions with his message of togetherness, rebellion and love. And while his face has become an image almost as ubiquitous as that of Che Guevara, a whole new generation of music fans may not be familiar with his work and achievements, but the upcoming, years in the making, Kevin Macdonald directed documentary "Marley" will hopefully change that.
As the film gears up to hit theaters next month, Island Records will drop a 2xCD, 3xLP soundtrack featuring 25 songs from Bob Marley. The tunes, which will be presented as they appear in the film, run from his pre-Wailers day, through to his biggest hits, and for the first time on record,...

Iain Sinclair and Chris Petit's film installation, Flying Down to Rio, takes the viewer on a journey via a wall-to-wall simulated drive
An installation taking up four walls and 16 frames, simulating a car driving north from Dalston Junction, with cameras mounted left, right, fore and aft, Flying Down to Rio itself marks the convergence of two paths, reuniting Iain Sinclair and Chris Petit. Petit's fascination with the view from the dashboard dates back to the 1970s. "Music and speed, combined with the ratio of the windscreen, made for an experience that was often more cinematic than the films I had to review for Time Out," he has said; and his debut film Radio On (1979) contained a cherished driving sequence shot on the Westway, in tribute to Jg Ballard's Crash and Concrete Island, and soundtracked by David Bowie.
Over the decades, through London Orbital (2002), also made with Sinclair, and Content (2009), the windscreen shots have proliferated,...

Mandy Bannon Mandy Bannon is the the lead actress of the recently released horror film Last Breath which was directed by Ty Jones and also starred Aaron Laue. Mandy Bannon turned in a dynamic performance in a physically and mentally challenging role as a wife whose marriage is on its last breath. She is token hostage, along with her husband, by a madman who forces the couple into an array of deadly and gruesome situations. In Last Breath, Mandy Bannon had to be appealing. She had to be resourceful. She had to cry. She had to be sad. She had to be angry. She had to be drunk. She had to run for her life. She had to deal with hundreds on top of hundreds of rats! She had to do it all! And she did it all admirably proving that she just isn't a one note actress, but an...

The Project Runway star is sporting one of the season’s hottest neutrals. Get the look!
Heidi Klum was strutting the red carpet last night at the launch party for her activewear clothing line, sporting some very cool grey nail polish! Love! Want to try it? Read on:
Believe it or not, grey is a great neutral that works on any skin color. Tired of nudes and light pinks? Why not try a soft dove grey like Rescue Beauty Lounge Concrete Jungle? It’s just as pretty and won’t show chips too easily.
I actually happen to be wearing a similar to Heidi’s right now: Essie Nail Lacquer in Chinchilly, a gorgeous granite grey hue. I love this color because it goes with everything and makes my skin look really pink and healthy.
Those looking for more drama can always go for Rescue Beauty Lounge Nail Polish in Stormy,...

Some brief MySpace CEO history: Jason Hirschhorn and Mike Jones took over in February from Owen Van Natta, who took over from Chris DeWolfe back in April 2009. That's an awful lot of top-level changes in a year.
News Corp, MySpace's current parent company, bought MySpace for an exorbitant $580 million five years ago, back when MySpace was still king of the social networking world, but it's rapidly lost ground to Facebook in the years since. The statement from MySpace, written by Jon Miller, Chief Digital Operator of News Corp:
We fully respect Jason’s decision to leave and his personal desire to return to New York. As many people know, Jason is like family to me, and as expected, he’s done everything we asked of him and more. We’re incredibly grateful for the passion and enthusiasm he brought to the company. Pride, but no prejudice This 28-year-old’s U.S. debut could hardly be more appropriately titled. Concrete Jungle captures Nneka’s steely resolve and desire to flourish in an unforgiving world. The album is both affirmative and entertaining, addressing themes of political upheaval, reconciliation and the ignorance that so often comes with privilege. Her velvety voice is backed by smooth horns and fierce drum beats; “Mind vs. Heart,” a plea for self-awareness and compassion (“What is the mind without the heart? / What am I without my shadow?”), stands in stark contrast to the exuberant “From Africa 2 U,” which builds its chorus...

Icons of Suspense: Hammer Films, an "attractively priced (if modestly packaged) three-disc collection from Sony offers six lesser-known, black-and-white thrillers from the studio," and for the New York Times' Dave Kehr, the centerpiece is These Are the Damned, "a slippery, unsettling blend of social commentary and science-fiction from the exiled American director Joseph Losey. Filmed in 1961 but not released in England until 1963 (and then with severe cuts), it's a transitional work that stands between Losey's last un-self-conscious genre piece (The Criminal, a 1961 prison picture with Stanley Baker, retitled Concrete Jungle in America) and Eva, a strenuously ambitious drama that pointed the way to Losey's later art-house career (The Servant, The Go-Between)."...

When directors wanted their films to ooze cool, they called on Johnny Dankworth. Richard Williams on the man who made British cinema swing
There was a time when jazz and film formed a natural partnership. When a director wanted a hectic accompaniment to criminal activity, or a splintered melody to echo an on-screen psychodrama, or a cool, lush sound to accompany a cocktail-lounge seduction, jazz was the sound to use. And Johnny Dankworth was one of the men who could provide it, on time and to length.
Dankworth, who died at the weekend, was a fine musician, although not perhaps a great one. His playing and his composing did not alter the course of jazz, and he has no disciples. His real achievement, and his knighthood, came as a result of his ambition to make jazz acceptable on the concert platform and in the conservatory. He will also be remembered...

Celebrated figure of British jazz with a 60-year career as a performer, composer, bandleader and educationist
Late last November, Sir John Dankworth, who has died aged 82, elicited the most heartfelt standing ovation of his 60-year career in music for what was possibly his briefest and quietest performance. He had been taken to hospital during the run-up to the London Jazz Festival show for him and his singer wife, Cleo Laine, at the South Bank. But the frail Dankworth emerged in a wheelchair just before the interval. Laine, his daughter Jacqui, a singer-actress, his bassist son Alec and a good many of the big band looked as if they could hardly bear to watch the old star slowly bring the alto saxophone to his lips. Then the opening notes of the Duke Ellington ballad Tonight I Shall Sleep filled the hall, vibrating gently with Dankworth's delicate, richly clarinet-like ballad sound and everybody breathed out.

"New York," begins the rousing Alicia Keys chorus of Jay-z's catchy hit, Empire State of Mind. "Concrete jungle where dreams are made of/ There's nothing you can't do/ Now you're in New York." It's a nice thought--only trouble has been that there was actually a lot you couldn't do in 2009 in New York. Like get a job, for instance. The Empire State has seen nearly 230, 000 jobs cut over about a year and a half. Happily, that trend is turning. It's turning slowly, but it's turning. There is even talk of a "moderate recovery" beginning, like, right now!
Last year private-sector employment was down 3.2%-- this year it is expected to dip only 0.6%. And get this, some experts believe New York employment will reach the same level it was before the recession began in ... 2014? Yes, that's a long time to wait but it could've been much, much worse. When Jay-z performed at the Yankees' World Series victory parade, it definitely seemed like "Empire State of Mind" was the biggest song in the country. On Thursday (November 19), it became official: Jay-z has his first #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100.
Hov had reached #1 before via cameos on Rihanna's "Umbrella," Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love" and Mariah Carey's "Heartbreaker," but none of the songs from his albums had ever made it. Earlier this year, "Run This Town" came close to the #1 spot, reaching as high as #2.
"Empire State of Mind" — which features Alicia Keys — became the blockbuster that broke through with very high-profile performances on the MTV Video Music Awards, game two of the Yankees/Phillies World Series and the aforementioned Bronx Bomber parade.

Contrary to popular belief, movie adaptations of popular video games haven’t been that terrible. “Double Dragon” wasn’t that great, but the rest? Yes, “Super Mario Bros.” was weird as hell, but look at the source material! Dennis Hopper ruling over a dystopian city by turning people into mushrooms isn’t a that much stranger than an 8-bit Italian plumber growing a raccoon tail and using it to fly. The “Street Fighter” movie –- the first one at least -– is one of cinema’s greatest works of camp. Fifty years from now, people will throw Uwe Boll festivals. He is our new Ed Wood. “Doom” had guns and those guns were used on monsters. “Hitman” let us see Olga Kurlyenko naked. See? It hasn’t been all that bad!
No, the problem is when movies treat video games as their subject, not their inspiration. For thirty years straight,...
